    Ever since sociology emerged as a scientific discipline, its founding fathers have stressed that modernisation will result in secularisation. The belief in the ‘death of God’ as a sine qua non condition for social progress has also been prevalent during the past 100 years and has resulted in the popularity of the secularisation thesis. In contrast this paper argues that religion has not disappeared in the Western World but is being transformed. It is argued that modern medicine reflects the religious heritage of Western culture: its ideology, myths, dogmas, symbols, beliefs, rituals, practices, hopes and fears. Even more, it is a form of secular religion. The analysis is based on functional, phenomenological and cultural approaches toward religion. The paper focuses on three components of the religion of health: 1) its general structure; 2) the morality of health and 3) the Church of medicine.

    U progu XVI wieku pojęcie państwa świeckiego było protestanckim teologom absolutnie obce, a dyskusja dotyczyła stopnia zależności związku wyznaniowego od państwa lub odwrotnie oraz wolności religii. Stosunek protestantyzmu do państwa świeckiego na przestrzeni dziejów nie był ani spójny, ani niezmienny, ale akcentując indywidualizm jednostki przyczyniał się do rozwoju ochrony jej autonomii, a tym samym rozdzielenia państwa i wyznań. Współcześnie Kościoły protestanckie posiadające status państwowego związku wyznaniowego bądź same aktywnie zmierzają w kierunku zrzucenia ostatnich symboli państwa wyznaniowego, co miało miejsce w Królestwie Szwecji, lub też są wewnętrznie poddawane presji, aby zdecydować się na taki krok (np. Kościół Anglii). Koncepcja państwa świeckiego, pozbawionego cech antyreligijnych i współpracującego ze związkami wyznaniowymi w sprawach dobra wspólnego (np. diakonia), jest powszechnie akceptowana w protestantyzmie, także polskim.
    At the beginning the concept of a secular state was absolutely alien for Protestant theologians, and their discussions concerned the degree of dependence of the religious organizations from the state or vice versa, and freedom of religion. The opinions of Protestantism on the secular state throughout history were neither consistent nor immutable, but emphasizing individualism contributed to the development of the protection of individual autonomy, and thus the separation of state and religions. Today, the last Protestant churches having the status of a religious organization actively moving towards dropping the last symbols of a religious state, which took place in the Kingdom of Sweden or are internally subjected to pressure to decide on such a step (eg. The Church of England). The concept of a secular state, devoid of anti-religious features and cooperating with religious organizations in matters of the common good (eg. Diakonia) is widely accepted in Protestantism, including Polish one.

    In recent decades, interesting parallels have been created between sport and religion, which are mediated to humans. Sport, as a partial area of consumerism, is the bearer of spiritual and religious content. Syncretism is typical for the current post‑modern religiosity, how ever, this has gone beyond the merging of religions. Syncretism goes beyond its traditional religious range and combines religion/spiritu ality with the secular area of human life. Among them is sport. The actors mediating amorphous and drifting denominational spiritu ality are both the players themselves and sports commentators and journalists.
    W ostatnich dziesięcioleciach, między sportem a religią powstały inte resujące paralele, przekazywane ludziom. Sport jako obszar w ramach konsumpcji jest nośnikiem treści duchowych i religijnych. W bieżą cej ponowoczesnej religijności typowym zjawiskiem jest synkretyzm, który jednak przekracza obszar tradycyjnej religii i łączy się z religią/ duchowością w świeckich wymiarach ludzkiego życia. Wśród nich ma swoje miejsce i sport. Między aktorami mediującymi amorficzną i dryfującą wyznaniową duchowość są zarówno sami gracze oraz ko mentatorzy sportowi i dziennikarze.

