Opis:
This study analyses and presents a technical comparison of seepage estimation from 11 empirical equations with measured seepage losses by the inflow-outflow method from two lined and unlined secondary irrigation canals sub-divided into different reach lengths. A significant margin of error was observed between empirical and inflowoutflow methods, hence modifications in empirical equations were performed. Results reveal that the average seepage losses observed in unlined and lined canals by inflow-outflow method were 9.15 and 3.89%, respectively. Moreover, only the Chinese equation estimated seepage losses for an unlined canal as similar to observed losses (0.11 m3 ∙s-1) whereas the Indian equation estimated similar results for a lined canal to those observed in the field (0.09 m3∙s-1). However, the rest of empirical equations were modified in accordance with error percentage with regard to the observed losses. The empirical equations were then observed to estimate reliable results of seepage.

Opis:
Flood embankments have played an important role in flood protection systems for centuries. Tightness evaluation of water structures should result in determining whether floods may cause seepage incidents, consequently leading to their damage or even destruction. It is assumed that the time of water passage from the river to the protected area under steady-state conditions can be a good indicator of the embankment resistance to long-term water rise. The curve of water passage times shows the values obtained at different ordinates of the dammed water and can be regarded as a characteristic parameter of flood embankment tightness. Determination of the water passage time (Tp) additionally requires finding the trajectory along which this time is the shortest possible. However, there is no need to analyse the unsteady filtration, which requires the determination of an initial condition and the course of time-dependent boundary conditions. Engineers in practice, often use the time Tpp which elapses from the beginning of flooding to the occurrence of seepage in the protected area. The relationship between the passage time (Tp) and the seepage onset time (Tpp) was analysed on a model example. Practical use of the curve of passage times is showed on the example of the reconstruction of the left-bank Warta embankment in the area of Konin.

A problem of the Boussinesq type for flow of incompressible fluid through a medium with the porosity being a given function of time is studied. At first, from the continuity equation the Dupuit relation for the fluid velocity in the considered medium is found. Next the Boussinesq equation is derived for the medium. This equation, if written for quantity H = h/ and not for the hydraulic head h, has a form of the classical Boussinesq equation, with the coefficient not constant but dependent on time, however. An example of the solution of the modified Boussinesq equation is also given.

Opis:
Seepage gradients play an important role in the detachment of soil particles from the side walls of stream channels and drainage ditches. Most seepage studies have focused on water losses. Relatively few have addressed the determination of these gradients as causes of soil loss and incipient gully development. This paper presents the methodology of calculating these gradients on any point of the soil-water interface of a subsurface flow system, for which a close-form analytical solution was obtained (Römkens 2009). Such a solution was derived using conformal transformations for a situation in which a ponded surface drains by subsurface flow into a ditch with a water table lower than that of the ponded surface. The derived relationships allow a close estimate of the soil detachment forces on the wetted drainage perimeter of the stream system.

Opis:
In the pressure form of Richards' seepage equation, the differential wa-ter capacity function is used and calculation of its values is necessary to solve the equation. The course of function variability was determined basing on the soil moisture characteristic. To obtain simpler solutions, the water capacity was expressed as a function of moisture. Using van Genuchten and logistic functions, its course for six soils available in the relevant literature was determined. Two sandy soils were used to dis-cuss the water capacity hysteresis and simple formulae were proposed, enabling the coefficient for scanning runs to be determined.

Opis:
This paper presents a different, than commonly used, form of equations describing the filtration of a viscous compressible fluid through a porous medium in isothermal conditions. This mathematical model is compared with the liquid flow equations used in the theory of consolidation. It is shown that the current commonly used filtration model representation significantly differs from the filtration process representation in Biot’s and Terzaghi’s soil consolidation models, which has a bearing on the use of the methods of determining the filtration coefficient on the basis of oedometer test results. The present analysis of the filtration theory equations should help interpret effective parameters of the non-steady filtration model. Moreover, equations for the flow of a gas through a porous medium and an interpretation of the filtration model effective parameters in this case are presented.

