Opis:
A section over 20 m thick of the basal Middle Miocene succession exposed at Lipowiec (Roztocze, SE Poland) was studied for palynology. Thirteen samples were collected from quartz and glauconitic-quartz sands and thin clay layers. Sand samples were barren but clay samples yielded dinoflagellate cysts. Their assemblages consist of reworked Paleogene specimens dominated by the Homotryblium floripes complex (H. floripes and morphologically similar H. plectilum and H. vallum). The presence of reworked Paleogene specimens indicates intense erosion of marine Paleogene strata during initial stages of the Middle Miocene transgression at Roztocze. Analysis of stratigraphical ranges of reworked dinoflagellate cysts and comparison with their occurrences in known epicontinental Paleogene sites of SE Poland suggest an Upper Eocene age of the washed-out strata. The taxonomic composition of the assemblages described suggests that the Upper Eocene deposits accumulated in a near-shore, lagoonal embayment characterized presumably by oligotrophic waters of slightly increased salinity. A high proportion of the Homotryblium floripes complex is also characteristic of reworked assemblages found in younger Miocene strata of neighbouring exposures in Roztocze, which indicates widespread Eocene lagoonal environments in this part of Roztocze. Coeval Eocene strata from the eastern part of Roztocze and from the Carpathian Foredeep show different taxonomic compositions suggesting varied sedimentary settings during Eocene transgression in this region. These differences reflect variable amounts of freshwater influence resulting in a range of environments that ranged from oligotrophic to brackish.

The TL and OSL ages obtained from two ancient kilns and gothic to baroque bricks in the SE of Poland, were compared to their presumed historical ages and discussed. The luminescence ages of ancient kilns were also matched with the results of archaeomagnetic dating. The OSL and archaeomagnetic data indicates that the ancient kilns were last used not later than ca. 280 AD. This age corresponds well to the lower limit of the postulated age of fragments of Roman type storage vessels found in the filling of kilns. The OSL data used alone can point even to the end of the phase B2 of Roman influence in Poland. The TL ages obtained from the kilns (5297 ± 256 BC, 7092 ± 423 BC) are significantly older. These bottom parts of kilns, from which samples were taken, most probably were heated to a relatively low temperature, insufficient to reset the TL signal. Most of TL ages obtained from gothic to baroque bricks do not correlate with their historical ages. Unknown and most probably varied brick moisture contents in sampled ground floor walls and cellars does not allow to precisely date these bricks using the TL signal.

This paper contains palynological and stratigraphical characteristics of the selected Cambrian sections encountered in the basement of the north-eastern part of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Outer Carpathian margin in south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, as well as verification of the stratigraphical position of rocks recognised so far in several sections in western Ukraine. The acritarch assemblages of the Cambrian System Series 2 are dominated by species of the characteristic early Cambrian genus Skiagia. The Cambrian Series 3 beds are documented by the assemblages with numerous specimens of the Adara alea, Cristallinium cambriense, Heliosphaeridium notatum, Eliasum llaniscum, Multiplicisphaeridium martae, and Comasphaeridium longispinosum. Furongian sediments are evidenced by strongly taxonomically diversified assemblages with large quantities of acritarchs, containing genera Timofeevia, Vulcanisphaera, Ninadiacrodium, Pirea, Leiofusa, Lusatia, or Polygonium, as well as taxa characterized by diacrodial symmetry. These assemblages are dominated by such genera, as: Dasydiacrodium or Acanthodiacrodium, and also by specimens with large polar opening of the central body, belonging to acritarchs of the “galeate” group. Within the studied Cambrian sediments, nine acritarch assemblages of differing composition were distinguished. These assemblages were correlated with faunistic zones. Ages younger than Palaeozoic, identified in some of the analysed Ukrainian sections, were determined basing on very well preserved assemblages of spores and pollen.

Opis:
Miocene strata of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin in Poland contain reworked Eocene and Oligocene dinoflagellate cysts, which come from two sources: the Flysch Carpathians and the epicontinental basin. The occurrence of the latter is almost the only trace of the epicontinental Eocene–Oligocene sedimentary cover, which extended across southwestern Poland, and is today nearly completely eroded. The distribution of epicontinental Eocene and Oligocene taxa in the Miocene strata of the northeastern part of the Carpathian Foredeep is uneven, clearly pointing to a limited extent of the host deposits and their variable erosion intensity. Erosion of the Eocene and Oligocene platform cover took place prior the Miocene transgression and took place also during the Badenian; its intensity increased during Late Badenian–Sarmatian tectonic movements, resulting in an increased frequency of reworked specimens in strata postdating the mid-Badenian deposits.

