Opis:
Mechanical site preparation (MSP) is commonly used to enable forest regeneration of clear-cuts. Less intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but such a method can result in the lack of natural regeneration. We compare the influence of three MSP methods on natural regeneration of Scots pine. The methods differ in their degree of soil disturbance. The effects of MSP by forest plough (FP), active plough (AP), and forest cutter (FC) on density, quality, and biometric parameters of one-year old seedlings were determined. The highest density of seedlings was obtained in the FP treatment (188,000 seedlings ha–1). The seedling density was significantly lower in the AP method (121,000 seedlings ha–1), and in the FC variant (36,000 seedlings ha–1). The best quality seedlings were found in the FC variant, and the worst – in the FP treatment. Most biometric parameters of seedlings did not differ by MSP method, except for the root length and root:shoot ratio. By the end of growing season, in the FP treatment, 1-year old seedlings formed a top bud more than twice as often as the seedlings from the AP and FC treatments. The FP method led to the best Scots pine natural regeneration. The results obtained in the FC variant were not as good as in the FP method, though they were still acceptable from the silvicultural point of view. The FC method was the least intensive method of site preparation, yet it is considered the most appropriate from the environmental (soil protection) point of view.

Opis:
Mechanical site preparation is recommended to create optimum conditions for seed germination and seedling growth in a clear−cut area. Lack of soil scarification or less−intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but can result in a failure to obtain natural regeneration. This study compared the effects of three mechanical site preparation methods (SPM) characterized by different levels of soil scarification (i.e. double mould−board forest plough (LPz), active plough (PA) or forest mill (FL)), as well as a control variant without mechanical site preparation, on height, density, spatial distribution and survival among naturally regenerating Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the first 2 years of growth in a clear−cut area of NE Poland. The experiment was based around a four−block randomized block design involving the four variants. Seedling height was measured at the end of the first and second growing seasons, with measurements performed on 8 meter−wide transects extending across the entire width of the cleat−cut. We found no effect of SPM on seedling height, though the density of seedlings regenerating naturally was found to be dependent. After two years, the highest density was achieved in the PA variant (8.1 seedlings/m2) and the FL variant (7.0 seedlings/m2). A significantly lower density characterized the LPz variant (5.1 seedlings/m2) and the lowest of all the variant without soil scarification (3.2 seedlings/m2). The most homogeneous natural regeneration was achieved following the use of PA (2.6% of 1 m2 plots without seedlings after two growing seasons), while the least homogeneous was the variant without soil scarification (22.4% of 1 m2 plots). Survival of pines after the second growing seasons was quite high (over 80%), and did not differ significantly depending on the SPM. Our research therefore confirmed that, in the absence of mechanical site preparation, natural regeneration of sufficient density and homogeneity cannot be obtained. The best natural regeneration was obtained on sites prepared with PA, and FL scarification being only slightly less favorable. The low density and uneven distribution of seedlings on the soil prepared with LPz was a surprising result. The probable reason for this lay in the high precipitation in the first growing season. On one hand, this provided very good moisture conditions for seed germination and seedling growth on a substrate with high porosity in the PA and FL variants, but on the other the high bulk density of mineral soil in the LPz variant led to oxygen deficit.

Opis:
This study examines the influence on growth parameters, in particular the morphological features of the root system, of 1-year-old European beech seedlings cultivated in containers with two different densities. The experiment was conducted in the container nursery in Skierdy (Forest District of Jabłonna) in spring 2011. After 10 months of cultivation in Hiko polyethylene containers, above- and below-ground parts of the seedlings were measured. The measurements of the root system were conducted with a scanner and the WinRHIZO software. No influence due to the seedling density on either shoot height or thickness was observed, but instead the research showed that different seedling densities affected the development of root systems. The mean root thickness and dry mass of the European beech seedlings were significantly higher at the lower density. The influence of seedling density on the development of root mass deserves special attention as it is the most important factor affecting future growth of the seedlings during cultivation. This tendency also suggests that the amount of nutrients allocated to shoot development may be higher in order to improve the efficiency of photosynthesis. At both densities, differences in biomass accumulation affected the root-toshoot ratio. In seedlings cultivated at the lower density, the increased dry root matter of the seedlings resulted in a significant increase in the root-to-shoot ratio. This may cause a potential growth advantage of these seedlings after they are planted and may thus result in a more productive cultivation.

Opis:
The silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in the area of Wał Trzebnicki is at the northern limit of its distribution in western Poland. This study was performed in three nature reserves with protected silver fir populations. The stands in these reserves were mixed, with complex spatial structure and abundant tree regeneration. The proportion of fir in stands was around 16% of DBHS, the age of trees reached around 130 years. The silver fir occurs mainly in the sapling stage, whereas the number of seedlings was very low. The results of this study show the influence of forest floor vegetation as well as litter type on the emergence of fir seedlings. The seedlings density was compared with the results of other studies from different geographical areas and stands type in Poland.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of an analysis of the influence of soil bulk density in a forest nursery plot on the growth and quality parameters of Scots pine and European beech seedlings. Particular density variants were obtained using a tractor device exerting controlled pressure on the soil, while field examinations were performed on an area of ‘Kłaj’ forest nursery in Niepołomice Forest District. Three series of plots were prepared for each species, applying a unit pressure of the values of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kPa, corresponding to the dry bulk density in the range of 1.03-1.19 g cm-3, and control plots without the pressure. Seeds of the examined species were sown on the prepared plots, and after 6 months of growth the seedlings were subjected to biometric analysis determining differentiation in root neck diameter, length of the above-ground part and root system, as well as dry mass of particular parts of the plant. The quality of the seedlings was also determined using the method of Schmidt-Vogt. The results obtained show that the change in dry bulk densitysoil significantly affected most of the growth parameters of theexamined seedlings. Especially high negative correlations were obtained for the length and dry mass of the root system. A significant influence of dry bulk density variant on all growth parameters of Scots pine seedlings, and on some parameters of European beech was demonstrated. An increase in soil bulk density clearly caused also a deterioration of European beech seedlings quality.

Opis:
Seedling seed orchard (SSO) growing conditions are different to those in the forest. Trees grow in wide spacing with more access to sunlight and competition between trees is less intense causing larger annual rings and limited height growth. The objective of this research was to: 1) determine the density and mechanical properties of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood grown in an SSO and 2) suggest the most suitable use of this wood. Five trees (25-year-old) were selected using the Urich II method. Final samples (from the height of dbh) were cut from pith to bark, in the four cardinal directions. From all five trees, 159 samples were used to determine: 1) the wood density, 2) the compressive strength parallel to the grain, 3) the modulus of rupture, and 4) the strength quality coefficient. For each property the following mean values were obtained: 327 kg m-3, 32 MPa, 59 MPa and 0.10, respectively. The density did not depend on the dbh or mean width of annual ring. At the same time, the mechanical properties depended strongly on the wood density. In all cases, the wood property values of the Scots pine from the SSO were lower in comparison with those published for Scots pine grown in regular stand conditions. Therefore, pine wood from SSOs should be used in the paper industry.
