Opis:
The contemporary “two−step model” of growth of the scleractinian skeleton is based mostly on transversely sectioned samples. According to this model, many skeletal elements e.g., septa are formed in two temporally distinct phases represented by (1) “centers of calcification” that are composed of homogenously distributed microcrystalline or/and organic components and serve as scaffolding for the further growth of (2) fibrous skeleton. Based on transverse and longitudinal sections and histochemical staining techniques, I demonstrate herein that in extant corals (i.e., Stephanocyathus, Flabellum, Desmophyllum, “Ceratotrochus”, Galaxea, Platygyra), the entire septal skeleton is composed of superimposed layers of mineral and organic−enriched phases. These may be interrupted in some directions of growth but in other directions there is continuity between “centers of calcification” and “fibers”, making any distinction between these two structures unclear. As an alternative to the “two−step model”, a “layered model” of skeletal growth is proposed, that explains the differences between “centers of calcification” and “fibers” in terms of differential growth dynamics between these regions. Instead of the traditional but inadequate “trabecular” and “centers of calcification” concepts, a distinction between deposits of the Rapid Accretion Front (dRAF; which in particular cases can be organized into Centers of Rapid Accretion (CRA), and Thickening Deposits (TD) is proposed. In the dRAF region, mineral components, ca. 50 nm in diameter, seem to match the size range of nodular structures recently interpreted as nascent CaCO₃ crystals. Remarkable regularity of the mineral/organic phase alternations (microbanding) in the TD skeleton of zooxanthellate corals and lack of such regular microbanding in azooxanthellate coralla is a promising criterion for distinguishing these two ecological coral groups on a skeletal basis, and one that could be applicable to fossils.

Opis:
In the epicontinental Jurassic of Poland, scleractinian corals appeared in the Bathonian, but only in the Middle Oxfordian-Lower Kimmeridgian became a significant element of the shallow-water fauna. Over the whole area, Upper Jurassic coral facies are situated above the Oxfordian sponge megafacies. Middle Oxfordian Jurassic corals are the best known from the NE margin of the Holy Cross Mts and represented chiefly by lamellate colonies. The Upper Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian coral facies extends from the Pomerania, through central Poland to the fore-Carpathian region. Taxonomical and morphotypical coral diversifications of the Upper Oxfordian and Kimmeridian were higher than that of the Middle Oxfordian. In the Tethyan region, corals are known from the exotic pebbles of the Stramberk-type Tithonian limestones in the Carpathian Flysh and Pieniny Klippen Belt. The arguments against the interpretation of epicontinental coral accumulations as reefs, are as follows: abundance of lamellate corals and epithecate phaceloid taxa (the latter incapable to repair skeletal damages), high taxonomical diversification and frequency of corals with menianes representing presumable adaptations to filtering mode of nutrition, comparable rate of growth of coral constructions and of accumulation of surrounding sediment, association of corals characterized above with soft bottom and turbid water.

Opis:
Structures, reported as the trace fossil, Paralanicichnites conflueris, were described from the Palaeogene rocks of the Kachchh (Kutch) District, Gujarat State, India, by Ghare and Badve as a new ichnogenus and ichnospecies. Restudy of the type specimens revealed that the form described as a burrow in fact is a scleractinian coral, as evidenced by its phaceloid morphology, septate calcareous exoskeleton, and twelve primary septa. It appears that there is also confusion regarding the exact geological formation, from which the specimens under consideration were taken by the original authors, as well as the age assigned by them.

Opis:
A colonial scleractinian coral Nowakocoenia cieszynica gen. et sp. nov. (suborder Stylinina, Incertae familiae) from Rudzica near Bielsko-Biała (Outer Carpathians) is described. The new genus differs from other plocoidal and cerioidal stylininas mainly in irregularity in development of septa and the presence of wall developed in advance of septa. Exact locality and geological position of the coral specimen is unknown. Palynological analysis of calcareous sandstone forming a thin coat around the coral specimen allowed age determination. 65 species (including 21 in open nomenclature) of dinoflagellate cysts were recognized. Co-occurrence of Cepadinium ventriosum and Phoberocysta neocomica indicate the latest Barremian-Early Aptian age of this deposit. The coral was synchronically or penesynchronically redeposited from shallow water environment to flysch basin. Age and lithology of the sediment coating the specimen suggest the Grodziszcze Sandstones as coral-bearing deposits.
W pracy opisano kolonijnego koralowca sześciopromiennego (Scleractinia) Nowakocoenia cieszynica gen. et sp. nov.

Opis:
Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in stony coral species (Fungiidae) along the Eastern coast of the Red Sea. Six species – Fungia scutaria, F. danai, F. corona, F. repanda, Ctenactis echinata and Lithophyllor lobata – were examined for MAAs at water depths of 5, 10, 15 and 20 m. Protein and chlorophyll were also determined and showed higher contents in winter than in summer. Generally, the total content of MAAs in summer was found to be approximately three times greater than in winter. Overall, concentrations of MAAs were greatest at a depth of 5 m. Porphyra-334 was the most abundant MAA in F. scutaria and F. danai, whereas asterina-330 was either not detectable (e.g. L. lobata) or present in low concentrations (e.g. F. danai, F. repanda and C. echinata). Shinorine was not detected in F. danai or L. lobata. Both C. echinata and L. lobata had the lowest concentrations of MAAs, presumably because of their large calcareous skeletons. The variation in MAA concentrations among seasons and water depths is probably due to a number of factors, including the intensity of solar radiation, turbidity and phylogenetic variation.
