    The Carpathian Foredeep Basin is the northern compartment of a foreland basin system that surrounds the Carpathian orogenic belt. The Roztocze Hills area, during Badenian deposition, belonged to the northern part of the outer ramp of the Carpatian Foreland Basin. The sedimentary conditions of the clastic Badenian deposits of the Roztocze Hills are reconstructed, in the territories of Poland and Ukraine. The lithology and sedimentary structures of clastic rocks point to a high-energy, shallow-water, normal-marine environment connected with the offshore and open sea zone. The characteristic of the Badenian succession allows an interpretation of the environment and its change during sedimentation. Deposition during the Badenian in the Roztocze Hills area was strongly connected with the evolution of the Carpathian Foredeep. Initially sedimentation was mainly dependent on hydrodynamic factors and connected with the outer ramp conditions. However, during the Late Badenian, the influence of diastrophic factors gradually increased and sedimentation was connected with outer foredeep conditions.

    The study focuses on Upper Cretaceous - Palaeocene deposits from the Beskid Śląski mountain range in southern Poland constituting the Istebna Beds. The Istebna Beds, also referred to as the Istebna Formation, are part of the Silesian tectonic unit, which forms the Outer Carpathian fold-and-thrust belt (part of the Alpine-Carpathian system). The results of qualitative and quantitative lithological-sedimentological studies were the basis for the interpretation of lithofacies types, sedimentary processes and palaeoenvironment as well as for the reconstruction of the architecture of the depositional system. The analysis conducted on the basis of field description of the deposits shows the prevalence (nearly 70%) of siliciclastic strata representing a sandstone-conglomerate association (S-C), which is the main subject of this work. The S-C lithofacies: sandstones, gravelly sandstones, sandy conglomerates and conglomerates constitute the deposits formed mostly by mass gravity-flows such as sandy-to-gravelly debris flows. The distribution of the coarse-clastic material indicates a sediment supply from southerly directions and implies the presence of an active source area in the rear part of the Silesian Basin. A succession of the sandstone-to-conglomerate deposits with the secondary participation of other lithofacies, with a thickness of approximately two thousand metres, indicates temporary increased diastrophic activity in the Silesian Ridge (source area) and the intense denudation of this area. The uplift of the alimentation area and its destruction coinciding with enforced relative regression and the uncovering of the proximal depositional zone of the basin led to resedimentation of the older intrabasinal material and repeated mass deposition together with delivery of extraclasts of pre-existing rocks and minerals. The lithofacies development of the sandstone-to-conglomerate debrites and the related sedimentary palaeotransport directions suggest an accumulation domain in the form of a linear apron depositional system developed in a deep-water setting. Experimental modelling of subaqueous sandy flows has contributed to a better understanding of the complex genesis of deep-water sediment gravity flows developing in depositional systems rich in sand material.

    Opis:
    Well-developed N-S trending esker, described in literature as the Gostynin esker, consists of parallel ridges associated witch a tunnel valey flanked by the Vistulian (Weichselian) till plain. The sedimentary succession of one of the ridges is known in the Osada site. Complexity of the esker internal structure is expressed by 4 sedimentary units of different environments. The lowest, coarsegravelly (O1), developed by infilling a subglacial tunnel. The following one, making the main part of the esker ridge, is a sandy unit (O2) deposited in an ice-walled open channel. Locally, the deposits show normal synsedimentary faults. The O3 unit of fine-grained sediments was laid in a stagnant water. The succession is topped by a thin discontinous layer of flow till (O4). Sedimentation took place when the ice-sheet changed its dynamics from active to stagnant.

