The juvenile height growth of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied in 1095 spruce provenances included in the IUFRO inventory provenance test of 1964/68. Trees growing on the experimental site established in Krynica in the Beskid Sądecki Mts. (Carpathians) were measured at ca. 3-year intervals in the period 1969-1988, from the age of 6 years (i.e. 2 years of planting) to 25 years. The variability of tree height in this spruce population was assessed on the basis of the means expressed in units of standard deviation, calculated for each provenance and each geographical region of Krutzsch in successive years of measurement. Using the standardised units made it possible to characterise the dynamics of spruce growth in provenances from 95 geographical regions representing the whole European range of the species. The effects of geographical region, tree age and their interaction on the variability of height growth within this range were estimated using multi-way analysis of variance with replicated measurements. The regions showing similar spruce growth trends were grouped by using hierarchical cluster analysis. The results on the juvenile dynamics of height growth showed that spruce provenances from various geographical regions of Krutzsch differ significantly in their genetic reactivity. Based on this, several groups of regions were identified: (1) regions with average or weak but stable spruce growth characterised by no significant effects of age or genotype × age interaction in the whole measuring period, or regions with height growth improving with age; (2) regions of spruce provenances constituting a selection elite, with very good height growth in the whole measuring period or in its later part, characterised by no G × A interaction; (3) regions with varied genetic reactivity of height growth dynamics in the juvenile period, and regions of Scandinavian populations with poorest height growth in the whole measuring period. The studies proved that spruce provenances from the regions of Štiavnické Pohorie, Low Tatras (Slovakia), Masurian Lakeland, Augustów Lakeland, Podlasie, Silesian Beskid Mts., Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (Poland), Jutland (Denmark), Bihor Mts., Transylvania, and Eastern Carpathians (Romania) have a high selection value.

The use of iterated deferred correction has proved to be a very efficient approach to the numerical solution of general first order systems of nonlinear two-point boundary value problems. In particular the two high order codes TWPBVP.f, based on mono-implicit Runge-Kutta (MIRK) formulae, and TWPBVPL.f based on Lobatto Runge-Kutta formulae as well as the continuation codes ACDC.f and COLMOD.f are now widely used. In this survey we describe some of the problems involved in the derivation of efficient deferred correction schemes. In particular we consider the construction of high order methods which preserve the stability of the underlying formulae, the choice of the mesh choosing algorithm which is based both on local accuracy and conditioning, and the computation of continuous solutions.

In this paper, we study ϕ-Laplacian problems for differential inclusions with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove the existence of solutions under both convexity and nonconvexity conditions on the multi-valued right-hand side. The nonlinearity satisfies either a Nagumo-type growth condition or an integrably boundedness one. The proofs rely on the Bonhnenblust-Karlin fixed point theorem and the Bressan-Colombo selection theorem respectively. Two applications to a problem from control theory are provided.

Opis:
All tree breeders cope with the same challenge of the very long time interval of a single breeding cycle. What is more, trees are long−lived, with desirable breeding traits expressing late during their life cycle. Increasing problems with climate change, globalization or economic growth have forced us to accelerate tree breeding and improve selection precision, both of which can be achieved by genomic selection (GS). The idea of GS was introduced nearly 20 years ago as an extension of marker−assisted selection (MAS) in order to advance breeding technologies using genetic markers. Unlike MAS, which exploits only a set of marker−trait associations, GS relies on a high number of genetic markers that are spread throughout the entire length of the genome. All markers effects are assessed simultaneously in order to build a precise model that allows prediction of genetic estimated breeding value of a particular individual using genetic data only. GS has already revolutionized dairy cattle breeding resulting in remarkable improvements across multiple traits and is becoming more and more common in crop production. We now know that genetic architecture of quantitative traits is complex, but recent advances in genomics have made it possible to deal with this problem in an unprecedented way. There are certain concerns regarding GS in forest tree species that include genotype−environment (G×E) interaction and the usefulness of the predictive model built up by GS in the next generation of trees. Nevertheless, experimental results obtained so far have shown that the genetic gain per unit time as well as selection precision can be substantially increased. Here we present the basic principles of GS for forest tree species, giving examples of studies carried out so far and discussing problems and future possibilities that GS may soon open up for forest tree breeders.

Wraz z rozwojem rynku sprzedaży detalicznej można zaobserwować stały wzrost popularności produktów oznaczonych markami pośredników handlowych. Towary te nie są już promowane jako produkty generyczne o najniższej cenie, ale jako alternatywa wobec dóbr markowych o porównywalnej jakości i wartości dodanej dla nabywcy. Produkty oferowane pod marką detalisty odgrywają zatem najważniejszą rolę w pozycjonowaniu tej marki na rynku oraz budowaniu lojalności konsumentów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie warunków współpracy detalistów z producentami towarów oferowanych pod marką tychże detalistów ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem procedury wyboru potencjalnych dostawców. Autorka dodatkowo dokonuje próby oceny zależności między doborem kryteriów selekcji partnerów a wynikami współpracy. Badanie opiera się na pogłębionym przeglądzie literaturowym i studium dwóch przypadków współpracy polskich producentów z globalnymi sieciami handlowymi.
The popularity of own brand products popularity is growing steadily along with the development of a retail market. These products are no longer promoted as low-priced generic products, but as an alternative to the branded goods characterized by comparable quality and added value. Therefore, the product itself plays a central role in positioning an own brand and building the customer loyalty. The aim of the article is to explore the determinants of cooperation between the retailers and producers of private brand products with special regard to the process of potential partner selection. Author attempts to assess the dependence between the selection criteria choice and the cooperation results. The research is based on literature review and case study of two Polish producers successfully cooperating with global retail chains.
