Opis:
The Paleozoic Platform comprises the southwestern half of the Polish territory, separated from the Precambrian East European Platform (EEP) by a NW–SE trending subvertical lithospheric-scale discontinuity – the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone. In the present study, the Paleozoic Platform basement is subdivided based on geological and geophysical evidence acquired during the last decades, including deep seismic refraction and reflection results, as well as gravity, magnetic and magnetotelluric data. The units adjacent to the EEP, the Mid-Polish Domain (comprising the Łysogóry Block) and the Pomeranian Block, are characterized by a thinned three-layer EEP-type crystalline crust (age 1.7–3.7 Gy). Their oldest platform cover is probably composed of thick Ediacaran syn-rift sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Their western extension in the contiguous German and Baltic area can be traced as far as the East Elbian Massif and Thor Suture based mainly on magnetic anomaly patterns. The Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks located in SE Poland are characterized by Cadomian (660–600 My) basement overlain by the thick deformed Ediacaran foredeep deposits. Whereas the units with the EEP-type basement are interpreted as proximal terranes displaced along the EEP margin during the late Early Paleozoic, the blocks with a Cadomian basement are conceived as exotic terranes of a possible Gondwanan provenance. All these terranes were accreted ultimately during the final, latest Silurian stages of the Caledonian deformation although the exact scenario of the amalgamation remains hypothetical. The Sudetic Domain in SW Poland is a collage of different crustal units juxtaposed ultimately in the Pennsylvanian (ca. 310 Ma) during the final episodes of the Variscan Orogeny. Their northern boundary corresponds to the Rheic Suture traceable in magnetic and gravity anomalies pattern along the northern margin of the Wolsztyn–Leszno High, and continuing westwards along the Mid-German Crystalline High. The arcuate trace of the suture in the NE is dextrally displaced along the Odra Fault, and continues southwards where it is mapped as the Moravian–Silesian Suture.

We expected that our paper on the crevasse-splay microdelta (Chomiak et al., 2019) would arouse the interest of other researchers for at least two reasons. First, this is the first such palaeoform discovered and described within the Mid-Miocene lignite seam in Poland. Second, the microdelta siliciclastic deposits are strongly deformed both ductile and brittle. Therefore, we would like to thank Tom van Loon for his effort to comment on our article, including his words of appreciation, and above all, for pointing out some of the terminological and interpretative shortcomings. Our reply will be in line with the issues discussed in his comment.

This paper presents the application of seismic amplitudes analysis to characterization of the petrophysical properties of Main Dolomite in terms of hydrocarbons exploration. Seismic modellings were used as a support tool at the presented interpretation. Various variants of seismogeological models were constructed on the basis of well log analyses. Theoretical wavefield computed for the obtained models were a basis for further assessment of the causes of anomalous amplitude effects coming from the top of Main Dolomite. Moreover, this approach was useful for proposing the construction of amplitude filters used to reduce an undersirable tuning effect, which occurs in thin beds formations. The obtained results were helpful in the analysis of registered data from 3D seismic survey in Cychry-Namyślin area (Geofizyka Toruń Ltd. 1998)

The greatest natural gas fields belonging to Romgaz company are characterized by an advanced stage of exploitation, which actually involves a special approach, from the perspective of the works performed in the wells. As part of the most recently Romgaz strategy, for these fields have been created new geological models based on 3D seismic acquisitions, which allowed identifying some new less drained or even undrained zones. This aspect created the premises for developing the opportunities for capitalization of the new reserves volumes, by applying the advanced technologies of opening productive layers by perforation and reperforation operations with deep penetration guns, using also underbalance conditions. We mention also that new cased hole geophysical methods like PNN and RCI consisted also important elements in establishing the perforation intervals and identifying the by-passed layers. The paper contains some relevant case studies, which illustrates the efficiency of these new methods.

Opis:
The authors interpret the structure of the Central Carpathian-North European plates suture zone in Poland, where three main Carpathian tectonic units: the Central Carpathian, Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) and Outer Carpathian are present. In general, the PKB follows this zone. Several deep bore-holes were drilled in this region and the seismic lines were tied to bore-hole data and geological maps. The Polish PKB belongs to the complex geological structure stretching from Vienna in Austria to Romania. The rocks included in the PKB tectonic components were deposited within the paleogeographic realm known as the Alpine Tethys, mainly during the Jurassic-Early Cretaceous times. Both strike-slip and thrust components occur within the Polish section of the PKB. The strongly tectonized, few kilometer wide PKB zone is limited by a flower structure marked by two major faults, linked to the strike-slip zone. These faults reach the North European Platform (part of the North European Plate). The flysch sequences, arranged into a series of north-vergent thrust-sheets, constitute the main component of the PKB in the survey zone. They contain olistoliths, which are mainly Jurassic-Early Cretaceous in age. The PKB tectonic components of different age, strike-slip, thrust as well as toe-thrusts and olistostromes are mixed together, giving the present-day mélange character of this belt, where individual units are hard to distinguish. Two olistostrome belts (mélange units) exist within the PKB structure. The seismic lines show the Central Carpathian Paleogene rocks covering the Paleozoic Central Carpathian Basement south of the PKB. The Subtatric covers the High-Tatric autochthonic and allochthone rocks. The Central Carpathian Plate is thrust over the North European Platform in the Podhale region. The allochthonous Outer Carpathians consist of several nappes (thrust-sheets) verging northward. They are thrust over each other and over the North European Platform which dips gently southward.