    The Upper Turonian Grossberg Formation of the Regensburg area (Danubian Cretaceous Group, Bavaria, southern Germany) has a mean thickness of 20-25 m and consists of sandy bioclastic calcarenites and calcareous sandstones which are rich in bryozoans, serpulids and bivalves (oysters, rudists, inoceramids). Eight facies types have been recognized that characterize deposition on a southward dipping homoclinal ramp: the inner ramp sub-environment was characterized by high-energy sandwave deposits (sandy bioclastic rud- and grainstones, bioclastic sandstones) with sheltered inter-shoal areas. In mid-ramp settings, bioturbated, glauconitic, calcareous sand- and siltstones as well as bioturbated, bioclastic wacke- and packstones predominate. The carbonate grain association of the Grossberg Formation describes a temperate bryomol facies with indicators of warm-water influences. An inferred surplus of land-derived nutrients resulted in eutrophic conditions and favoured the heterozoan communities of the Grossberg Ramp. Carbon stable isotope geochemistry cannot significantly contribute to the stratigraphic calibration of the Grossberg Formation due to the depleted and trendless bulk-rock [delta^13]C values, probably resulting from a shallow-water aquafacies with depleted [delta^13]C DIC values and low [delta^13]C values of syndepositional and early diagenetic carbonate phases. However, strongly enriched skeletal calcite [delta^13]C values support a correlation of the Grossberg Formation with the mid-Late Turonian positive Hitch Wood isotope event (Hyphantoceras Event of northern Germany). This interpretation is supported by biostratigraphic data and a range from the Mytiloides striatoconcentricus Zone into the lower My. scupini Zone is indicated by inoceramid bivalves. Both the base and top of the Grossberg Formation are characterized by unconformities. Sequence boundary SB Tu 4 at the base is a major regional erosion surface (erosional truncation of the underlying Kagerhoh Formation in the Regensburg area, fluvial incision at the base of the Seugast Member of the Roding Formation in the Bodenwohr area towards the north and northeast). It is suggested that this unconformity corresponds to a major sea-level drop recognized in many other Cretaceous basins below the Hitch Wood or Hyphantoceras Event. The transgression and highstand of the Grossberg Formation is concomitant to the deposition of the fluvial Seugast Member and the onlap of the marginal-marine. Veldensteiner Sandstein. onto the Frankische Alb. The unconformity at the top of the Grossberg Formation (late Late Turonian SB Tu 5) is indicated by a ferruginous firm-/ hardground and an underlying zone of strongly depleted [delta^13]C values. The abrupt superposition by deeper marine marls of the lower Hellkofen Formation (uppermost Turonian.Lower Coniacian) may be connected with inversion tectonics at the southwestern margin of the Bohemian Massif.

    W typowych profilach trzech neogeńskich pokładów węgla brunatnego odsłaniających się w kopalniach odkrywkowych na Niżu Polskim i w basenach satelickich zostały przeprowadzone studia porównawcze makro- i mikrofacjalne oraz geochemiczne, w skład których wchodziły badania: sedymentologiczne, paleobotaniczne (w szczególności analiza palinologiczna), litologiczne i petrograficzne węgla oraz geochemiczne. W wyniku tych badań wyróżniono szereg facji, uwarunkowanych głównie czynnikami hydrologicznymi, które można powiązać z subśrodowiskami sedymentacji jeziorno-bagiennej, współcześnie zasiedlonymi przez określone zbiorowiska roślinne. Najbardziej pełny zestaw takich subśrodowisk został przedstawiony dla II łużyckiego pokładu węgla brunatnego w niecce żytawskiej. Sukcesja subśrodowisk sedymentacyjnych i związanych z nimi zbiorowisk roślinnych jest w zasadzie porównywalna z naturalną sukcesją roślinną zarastania zbiornika jeziornego, jednak często bywa zaburzana w związku ze zmianami poziomu wód gruntowych: podnoszenia się w wyniku działania mechanizmów auto- (kompakcja niżejległych osadów, szczególnie istotna w przypadku przejścia od torfu do węgla brunatnego) i allochtonicznych (subsydencja tektoniczna). Podobne zaburzenia mogły powodować także czynniki sedymentacyjne, takie jak progradacja litosomów klastycznych lub podniesienie bazy erozyjnej w następstwie ruchów eustatycznych. Badania wykazały, że tylko kompleksowe badania mikro- i makrofacjalne dają podstawy do przedstawienia wiarygodnej rekonstrukcji środowiska sedymentacji węglotwórczej. Najistotniejsze wyniki pracy stanowi rekonstrukcja następstwa zbiorowisk roślinnych i wnioski na temat zmian warunków hydrologicznych i hydrogeologicznych.
    Some selected profiles of three Neogene lignite seams outcropped within opencast mines in the Polish Lowlands and satellite basins have been examined for comparison of macro- and microfacies and geochemical features. The investigations included: sedimenological research, paleobotanical investigation (particularly palynological analysis), lithological and petrographic study of lignite and geochemical examinations of coal have been made there. Some facies related to recent lacustrine/paludal sedimentary subenvironments, qualified at first by hydrological conditions and corresponding with floristic habitats have been established. The most complete inventory of sedimentary subenvironments has been defined within the 2nd lignite seam in the Zittau Basin. The sedimentary subenvironment succession and related floral communities is generally conformable with a natural plant succesion of a lake overgrowth. However, it was frequently interrupted after groundwater level changes: uplifting in the result of autochtonic mechanism (compaction of underlying sediments, most substantial in the case peat to lignite) and allochtonic one (tectonic subsidence). Also sedimentary factors, like progradation of clastic lithosomes and elevation of erosional base after eustatic movements could take part in the disruptions. The examination show that only integrated macro- and microfacial analysis makes it possible to present a reliable reconstrustion of the coal-forming sedimentary environment. The reconstruction of the succession of plant communities and conclusions on hydrological/hydrogeological conditions are the most substantial results of the work.

