This paper presents vertical distribution of 137Cs, 226Ra and 239,240Pu in bottom sediments collected from the Southern Baltic Sea in the years 1998-2000. In the southern part of Baltic Sea the highest concentrations of 137Cs and 239,240Pu were observed at the Gulf of Gdansk. Deposition of 137Cs ranged from 1990š402 Bq m-2 in the Bornholm Basin to 3260š820 Bq m-2 in the Gulf of Gdansk. Depositions of 239,240Pu in the Bornholm Basin were 28.1-30.4 Bq m-2 and in Gulf of Gdansk 162-174 Bq m-2. The concentration peaks of long-lived radionuclides, owing to the sedimentation processes, show the maximum fallout period in different sediment layers. The observed differences in distribution of radiocaesium and plutonium along the profile confirm two main sources of contamination - Chernobyl fallout for 137Cs and global fallout in case of 239,240Pu. In chosen core samples from the Gdansk Basin vertical distribution of 210Pb concentrations were determined. Evaluated sedimentation rates based on decrease of unsupported 210Pb ranged in the Gdansk Basin from 1.9 to 2.3 mm year-1. Calculations based on 239,240Pu peaks show sedimentation rate, in the range from 1.6-2.2 mm year-1 for P110 region.

This investigation reports the preliminary results for determining the sedimentation rate at the Amazonas River mouth, Brazil, by the 210Pb method. The CIC (constant initial concentration) of unsupported/excess 210Pb model was successfully applied to one sediments core. The measurements were made in a sediments core comprising ten samples 10 cm – thick each. The year of the sampling (2006) was used as reference for the establishment of the rate of sedimentation from the beginning of the top of the testimony. However, the atmospheric conditions and climate in Amapá State, Brazil, claimed for optimization of the results. Because the Channel North is opened into the Atlantic Ocean, it exhibits a huge water volume, causing a permanent motion of sediments and water. So, heavy waves are formed at the water surface, stirring the upper sand strata. Only at a depth of 40–50 cm the profile tends to be more homogeneous, where it is mostly composed by fine sand and very fine sand. Thus, it is reasonable utilize the CIC model from 210Pb data, which allows estimate a sedimentation rate corresponding to 0.61 g/cm²yr and a mean linear rate of 0.8 cm/yr. The 238U and 210Pb activities in the sediments allowed the reconstruction of the sedimentation processes over a period of about 130 years.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań przebiegu procesu sedymentacji w obszarze ujściowym rzeki Amazonki. Do oceny intensywności sedymentacji wykorzystano model CIC (Constant Initial Concentration) aktywności 210Pb, którą badano w dziesięciu 10-cm warstwach osadu pobranego w 2006 roku. Zastosowana metoda pozwoliła na ocenę przebiegu procesu sedymentacji osadów w okresie 130 lat. Górne warstwy osadów o miąższości 40–50 cm posiadają zaburzoną strukturę i aktywność 210Pb, spowodowaną okresowym oddziaływaniem fal oceanicznych i wód słonych. Dolne warstwy osadu, w których dominują piaski bardzo drobne i drobne, posiadają homogeniczną strukturę oraz liniowo zmienną aktywność 210Pb. Stwierdzono, że średnia intensywność sedymentacji w analizowanym obszarze wynosi 0,61 g⋅cm–²⋅rok–1, co odpowiada warstwie o miąższości 0,8 cm⋅rok–1.

Five bottom sediment cores from the Kuwait Bay were dated using 210Pb and 137Cs radionuclides. For evaluating the sedimentation rate two methods were applied: geochronology with the constant rate of supply unsupported 210Pb (CRS model) and the Weibull distribution of anthropogenic 137Cs. The sedimentation rates in this region, calculated by the first method ranged from 0.24 to 0.39 cm/year, while the same rates obtained from 137Cs distribution were slightly lower: from 0.1 to 0.25 cm/year. These relatively small differences can be explained by additional input of the Chernobyl accident to the 137Cs inventory in the bottoms sediments of the Northern Hemisphere.