    Opis:
    Estonia is a country which has introduced an optional non-denominational form of religious education in schools. The regulation of this issue is important from the point of view of relations between the Church(es) and the Estonian State. The Constitution of the Republic of Estonia says that there is no established church of Estonia, and guarantees an equal legal status to all churches and religious associations. The Constitution does not mention religious education. The issue has not received in-depth treatment in the legislation, either. Nonetheless, in 2010 a substantial amendment was introduced to the relevant provisions. The curriculum for the subject was unified and currently it serves as a mandatory guideline for all the schools. Estonia is considered as a very secularized country. This is due to the country’s history, which has also determined the attitude of Estonians to religious education. Its role is marginalized in the country’s system of education, though at the same time the issue has raised a number of controversies.
    Estonia jest przykładem państwa, które wprowadziło model niewyznaniowej fakultatywnej formy nauczania religii w szkołach. Uregulowanie tej kwestii ma istotne znaczenie z punktu widzenia relacji państwo – Kościół. Konstytucja Estonii sankcjonuje brak istnienia Kościoła państwowego, a także gwarantuje równy status prawny Kościołom i związkom wyznaniowym. Nauczaniu religii w szkole nie poświęcono uwagi w ustawie zasadniczej. Również w aktach niższego rzędu kwestia ta została potraktowana lakonicznie. W 2010 r. wprowadzono jednak istotną nowelizację obowiązującego prawodawstwa. Ujednolicono program nauczania dla przedmiotu, który odtąd stanowi wytyczne obowiązujące dla wszystkich szkół. Estonia jest uznawana za kraj silnie zlaicyzowany. Wpływ na to miały doświadczenia historyczne, które warunkują stosunek Estończyków wychowania religijnego. Jego rola jest marginalizowana w systemie nauczania, a równocześnie wzbudza liczne kontrowersje.

    The paper deals with actual problem of current stage of religious sphere’s development – the emergence and vigorous activity of movements and organizations that can be characterized as quasi-religious. We research the characteristics of quasi-religions as the separate phenomena that operate mainly in the form of secular organizations and that try to transform the identity of its members in their desired direction. It is emphasized that the concepts of quasi-religious and pseudo-religious beliefs are not identical and require of separate religious studies research. But it can be considered that common to both phenomena is only their arising at the boundaries between sacred and secular. The paper presents a review of quasi-religious concepts – from Tillich to Greil, as well as a description of quasi-religious practices and quasi-religious movements.

    Zgodnie z art. 25 ust. 3 Konstytucji Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej stosunki między państwem a kościołami i innymi związkami wyznaniowymi są kształtowane na zasadach poszanowania ich autonomii oraz wzajemnej niezależności każdego w swoim zakresie. Mając powyższe na uwadze, art. 43 ust. 2 ustawy o ochronie danych osobowych stanowi, że w odniesieniu do zbiorów danych dotyczących osób należących do kościoła lub innego związku wyznaniowego, o uregulowanej sytuacji prawnej, przetwarzanych na potrzeby tego kościoła lub związku wyznaniowego, Generalnemu Inspektorowi Ochrony Danych Osobowych nie przysługują uprawnienia m.in. do przeprowadzania kontroli, wydawania decyzji administracyjnych i rozpatrywania skarg w sprawach wykonania przepisów o ochronie danych osobowych. Ponadto, w świetle regulacji konstytucyjnej kwestia nabycia i utraty przynależności wyznaniowej, w tym ich przesłanek oraz faktycznych i prawnych skutków, jest i musi pozostać wyłączną kompetencją związków wyznaniowych jako ich sprawa wewnętrzna. Państwo świeckie, neutralne w sprawach religii i przekonań, nie jest uprawnione ani do ustanawiania własnej procedury, ani do rozstrzygania na drodze administracyjnej lub sądowej.
    According to the article 25 par. 3 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland the relationship between the State and Churches and other religious organizations shall be based on the principle of respect for their autonomy and the mutual independence of each in its own sphere. Considering the above, article 43 par. 2 of the Act on Personal Data Protection provides that the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection does not have the authority, inter alia, to conduct the inspection, to issue administrative decisions and to review complaints in cases involving enforcement of the personal data protection legislation with respect to the filing systems of data concerning members of a church or another religious organization with a legal status, processed for the purposes of that church or religious organization. Moreover it is in the light of the constitutional regulation that the manner of obtainment and loss of religious affiliation, including their conditions and factual and legal implications, is and should remain the exclusive competence of the religious organizations as their internal matter. The secular state, neutral in matters of religion and belief, is entitled neither to establishing its own procedure nor to administrative and judicial enforcement.

    Modern communities in their spiritual and religious search often tend to forsake the values presented by traditional Churches, choosing other, proposed by diverse religious and secular sources. Today’s philosophical conceptual grid is open for the changes geared inter alia to blurring the boundaries between what is private and what is public, everyday and festive, aesthetic and unaesthetic. Modern culture changes cause humans to see life as the most important value – it’s fullness and the ways of living it. That recognition of life’s absolute value has come to be on the way of overcoming the religion. One’s decisions about life’s shape are made due to increasing amount of factors, and man alone can “construct himself” from many different elements available on the idea market with values are attractive to him, having freedom of choice, belief and lifestyle.

