Opis:
Mountain almond (Amygdalus arabica) is a shrub with naturally distributing in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. A. arabica also known as bitter almond and can reach up to 2.5 m. The natural distribution of mountain almond is generally in the Southeast Region of Turkey. The present study carried out to determine the morphological and physiological characteristics of the seed of mountain almond. The seeds were collected from three different populations of A. arabica in Adıyaman. For different each populations seed weight, height, width, thickness, and 1000-seed weight were measured in the laboratory. Morphological characteristics of A. arabica seeds varied according to their populations. Seed germination tests were conducted at 20 °C, after prechilling for 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks at 4 °C. Prechilling treatments of 3 weeks were insufficient, but 6 and 9 weeks of prechilling were found to eliminate seed dormancy and led to the highest germination percentage. The average germination percentage after 0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks of prechilling were 3.1%, 49.6%, 80.4%, and 81.1%, respectively. The average mean germination time was approximately between 8 and 10 days.

Savin juniper (Juniperus sabina L.) is a relict shrub in Poland with only one natural stand in Pieniny Mts. Se- eds require warm followed by cold stratification to overcome dormancy. Application of temperature regime at 20°/3°C layout, for 14 and 17 weeks respectively, is more effective than stratification at 15°/3°C. Interruption of warm stratification phase after 7 weeks and seeds drying at room temperature for 3-days with warm stratification follow-on resulted in increasing of germination capacity from 25% to approximately 45%. Germinated seeds pricked to substrate into containers gave seedlings 3 cm high when cultivated under plastic tunnel in the first vegetation season.

Fruits of large-leaved lime dried to 10% may be stored for 16 years in sealed containers at –3°C without loosing seed viability. Dormancy of seeds, extracted from hard fruit coats, may be released after chemical scarification in concentrated sulphuric acid for 10 minutes, followed-by stratification without any medium (chilling) at the temperature of 3°C, for 20–24 weeks, i.e. until the first seeds start to germinate. After such pretreatment, during the germination test conducted at alternating temperatures 3~15°C (16 + 8 hours/day) seeds germinate near 90% in several weeks. For seedling production scarified and stratified seeds should be sown in early spring into trays under a plastic tunnel which ensures a high percentage of seedlings emergence. Sowing of the pretreated seeds in spring in a open nursery gives poor results.

Opis:
European bladder nut has its northern limit in Poland and is legally protected. Climatic conditions, edible seeds attractive for small animals and seed dormancy to a large extent affect its restocking under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to determine conditions for seed dormancy release. Nuts dried after collection to ca 11% of moisture content (fresh weight basis) may be stored without loss of seed viability for over 1 year in a cold store at the temperature of -3oC. For the purpose of seed dormancy release nuts need to be stratified. Seed dormancy release was found highest after the application of warm-followed-by-cold stratification, first for 4-6 weeks at the temperature of 15oC or at cyclically alternating temperature of 10~20oC (24+24 h/cycle), followed by 16-18 weeks at 3oC. Seeds germinate at 3oC with the same rate as at cyclically alternating temperature of 3~15oC (16+8 h/day). Drying of nuts at room temperature to approx. 11% during the warm stratification phase (after 2 or 4 weeks) and further stratification resulted in a significant increase in seed germinability. In some seed lots scarification of nuts (dried during the warm stratification phase) contributes to a further significant increase of seed germinability.

Opis:
This study analysed the effects of different treatments on breaking dormancy and germination of bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia L.) freshly harvested seeds for seeding immediately. Partial scarified seeds (30 seconds with sandpaper) were subjected to different treatments including: GA3 (250, 500 and 750 ppm), KNO3 (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% w/v), cold stratification (2, 4 and 6 days), sulfuric acid (25, 50 and 75 seconds), hot water (90°C; for 2.5 and 5 minutes), hydropriming via seed soaking in distilled water (4 and 8 hours) and mechanical scarification. Among the mentioned treatments, cold stratification for 6 days had a best effect on germination related parameters final germination percentage, mean germination time and vigour index than the other periods. In contrast to scarification with acid and hot water, mechanical scarification improved germination parameters but this effect was lower than the cold stratification. The results suggest that bitter vetch seed has both physical and physiological dormancy.

Carbohydrates were analyzed in Norway maple embryo axes and cotyledons after imbibition, in the middle of cold stratification, before germination and during radicle protrusion to 8-10 mm and 20-25 mm. Simultaneously desiccation tolerance of seeds was determined by tetrazolium (TTC) test, after desiccation of seeds to 10-20% of water content. The cotyledons were tolerant to desiccation throughout all stratification and germination period. Embryo axes became sensitive to desiccation when hypocotyls-radicle protrusion reached 20-25 mm length. In this period the significant increase of monosaccharides: glucose, fructose and galactose in embryo axes occurred. This was not observed in cotyledons. During the germination period significant decrease of sucrose and raffinose content was noted in embryo axes and cotyledons. Relatively less changes appeared in stachyose content in embryo axes while in cotyledons it decreased evidently. The mass ratio of sucrose to oligosaccharides was higher in cotyledons of germinated seeds. The marked decrease of mass ratio of oligo to monosaccharides was observed in embryo axes in the last period of germination. The role of carbohydrates in loosing tolerance to desiccation in germinated Norway maple seeds is discussed.