In order to study recent sedimentation rates in the Eastern Gotland Basin, 52 short sediment cores collected from the deepest part (<150 m)of the Basin in 2003 were investigated. The upper parts of all the cores were distinctly laminated and dark in colour, followed by a homogeneous, greyish lower part. The thickness of the laminated sequences varied from 17 to 300 mm. 210Pb dating analyses of selected cores revealed that the change from non-laminated to laminated sediments happened about 100 years ago, indicating a shift from predominantly oxic bottom water conditions to anoxic conditions. Used as a time marker, this shift in the sediment texture enabled sediment accumulation rates to be estimated for all sediment cores. The observed mean linear sedimentation rate for the whole basin was 0.93 ± 0.67 mm yr−1. The respective bulk sediment accumulation rates ranged from 10.5 to 527 g m−2 yr−1 with an average of 129 ± 112 g m−2 yr−1, indicating a high spatial variability of sedimentation rates within the basin. This agrees very well with the long-term sedimentation pattern since the Litorina transgression. The observed pattern clearly reflects the hydrographic conditions at the seafloor as studied by modelled near-bottom current velocities.

Sedimentation rates and dating of bottom sediments were estimated in two sampling stations of the Gulf of Gdańsk and in four stations in the open sea area. Estimations were based on vertical distributions of 210Pb, 137Cs and 239,240Pu activity concentrations in sediment core samples taken in 1998–2007. Two dating models based on changes of activity concentrations of 210Pbunsup were used: 1) CF:CS (Constant Flux Constant Sedimentation rate-model) and 2) CRS (Constant Rate of Supply-model). 137Cs and 239,240Pu were applied as time markers. 137Cs originates mostly from the Chernobyl accident in 1986, whereas 239,240Pu comes from the global fallout in 1963. The validation of the 210Pb methods was performed by activity peak of 137Cs and 239,240Pu. Sediment accumulation rate (g·cm–2·y–1) was constant along sediment core. Annually accumulated layer, (mm·y–1) decreased with sediment depth in all the locations. In the Gulf of Gdańsk sedimentation rate in the upper layer was about 3.6 mm·y–1, and it decreased in the deeper layers to about 1.1 mm·y–1. Sedimentation rates in the open sea area were lower than in the gulf region and the lowest was observed in the Bornholm Deep, being about 0.95 mm·y–1 in the upper layer and 0.35 mm·y–1 in the deeper layer. The growth of a 5 cm thick layer took 27–37 years in the Gulf of Gdańsk, and 61–105 years in the open sea area. It is suggested that the mean values obtained from the models would give a most reliable estimation of the sedimentation rates.

Human activities such as logging, land conservation, road construction and other disturbances in watersheds will increase erosion rate and thus the amount of sediment transported into the river that reaches lakes, reservoirs and sea. Accelerated sedimentation rate in the reservoir can signifi cantly reduce a reservoir’s surface area, eliminating wetland area surrounding the reservoir and shallow the areas near the shore of the reservoir. A study of sedimentation rate in the Timah Tasoh water reservoir was carried out from May 2001 to April 2002 by means of sediment traps. The aim of this study is to determine the spatial and temporal pattern of sedimentation rates in the reservoir. The sediment traps were installed at five different locations in the reservoir and replaced every month. Gross sedimentation rates measured in the sediment traps vary from about an average of 1.4 kg/m2/month or 16.3 kg/m2/yr in the deepest part of the reservoir to about 79.2 kg/m2/yr (monthly average of 6.6 kg/m2/month) and 47.1 kg/m2/yr (monthly average of 3.9 kg/m2/month) near the inlet of the Pelarit River and the Tasoh River respectively. The sedimentation rate near the Pelarit River and the Tasoh River inflow is correlated with the water and suspended sediment discharge in the river, owing to its proximity to the rivers and the fl ooding effect, mainly during the wet season. The sedimentation rate decreases southward along the reservoir, as a result of increasing distance from the river mouth. The total suspended sediment load of the Upper Pelarit River and the Jarum River flowing into the reservoir is 11.4 × 103 ton/year and 5.41 × 103 ton/ /year respectively.
Na podstawie szczegółowych łapaczkowych pomiarów terenowych przedstawiono zmiany przestrzenne i czasowe (2001–2002) ilości sedymentu w zbiorniku wodnym Timah Tasoh w Malezji. Łapaczki umieszczone w pięciu punktach zbiornika opróżniano co 5 miesięcy. Zmiany ilości sedymentu wykazano liczbowo na tle ilości dostarczanego rumowiska do zbiornika z rzek Pelarit oraz Jarum.