    Apermanent trend in the geological studies is coding of lithologic data in order to simplify and shorten its description, and to storage data easily in digital form. The aim of this paper is to propose a lithogenetic code, which as far as it is possible systematizes all found types of aeolian deposits. Therefore, such a code contains not only lithologic data but also explains the deposit origin. Moreover, such a way of description helps out to use it in the POLEOL database. To accept deposition process as a criterion for distinguishing lithologic units in aeolian environment was proposed. Hence, genetic types of deposits can be distinguished, which are related to the following subenvironments: 1) windward subenvironment, in which deposition occurs on the surface exposed to wind action, and depends on wind velocity and ground moisture, and 2) subenvironment of dune lee face, in which deposits are accumulated on the distal slope of dune mostly by gravitational redeposition and/or grain fall on the surfaces sheltered from the wind. Such a systematization of the deposit units gives a possibility of making palaeogeographic reconstructions including determining: a) wind conditions, b) morphometric and dynamic features of forms, c) after further studies and collecting of greater number of data-lithotype features of the genetic types of dunes.

    Celem pracy była interpretacja środowisk depozycji utworów dolnego oligocenu, nazywanych warstwami podgrybowskimi i grybowskimi, z obrębu tzw. jednostki grybowskiej występujących w oknach tektonicznych Grybowa i Ropy oraz porównanie i wzajemne skorelowanie ich z warstwami menilitowymi z obrębu jednostki dukielskiej (ss.) z rejonu Dukli i Tylawy. Wyniki zostały oparte na badaniach sedymentologicznych i geochemicznych (Rock-Eval, biomarkery) uzupełnionych badaniami biostratygraficznymi, w celu określenia ich pozycji stratygraficznej. Wskazują one na odmienne warunki ich powstania niż dotychczas przyjmowano w wielu publikacjach, szczególnie w kontekście głębokości oligoceńskiego basenu sedymentacyjnego Karpat, i dają kolejne argumenty do zmiany poglądów na jego ewolucję. Przeprowadzone badania wskazują na znaczne podobieństwo litologiczne i dużo mniejsze podobieństwo geochemiczne warstw występujących w oknach tektonicznych do tych z obrębu jednostki dukielskiej (ss.). Główny powód różnicy wynika z ich stopnia pogrzebania i z wyższego zaangażowania tektonicznego warstw występujących w oknach tektonicznych, które weszły w fazę generowania węglowodorów i je wygenerowały. Niewielkie ilości ropy naftowej nadal są w ich obrębie zakumulowane.
    The aim of the work was to interpret the depositional environments of the Lower Oligocene Subgrybow and Grybow beds from the Grybow Unit, which are present in Grybow and Ropa tectonic windows, as well as the comparison and correlation between them and Menilite Beds from the Dukla Unit (ss.) in the area of Dukla and Tylawa. The results, based on sedimentological and geochemical studies (Rock Eval, biomarkers) supplemented by the biostratigraphic studies conducted to determine their stratigraphic position, show, that their origin differs from that presented in many previous papers, especially in the context of the depth of the Carpathian Oligocene sedimentary basin. They also provide some new arguments for revision views on its evolution. The results of research, show their lithological similarity, but to a lesser extent the geochemical similarity of beds occurring in tectonic windows and those in the area of the Dukla Unit (ss.). The main reason for such a difference is due to their different degree of burial maturation and tectonic evolution. Rocks from the tectonic windows were in the hydrocarbon generation window and generated hydrocarbons. Small amounts of crude oil are still being accumulated within them.