Opis:
The Pogórska Wola palaeovalley of combined tectonic and erosional origin dissects the Mesozoic floor of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin to a depth exceeding 1200 m. It formed during Paleogene times presumably due to fluvial and submarine erosion, concentrated along a local pre-Late Badenian graben system. All members of the foredeep’s Badenian-Sarmatian sedimentary fill attain distinctly greater values inside the palaeovalley than on top of elevated plateaux on palaeovalley shoulders. The fill comprises the Early to Late Badenian sub-evaporite Skawina Formation, the laterally equivalent Late Badenian evaporite Krzyżanowice and Wieliczka formations and the supra-evaporite Late Badenian to Early Sarmatian Machów Formation. Over the plateaux and in the highest palaeovalley segment, the evaporites are developed in the sulphate facies Krzyżanowice Formation, whereas in the lower palaeovalley segments chloride-sulphate facies evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation occur. The rock salt-bearing rocks are involved in thrusting and folding at the Carpathian orogenic front, which helps to assess the lateral extent of the Wieliczka Formation in seismic records. The deep palaeotopographic position of the evaporites inside the palaeovalley, combined with their lithological and sedimentary features, point to their formation via subaqueous gravity flow-driven redeposition of originally shallow-water evaporites, preferentially halite-bearing, presumably combined with precipitation from sulphate and chloride brines at the palaeovalley floor. Both the redeposited sediments and the brines must have come from the adjacent plateaux and from a thrust-sheet top basin, approaching from the south on top of the Cretaceous-Paleogene Carpathian flysch thrust wedge.

Opis:
The development of basal Zechstein (Wuchiapingian) strata inSW Polandindicates the existence of a diversified relief inherited after the flooding of the pre-existing depression by the transgressing Zechstein sea. The deeper parts of the basin were the place of development of thin basinal Zechstein Limestone showing sedimentary condensation manifested by bored and encrusted grains and thick evaporites (mostly halite), and in shallow parts Zechstein Limestone reefs followed by thinner evaporite sequences (dominated by anhydrite) occur. The analysis of 3D seismic sections showed that instead of three conventionally recognized evaporite units of stratigraphic potential in the PZ1 cycle, five units occur (from the base to the top: Lower Anhydrite, Lower Oldest Halite, Middle Anhydrite, Upper Oldest Halite, Upper Anhydrite). In a particular place their number may vary from two (Lower Anhydrite at the base of the PZ1 cycle and Upper Anhydrite at the top of the PZ1 cycle) to five. There are two complexes of Lower Anhydrite occurring throughout the platform and basinal zones showing deepening-upward (transgressive) trend. The halite sedimentation in the deepest parts of salt basins began shortly after the deposition of the upper Lower Anhydrite complex while in the sulphate platform areas the sulphate deposition lasted still for a long time. The Lower Oldest Halite deposits occur in the depressions. Between the halite basins, anhydrite platforms occur, and the thickness of anhydrite platform deposits is smaller than it is observed in salt basins. The Upper Oldest Halite in turn is recorded above the anhydrite platform. The two halite units represent different phases of development of halite basins. The Lower Oldest Halite basins are related to the pre-Zechstein depressions, although in some cases their syndepositional subsidence was controlled by reactivation, during the deposition of basal Zechstein strata, of former faults. In turn, the Upper Oldest Halite basins used the accommodation space created due to anhydritization of the Lower Anhydrite deposits composed originally of selenitic gypsum. The 3D seismics evidences that the PZ1 evaporites inSW Polandhave been deposited in far more complex and dynamic system than it was assumed before.

