Opis:
The effects of pine and oak forest litter on mycorrhizal status of 2−year−old Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown in a bare−root nursery was investigated. The research was carried out in the nursery of Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Lithuania. Ectomycorrhizal communities were assessed by a combination of morphological and molecular techniques. Statistical analysis revealed significant effect of litter treatment on some growth parameters of seedlings: seedling height, needle dry weight and total seedling weight. The survival rate of seedlings was significantly highest for oak litter, intermediate for pine litter, and lowest for control soil. Pine seedlings were colonized by indigenous ecto− and ectendomycorrhizal symbionts. Seven mycorrhizal species (Suillus luteus, S. variegatus, Wilcoxina mikolae, Tuber sp., Tomentella sp., Cenococcum geophilum, Amphinema byssoides) were distinguished on the roots of pine seedlings as well as one ectomycorrhizal symbiont not identified to species level. In total, 6 mycorrhizal types were found in control soil, 5 in pine litter, and 8 in oak litter. Suilloid (S. luteus and S. variegatus) and Wilcoxina mycorrhizae were dominant on tested seedlings, irrespective of litter addition. Seedlings grown in untreated nursery soil were 34% colonized by W. mikolae, while suilloid mycorrhizae were dominant after litter treatment (81% in pine litter and 63% in oak litter). We may conclude that suilloid mycorrhizae are better adapted to the conditions related to litter addition than W. mikolae.

Opis:
In recent years, particular attention has been paid to enhancing the meaning of natural regeneration, which is a part of the implementation of the concept of sustainable development and is one of the pillars of the natural direction of forest silviculture. Since the middle of the last century, the contribution of natural regeneration in Poland has been steadily increasing. The paper presents the analysis of density and variability of growth traits of natural regeneration of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in south-eastern Poland. The study involved four compartments, which were prepared with the use of tiller and plough (active and double mouldboard). Density of seedlings, their height and root collar diameter, were measured. Density and growth characteristics of seedlings were higher at the tiller area and furrow compared with nonscarified soil and ridge. The highest cover with herbaceous plant was reported in ridges and non-scarified soil, but in most of the analysed compartments, it had no effect on the density of seedlings. It was found that different methods for soil preparation create different conditions for germination of seeds, which is reflected in the number of seedlings and its growth traits.

Opis:
The paper presents laboratory test results of the effect of water extracts from the aboveground parts of herbaceous plants on seed germination and germinant growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Under Polish site conditions species considered suitable for plantations as ground cover plants were selected for the experiment. The use of cover crops may be an alternative for the manual, mechanical and chemical methods of protecting forest plantation against weeds. The results of the research concerning allelopathic effect of the ground cover plants point to the uselessness of their application in areas designated for seeding or natural seeding of Scots pine during green mass decomposition of cultivated plants.

Opis:
Number of Melolontha grubs in forest soils reforested with Scots pine (Lubartów A, LA, Lubartow B, LB) and those in post agricultural soils afforested with this species (Swierczyna, SW) were assessed before (autumn 2011, spring 2012) and one year after (2013) planting. At the same time, mortality of seedlings was evaluated on both study sites. Pine sawdust was mixed with soil in rows (treatment T1) or applied under seedling roots just before planting in April 2012 (treatment T2). In May 2013, seedling mortality varied significantly, from 27.5% in LB to 51.0% in LA, whereas the differences between the treatments were not significant. The mean number of Melolontha grubs decreased from 35/0.15 m³ of soil in autumn 2011 to 3/0.15 m³ in spring 2012 and in spring 2013. The differences depended on the site, treatment and grubs spatial distribution in soil. Addition of sawdust did not influence either seedlings, or insects mortality. T2 was more beneficial for Scots pine seedlings growing on agricultural soils, while treatment T1 – for those on forest soils. On the other hand, pine sawdust applied under roots of the seedlings seemed to attract Melolontha spp. grubs.

The paper presents the results of the research on the effect of a biopreparate containing vegetative mycelium of Hebeloma crustuliniforme on the pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium sp. and Rhizoctonia solani causing the damping−off of pine seedlings and on the growth of the pathogens under in vitro conditions. The obtained results do not clearly indicate the positive impact of H. crustuliniforme on seedling health.

Opis:
The article compares the impact of production technique, planting material, soil type and moisture on the growth of pine seedlings. The material used in the experiment comprised pines grown in containers to which controlled mycorrhization with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme was applied, as well as pines that had not been mycorrhized. The seedlings were grown in pots on two types of substrate (forest and post−agricultural soil) varying in cohesiveness and fertility. Four moisture levels (20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) were adopted.