    Warstwy menilitowe od wielu lat są przedmiotem szerokiego zainteresowania w zakresie ich potencjału naftowego. Towarzyszy temu ciągle zadawane pytanie o ich środowisko sedymentacji. Zbierane systematycznie dane z różnych obszarów jednostek śląskiej i dukielskiej, z punktu widzenia coraz nowszej wiedzy o środowiskach sedymentacji utworów klastycznych, dostarczają dowodów na ich genezę. Łuska Stróż to zachodnie przedłużenie fałdu Gorlic, gdzie w profilu warstw menilitowych, podobnie jak w obrębie fałdu Gorlic, potwierdzono występowanie dowodów na płytkowodną sedymentację. W ich profilu wyróżniono dziewięć facji osadowych (A-I), zarówno węglanowych, jak i drobno-, grubo- i bardzo gruboklastycznych o zmiennych, zarówno strukturalnych, jak i tekstualnych cechach, oraz zinterpretowano ich genezę. Charakterystyczną cechą omawianego profilu jest dominujący udział facji klastycznych (F i G), które budują tzw. piaskowce magdaleńskie. Facje te stanowią prawie 90% jego miąższości. Facja F (gruboławicowe masywne piaskowce glaukonitowe) zinterpretowana jest jako osad zdeponowany w proksymalnej części delty. Facja G – zlepieńce polimiktyczne – zinterpretowana została jako osad przybrzeżny (klifowy). Pozostałe facje klastyczne (H i I), odpowiednio heterolitowa i piaskowcowa, występujące głównie w górnej części profilu, na podstawie obecności w nich charakterystycznych struktur sedymentacyjnych zostały zinterpretowane jako facje osadowe powstałe w środowisku przybrzeżnym zdominowanym procesami pływowymi z udziałem procesów sztormowych. Wśród struktur sedymentacyjnych po raz pierwszy rozpoznano i opisano rytmity pływowe, które dodatkowo zostały zinterpretowane jako produkt pływów syzygijnych i kwadraturowych. Geneza facji węglanowych (A, B i C) nie jest jednoznaczna, ale obecność w skale drobnych kryształów gipsu może wskazywać, że deponowane były w płytkowodnym, hipersalinarnym środowisku sedymentacji. Opisane facje oraz ich geneza wskazują, że warstwy menilitowe w obrębie łuski Stróż (podobnie jak i w obrębie fałdu Gorlic) powstawały w płytkowodnym, prawdopo- dobnie zamkniętym basenie sedymentacyjnym z okresową łącznością z oceanem światowym, na co wskazywać może obecność struktur pływowych.
    For many years Menilite Beds have been the subject of wide interest from the petroleum potential point of view. This has been accompanied by constantly asked question about their sedimentary environment. Data collected systematically from various areas of the Silesian and Dukla Units, taking under consideration the latest knowledge about clastic sedimentary environments, provide evidence for their genesis. Stróże Thrust Sheet is the western extension of the Gorlice fold (Gorlice Thrust Sheet), where in the section of the Menilite Beds, as in the Gorlice fold, evidence for shallow water sedimentation was found. In the profile 9 facies (A-I), both carbonate and fine, coarse and very coarse clastic with variable, structural and textual features were distinguished and their genesis was interpreted. A characteristic feature of this profile is the presence of dominant clastic facies (F and G) which build socalled Magdalena Sandstones. These facies constitute almost 90% of the profile thickness. Facies F (thick bedded, massive and coarse grained glauconitic sandstones) is interpreted as deposited in the proximal part of the delta front. Facies G (polymictic conglomerates) is interpreted as a coastal (cliff) deposit. Other H and I facies, respectively heterolithic and fine grained sandstones, occur mainly in the upper part of the profile. Based on the presence of characteristic sedimentary structures, they have been interpreted as sedimentary facies deposited in a coastal environment dominated by tidal processes involving storm processes. Among the sedimentary structures, tidal rhythmites were identified and described for the first time. They were additionally interpreted as a product of neap and spring tides. Genesis of carbonate facies (A, B and C) is not unambiguous, but the presence of small gypsum crystals in the rock may indicate that they were deposited in a shallow, hypersaline sedimentary environment. The described facies and their genesis indicate that the Menilite Beds within the Stróże Thrust Sheet (similar as in the Gorlic Fold) were deposited in the shallow, probably isolated sedimentation basin with periodic connection to the world ocean, which can be indicated by the presence of tidal structures.