Opis:
Geological models play a crucial role in the description and simulation of fluid flow of both hydrocarbon- and water-bearing strata. Methodology, based on the hydraulic flow unit build on the basis of core plug data combined with rock types determined from logs and 3D seismic cubes generated on the basis of 2D seismic sections is presented. It works as a possible exploration tool for the Miocene gas accumulations in the Carpathian Foredeep of Poland. Deterministic and stochastic, geostatistical methods were used to construct a static reservoir model from 2D seismic sections, lithological data and hydraulic flow unit data. A pseudo-3D seismic volume was generated from all of the 2D seismic data available, in order to aid the modelling of hydraulic flow units. This approach is applicable to other reservoirs, where the availability of seismic data is limited. This study demonstrates that even without 3D seismic data and with limited well log data, the proposed hydraulic flow unit approach can be successfully applied to reservoir modelling through the integration of diverse data sets for a wide range of scales.

Seismic interpretations are normally made to help identify and locate structural and stratigraphic traps for oil. We focus on problems in interpreting seismic sections in sandy-shaly Miocene deposits which occur in the eastern part of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep. There, the structural picture yielded by the seismic section is not in good agreement with the known structure and a correct interpretation of the seismic wave field, based on seismic modelling, is needed to ensure proper location of exploratory and production wells. We show that the correct choice of petrophysical parameters in these deposits allows interpretation of the seismic image in terms of a multi-horizon gas body. A decrease in velocity, characteristic of gas-saturated beds, was not observed in velocity obtained from sonic measurements. Therefore, several versions of a seismogeological model were constructed based on the results of integrated log interpretation. A model using seismic wave velocity obtained from acoustic wave velocity and a quality factor Q, as a measure of attenuation of elastic waves, was of particular significance. In addition to the petrophysical parameters, the strata geometry necessary to construct a seismogeological model, was determined. Combining the interpreted geometry and information regarding depths of lithostratigraphic units an anticlinal structure was deduced in the gas-rich zone. A comparison of synthetic seismograms calculated using only sonic velocity and seismic velocity corrected for attenuation, with the recorded seismic traces, shows that the best agreement was obtained for a model which included the attenuation. Differences observed between the synthetic and field sections were a basis for determining local direct hydrocarbon indicators, which were then used to identify hydrocarbon deposits in the recorded seismic section.

"Rudna" copper mine

Opis:
A block development operation at the "Rudna" copper mine (KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.) encountered a "compressed gas trap" that caused the ejection of fragmented rock material into a drift. Faced with a new threat of gas ejection the mine needed to find methods to identify potential gas concentration zones prior to any further exploration work. Surface seismic surveying was chosen as a widely-accepted standard method of investigating rockmass structure and tectonics and pinpointing natural gas deposits. An area of one square kilometre was selected directly above the ejection site, a 3D seismic survey, known as Duża Wólka 3D, was performed and a survey well S-421A was drilled. The objective was to investigate the overall rock structure, especially the structure of Zechstein and top Rotliegendes formations, as well as to attempt identifying anomalous zones, which could be linked with the gas saturation of Ca1 dolomites, on the 3D seismic image at the P1 level (Zechstein/ Rotliegendes boundary). An interpretation of multi-scenario seismic modelling of the recorded data helped to: – recognize the structure and tectonics of the area, including minor faults cutting through the top-level Rotliegendes formations and floor-level Zechstein formations. Such faults could constitute migration channels for Carboniferous-period gases, – locate zones with nearly zero-reflection amplitude at the surface of the top-level Rotliegendes (P1 seismic boundary), which would suggest a reduction of elastic parameters of the Ca1 dolomite. This reduction could be linked to an increased porosity and fracturing of the dolomite and its saturation with gas (a reduction of the seismic wavelet propagation velocity). Credibility of this interpretation is already partly corroborated by data from wells drilled in the Zechstein limestone by the mine. The paper presents the first in the world attempt to use the surface seismic survey for location of zones with small gas concentration in porous rocks at the Zechstein/Rotliegendes boundary. Such zones should not be identified with gas pools that occur in the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) in the area of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline.

Permo-Mesozoic Mid-Polish Trough formed eastern segment of the Southern Permian Basin, within which thick series of the Upper Permian (Zechstein) evaporites, including rock salt, have been deposited. During subsidence phase the presence of thick salt series led to regional decoupling between sub-salt basement and supra salt Mesozoic sedimentary cover, and to development of various salt structures. Evolution of salt pillows and diapirs was genetically related to activity of the basement fault zones. The Goleniów, Dzwonowo-Człopa, Damasławek, Mogilno, Kłodawa and Lubień salt diapirs have been analyzed using conventional seismic reflection data acquired during petroleum exploration, and - in case of Damasławek and Lubień diapirs - shallow high-resolution seismic data. Interpretation of available seismic data gave new insight into geometry of these salt structures, finally shaped during Late Cretaceous-Palaeogene inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough and partly modified during younger (Neogene- Quaternary) phases of their tectonic activity.