Opis:
One of the main modes of monitoring the geotechnical conditions of earth dams is piezometric measurement, which measures water levels in an open piezometer or water pressure in a closed piezometer. During piezometric measurements, various types of factors can cause disturbances in these measurements that take the form of systematic, accidental, or obvious mistakes. Before measurements from open or closed piezometers are analyzed, outliers due to coarse errors should be detected and rejected. Such observations may significantly influence the result of the analysis and cause erroneous assessment and interpretation of the phenomenon studied. To do this, statistical tests must be applied so that the doubtful measurement can be accepted or rejected at the assumed significance level. This paper uses five statistical tests for identifying and rejecting outliers: the Q-Dixon test, the Grubbs test, as well as the Hampel test, the Iglewicz and Hoaglin test, and the Rosner test. The aim of this article is to try to identify the most suitable test for periodic piezometric measurements. The scope of the study includes the analysis of piezometric measurements for the Czaniec Dam for the multi-year period 2017–2020.

Opis:
This article presents the results of numerical simulations of seepage through the body of the dam and the reservoir bed. The purpose of this study was to analyse the seepage stability during a flood as well as the impact on seepage stability of the diaphragm wall and gravel columns, on which the dam body is founded in selected segments. Simulations were conducted for three different locations, and the following 3D models of the dum were prepared: – a model containing the front and right-bank part of the dam, for which no diaphragm wall, gravel columns and drainage ditch were provided for – a model of a segment of the right-bank dam including a diaphragm wall, drainage ditch and gravel columns under the dam (two variants with differing diaphragm wall lengths) – a model of the water dam segment accounting for gravel columns and a drainage ditch, but without a diaphragm wall. In the case of founding on gravel columns, the base was modelled as an anisotropic medium in terms of seepage properties, macroscopically equivalent to the actual soil medium. The numerical model utilises the finite element method. The geometry of the dam and geological substrate was defined in the GIS tools in the form of a 3D model of the terrain and geology of the substrate.

Opis:
W pomiarach wykorzystano filtrometr denny własnej konstrukcji. Przyrząd ten, będący modyfikacją infiltrometru dennego, został przystosowany do pomiaru procesów infiltracji i drenażu. W efekcie otrzymano serię danych pozwalających określić zakres pomiarowy oraz dokładność przyrządu, który może być wykorzystywany do pomiarów infiltracji i drenażu w warunkach terenowych.
The paper presents test results of laboratory measurements of seepage and drainage processes. On the laboratory position, processes of filtration through a riverbed were simulated. A bottom filtrometer, designed to measure both processes, was used for the measurements. The analysis of received data demonstrates that a seepage meter can be used to measure seepage and drainage in the field.

Stability analysis
Opis:
Evaluations of an earth-fill dam throughout its service life must ensure the stability of it against seepage and slope failure. This study presents the seepage and slope stability of the Koga earth-fill dam. The analyses were carried out using a finite element based PLAXIS 2D software, and covers the whole dam body; including 20 m of foundation depth. The behavior of both the body and the foundation of the dam were described using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Assessments of safety factor and quantity of seepage through the main body of the dam and foundation were carried out at different critical loading conditions. In this study, seepage analysis was undertaken of flow rate, pore water distribution and location of phreatic line. Additional actual field data measurements and observatory investigation were also carried out. From the simulated results, the average flow rate of seepage for the entire length of the body of the dam at normal pool level was equal to 0.06085 m3/s, whereas the figure for that through the foundation of the dam was 0.01937 m3/s. Moreover, total seepage through the main body of the dam at the current reservoir level was 0.04982 m3/s, while the actually measured quantity of seepage accumulated at the downstream toe of the dam was 0.04644 m3/s. The simulated and measured seepage discharges are 93.2 % similar. Based on the result of this study, the resulting factor of safety values during end of construction, steady state condition and rapid drawdown condition were 1.6221, 1.6136 and 1.2199, respectively. Using recommended design standards: United States army corps of engineers (USACE), British dam society (BDS) and Canadian dam association (CDA), the slope stability analysis of the Koga earth dam at all critical loading conditions are safe.
