    In 1811, the poetic academy of Toulouse awarded an epistle about hope in medical practice, by Jean-Marie Caillau, a now unknown physician who combined medicine and writing. This article provides contextualizing and close reading. It presents Caillau’s works and reputation, and highlights how he defined himself as a doctor-writer. Then it focuses on the didactic epistle, in which hope is regarded as a moral palliative, or a soothing and comforting illusion that the empathetic clinician prescribes to incurable, moribund and suffering people. The study of the text reveals the significant use of the peritext, the strong connection between medical discourse and poetical devices, and the praise of an eloquent physician at the patient’s bedside. By correlating hope and eloquence, Caillau embodies and promotes the dual figure of the doctorpoet. This article thus explores the fruitful and sometimes challenging interplay between medicine and poetry during the early 19th century.

    Although a relatively short text, the abstract of a paper summarizes the most important issues raised in the main text. The abstract is, at least initially, the key text on which journal editors, reviewers and eventually readers form their initial judgement on the overall quality of the full manuscript. Therefore, it is essential to execute this step of the writing process well. In this article, we discuss the purpose of an abstract, why it is important, and how to write a good abstract. Increasingly, journal abstracts are structured to follow the IMRAD format (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). We provide examples of well written and badly written abstracts, with explanatory notes, to help readers understand the key points that need to be addressed and mistakes that should be avoided. Since international abstracts are generally written in English, preparing an abstract can be especially challenging for researchers who are not native speakers of English. We close this article with general linguistic advice, paying particular attention to key terms and word choice than can meaningfully express an author’s intention in a concise way. The points raised in this article will help authors improve their scientific writing and enable their findings to be expressed with clarity.

To further advance science, particularly in the currently emerging era of individualized medicine, the collaboration of researchers with a varied level of experience and from different areas of expertise is needed. It is vital to publish the results of research quickly and effectively. Knowing the basic mechanisms of writing and publishing will help to disseminate research results more effectively.

    This paper presents various comments and suggestions concerning the training of intertextual skills. This goal results from the fact that school didactics pays insufficient attention to intertextuality understood as a purely verbal phenomenon. The article focuses especially on the academic teaching stage since the preparation of one’s own statement based on the words of others is an obligatory skill for every student.     In this paper we propose a modeling of contextual information around a terminological unit, for the needs of a scientific writing aid tool in the biomedical field. We focus more specifically on the modeling of significant phraseic contexts that we formalize as semantically characterized argument patterns. This modeling is based on a large corpus of biomedical scientific articles and relay on semantic types specified in a domain ontology, Unified Medical Language System.
    Modélisation du contexte des lexies spécialisées en vue de l’élaboration d’un système d’aide à la rédaction scientifique dans le domaine biomédical Dans cet article nous proposons une modélisation de l’information contextuelle autour des lexies spécialisées en vue de l’élaboration d’un système d’aide à la rédaction scientifique dans le domaine biomédical. Nous considérons plus spécifiquement la modélisation du contexte phrastique décrit en termes de schémas actantiels que nous caractérisons sémantiquement. Cette modélisation est fondée sur un grand corpus d’articles scientifiques dans le domaine biomédical. Elle s’appuie également sur les Types Sémantiques d’une ontologie du domaine, Unified Medical Language System.

    The purpose of the following paper is to reflect on the importance of academic writing in higher education and to discuss some difficulties both in the teaching process and practical implementation. For many students studying German as a second language producing academic texts in German is a daunting and „painful“ task. The complexity of the writing process often leads to many linguistic problems, especially in the area of the vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Why is academic writing so difficult for many students? One of many reasons is that the students haven’t enough practice in using what they have learned during their studies. Therefore, practising the academic writing skills should be supported at all levels within entire the higher education.

    Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę charakterystyki eksplicytnych wykładników relacji nadawczo-odbiorczych w dawnych językoznawczych tekstach naukowych (z przełomu XIX i XX w.) i wskazania ich funkcji w analizowanych tekstach. Materiał badawczy stanowią cztery dawne publikacje naukowe (Antoniego Kaliny, Jana Łosia, Aleksandra Brücknera i Zenona Klemensiewicza). Opisano specyfikę procesu komunikacji naukowej (z uwzględnieniem wszystkich komponentów aktu komunikacji), zastosowano metodę próbki 100-wyrazowej (analizy wszystkich predykatów występujących we fragmencie w środkowej partii tekstu) i na tej podstawie skonstruowano wnioski dotyczące częstotliwości ich występowania w dawnych tekstach.
    The purpose of the present article is to describe and classify the clearly formulated exponents of sender-receiver in old scholarly linguistics-related texts (published at the turn of the 20th century). The research material includes four linguistic publications (written by Antoni Kalina, Jan Łoś, Aleksander Brückner and Zenon Klemensiewicz). The author described the specifics of communication process in science (taking into account all components of act of communication) and used the method of 1000-words sample (analysis of all predicates occurring in a fragment from the middle part of the text). On the basis the author drew conclusions about them frequency in analyzed publications.

    Scientific writing is an essential part of a research scientist’s career and is usually the end process of many years’ hard bench work generating the data for publication. Clear communication of your research findings, the aims and potential importance of your work are the foundation of all good scientific manuscripts. Writing a scientific manuscript in English, especially if English is not your first language, can make an already challenging task even more difficult. The purpose of this article is to assist authors in the preparation of manuscripts intended for submission to peer-reviewed journals. The article mainly focusses on the biomedical sciences, but researchers of other scientific disciplines can also benefit from the content. We provide useful advice on all the main subsections of a standard research manuscript, from selecting an appropriate title, through to preparing a properly organized discussion. Advice on how each section should be arranged as well as points to be avoided can be found in the guide. As a general guide the most important point of a manuscript is that the research findings contained are presented clearly and accurately without excessive repetition or embellishment. Finally, this article closes with a section which contains language mistakes which are frequently made by authors whose first language is not English.

    Introduction and aim: The passive voice has recently been claimed to be excessively used in medical research papers making them less clear and for some people difficult to understand. Still, it is thought that the passive voice used in scientific writing contributes to an objective presentation of the subject matter, it emphasizes the action rather than the doer of the action and it also acts as a means of impersonalization. The aim of the paper is to investigate the frequency of occurrence of the passive voice in English and Polish medical research articles. Material and methods: The study is based on five medical research articles taken from The British Medical Journal and one article in manuscript and their Polish translations. It is a contrastive analysis of the use of the passive voice in English and Polish medical research articles. Results: The frequency of occurrence of the passive voice in English and Polish medical research articles is roughly the same (an average of 30% of all the finite verbs). The passive with an expressed agent is rare in the analysed articles. The passive voice in English is translated into Polish mainly by means of the -no, - to constructions. Conclusions: The frequency of occurrence of the passive voice in medical research articles is high both in English and in Polish. It is due to the nature and function of scientific writing, by means of which scientists aim to give an impersonal, objective and factual account of their research.
    Wstęp i cel: Twierdzi się ostatnio, że strona bierna jest nadmiernie używana w artykułach medycznych czyniąc je mniej jasnymi i dla niektórych ludzi trudnymi do zrozumienia. Jednakże sądzi się, iż strona bierna używana w stylu naukowym przyczynia się obiektywnego przedstawienia przedmiotu badań, kładzie nacisk na czynność, a nie na sprawcę czynności, a także umożliwia ich bezosobowy opis. Celem pracy jest zbadanie częstotliwości występowania strony biernej w angielskich i polskich artykułach medycznych. Materiał i metody: Badanie oparte jest na pięciu artykułach medycznych zaczerpniętych z The British Medical Journal i na jednym artykule w formie manuskryptu oraz na ich polskich tłumaczeniach. Jest to kontrastywna analiza zastosowania strony biernej w angielskich i polskich artykułach medycznych. Wyniki: Częstotliwość występowania strony biernej w angielskich i polskich artykułach medycznych jest mniej więcej taka sama (średnio 30% wszystkich czasowników w formie osobowej). Strona bierna z wyrażonym agensem występuje w badanych artykułach rzadko. Strona bierna jest przetłumaczona na język polski głównie za pomocą konstrukcji -no, -to. Wnioski: Częstotliwość występowania strony biernej w artykułach medycznych jest duża, zarówno w języku angielskim, jak i polskim. Wpływa na to natura i funkcja stylu naukowego, przy pomocy którego naukowiec przedstawia wyniki swoich badań w sposób bezosobowy, obiektywny i rzeczowy.
