Opis:
The utility of phytocenotic indices in the diagnosis and classification of forest sites might be limited because of vegetation degeneration in managed forests. However, even in secondary communities it may be possible to determine indicator species, although these may differ from typical and well known plant indicators. The aim of this work was to assess the vegetation diversity of Scots pine stands in representative forest site types along a moisture and fertility gradient. In total 120 sample plots from Turawa forests were included in the study. These plots represented young (21–40 years) and old (> 80 years) Scots-pine-dominated stands. The forest sites were categorized according to Polish site classification. Four site categories were studied: Boew (very nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMoew (nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMw (nutrient-poor and moist sites), LMw (quite nutrient-rich and moist sites). The species composition of the forest patches studied hardly differed among forest site types. Almost all of the vegetation in site Boew was different from both moist site types (BMw and LMw). Sites Boew andLMwhad the exclusive species determined as site indicators. Moreover, young stands had their own site type indicator species which differed from old stands. Numerical classification showed that only two plant communities were widespread: Leucobryo-Pinetum in Boew and BMoew, and the community of Pinus sylvestris and Molinia caerulea in BMoew, BMw, LMw. In secondary communities typical indicator species may not be useful, but it is possible to determinate species that are locally unique to forest site type. Despite the convergence in the composition of the plant community resulting from tree stand unification, plant communities have the capacity for a more diverse composition. Tree stand conversion can increase phytocenotic diversity.

Opis:
In 2011–2014, the occupancy of nest-boxes by secondary hole-nesting birds and their breeding success was investigated in pine stands of the Augustów Forest (North-Eastern Poland). In the studied area of 12600 ha, the share of Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris L. in the stands was 92%. On average, birds occupied 54% and bats 3% of the 224–317 nest boxes controlled yearly. Nest boxes were also used by the Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum L. as food caches. In total, broods of nine secondary hole-nesting species were observed, but only four bird species nested in each year of study. The most numerous species, occupying 53–60% of all boxes each year was the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca Pall. The Great Tit Parus major L. occupied 15–24% and the Coal Tit Periparus ater L. 10–12% of available nest-boxes, while the Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus L. used 2–7% of nest boxes. The yearly breeding success was highest for tits (Great Tit – 52–84%, Coal Tit – 50–72%) and strongly variable for the Pied Flycatchers – 38–78%. Broods were lost due to predation by martens Martes sp. (38%) and great spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos major L. (6%) as well as nest competition (2%). The nest-boxes were occupied at a constant rate during the following four years after their exposition. Over 67% of the new nest-boxes were occupied annually which means new nest-boxes (up to 4 years) were occupied significantly more often than boxes older than 4 years.

Opis:
Z większą ilościowością występuje tu Carex panicea L. i Carex buxbaumii Wahlenb.
The study was carried out in the year 2010 in the Middle Basin of the Biebrza River in the Biebrza National Park. The aim was to find out if the cessation of mowing could have changed some parameters of the existing vegetation. And if yes - what kind of changes could be noted. The examined phytocoenoses were described by 23 relevčs made with the BRAUN-BLANQUET method (1964). Eleven of them were made within the transect where vegetation had been mowed every 2-4 years, and the other 12 - in the transect, where vegetation had not been mowed for the previous 7 years. Species diversity was assessed upon: species composition of each community, their syntaxonomic structure, species richness, floristic diversity calculated using the SHANNON-WIENER index (H') and site conditions estimated with the ELLENBERG phytoindication method (1992]. The utilization value based on the fodder value score (FVS) defined by FILIPEK (1973) and sod cover were also estimated. It was found that species composition in both transects was very similar, however, the proportion of some species and syntaxonomic groups of species was different. Generally, the whole examined area was covered by the phytocoenoses of Molinetum caerulae association. In the not mowed part the clear symptoms of secondary succession were noticed. Young trees and shrubs, mainly Salix cinerea, Salix repens subspec. rosmarinifolia and Betula pubescens, appeared in vegetation units. In comparison to the mowed area the total number of species in the phytosociological relevé and mean height of plants were higher, whereas the sod cover was lower. In the mowed area the mean cover of trees and shrubs was negligible. Carex panicea and Carex buxbaumii were numerous there. Other results of the abandonment of utilization were: a higher species richness and a lower value of Shannon-Wiener index. The utilisation value of vegetation in both examined transects was very poor.