To study the effect of sonication on the seed germination percentage and rate as well as the cell area of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) a laboratorial experiment was performed as Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 replications. The results indicated that the ultrasonic waves affect the seed germination, germination rate and cell area significantly (at 0.05). The results of the mean comparison tests (LSD, 0.05) showed that the highest germination percentage (100 %), germination rate and cell area (1370.71 µ2 ) is achieved through 15 minutes exposure to ultrasonic waves. It is concluded that weakening the seed’s cell wall rigidity by sonication results in more and faster water imbibition by the cells and improved germination.

Opis:
The investigation of dormancy release in Aesculus hippocastanum seeds was aimed at estimating the proportion of coat-imposed to embryo dormancy, and studying the growth initiation providing embryo dormancy release. During winter, horse chestnut seeds exhibited 16–17 week-lasting deep dormancy, which predominantly was determined by coat-imposed dormancy. Embryo dormancy lasted for 11–12 weeks of wet cold stratification. Embryo dormancy was weak, even the embryo axes excised from deeply dormant seeds were capable of extending to the size exceeding the axis length in intact seeds at radicle protrusion. Embryo dormancy release manifested itself in gradually increasing growth capacity of both embryo axes and cotyledonary petioles. The growth initiation in horse chestnut seeds occurs only by cell elongation. During growth initiation, a more rapid fresh weight gain was observed in comparison with length increment, thus indicating that accumulation of osmotically active substances and active water uptake by embryo axis cells were ahead of their increasing longitudinal cell wall extensibility. Cell wall loosening appeared to be directly related to embryo dormancy release. The hormonal regulation of embryo dormancy release in horse chestnut seeds is discussed.

We analysed changes in the activity of phosphofructokinase (PFK) and phosphoenolopyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), and in the glucose and sucrose contents of Norway maple seeds stratified at 3°C (dormancy broken) or treated at temperature 15°C (dormancy not broken). We found that changes in the activity of enzymes are not linear, and 2-3 stages may be distinguished. Dormancy breaking and seed germination is associated with a high activity of PFK and PEPC, and a high glucose level in embryo axes.

In Iran, Descurainia sophia, Malcolmia africana, and Thlaspi arvense are abundantly found as importunate weeds in winter cereal. Understanding the timing of seed germination under natural conditions is crucial for learning how to manage these annual weeds. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil burial, dry storage, cold stratification, KNO3, GA3, and scarification on the seed dormancy and germination of these three species. Species had significantly different responses to the treatment. In D. sophia, seeds buried at a depth of 10 cm for 60 days (55%), and seeds dry stored at 20°C for 180 days (45%) showed the highest level of germination. In M. africana, the germination percentage reached 95% when seeds buried at a depth of 1 cm were soaked in a GA3 concentration of 150 ppm. T. arvense had the lowest level of germination compared to the other species. The highest percentage of T. arvense germination was obtained in seeds treated with 150 ppm GA3. Potassium nitrate partly increased germinability in seeds of M. africana, which initially were less dormant than those of T. arvense and D. sophia.

Wildolive seeds (Olea europaea L. var. sylvestris), calledoleaster do not germinate when placedunder favourable conditions. In a series of experiments the effects of the harvest date, the endosperm, the tegument, andthe coldtreatment were evaluatedon germination of seeds andembryos. The germination percentage of embryos and seeds harvested at different harvest dates increased during October month, these percentages decreased during November month, whereas no seeds and embryos harvested on the middle of December germinated. Embryo germinability was always higher than seed germinability, and this may be due to an inhibiting effect of the teguments and the endosperm on seed germination. Such dormancy, which gradually increased during maturation, could reside mainly in the endosperm and partly within the embryo. The cold treatment at 4°C for four to thirteen days increased seed and embryo germinability, whereas lengthening time at this temperature showeda negative effect on seedgermination. The germination of seeds andembryos from six wildolive trees was also examinedby recording the germination percentage andminimum imbibition time (Tmi).

Iris species have great economic importance for their use in ornamental and pharmaceutical industry. Flora of Turkey reports about 43 local taxons of which 16 are endemic. Iris suaveolens Boiss. et Reuter is an endemic species with high seed dormancy and has high tolerance to cold and drought. This study focused on seed dormancy break of I. suaveolens under in vitro conditions. In the first experiment, the seeds were given stratification treatment on MS medium containing different concentrations of BAP with or without NAA. The 2nd experiment reports effects of alternative combinations of cold (at 4°C, 24 h dark) – warm (16 h light photoperiod) conditions on medium containing different concentrations of plant growth regulators on agar solidified MS medium. Both experiments showed about 8.33% seed germination against 64.5% seed viability as confirmed by tetrazolium test. All germinating seeds were abnormal and very weak. In the third experiment, 10 minutes acid scarified seeds cultured at 24°C in 16 h light photo period on MS medium achieved 60.0% germination. Similar treatment under cold + dark condition was inhibitory and failed to show identical results. This underlines the importance of acid scarification, photoperiod and warm treatments of I. suaveolens seeds to break seed dormancy. All germinated seeds showed normal growth and development under field conditions.