Opis:
River floodplains have been recognized as an important sink for suspended sediments and associated contaminants mobilized from upstream catchments. However, information on rates of overbank sedimentation within time span of several tens of years is impossible to obtain using conventional sediment traps. Measurements of the 210Pb content in floodplain sediments provide an alternative approach for obtaining estimates of medium-term (100–150 years) rates of overbank sediment deposition. The use of 210Pb method and heavy metals concentration profiles allowed to obtain retrospective estimates of recent sedimentation rates on floodplain of the Warta River (the Cracow Upland, southern Poland). The results are compared with dating of sediment layers by characteristic peaks of heavy metal concentrations. The highest sediment accretion rate, of the order of 1 cm/year, was found in a levee along river bank. Sediment deposition in flood basin is much slower and usually does not exceed 1 mm/year.

Corals are known to flourish in various turbid environments around the world. The quantitative distinction between clear and turbid water in coral habitats is not well defined nor are the amount of sediment in suspension and rates of sedimentation used to evaluate the condition of reef environments well established. This study of sedimentation rate, sediment composition and pH, OC deposition was on a fringing reef flat off Thoothukudi and Vembar group of islands, Gulf of Mannar, India. In the present study the sedimentation rate ranged from 1.97 mg/cm2/day to 12.31 mg/cm2/day. The percentage of sand in the sediment was higher than silt and clay. The organic carbon level in all the study stations ranged from 0.03 to 2.54. The sediment pH of the six studied stations was highly acidic in nature at all the study sites in the Gulf of Mannar.

This case study applied the Dahn Taekwondo Spondylitis Improvement Program (DTSIP) to a 30-year-old male with ankylosing spondylitis five times a week for 28 weeks. Materials and Methods: A 32-year-old male with ankylosing spondylitis underwent the Dahn Taekwondo Spondylitis Improvement Program (DTSIP), an amalgamated program of standard Western medicine practices and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) exercises based in the oriental medicine practices of yoga and taekwondo. The subject performed the DTSIP 5 times a week for 90 minutes for 28 weeks. Results: First, blood C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and platelet levels decreased by approximately 29-71%. Second, blood leukocyte counts decreased by about 11%. Third, as a result of Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) measurement, tragus to wall (TWD), lumbar side flexion (LSF), LF (lumbar flexion), and intermalleolar distance (IMD) were improved substantially. The students' cervical vertebrae and thoracic and lumbar vertebrae ranges of motion were additionally improved. The range of motion of the shoulder and hip joint improved. Conclusions: Therefore, the DTSIP seems to have a positive effect on the inflammation, immune functions, and spine and joint range of motion in the subject of this case study. Future studies are required with a wider sample population to validate these results.

The Silurian Pelplin Formation is a part of a thick, mud-prone distal fill of the Caledonian foredeep, which stretches along the western margin of the East European Craton. The Pelplin Formation consists of organic carbon-rich mudstones that have recently been the target of intensive investigations, as they represent a potential source of shale gas. The Pelplin mudstones host numerous calcite concretions containing authigenic pyrite and barite. Mineralogical and petrographic examination (XRD, optical microscopy, cathodoluminoscopy, SEM-EDS) and stable isotope analyses (δ13Corg, δ13C and δ18O of carbonates, δ34S and δ18O of barite) were carried out in order to understand the diagenetic conditions that led to precipitation of this carbonate-sulfide-sulfate paragenesis and to see if the concretions can enhance the understanding of sedimentary settings in the Baltic and Lublin basins during the Silurian. Barite formed during early diagenesis before and during the concretionary growth due to a deceleration of sedimentation during increased primary productivity. The main stages of concretionary growth took place in yet uncompacted sediments shortly after their deposition in the sulfate reduction zone. This precompactional cementation led to preferential preservation of original sedimentary structures, faunal assemblages and earlydiagenetic barite, which have been mostly lost in the surrounding mudstones during burial. These components allowed for the reconstruction of important paleoenvironmental conditions in the Baltic and Lublin basins, such as depth, proximity to the detrital orogenic source and marine primary productivity. Investigation of the concretions also enabled estimation of the magnitude of mechanical compaction of the mudstones and calculation of original sedimentation rates. Moreover, it showed that biogenic methane was produced at an earlydiagenetic stage, whereas thermogenic hydrocarbons migrated through the Pelplin Formation during deep burial.