Opis:
The Sołokija Graben is a tectonic structure in Roztocze, the south-eastern Poland, unique by its infill with the Eocene marine strata. The over 40 metres thick sandy succession is the only well-dated palaeontologically trace of Eocene marine transgression at Roztocze being virtually the only remains of the Eocene epicontinental sea in this part of Poland: the surrounding area is devoid of coeval marine strata, which were eroded. This makes the Sołokija Graben succession crucial for the palaeogeography reconstruction of the south-eastern Poland during Eocene as well as the tectonic history of this region. For its precise age determination, the over 30-m-thick succession of loamy sands that fill the Sołokija Graben in a borehole at Leliszka and a 4-m-thick one at Łaszczówka were sampled for dinoflagellate cysts. Samples from Łaszczówka are barren, whereas the ones from Leliszka contain rich and taxonomically diverse assemblages. Their biostratigraphical interpretation confirms previous results suggesting the Bartonian age of the most of the Sołokija Graben succession; the postulated Priabonian age of its non-calcareous part was documented in its uppermost part only. Palynological record allows reconstruction of sedimentary setting of the Leliszka succession. Basal part of the Bartonian was deposited in a shallow but relatively vast marine basin characterized by normal salinity and high energetic hydrodynamic conditions. Subsequently, marine basin underwent gradual shallowing and temporal cease of sedimentation. During the late Bartonian basin became brackish. A short-lasting early Priabonian marine basin was characterized by shallow marine conditions; it became brackish during its final stage. Comparison with neighbouring Eocene deposits of the epicontinental and Carpathian basins shows that the marine basin at Roztocze was presumably connected with both during Bartonian, and separated from the Carpathian one during early Priabonian. Factors controlling seaways pattern of the Roztocze basin were either eustatics and substratum tectonic movements, the former dominating during Bartonian, and interfingering with uplift of the Meta-Carpathian Swell during early Priabonian.

The aim of this paper is to present a characteristic of loess permanent gullies, which form the branched erosion system, with the total length of almost 7.8 km, dissecting an erosion-denudation dry valley. Only 20%of the gully system catchment is cultivated as the result of steep slopes and considerable height differences up to 100 m. 80%of the catchment is covered by fir coniferous forest and Carpathian beech forest, and gully development is the result of intensive forest exploitation. Five types of gullies have been selected on the basis of the runoff directions, which are determined by the following: original relief, runoff concentration from fields, runoff concentration from fallplaces, skidding and course of forest roads used to carry a timber.

Opis:
The litology of the Sandomierz section deposits have been examined, with SEM analysis performed on 4 quartz grain-size classes. All of the Sandomierz deposits contain predominant quartz grains with signs of aeolian transport. This refers both to morainic till and muds underlying the loess section as well to loesses them selves along with soil complexes. A much smaller, although significant contribution comprises redeposited grains with features of a high energy beach environment. Their content in creases up section. During sedimentation of the LMg (younger upper loess) deposits (later part of the Vistulian Glaciation) wind strength was in creasing. This is indicated by the upwards increasing content of coarser fractions within the interval, with simultaneously improved sorting, as well as by the increased contribution of garnets and the greater content of zircon and rutile at the top. The increasing contribution of aeolian quartz grains, the considerable content of grains redeposited from a beach environment and the decreasing amount of post-sedimentary features all suggest increased wind speed. Low variability in the shape of the 1–0.5 mm quartz grains from the LMg horizon indicates short transport and a similar nearby source of material. Alimentary areas for this horizon were composed of young Pleistocene muds and tills. A change in depositional conditions is observed at the LMs/LMg boundary (upper part of the Vistulian Glaciation). During deposition of the LMs (younger middle loess) horizon, wind strength decreased, as shown by the content of heavy minerals and the smaller mean grain-size along with the reduced content of aeolized quartz grains.

