In the presented paper the results of the analysis of the influence of seismogeological model parameters as well as inversion parameters on the effectiveness of attenuation variations imaging by means of amplitude tomography based on the variations of centroidal frequency of signal spectrum in the seismic well to well measurements have been described. In the considerations the homogeneous models with the zones of higher and lower values of velocity and attenuation as well as gradient media were taken into consideration. In the analysis of the effectiveness the centroidal frequencies of the signals observed in the receiver points and traveltimes generated for assumed models were used. The main attention was paid to the effect of starting velocity field on the results of tomographic inversion.

Forward seismic modelling can aid seismic studies of the pre-Zechstein strata in areas of developed salt tectonics, such as the Obrzycko–Szamotuły region, NW Polish Basin. The results not only can be used for seismic interpretation, but also can support the planning of survey methodology and the workflow of seismic data processing. This paper presents the results of modelling that was carried out, before the acquisition of the regional-scale, seismic line Obrzycko-1–Zabartowo-1–Zabartowo-2 (Górecki, 2010). An interpreted, seismic transect was used to build a basic, seismic-geological model. The modelling was based on seismic ray theory. The zero-offset mo- delling (theoretical wave field) for different geometries of salt structures showed that an increase in salt thickness resulted in a pull-up of reflection events, related to the sub-salt horizons. The incorporation of faults and salt overhangs into a model significantly complicated the seismic wave field. The results of offset modelling, pre- sented in this paper as seismic ray tracing and common-shot gathers, proved that (1) the seismic response of the Rotliegend (Permian) formations can be recorded, despite the presence of the overlying salt pillows and diapirs, if offsets several kilometres long are used, and (2) the complex configuration of seismic reflectors (diapirs with salt overhangs, faults) gives rise to complicated, seismic ray paths that may cause difficulties in common-depth-point stacking and therefore decrease the quality of the seismic records.

"Rudna" copper mine

Opis:
A block development operation at the "Rudna" copper mine (KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.) encountered a "compressed gas trap" that caused the ejection of fragmented rock material into a drift. Faced with a new threat of gas ejection the mine needed to find methods to identify potential gas concentration zones prior to any further exploration work. Surface seismic surveying was chosen as a widely-accepted standard method of investigating rockmass structure and tectonics and pinpointing natural gas deposits. An area of one square kilometre was selected directly above the ejection site, a 3D seismic survey, known as Duża Wólka 3D, was performed and a survey well S-421A was drilled. The objective was to investigate the overall rock structure, especially the structure of Zechstein and top Rotliegendes formations, as well as to attempt identifying anomalous zones, which could be linked with the gas saturation of Ca1 dolomites, on the 3D seismic image at the P1 level (Zechstein/ Rotliegendes boundary). An interpretation of multi-scenario seismic modelling of the recorded data helped to: – recognize the structure and tectonics of the area, including minor faults cutting through the top-level Rotliegendes formations and floor-level Zechstein formations. Such faults could constitute migration channels for Carboniferous-period gases, – locate zones with nearly zero-reflection amplitude at the surface of the top-level Rotliegendes (P1 seismic boundary), which would suggest a reduction of elastic parameters of the Ca1 dolomite. This reduction could be linked to an increased porosity and fracturing of the dolomite and its saturation with gas (a reduction of the seismic wavelet propagation velocity). Credibility of this interpretation is already partly corroborated by data from wells drilled in the Zechstein limestone by the mine. The paper presents the first in the world attempt to use the surface seismic survey for location of zones with small gas concentration in porous rocks at the Zechstein/Rotliegendes boundary. Such zones should not be identified with gas pools that occur in the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) in the area of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline.

Opis:
No numerical model has thus far addressed seismites, even though seismites are frequently used for the conditions which have to be fulfilled for the development of seismites have also been estimated only empirically. The present contribution is a first attempt to model numerically the soft-sediment deformation structures caused by the passage of S-waves through near-surface sedimentary layers. The simulations are based on the so-reconstruction of seismic events in the geological past. This is the more remarkable since the boundary called pressure tube model and the iSALE2D program. We modelled a seismic S-wave with six different vertical velocities, ranging from 1.6 to 2.6 m · s-1, passing through sediments with different densities and porosities in a sedimentary succession from the surface down to a depth of 10 m. The modelled soft-sediment deformation structures (load casts, flame structures, injection structures and sedimentary volcanoes) show similar geometries and sizes as those known from laboratory experiments and field studies. The geometry, size and type of these structures depend on the sediment properties and on the initial pressure used as a trigger mechanism, rather than on S-wave velocity. In contrast, the depth of the seismites appears to depend strongly on the S-wave velocity.