In the Upper Silesian Coal Basin highly mineralized mine waters are pumped into numerous sedimentary ponds before discharge to the Vistula river. They contain elevated concentrations of natural radionuclides (mainly radium). In ponds, some fraction of radionuclides is removed from the water column by adsorption on settling particles, precipitation or co-precipitation, thus increasing radioactivity levels in the deposits. Due to fluctuations of water level and wind action, fine fraction of the deposited material can be distributed in the vicinity of ponds. Three ponds have been selected for survey of the gamma equivalent dose: Brzeszcze, Kaniów, and Rontok Duży. The lowest dose rates, below 0.33 miSv/h, were detected in the area of the Brzeszcze pond. The highest values were measured over the sediments of the Kaniow pond (8.37 miSv/h), being 30 times higher than the dose rate received by population in Poland from natural sources.

Opis:
Główne zanieczyszczenie ścieków opadowych stanowi zawiesina, która z reguły jest nośnikiem większości innych substancji występujących w spływach opadowych. Ładunek zawiesiny odprowadzany do środowiska wodnego jest regulowany prawem. W praktyce inżynierskiej do usuwania zawiesiny ze ścieków opadowych z powodzeniem można wykorzystać urządzenia z ruchem wirowym np. osadniki wirowe, przelewy o specjalnej konstrukcji wykazujące przewagę nad tradycyjnymi osadnikami poziomymi.
The main type of polution in stormwater sewage are suspended particles which tend to carry most of other substances present in stormwater. The suspended particle load transported to the hydrosphere is subject to legal regulations. In engineering practice, suspended particles are success-fully removed from sewage with the application of swirl chamber eqipment, e.g. whirl sediment traps and specially constructed flow control devices, operating more efficiently than traditional horizontal traps.

Opis:
The clarification of industrial wastewaters by solid–liquid separation techniques and the removal of suspended particles are the problems of growing environmental consciousness. However, there appears to be very limited number of studies reported in the literature to investigate the flocculation and settling properties of ceramic wastewaters. The efficiency of solid/liquid separation may be greatly improved by the application of synthetic polymeric flocculants, particularly in mineral processing plant where sedimentation, filtration and centrifugation processes are extensively used. In ceramic plants, the water used in ceramic processing is contaminated with suspended quartz, feldspar and associated clay particles, which results in a so-called wastewater problem which have to be dealt with from an environmental point of view. In this study, sedimentation of ultrafine particles from ECE Ceramic Co. (Çorum/Turkey) ceramic wastewater sample was investigated using three anionic polymeric flocculants (Superfloc A-130, Superfloc A-100 and Enfloc 330A). The performances of the flocculant in the experimental studies were assessed with the change in the interfaces height during sedimentation resultant. The best performance was obtained Superfloc A-130. At the dose of 60 g/t for A-130, the settling rate was shorter than 60 seconds.
Klarowanie ścieków przemysłowych technikami rozdzielania substancji stałych i ciekłych oraz usuwanie zawieszonych cząsteczek jest problemem rosnącej świadomości ekologicznej. Jednakże okazuje się, że istnieje bardzo ograniczona liczba przedstawionych w literaturze badań dotyczących flokulacji i właściwości osiadania ścieków ceramicznych. Efektywność separacji ciało stałe/ciecz, może być znacznie poprawiona przez zastosowanie syntetycznych flokulantów polimerycznych, zwłaszcza w zakładach przetwórstwa minerałów, gdy szeroko stosowane są procesy sedymentacji, filtracji i wirowania. W zakładach ceramiki, woda stosowana w obróbce wyrobów ceramicznych zanieczyszczona jest przez zawieszony kwarc, skaleń i związane cząstki gliny, co prowadzi do tak zwanego problemu ścieków, które muszą być rozpatrywane z punktu widzenia ochrony środowiska. W badaniu tym, sedymentacja cząstek ultradrobnych z próbki ścieków ceramicznych z ECE Ceramic Co (Çorum, Turcja) została zbadana z zastosowaniem trzech polimerowych flokulantów anionowych (Superfloc-130, Superfloc 100 i Enfloc 330A). Charakterystyka działania flokulantu w badaniach doświadczalnych była oceniana za pomocą zmiennej wysokości interfejsów podczas sedymentacji końcowych. Najlepsze wyniki uzyskano z użyciem Superfloc A-130. Dla dawki dawce 60 g A-130/t, szybkość osadzania była krótsza niż 60 sekund.