Opis:
During the 50-year-long intense petroleum exploration of the Palaeozoic–Mesozoic basement of the Carpathian Foredeep, more than 20 oil and gas accumulations have been discovered. The basic and most important oil-bearing levels in the Mesozoic section are Oxfordian carbonates and Cenomanian sandstones. The Nosówka, Zalesie, Trzebownisko–Krasne, Cetynia, Uszkowce and Lachowice hydrocarbon accumulations and numerous hydrocarbon shows have been found in the Palaeozoic horizons. This paper is focused on evaluation of reservoir properties of the entire Palaeozoic–Mesozoic basement of the Carpathian Foredeep and marginal part of the Outer Carpathians for finding new reservoir horizons. 558 rock samples from 51 wells in the Kraków–Lubaczów area were analysed. The well log results from 20 wells were additionally used for the assessment of petrophysical properties. The results of porosimetry measurements and well logs varied in all discussed Palaeozoic and Meso- zoic basement horizons of the Carpathian Foredeep. The best reservoir properties were estimated within the Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate complex. Despite great variability, the carbonate rocks display highest average porosity and good permeability values. The variability of reservoir properties is mostly a result of the character of the reservoir-porous-fracture space. Good reservoir properties were also estimated for the Upper Cretaceous carbonate rocks. However, in most of the analysed wells the potential reservoirs were watered. The Palaeozoic complex displays weaker reservoir properties and they mainly refer only to the Devonian–Lower Carboniferous horizon. The Lower Palaeozoic rocks display weak reservoir properties. Their potential is additio- nally lowered by negligible range of occurrence and a small thickness. Generally, the gas- and oil-bearing pro- perties of the analysed zone can be attributed only to the Jurassic–Cretaceous reservoir horizons. The remaining horizons, especially the Upper Palaeozoic complex, are only supplement to the reservoir potential of the area.

A 40-m-thick section of chalk exposed in the Chełm quarry (SE Poland) contains a rather poor assemblage of macrofauna and a well diversified assemblage of foraminifers. The planktonic foraminifer assem- blages characterized by a considerable number of representatives of Globigerinelloides and Heterohelix and the presence of Guembelitria cretacea indicate the lowest part of the Guembelitria cretacea Zone sensu Peryt (1980). Benthic foraminifers point out that the strata of the Chełm quarry section can be attributed to the lower part of the Upper Maastrichtian: i.e., the Gavelinella danica/Brotzenella preacuta Zone of the European Boreal Province or the Anomalinoides pinguis Zone distinguished in Poland (except the Carpathians). The occurrence of ammonites, such as Hoploscaphites constrictus lviviensis Machalski, Hoploscaphites schmidi (Birkelund), and Acanthoscaphites varians blaszkiewiczi Jagt & al. indicates that the Chełm succession belongs to the lower part of the Belemnitella junior Zone, i.e., to the Belemnitella junior–Spyridoceramus tegulatus Zone sensu Schulz & Schmid (1983). The correlation of the Chełm quarry section and the Middle Vistula River Valley section indicates that the equivalent interval of the former section is not exposed in the Middle Vistula River Valley and that it would occur between the Chotcza and Lucimia villages within the lower part of the Belemnitella junior Zone, i.e., within the Belemnitella junior-Spyridoceramus tegulatus Zone distinguished in NW Germany (Schulz & Schmid,1983).

The article presents flint materials obtained from settlement site of Samborzec-Opatów group from the Tonie 9 site in Lesser Poland. The flintworking of this unit is still poorly recognized. In the literature, special attention has mainly been paid to ceramic materials, especially in studies on the genesis of this group and its relations with other taxonomic units of the Neolithic in Lesser Poland (especially with the Malice culture and later groups of the Lendziel). Therefore, it is worth introducing the specificity of Samborzec-Opatów flintworking, especially since the recently arrived inventory from the Tonie 9 site is quite numerous and relatively homogeneous. Therefore, the main goal is to present materials that can be used for further studies, e.g. those of a comparative nature.

During the many years of archaeological research in the settlement micro-region in Ulów in Middle Roztocze, traces of human presence dated to Old and Middle Stone Ages (Palaeolithic and Mesolithic) were discovered. Most sources are flint materials, most of which lost their stratigraphic context due to subsequent settlement. At the current stage of research, their classification is possible only on the basis of a typological and comparative analysis. Most likely, the oldest traces of human occupancy in the vicinity of Ulów can be synchronized with a series of radiocarbon dating obtained for samples of charcoal from five different archaeological sites. The to-date discoveries have revealed new sources for research on the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods in south-eastern Poland.