Opis:
Airborne Laser Scanning; ALS).
Dynamic economic and social changes taking place for the past 20 years in Poland, effects often of such loss of extensive agriculture and abandonment of agricultural activities particularly on small and narrow plots, usually on the soils of poor grading. Even before the Polish accession to the EU, set-aside and fallow areas cover approx. 2.3 million ha (in 2002), but in subsequent years the area drastically decreased from 1.3 million ha (in 2004), by 1.0 million ha (2005) to 0.4 million hectares (2011). As a result of cessation of mowing meadows, grazing pastures and agricultural measures, we can observed the phenomenon of secondary forest succession (plant communities of a forest properties) leading to changes in land use and land cover classes structure. Recording changes in the agro-forestry space, update reference registers of the land and building (EGiB) and control granted to farmers subsidies (direct EU payments) requires an efficient and automated technology acquisition, processing and analysis of spatial data. In addition to the used by ARiMR (in the LPIS system) vector data and aerial orthophotomaps, there is still a need to strengthen the decision-making process such as update of current ranges of land-use classes. One of the GI technologies that could be a real breakthrough is the Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS). The study area cover 137.17 ha in the village Tuklęcz (commune Rytwiany, Staszów County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship). The EGiB geodata came from PODGiK in Staszów. They were two ALS point cloud data sets: one provided by the RZGW in Krakow (from airborne campaign Nov. 2009; density ~2 pts/m2) and the second from ISOK project (Nov. 2012; density ~4 pts/m2). The Terrasolid and FUSION (USDA Forest Service) and ArcGIS Esri software were used in the study. Detection of vegetation was carried out in 4 variants differ in the “height above ground” of the class "succession" (thresholds: from 0.4m, 1m, 2m and 3m). The results indicate that in each scenario (variant), in the area of arable land ("R")- class (covering 60.55% of the analyzed area) were over 70% of all detected secondary forest succession polygons, covering more than 50% of agricultural land. Secondary succession occupied from 31.38% to 61.05% the land-use "R" and from 34.93% to 67.03% of the land-use Pastures’ ("Ps"), which shows the high economic transformations taking place in the area. The use of wide-scale ALS data in Poland, has been made possible by the ISOK project assuming execution to the end of 2013 for an area of about 191.000 km2 of classified ALS point cloud (cloud density: 4 pts/m2 – Standard I for agricultural areas; 12 pts/m2 - Standard II for urban areas), digital terrain model (DTM) and the digitals (topographic) surface model (DSM). In addition, the aerial photographs are obtained in the ISOK project for coloring of ALS point clouds or for orthophoto generation purpose. Observed in the years 2002 -2010 decrease by 26% the number of farms in Poland (up to 1 ha area) is some indication that the problem of abandonment of agricultural land has not yet been closed. Regular ALS campaigns or the use of alternative technologies such as stereo-matching of aerial photographs or radar technologies, it gives a good chance to manage and monitor the changes in rural areas. This retrieved data can be used in the construction of development plans of communes or management plans of Natura2000, which largely depend on properly conducted agricultural economy (Special Protection Areas - SPA) means eg mowing overgrown meadows and pastures. On the other hand, since 1995, the National Afforestation Programme (KPZL) exist, which implies achieving 30% forest cover in Poland in year 2020 and 33% in year 2050.

