Opis:
The paper presents the results of a study on mericarps and seed morphology of four taxa occurring in Poland: Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sphondylium and subsp. sibiricum, H. mantegazzianum and H. sosnowskyi. Apart from selected biometric traits we analysed pericarps and seed-coat patterns using a stereoscopic microscope (SM) and a scanning microscope (SEM). Considerable diff erences in the dorsal surface of mericarps were observed, but major structural similarities were found on the ventral surface of mericarps. Pericarp surface diff ers signifi cantly between native and alien taxa in terms of secondary sculpture. The examined seeds were characterised by reticulate primary sculpture with diff erent size and shape of testa cells. The macro- and micromorphological characteristics of the mericarp and seeds may provide valuable additional diagnostic criteria for delimitation of Heracleum and can be used in the identifi cation of fruits and seeds.

Opis:
Erysimum pieninicum (Zapał.) Pawł. (Brassicaceae) is an endemic species, growing only in Pieniny Mts. The aim of the presented work was to investigate its pollen morphology as well as its ultrastructural traits of pericarp and seed-coat. Pollen grains of this species were of small size, 3-zonocolpate with reticulate ornamentation. The external siliqua surface was of rugose sculpture, covered by numerous, stellate hairs. The internal surface of the fruit was naked and characterized by striate sculpture. The seed-coat ornamentation of E. pieninicum was of blister type.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study on seed morphology of eight following Allium species: A. pyrenaicum Costa & Vayr., A. rotundum L., A. sphaerocephalon L., A. vineale L., A. moly L., A. karataviense Regel, A. fistulosum L. and A. nutans L. The study confirmed the substantial diversity in testa characters, especially curvature and relief of anticlinal walls as well as microsculpture of outer periclinal walls. The occurrence of raised anticlinal walls – an unusually rare feature in Allium seeds, previously observed only in a few species, was found in A. karataviense. It was also found that the testa type in A. pyrenaicum did not match the typical character combination, described before for subg. Allium sect. Allium.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań nad morfologią nasion ośmiu następujących gatunków rodzaju Allium: A. pyrenaicum Costa & Vayr., A. rotundum L., A. sphaerocephalon L., A. vineale L., A. moly L., A. karataviense Regel, A. fistulosum L. i A. nutans L. Obserwacje wykonano z zastosowaniem elektronowego mikroskopu skaningowego (SEM) oraz mikroskopu stereoskopowego. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdziły znaczne zróżnicowanie cech powierzchni nasion czosnków, a w szczególności przebiegu i reliefu ścian antyklinalnych oraz mikro-urzeźbienia zewnętrznych ścian peryklinalnych komórek testy. U A. karataviense stwierdzono występowanie wypukłych ścian antyklinalnych komórek testy – cechy niezwykle rzadko spotykanej u czosnków, wcześniej zaobserwowanej zaledwie u kilku gatunków. Stwierdzono również, że typ skulptury nasion A. pyrenaicum nie odpowiada typowej kombinacji cech komórek testy, opisanej wcześniej u innych gatunków podrodzaju Allium sekcji Allium.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate seed morphology and intra- and inter-population variation of seeds of Trollius europaeus L. and Trollius altissimus Crantz., two controversial species regarding their taxonomical position. We analyzed seed-coat microsculpture and some biometrical traits (length and width, width/length ratio, volume and projected perimeter). Seed sculpture did not differ between species, but seeds of T. altissimus were usually larger than seeds of T. europaeus. Although species differed significantly in seed morphology, it was possible to show the populations of both species that were similar regarding the analyzed seed traits. We noted a significant inter-population differentiation of seeds in both species with respect to seed-coat microornamentation and biometrical traits. We conclude that T. europaeus and T. altissimus are probably not two distinct species, but T. europaeus should be divided into two lower taxa in the rank of variety or subspecies.

This paper presents the results of the study on seed morphology of five Polish species of the genus Sorbus L. (S. aria (L.) Crantz, S. aucuparia L. Emend. Hedl., S. chamaemespilus (L.) Crantz, S. intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. and S. torminalis (L.) Crantz). Observations and measurements were carried out with stereoscope and scanning microscopes. Four types of seed microsculpture were distinguished on the ground of SEM observations. The key to determine Polish species, based on morphological characters of seeds is given too.

Opis:
The genus Taraxacum is taxonomically complicated due to apomixis. Therefore, there are significant differences in knowledge of regional Taraxacum-Floras among European countries. Similarly, some taxa are well characterised with well-known distribution, whereas some ones are known e.g. from a single locality. Taraxacum scanicum of section Erythrosperma is one of the most common microspecies of this section in Europe. Recently, this taxon was split into three microspecies. In this study we map the distribution of three described taxa of this group in Poland, i.e. T. scanicum s.s., T. prunicolor and T. cristatum. The survey showed that T. scanicum has a similar distribution as T. prunicolor in Poland. This is in contrast with the hitherto known distribution of both taxa. T. cristatum was found at a single locality that is quite distant from the distribution in southern central Europe. We also provide with new morphological characteristics of achenes and pollen for T. scanicum s.s. and T. prunicolor.

Opis:
Polar vascular plants native to the Arctic and the Antarctic geobotanical zone have been growing and reproducing effectively under difficult environmental conditions, colonizing frozen ground areas formerly covered by ice. Our macroscopic observations and microscopic studies conducted by means of a light microscope (LM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) concerning the anatomical and ultrastructural observations of vegetative and generative tissue in Cerastium arcticum, Colobanthus quitensis, Silene involucrata, plants from Caryophyllaceae and Deschampsia antarctica, Poa annua and Poa arctica, from Poaceae family. In the studies, special attention was paid to plants coming from diversity habitats where stress factors operated with clearly different intensity. In all examinations plants, differences in anatomy were considerable. In Deschampsia antarctica the adaxial epidermis of hairgrass leaves from a humid microhabitat, bulliform cells differentiated. Mesophyll was composed of cells of irregular shapes and resembled aerenchyma. The ultrastructural observations of mesophyll in all plants showed tight adherence of chloroplasts, mitochondria and peroxisomes, surface deformations of these organelles and formation of characteristic outgrowths and pocket concavities filled with cytoplasm with vesicles and organelles by chloroplasts. In reproduction biology of examined Caryophyllaceae and Poaceae plants growing in natural conditions, in the Arctic and in the Antarctic, and in a greenhouse in Olsztyn showed that this plant develops two types of bisexual flowers. Almost all ovules developed and formed seeds with a completely differentiated embryo both under natural conditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic and in a greenhouse in Olsztyn.

Induced mutation rate of barley esterase loci has been estimated. Results suggested that about 3% of investigated M₁ spikes had seeds which gave rise to M₂ seedlings mutated in one of four esterase loci. M₁ plants were obtained after chemical treatment of seeds from two spring barley cultivars Aramir and Bielik. The majority of mutants were reconfirmed in the М₃ generation.