Two-dimensional modelling of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and accumulation pro- cesses in SE Poland between Tarnów and Rzeszów was carried out for five source rock horizons, i.e. the Ordo- vician, Silurian, Middle Devonian–Lower Carboniferous carbonates, Lower Carboniferous clastics, and Middle Jurassic. Five cross-sections in the study area allowed the reconstruction of timing and range of petroleum processes. The best source rocks related to the Ordovician and Silurian shales and mudstones reached “oil window” maturity within the entire study area and locally also reached the “gas window”. Generation of hydro- carbons was observed from all five source rocks, but the Ordovician and Silurian source rocks generated two and three times more hydrocarbons than the Lower Carboniferous and Jurassic source rocks, respectively. Expulsion took place only in case of the Lower Palaeozoic source rocks, but the volume of expelled hydrocarbons differed across the area. Hydrocarbons migrated from the Ordovician and Silurian source rocks to the Upper Jurassic (carbonates) and Upper Cretaceous (sandstones) reservoirs or to the Upper Palaeozoic carbonates in connection with the emplacement of the Carpathian thrust belt during the Miocene. Faults formed main migration pathways and hydrocarbons accumulated in structural and stratigraphic traps, located in the vicinity of faults. In places, traps are associated with a deep Miocene erosion surface. The onset of hydrocarbon generation took place during the Neogene, mainly the Miocene, but in the north, generation and expulsion started earlier – at the end of the Mesozoic.

post-mining lakes, sulphur mining, reclamation, aquatic vegetation, spontaneous succession, Jeziórko, SE Poland
Opis:
Macrophytes and selected physical-chemical water properties were studied in 17 post-mining lakes of Jeziórko Sulphur Mine – one of the largest borehole sulphur mines in the world. Artificial lakes were constructed in subsidence depressions during the reclamation process of mining fields. They were characterized by high mineralization – conductivity ranged from 723 to 2295 μS/cm. The reaction was near neutral, or more frequently, slightly alkaline. Concentrations of phosphorus and organic matter were low. In the group of hydrophytes, Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum, Najas marina, Utricularia vulgaris, Eleocharis acicularis, Potamogeton pectinatus, Potamogeton natans and Potamogeton pusillus were frequently dominant. In several lakes, large macroscopic algae dominated – charophytes forming large, dense Chara meadows. In marsh communities, Phragmites australis was the most expansive. Reclamation process had a positive effect on diversity, some of the species found in the study area are regionally rare, including one species which is threatened in Poland (Najas minor). No alien species were recorded.

Quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Palaeozoic sequence from the Lower Cambrian to Silurian strata of the Polish and Ukrainian parts of the Carpathian Foredeep basement in the Tarnogród–Stryi area were evaluated based on the results of geochemical analyses of 475 rock samples collected from 45 wells. The best source rocks were found in the Silurian strata where the present total organic carbon (TOC) content is up to 2.6 wt%. They occur in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, where the median of the present and the initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the individual wells amount to 0.98 and 1.6 wt%, respectively. The Cambrian and Ordovician strata have a poorer hydrocarbon potential and their present TOC content never exceeds 1 wt%. In all of the investigated Lower Palaeozoic strata, organic matter is represented by the oil-prone Type-II kerogen deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of source rocks ranges from early mature (the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes) in selected zones of the Silurian strata in the vicinity of Wola Obszańska, through the middle and the final phase of “oil window” in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Polish part of the study area, to the overmature stage in the Ordovician strata in the south-eastern part of the study area (Ukraine).

Opis:
We provide the results of 24-hour observations made in a meadow site located in a small river valley in Central Europe. Samples of atmospheric air were taken from three horizons: near the soil (0.05 m), in the grass (0.5 m) and above the meadow (2 m) at two-hour intervals. At the same time, samples of soil air were collected from two horizons: -0.1 and -0.5 m. We have found a variation of δ13C above the ground from -6‰ during the day to -20‰ late at night accompanied by variations in CO2 concentration from 270 ppm during the day, to various levels late at night at different heights above the ground. The maximum concentration was 1430 ppm at the ground level. The correlation coefficient between δ 13C and reciprocal of concentration was the highest (R2 = 0.984) for the samples collected 2 m above the ground, the regression line clearly indicating CO2 mixing from the two sources: atmospheric and biogenic reservoirs. The intercept of the mixing line yields δC = -23.0‰ for the biogenic CO2. In contrast, the diurnal variations in the soil were relatively small, δ13C varied from -21.6 to -23.4‰, while CO2 concentration from 4300 to 8200 and from 24 700 to 34 500 ppm at depths of 0.1 m and 0.5 m respectively, which is less than 2-fold. Small diurnal variations are characteristic of dry soils, where δ13C is weakly correlated with CO2 concentration (in our case R2 was 0.30 and 0.54, respectively).