Studies on the soil seed banks of fallow lands of different ages were carried out on poor soil abandoned fields and in a fresh coniferous forest in north-eastern Poland. The size and diversity of seed banks was studied with the seedling emergence method. Species abundance (i), density (ii), number of species from different biological groups (iii) and distribution and mean LI value (iv) were analysed as the function of fallow land age. It was found that: (i) species diversity, number of species and ln of density are linear declining function of the fallow land age; (ii) for approx. 25 years the share of diaspores of identified species groups has been relatively similar. Seed banks of 40-50-year-old fallow lands are dominated by Calluna vulgaris, while the seed bank of the old fresh coniferous forest is dominated by dicotyledonous perennials and grasses; (iii) within the first 50 years of succession the persistence of seed banks measured by the Longevity Index increases gradually.

Characteristic features of European woodland include both a reduction in natural forest areas and an increase in former agricultural areas occupied by secondary woodland. The management of these areas is challenging in terms of nature conservation, agricultural and forestry management and policy. The aim of our study was to reconstruct the history and to document the current tree stand structure for a secondary oak-beech woodland in Hungary. Towards the end of the 1800s, this area which was once almost completely occupied by a continuous forest, had been transformed into a wood-pasture. As a result of its gradual abandonment, the closed forest stand of the pasture increased from 10 to 52% between 1963 and 2005. The most characteristic feature of this woodland is the abundance of large trees. Globally, the number of large and ancient trees is rapidly diminishing. Therefore preserving and maintaining such areas, where large trees could live, is an essential management task.

Opis:
Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and their symbiotic associations with forest trees are among major drivers of key ecosystem functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant nutrient and water uptake from soil, plant-plant facilitation/competition and diversity regulation via common mycorrhizal networks. Through their functional traits and interactions with both abiotic and biotic environment, they also significantly affect the process of open land colonization by trees as well as vegetation succession coupled with soil and ecosystem development. Here we review the role of ECM fungi in the early primary and secondary succession following major anthropogenic disturbances. Based on the examples of mine spoils and post-agricultural lands, we demonstrate key ecosystem services provided by ECM fungi in the processes of forest restoration. We point out ecological mechanisms and adaptations which underpin ECM fungal community successional interactions, particularly life histories, dispersal, spatial structure, host preferences, and sensitivity to environmental filters. We emphasize the need of better understanding the role of ECM fungi in the forest restoration practice as it seems crucial for afforestation success and biodiversity rehabilitation. Thus, ectomycorrhizal traits should be a prime consideration in afforestation and carbon sequestration polices, sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation practices.

The carbon and nitrogen return patterns increased in the dry period (October– April) and decreased in the wet period (May–September). Carbon and nitrogen loss in the decomposing litter continually decreased during the decomposition process from the initial levels, with a final relatively rapid release in the wet period. Results from this study was understanding of community composition, litterfall production and litter decomposition for understanding potential of secondary mixed deciduous forest for balancing carbon for mitigating greenhouse gas effect in the local area.

Opis:
The research concerned the evaluation of the soil seed bank and herb layer diversity in the 60−year old secondary oak forest growing in the Kozubowski Landscape Park (Nida Basin, southern Poland). The aim of the studies was to determine the diversity, similarity and species structure of herb layer and soil seed bank within plots situated at different distances from the forest edge as well as to discuss the obtained data with the results of analogous research which were conducted in the natural oak forest in Białowieża (north−eastern Poland). 12 plots 20×20 m were situated in three zones from edge to the centre of the forest (P, S and L; fig. 1). A total of 134 species of vascular plants were recorded in the analysed herb layer (4800 m2). It was found that in the plots closest to the forest edge, both the Shannon’s diversity index and the average density of the herb layer species were significantly higher than on these located deeper in forest (fig. 2, 3). The soil seed bank contained a total of 2820 seeds belonging to 45 species. The density of the seed bank ranged from 1406/m2 (P) to 1061/m2 and 1057/m2 (S and L, respectively). The seed bank species richness showed a constant decrease from zone P to L (fig. 4). The Sörensen species similarity coefficient between the herb layer and the seed bank for the entire forest was 0.43. Although nearly 90% of the seeds of the whole bank belonged to the species present in the herb layer, the species structure of the above ground vegetation was clearly different from that recorded in the bank. It was found that over 66% of all seeds in the bank belonged to Poa nemoralis. A comparative analysis of the studied oak forest and natural oak forest of Białowieża showed: a similar number of forest species in herb layer per 100 m2, similarly high proportion of ancient forest species in the herb layer, much lower species richness of the seed bank as well as its density in the secondary forest. Our results also point to several times lower values of H’ Shannon−Wiener’s biodiversity index, both in the herb layer and the seed bank in comparison to the undisturbed Białowieża oak forest.