Opis:
The Potwar sub-basin is an important hydrocarbon producing zone of the Upper Indus basin and has significant oil and gas potential. The Balkassar area is the main oil field of the Potwar sub-basin and oil is mainly produced from Eocene carbonates. The Chorgali Formation is of Eocene age and is the main reservoir rock in this area. Structurally, the Potwar sub-basin is complicated, and surface features often do not reflect subsurface structures. This is due to the presence of detachments at different levels. In such cases, it is necessary to integrate seismic data with geological information for an accurate delineation of subsurface structures. Eleven seismic profiles were interpreted to understand subsurface structural style. To correlate well data with seismic data, a synthetic seismogram has been generated. Time, velocity and depth contour maps have been prepared. A 3D model for the Chorgali Formation has been prepared which confirms that this is a four-way anticlinal structure bounded by faults. It makes this structure more favorable for hydrocarbon accumulation. Moreover, a cross section has been prepared for five wells to show that the Chorgali Formation is spreading. Based on it, to show the relationship between compressional tectonics and basement slope, a 3D structural model has been prepared. In this case study, the Balkassar anticline was interpreted as a four-way closure pop-up structure which provides a structural trap for the accumulation of hydrocarbons. This study will help us understand the accumulation of hydrocarbons in the same type of structural traps in the Potwar sub-basin and in similar kinds of basins. It is also relevant to oil exploration within Pakistan.

W artykule przedstawiono metodykę modelowań, porównanie teoretycznych pól falowych z zarejestrowanymi oraz opracowane głębokościowe modele rozkładu prędkości fal P i S wzdłuż wybranego profilu. Badania wykonano dla danych z zapadliska przedkarpackiego obejmujących wielohoryzontowe złoże gazu zlokalizowane w utworach mioceńskich.
Knowledge of P and S-wave velocity distribution results in more detailed characterization of reservoir parameters within the study area. Seismogeological models, developed on the basis of previously interpreted horizons and well data, can be confirmed by seismic modelling on the basis of comparison theoretical with recorded seismic sections. Additional availability of PS sections, beside PP sections, sanctions S wave velocity model construction, which is an important element of reservoir interpretation. This article presents methodology of seismic modelling, comparison of theoretical with recorded seismic sections and finally developed depth P and S wave welocity models for the chosen profile. The research was carried out for the Carpathian Foredeep data covering multihorizon gas reservoir localized within the Miocene formation.

The complex structure of the Carpathians, causes that seismic pattern is very difficult. The reliable reconstruction of the structural system of the platform basement formations require application of 2D seismic modelling. The paper presents the application of seismic modelling for interpretation of the 56-1-89K profile, recorded in the Stryszawa structure area, in the western part of the Outer Carpathians. Seismogeological models were developed using borehole data (Lachowice 7 and Ślemień 1) and the preliminary interpreted 56-1-89K profile. Theoretical time sections were computed with the softwares: Outrider and Omega. Geological interpretation performed using results of seismic modeling enabled the reconstruction of JSsp, Flsp, PALstr=Msp, Cm+D1str and Pr horizons and reliable identification of faults limiting the Stryszawa structure.

The height of reservoir water is one of the important factors affecting the seismic behaviour of earth dams. A large number of earth dams have been constructed in different countries that are sometimes located in a high-risk geographical zone. The studies on the seismic behaviour of earth dams have been conducted for several decades. However, this study, considering the importance of the subject, it investigates the seismic behaviour of Sumbar rock-fill embankment dam under near- and far-field earthquakes with variation in the water level behind the dam. The ratio of water height of the dam to dam height is considered as an important indicator to investigate the seismic performance of these structures. The analyses were performed using the ABAQUS finite element platform, under 7 near-field and 7 far-field earthquake records. In this research, the changes in dam stresses, displacements, and failure of the dam have been discussed. The results indicated that the effect of near-field earthquakes on the seismic behaviour of earth dams is more significant than far-field earthquakes.