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono stan zanieczyszczenia wód pierwszego poziomu wodonośnego azotanami na obszarze zagospodarowanym rolniczo (około 300 km2) w zachodniej części Polesia Zachodniego (Lubelskiego) i Wołyńskiego. Zawartość azotanów została zbadana w wodach podziemnych metodą fotometryczną za pomocą fotometru Slandi LF300 w 31 punktach dokumentacyjnych (studniach kopanych, studni wierconej, źródłach i sondach ręcznych). Zanieczyszczenie wód azotanami (o zawartości powyżej 50 mg NO‾3 /dm3) stwierdzono w 10 próbkach wody (32% populacji danych), a stan zagrożenia tym zanieczyszczeniem (o zawartości 25÷50 mg NO‾3 /dm3) odnotowano w 5 punktach. Stwierdzone zanieczyszczenie wód pierwszego poziomu ma charakter lokalny i związane jest głównie z nieuporządkowaną gospodarką komunalną oraz złym stanem sanitarnym gospodarstw rolnych. Migracji zanieczyszczeń transportowanych przez infiltrujące wody opadowe z powierzchni terenu do systemu wodonośnego sprzyjają dobre własności filtracyjne skał strefy aeracji i płytkie występowanie poziomu wód podziemnych (do 5 m).
This paper presents research concerning nitrates contamination within the Uppermost Aquifer on 300 km2 study area in Polissia region, SE Poland. The analysis of nitrate concentration was conducted with the use of field-gauges set SLANDI. 31 analyzed groundwater samples were collected from hand-dug wells, pumping wells, springs and water-sampling probes. The nitrates pollution of groundwater (NO‾3 > 50 mg/dm3) was confirmed for 10 samples (32% of population), and potential nitrate pollution hazard (NO‾3 > 50 mg/dm3) was determined for 5 groundwater samples. Such results were determined in samples coming from the following villages: Stefanów, Wólka Cycowska, Przymiarki, Kolonia Wesołówka, Sławek, Stręczyn Nowy, Buza, Chojeniec, Romanówka, Stasin Dolny, Świerszczów, Zgniła Struga, Biekiesza and Dorohucza. High nitrates concentration within the Uppermost Aquifer were confirmed only locally, nearby farms characterized by invalid sanitary condition. In such cases the nitrate pollution of groundwater was caused mostly by waste from farming production and/or leaking septic tanks. High nitrates concentration was usually connected with high content of sulfates (from 57.5 up to 267.2 mg/dm3) and chlorides (Cl‾ from 15.4 up to 97.3 mg/dm3). Relatively high rate of nitrate pollution migration, from the land surface towards the Uppermost Aquifer, resulted from the specific construction of vadose zone, which is built of permeable sands and limestone. Additionally, groundwater table is situated on the depth up to 5 m below land surface. The above mentioned conditions caused that, the greater part of the examined area is characterized by high vulnerability (65% of the area) or extremely high vulnerability (30%) to anthropogenic contamination. Vertical migration time of anthropogenic pollution, transported by infiltrating water from the land surface to the aquifer, is estimated on less than 5 years for the areas of extremely high vulnerability, and on 5 up to 25 years for the areas of high vulnerability.

Opis:
The results of micropaleonthological studies of the Sarmatian (upper Miocene) Krakowiec Clays from primary deposit as well as re-deposited ones were applied to the analysis of the stratigraphic profile of the Sopot valley fills. The study site was at the break section of the Sopot River valley in a contact zone of southern escarpment between the central part of the Roztocze and Sandomierz Basin regions (SE Poland). Species of fossil microfauna (foraminiferans, radiolarians), sponges and mollusks, as well as residual deposits were used. The documented, even if apparently small change in the lithostatigraphic profile of the Sopot valley fills, i.e., the presence of pre-Pleistocene deposits in its floor, is very important for the valley history and for interpreting other problems of river breaks and the Roztocze escarpment zone itself, e.g., sclae of the Holocene movements elevating the Roztocze Region, and their effect on expected intensity of deep fluvial erosion. In the sub-scarp zone of the Tomaszów Roztocze subregion the Krakowiec Clays occur rather shallowly. In the Sopot valley (‘Czartowe Pole’landscape preserve) they are in contact with calcareous formations. In two levels of natural clays’exposures, a dozen or so foraminiferan taxa were found. They were also below the primary deposit on the floor levels of the Sopot valley fills. The residuum of the studied strata consists of glauconite and pre-Pleistocene quartz sands, without silicate and alumosilicate, typical for postglacial formations. The Sarmatian clays present in residue were redeposited at least in the pre-Pleistocene. From the clays top up to the surface of valley fills, are Holocene deposits. The study revealed that: (1) during the Holocene and earlier the Sopot valley fills were not removed completely; (2) the floor of the valley is made not of the youngest, Holocene strata, but much older; (3) the presence of the Sarmatian microfauna in the alluvia allows to date the studied deposits as pre-Pleistocene (Pliocene?); (4) fine quartz sands and glauconite (a specific form of hydromica) both forming the residuum of the studied valley fill levels, together with the absence of other silicates and alumosilicates that are common in the Pleistocene formations, exclude the studied Krakowiec Clays from the group of glacial or fluvioglacial (Pleistocene) formations; (5) the youngest (latest Pleistocene –Holocene) movements elevating the Roztocze Region and the resulting deep fluvial erosion do not correspond with shallow occurrence of the pre-Pleistocene valley fills; this requires further discussion.