Opis:
Fires that are one of the most classic disturbance of plant communities have had a great impact on the development of Scots pine communities. Restoration of vegetation disturbed by fire in this type of community starts almost immediately after disturbance. The intensity of fire significantly influences the future composition of vascular plant species and also the rate of change. The aim of the study was to describe the effect of intensity of the surface fire on the forest floor vegetation response and to preliminary attempt to characterize the syndynamic processes occurring after the disturbance. The research was conducted in Scots pine forest Peucedano−Pinetum in the Kampinoski National Park (central Poland). We established 45 permanent study plots, including 17 not burnt (control) and 28 burnt ones. Each plot covered area of 100 m². On each plot at first we separated the areas which were not burnt, surface burnt and characterized by complete burnout of the organic horizon of the soil. Than we measured the thickness of this horizon. Additionally the volume of organic matter burnt within each plot was calculated. Vegetation was sampled using Londo scale in the year of fire (2015) and the year after (2016). We used DCA ordination and UPGMA classification methods. Recorded species were divided into forest and non−forest groups and additionally for trees and shrubs, and the others, containing dwarf shrub, herb, bryophyte and lichen species. The linear regression method was used to estimate the relationship between measured parameters, vegetation change and changes in the species richness of distinguished groups. Two processes of vegetation reaction were observed. The first was classified as regeneration and occurred within surface burnt plots. Its characteristic feature included the higher increase in forest species richness than in case of non−forest species. The other process was defined as secondary succession alike. It occurred on plots with highest burnout of soil organic matter horizon. The increase of richness of non−forest species predominated within it. The change between two processes is smooth and depends on the participation of area with complete burnout of soil organic horizon within plot. The results show, that more than one process of recovery of community can occur in the same site and it depends especially on the proportion of soil organic horizon area burnout.

Opis:
Agents causing damage to plant organisms like drought, folivore feeding, fungal pathogens, ground frosts have no significant effect on tree mortality if they occur individually, however their concurrent occurrence may lead to mass dieback of trees on a local scale. Changes in cell biochemistry of trees under the impact of stress factors enable development of fungal infections or facilitate insect attacks. This study presents examples of interactions between physiological changes (e.g. in production of enzymes, phenolic compounds, etc.) determining host plant resistance and pathogen or pest responses to these changes.

Opis:
In July, 1992, fire swept through the Jelonka Reserve (52o35'33"N; 23o22'10"E). Litter, herbs layer and juniper shrubs were razed and the tree trunks of Pinus sylvestris and Populus tremula damaged, which resulted in their death the following year. Five research plots of 25 m2 each were established in the post-fire area. The species present there and their degrees of coverage were listed on the Londo scale between 1993 and 2002. The calculation of average degrees of coverage for individual populations allowed for the establishing of a chronological pattern of post-fire succession. The following findings have been made: 1) the primary function in colonization belongs to species of guerilla strategy of growth whose dormant buds survived fire underground (Holcus mollis, Calluna vulgaris and Populus tremula) or phalanx strategy of growth (Corynephoms canescens); 2) the dominants of the initial succession stage are perennial grasses, not therophytes; 3) the spatial pattern of succession is influenced by the occurrence of H. mollis or C. canescens in a particular location; 4) the initial stage terminates with the occurrence and further growth of C. vulgaris clumps; the post-fire succession in the Jelonka Reserve attained a brushwood stage faster in comparison to secondary succession, formerly triggered by the cessation of cultivation on arable land.