    Francja jest obecnie jedynym państwem europejskim, którego Konstytucja wprost stanowi o „laickim” charakterze Republiki. Z obrazem Francji jako państwa, w którym przyjęto model absolutnego rozdziału państwa od kościoła z pewnością nie współgra sposób, w jaki unormowane są relacje między władzą publiczną a religią w departamentach: Górny Ren, Dolny Ren i Mozela, w których do dziś obowiązują przepisy mające swoje źródło w konkordacie z 1801 r. i w ustawach organicznych z 1802 r. W Alzacji władza oficjalnie uznaje 4 wyznania, przyznając im nawet pewne przywileje. Wiedza o religiach jest nauczana w szkołach publicznych, Wydział Teologii Uniwersytetu w Strasburgu wydaje dyplomy uznawane przez państwo, a duchowni otrzymują swoje wynagrodzenie z kasy państwowej. Należy więc podjąć refleksję, czy obowiązywanie odrębnego reżimu konkordatowego w trzech wschodnich departamentach jest możliwe do pogodzenia z konstytucyjnymi zasadami równości wobec prawa oraz z zasadą państwa świeckiego. Aż do 2010 r. kwestia ta nie mogła być zbadana przez sąd konstytucyjny (z uwagi na niewystępowanie do tego czasu we francuskim porządku prawnym następczej kontroli konstytucyjności prawa). Niestety wydanie odpowiednich orzeczeń w tym zakresie przez Radę Konstytucyjną nie wyjaśniło podnoszonych wątpliwości, a jedynie je pogłębiło.
    France is the only European country in which the Constitution explicitly underlines the rule of the secular state. It is then difficult to understand why in 3 French departments (i.e. Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, Moselle) the relations between state and churches are regulated in the law which introduces into force the stipulations of Napoleon’s Concordat from 1801. In these departments the state officially recognizes 4 confessions and even grants them some privileges. In Alsace religious science is taught in public schools, Faculty of Theology of the University of Strasbourg issues diplomas recognized by the state and remuneration of priests is paid from state’s budget. Thus, it is should be determined, whether the existence of the specific „concordat regime” in 3 eastern departments is reconcilable with the constitutional rules such as: equality before the law and the rule of secular state. Until 2010 this problem could not have been examined by French constitutional court (because of the lack of the a posteriori control of the constitutionality of the law in French legal system at that time). Unfortunately, it must be stated, that the decisions of the Constitutional Council that were made after 2010 did not convincingly clarify doubts concerning the constitutionality of the model of church-state relations in 3 French eastern departments.

    In this article devoted to the relationship between the authority and the Russian Orthodox Church on the canvas of history. The author demonstrates the influence of historical experiences and the role of the Russian Orthodox Church on the current model of relations between secular and spiritual authority. An important part of the work is the assessment of the opportunities and threats stemming from the subordination of the Russian Orthodox Church to the current elites.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest analizą stosunków pomiędzy władzą a Cerkwią w Rosji w ujęciu historycznym. Autorka podjęła próbę wykazania wpływ doświadczeń historycznych i roli Rosyjskiego Kościoła Prawosławnego na współczesny model relacji pomiędzy władzą świecką a duchową w Federacji Rosyjskiej. Ważną część rozważań stanowi ocena szans i zagrożeń wynikających z podporządkowania Rosyjskiego Kościoła Prawosławnego obecnym elitom władzy.

    W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę określenia kategorii wyjątku w dyskursie na temat wolności wyrażania przekonań przez mniejszości religijne, a także nazwanie grup wyznaniowych jako dominujące i niedominujące. Warto zauważyć, że rzecznik praw obywatelskich Gruzji kilkakrotnie wymienia słowo „wyjątek” w swoim raporcie z 2020 r. Zakładanie czegoś jako wyjątku nie oznacza tylko, że jedna grupa otrzymuje przywilej nad inną i naruszona jest zasada równości. Dokonanie wyjątku od ograniczeń nałożonych przez pandemię w ogóle, w szczególności oznacza stworzenie sytuacji, w której rząd wykracza poza porządek prawny zagrażając suwerenności prawa. Z drugiej strony nie ulega wątpliwości, że nawet w stanie sanitarno-epidemiologicznym praworządność powinna być przestrzegana i trzeba jej chronić.
    This article presents an attempt to focus on the category of exception in the discourse on freedom of expression of religious minorities in addition to naming religious groups as dominant and non-dominant ones. It is noteworthy that the ombudsman of Georgia mentions the word “exception” several times in her 2020 report. Assuming something as an exception does not only mean that one group is given a privilege over another one and the principle of equality is violated. Making an exception to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic in general and in particular means creating a situation in which the government goes beyond the legal order endangering the sovereignty of law. On the other hand, it is without a doubt that even in a sanitary-epidemiological state, the rule of law must act and it is necessary to protect it.

