Opis:
The maintenance of seed viability over long periods of time in genebanks is a key element in conservation of plant genetic resources. In this work, data obtained at the Bulgarian National seed Genebank from the routine task of monitoring seed viability from soybean were analyzed. Differences between initial, first and second germination test after 11 and 34 years of long-term storage were assessed among 182 accessions from Glycine max (L.) Merr. The samples were regenerated during 1978-1981 growing seasons. On the basis of experimental data, the seed storage characters - σ, P50% and P10% were determined allowing the prediction of seed storage life and the regeneration needs. Significant decrease in seed viability after 11 years of storage was not recorded in the investigated soybean accessions from the different regeneration years. When comparing the initial germination percentages with results from the second control test after 34 years of storage were found significant differences in the loss of seed viability among genotypes from different regeneration years. The frequency of odd results were most significant for genotypes regenerated in 1981 (0.691) in comparison with these from other regeneration seasons. The highest Ki value (2.09) was recorded for accessions from 1981 harvest year; where rate of seed deterioration (1/σ) was also highest (-0.044). The lowest values both for Ki and 1/σ were found for the groups of accessions harvested in 1978 and 1979. There was a wide variation between groups of accessions regenerated in different years in both the time taken for viability to fall to 50% and the time for seed viability reduction with 10%. The predicted mean safe storage time for Glycine max (L.) Merr. was 25.54 years. Total 76 accessions or 42,2% of analyzed accessions had significant decrease of germination after 34 years of storage and would need regeneration.

Opis:
This study was carried out to determine the effects of packaging materials and storage periods on seed quality and longevity dynamics of an endangered tropical tree species, Pericopsis elata. The experimental period was December, 2015 to June, 2016. Seed collection was done at the Bobiri Forest Reserve. The seed storage experiment was set up using 3 x 6 factorial arrangements in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Six packaging materials (jute, nylon, paper, ziplock bag, airtight bottle and no packaging) and three storage periods (no storage, three months storage and six months storage) were used. Germination percentage, seed vigour, 1000 seed weight, moisture content, carbohydrate, protein and oil contents were assessed before storage, three months and six months after storage. P. elata seeds with initial moisture content of 7.5% and packaged in airtight bottle and ziplock bags maintained their moisture contents even as storage periods increased. The initial amounts of seed carbohydrates (1.9%), proteins (37.4%) and oil (31.3%) were maintained in the airtight packaging materials (bottle and ziplock bag) thereby improving seed storability. The seed viability equation predicted that P. elata seeds could be stored for 243 years after six months of storage. Seed viability dropped to 164 days after the accelerated aging test was performed on the six-months old stored seeds. The study concluded that the seeds of this important endangered tree can be stored in airtight containers before the next planting season without any loss in seed quality.

Opis:
The research was conducted on four patches of thermophilous oak wood in Białowieża Primeval Forest: A – with a woodstand: oak + approx. 30-year-old hornbeam + hornbeam brushwood; B – with a hornbeam stand formed by natural seed fall after logging (ca. 1920) oaks; C – after logging oaks and replanted (ca. 1965) with pine and oak; D – with a natural low-density oak stand. Species composition and seed bank density were estimated using the seedling emergence method. Seedling emergence was observed over two vegetation seasons. Research demonstrated that: 1) the species abundance of the seed banks depends on canopy cover (A, B approx. 50 species; C, D approx. 70 species); 2) the floristical similarity (Sørensen’s index) of the seed bank and ground vegetation is higher in the undisturbed patch D (0.50) than in disturbed patches (0.30-0.35); 3) species diversity in plots A, B, C, D (H’=12.5; 13.4; 15.5; 16.9) and seed bank density per m2 (432.5; 958.0; 1486.5; 2268.0) are negatively correlated with the degree of patch shading; 4) the average weight of diaspores in the seed banks of shady plots is lower (A, B approx. 0.003 g) than that of sunny plots (C, D approx. 0.08 g); 5) the share of long-lived diaspores increases in patches after logging.

Opis:
Stwierdzono zależność kształtowania plonowania nasion rutwicy wschodniej (Galega orientalis Lam.) od składu fitocenozy, czasu użytkowania runi i warunków hydrotermicznych w okresie wegetacji. Określono dynamikę regulacji procesu samoodnawiania populacji w zależności od zróżnicowania początkowego zagęszczenia roślin rutwicy. Udowodniono wysoki poziom produktywności nasiennych plantacji w ciągu 9 lat ich użytkowania.
Seed yielding in the eastern galega (Galega orientalis Lam.) was found to depend on the composition of phytocoenosis, time of sward utilisation and on hydro-thermal conditions during vegetation. The dynamics of population self-recruitment in relation to the initial plant density was estimated. A high productivity of seed plantations was demonstrated during 9 years of their utilisation.