Opis:
Do badań wybrano obszar południowo-wschodniej Polski. Region charakteryzuje się ogromnym zróżnicowaniem środowiska przyrodniczego, którego zasoby od wieków były intensywnie wykorzystywane i przekształcane. Prace szczegółowe prowadzono w wybranych, zróżnicowanych funkcjonalnie powiatach i gminach województwa lubelskiego, podkarpackiego i świętokrzyskiego. Analizowano, w jakim stopniu retardacja przekształcenia zasobów przyrodniczych jest uwzględniana i przedstawiana w dokumentach strategicznych.
Stopping the overexploitation of non-renewable and, to some extent, renewable resources represents an enormous challenge in the context of preserving these resources for the future generations. The problem of mitigating the transformation of natural resources should be viewed from the perspective of animate and inanimate nature (including the rational use of mineral and water resources), reducing the emission of harmful substances to the environment, excessive production and storage of waste as well as stopping the degradation of space. At the same time, the scope of using natural resources and protecting them is regulate d by relevant legislation and provisions in strategic and planning documents. Taking into account the problems of mitigation at the programming and planning stage enables making appropriate decisions in the environment management process at various levels of local government. The area selected for study was south-eastern Poland. The region is characterised by a great diversity of its natural environment, whose resources have been intensively used and transformed for several centuries. Detailed studies were conducted in selected, functionally varied counties and municipalities of the Lubelskie, Podkarpackie and Świętokrzyskie provinces. It was analysed to what extent the retardation of natural resources transformation was taken into accountand presented in strategic documents.

Opis:
Tree−ring analysis has been used to evaluate the influence of industrial pollution on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) growing in the Tarnobrzeg region. 237 samples were taken from stands located in two profiles to picture dependence of health conditions of trees on distance from the emitter. The Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Works was the main source of pollution in that region. Factories in Mielec and Nowa Dęba as well as the Połaniec Power Plant could be additional sources of emission. Response of trees to anthropogenic stress was clearly visible in the years 1970−1990, when growth reductions occurred at the majority of the investigated trees. At the beginning of 1990s the decreasing trend stopped and wider tree−rings could be observed.

Opis:
Mieczysław (Moses) Maślanko (1903–1986) was one of the most prominent personalities among the lawyers of communist Poland between 1945 and 1956. He was born in War- saw in a Jewish family. In Warsaw, he finished his secondary education and graduated from the law department of Warsaw University in 1926. Between 1927 and 1933, he took a court and defence attorney internship and became a registered attorney. During the German occupation of Poland in 1939–1945, he was persecuted by the Ger- mans. Until 1943, he was kept prisoner in the Warsaw Ghetto where he was appointed Chairman of the Disciplinary Court at the Judenrat. Between April 1943 and May 1945, he was imprisoned in the Majdanek concentration camp, Auschwitz concentration camp, and Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Upon his return to Warsaw, he resumed his work as attorney. He specialised in criminal cases. The communist authorities allowed him to participate in the court trials of the regime opponents. He defended (participated) in political trials before military courts and before the so-called “secret courts-martial” which in fact were a travesty of justice. He was admitted to the register of court-martial attorneys and his name showed also in the “secret registers”, i.e. of attorneys who were authorised to participate in secret trials. His contribution to the most famous trials of the opponents of the communist regime was to support the statements of the prosecution. In 1946-1956, he was a member of the Supreme Council of Attorneys (Bar association) which was in fact filled by way of a decision of the Minister of Justice. After 1956, the attorneys representation bodies filed several disciplinary cases against him. After 1956, he continued to work as a criminal defence attorney.
