Opis:
Ixodes ricinus (castor bean tick) is a ruthless parasite with the greatest medical and veterinary significance out of all the ticks found in the Polish fauna. The research on the incidence and spread of this species was conducted in six selected research areas in the urban area of Bielsko-Biała and in the rural areas of Ujsoły and Złatna. Another variable covered by the research was the seasonal activity of I. ricinus in three selected research areas in Ujsoły. The researched locations include recreational areas near rivers, forests, and hiking trails. They are frequented by tourists and cyclists. In studies faunal a total of 60 tick specimens belonged to the I. ricinus and were collected with the flagging method. The ticks were stored in test tubes filled with 96% ethanol. The analysis focused on the parasite’s taxonomic position and developmental stages. During the observation of the seasonal tick activity, the parasites were placed in dry tubes. Once their taxonomic position and developmental stages were diagnosed, they were released into the wild (a total of 875 ticks were collected belonged to the I. ricinus). The observations and studies indicate the widespread and increasingly high incidence of this dangerous parasite, which means there is a high risk of tick-borne diseases in both urban and mountain areas of the Żywiec and Silesian Beskids.

Opis:
Common European ticks, Ixodes ricinus, have been found in forest areas situated within the boundaries of big cities, and in areas changed by anthropogenic pressure. Monitoring I. ricinus, in the areas used by the public for recreation and leisure, makes it possible to assess the risk of infection with the diseases they transmit. The objective of this study was the comparison of the seasonal activity of ticks, I. ricinus, in the afforested areas of the city of Olsztyn and its surroundings. Material and methods. This survey was conducted at sites located in the afforested areas of Olsztyn and within the Warmiński Forest situated about 15 km from Olsztyn. Ticks, I. ricinus, were caught every 10-14 days from April to October 2001 by the commonly applied method of flagging. During each catch, the temperature (T) and relative humidity (%RH) was measured with a thermohygrometer, 1 m above the duff level. Results. The tick population density at the Warmiński Forest site was higher than that at the sites within the city limits (116.8 and 20.5 ticks per 100 m², respectively). Two peaks of tick activity were recorded in this area - the spring peak in June and the autumn peak (much lower) in September. The activity of ticks in the afforested area within the city limits was much lower - only one (spring) peak occurred, which at most sites was observed in June. At all sites, included in the study, the peak activity of ticks was observed in April. Conclusion. The study suggests that the afforested areas outside the city are more dangerous to people than the area within the city because of the large number of ticks there.

Opis:
Investigations into the abundance of adult D. reticulatus in relation to the effect of climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) on host-seeking behaviour were conducted during the autumn (September-October) and spring (May) activity peaks in 2008–2009 in eastern Poland (51°25’N). The study was conducted in the same habitat where similar examinations were performed in 1999–2000. A comparative analysis revealed that the abundance of D. reticulatus had almost doubled within 10 years. Analysis of data on the humidity and temperature conditions prevailing during tick collection, and on tick abundance in the respective study periods in 1999–2000 and 2008–2009, as well as absence of climatic changes over many years, indicate that the increase in the numbers of ticks may have been a result of a multitude of other factors, e.g. weather or environmental conditions favourable for ticks and their hosts. The substantial differences in D. reticulatus abundance observed during the autumn activity peak (an increase from 126 and 128.6 specimens per collection in 1999 and 2000, respectively, to 247.3 in 2008) demonstrate the considerable effect of the biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing during the development of young and adult stages on the abundance of this tick species. The activity of adult D. reticulatus ticks in the autumn was 2.7-fold higher in comparison to that observed during the spring collection; the difference was statistically significant (p<0.0001). Females dominated in both seasonal activity peaks. The ratio between females and males during the spring and autumn peaks was 3.31:1 and 1.05:1, respectively. The increase in the abundance of the D. reticulatus population implies a higher risk of transmission of tick-borne diseases in the study area, and the necessity to develop and implement effective prevention methods and tick control programmes.

Opis:
Between 2009 and 2011, behaviour of 15 field roe deer living in agricultural landscape in western Poland was studied using the radio telemetry method. Observed animals were active during the entire day with two distinct peaks – at the dawn and at the dusk. Moreover, night activity was greater than the day one. Such activity pattern may result from frequent human presence in the field roe deer habitat. Throughout the year, the activity rate (locations of active roe deer/all locations ratio) was higher in the agricultural lands than in clumps and belts of trees, which the most likely was the consequence of availability of easily digestible food in the crop fields (during growing season as well as after its end). Furthermore, field roe deer activity in open farmlands was the subject to bigger changes – both during warm months and in the winter it was the highest during the lowest temperature. Such changes were not observed in mid−field places with trees. However, in such places the activity rate was higher during periods of snow cover than during snowless ones.