    Today, western liberal democratic societies are secular, or in other words, religion is set apart from the state. However, the beginning of the 21st century has seen a re-politicizing of the religion. This paper argues that religion plays an important role in current global politics and events. Moreover, it has been used as tool to recruit masses for a wrong cause. Hence, Interreligious and interfaith dialog can play a role of catalysts and a future trend in cultural diplomacy. The paper provides definitions of a secular and post secular society. Then, it discusses the general concept of dialogue and explores it from an interreligious and interfaith point of view as a way to mitigate the role religion has undertaken. Finally, it provides examples of what European Union has been doing in that respect.

    Źródła sekularności. Analiza wybranych aspektów sekularyzacji

    Sekularność jest historycznym produktem nowożytności, który wskazuje na malejącą rolę transcendencji w życiu publicznym i prywatnym oraz zmienia rozumienie natury kluczowych instytucji społecznych: ekonomii, państwa, wiedzy, rodziny, religii. Może przybierać formy neutralnego braku transcendencji (sekularyzacja), może też funkcjonować jak aktywna ideologiczna obecność – ambitny program usuwania wszelkich odniesień do transcendencji w życiu publicznym i prywatnym (sekularyzm). W pierwszym przypadku sekularność  pojawia się jako wynik cywilizacyjnego procesu usuwania, w którym religia znika pod naciskiem nowożytnej technologii, ekspertyzy, ekonomii, nowożytnych orientacji filozoficznych i form ustrojowych. W drugim przybiera postać ofensywnej ideologii, która zakłada konkretny program działań przeciwko religii. Sekularność powstała jako następstwo zmian kulturowych, politycznych i filozoficznych mających na celu wyzwolenie jednostek spod podporządkowania staremu systemowi moralnemu i uczynieniu z nich niezależnych autonomicznych podmiotów żyjących w bezprecedensowych warunkach novus ordo seculorum oraz zwykłego sekularnego czasu.
    Secularity is a historical product of modern ages that signaled a diminishing role of transcendence in public as well as individual life, changing effectively the common understanding of key social institutions: economy, state, knowledge, the family, religion. It may take on the form of a neutral lack of transcendence in public life and personal orientation (secularization); it can also appear as an active ideological presence – an ambitious project to remove any reference to transcendence from public life in view of creating “a religion free zone” (secularism). In the first case secularity comes about as a result of a civilization process of subtraction, in which religion melts under the pressure of modern technology, science, economy, a new philosophical orientation, and political frameworks. In the second one, it assumes the form of a bellicose ideology which implies a specific agenda of actions against religion. Secularity came into being as an outcome of philosophical, cultural and political shifts that strived to free individuals from being subjects of the old moral order, and make them independent autonomous agents that live in the unprecedented conditions of novus ordo seculorum and secular, ordinary time.
    Die Säkularität ist ein historisches Produkt der Neuzeit, die auf die verminderte Bedeutung der Transzendenz im öffentlichen und privaten Leben verweist und das veränderte Verständnis der Natur von den wichtigsten gesellschaftlichen Institutionen, wie: Ökonomie, Staat, Wissenschaft, Familie, Religion zur Folge hat. Die Säkularität kann eine Form von einem neutralen Mangel der Transzendenz (Säkularisierung) annehmen, kann aber auch als eine aktive ideologische Präsenz funktionieren - als ein ehrgeiziges Programm der Eliminierung aller Verweise auf die Transzendenz aus dem öffentlichen und privaten Leben (Säkularismus). Im ersten Fall erscheint die Säkularität als eine Folge des zivilisatorischen Verdrängungsprozesses, in Folge dessen die Religion unter dem Druck der neuzeitlichen Technologie, Expertise, Ökonomie sowie der neuen philosophischen Ideen und Verfassungsformen verschwindet. Im zweiten Fall wird die Säkularität zu einer offensiven Ideologie, die ein konkretes, gegen die Religion gerichtetes Aktionsprogramm voraussetzt. Die Säkularität entstand als Folge der kulturellen, politischen und philosophischen Veränderungen, deren Ziel es war, den Einzelnen aus der Abhängigkeit vom alten Moralsystem zu befreien und ihn zum unabhängigen und autonomen Subjekt zu etablieren, das in den einzigartigen Verhältnissen des novus ordo seculorum sowie der einfachen säkularen Zeit leben kann.