Opis:
Despite the increasing technological level of the reflection seismic method, the imaging of fold and thrust belts remains a demanding task, and usually leaves some questions regarding the dips, the shape of the subthrust structures or the most correct approach to velocity model building. There is no straightforward method that can provide structural representation of the near-surface geological boundaries and their velocities. The interpretation of refracted waves frequently remains the only available technique that may be used for this purpose, although one must be aware of its limitations which appear in the complex geological settings. In the presented study, the analysis of velocity values obtained in the shallow part of Carpathian orogenic wedge by means of various geophysical methods was carried out. It revealed the lack of consistency between the results of 3D refraction tomography and both the sonic log and uphole velocities. For that reason, instead of the industry-standard utilization of tomography, a novel, geologically-consistent method of velocity model building is proposed. In the near-surface part, the uphole velocities are assigned to the formations, documented by the surface geologic map. Interpreted time-domain horizons, supplemented by main thrusts, are used to make the velocity field fully-compatible with the litho-stratigraphic units of the Carpathians. The author demonstrates a retrospective overview of seismic data imaging in the area of the Polish Carpathian orogenic wedge and discusses the most recent global innovations in seismic methodology which are the key to successful hydrocarbon exploration in fold and thrust regions.

Opis:
Concepts prevailing among the Polish geoscientists during the last decades assumed that the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone is a major tectonic discontinuity separating the pre-Ediacaran East European Craton (EEC) crust from the Paleozoic Platform composed of terranes accreted during the Caledonian and Variscan orogenic processes. The recent interpretations of the TTZ by Mazur and collaborators, basedon gravity modelling and new PolandSPAN seismic reflection data, revive earlier ideas of the EEC crust extending to the western Poland and NE Germany. These authors propose that the TTZ is in fact a Sveconorwegian (ca. 1 Ga old) collisional suture marked by a crustal keel expressed as the Pomeranian and Kuiavian gravity lows in northern and central Poland. However, the present review of seismic data available, as well as a closer evaluation of the modelling results, do not confirm the keel/suture concept. On the other hand, the idea of the TTZ as an Early Paleozoic tectonic discontinuity is supported by several lines of evidence, including a strong regional magnetic gradient and a contrast in the crustal structure. The latter is revealed by seismic velocity distribution from the refraction data, in the results of magnetotelluric profiling and in recent seismicity patterns. The interpretation of the PolandSPAN data attempting to prove the continuity of the cratonic crust and its Ediacaran-Lower Paleozoic cover across the TTZ appears questionable. At the same time the POLCRUST-01 deep seismic profile in SE Poland documents that the zone is associated with the subvertical Tomaszów Fault. The basement top displacement by ca. 0,5 km and associated change in its slope are related to the fault whose deep crustal roots are further documented by reflectivity patterns in the lower crust. The recent modelling exercise by Krzywiec and collaborators aimed at questioning the thick-skinned nature of this fault does not present compelling results, being based on a poorly constrained geological model. The general conclusion from the present review is that the recently published data either support or at least do not contradict the concept of the TTZ as a tectonic zone separating the continuous EEC crust from several allochtonous blocks - mostly proximal Early Paleozoic terranes to the south-west. Thelithospheric memory of the TTZ echoed in successive stages of its reactivation in different intra-plate tectonic regimes - transpressive Variscan, mostly extensional or transtensional Permian through Early Cretaceous, compressional Late Cretaceous and finally Neogene, related to the Carpathian orogenic compression.

Opis:
The Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ), a transcontinental feature evident from magnetic and gravity maps, runs obliquely across the territory of Poland from the NW to SE and for a century it has been considered a deep tectonic boundary between the Pre- cambrian East European Platform (EEP) in the NE and the so-called young Palaeozoic Platform in the SW. The results of quantitative interpretation of gravity and magnetic data, integrated with data from new reflection seismic profiles crossing the TTZ, indicate the continuation of the Precambrian basement of the EEP and its lower Palaeozoic cover toward the SW underneath the Palaeozoic Platform of southwestern Poland. They also suggest the occurrence of a crustal keel beneath the TTZ. In the broader context ofEuropean geology, these results imply the location of a hypothetical Caledonian tectonic suture, marking the site of the collision between Avalonia and Baltica, not along the TTZ, but farther SW, in northern Germany and southwest Poland. Another implication is that the extensive Permian-Mesozoic sedimentary basins of western Poland are established above the attenuated margin of the Baltica palaeocontinent.
