Opis:
The paper examines the transition between Nicholas Maxwell’s philosophy of science, called Aim Oriented Empiricism (AOE), and the project of the revolution in the sciences and the arts advocated by him. The aim is to demonstrate that, contrary to what author seems to be convinced of, the former does not entail the latter. It is at the same time argued that the conception of science propounded by Maxwell has serious pragmatic consequences and marks out certain attitudes – AOE does indeed necessitate far-reaching institutional changes, yet these ought to be viewed as the results of rank-and-file initiatives and transformations as opposed to being construed as the upshot of attempted implementation of a philosophic design.

Największym wkładem Darwina do nauki jest to, że dopełnił on rewolucji kopernikańskiej, przenosząc na grunt biologii koncepcję natury jako systemu materii w ruchu, który podlega prawom przyrody. Wraz z odkryciem doboru naturalnego Darwin sprowadził zagadnienie pochodzenia i przystosowania organizmów do sfery nauki. Adaptacyjne cechy organizmów można obecnie wyjaśnić, podobnie jak zjawiska świata nieożywionego, jako rezultat procesów przyrodniczych bez odwoływania się do Inteligentnego Projektanta. Rewolucje kopernikańską i darwinowską można postrzegać jako dwa etapy jednej rewolucji naukowej. Wspólnie dały one początek nauce we współczesnym sensie tego słowa, czyli takiej, w której wyjaśnianie polega na odwoływaniu się do praw przyrody. Darwinowska teoria doboru naturalnego wyjaśnia "projekt" i niezwykłą różnorodność organizmów jako rezultat procesów naturalnych - stopniowej kumulacji spontanicznie powstających zmian (mutacji) przesiewanych przez dobór naturalny. Jakie cechy zostaną wyselekcjonowane, uzależnione jest od tego, do jakich zmian dojdzie w danym czasie i miejscu, a to z kolei zależy zarówno od losowego procesu mutacji, jak też od uprzedniej historii organizmów. Mutacje i dobór wspólnie napędzały ten cudowny proces, który - począwszy od mikroskopijnych organizmów - doprowadził do powstania storczyków, ptaków i ludzi. Teoria ewolucji postuluje, że w realnym życiu splatają się ze sobą przypadek i konieczność, losowość i determinizm. Fundamentalnym odkryciem Darwina było to, że istnieje proces, który jest twórczy, chociaż pozbawiony świadomości.
Darwin’s greatest contribution to science is that he completed the Copernican Revolution by drawing out for biology the notion of nature as a system of matter in motion governed by natural laws. With Darwin’s discovery of natural selection, the origin and adaptations of organisms were brought into the realm of science. The adaptive features of organisms could now be explained, like the phenomena of the inanimate world, as the result of natural processes, without recourse to an Intelligent Designer. The Copernican and the Darwinian Revolutions may be seen as the two stages of the one Scientific Revolution. They jointly ushered in the beginning of science in the modern sense of the word: explanation through natural laws. Darwin’s theory of natural selection accounts for the „design” of organisms, and for their wondrous diversity, as the result of natural processes, the gradual accumulation of spontaneously arisen variations (mutations) sorted out by natural selection. Which characteristics will be selected depends on which variations happen to be present at a given time in a given place. This in turn depends on the random process of mutation as well as on the previous history of the organisms. Mutation and selection have jointly driven the marvelous process that, starting from microscopic organisms, has yielded orchids, birds, and humans. The theory of evolution conveys chance and necessity, randomness and determinism, jointly enmeshed in the stuff of life. This was Darwin’s fundamental discovery, that there is a process that is creative, although not conscious.

They have brought two new and entirely independent, fields of scientific research – nanotechnology and systems biology. Thanks to these disciplines, a new paradigm was born opening a new way of research in biology. It enables a holistic treatment of living organisms. As a consequence of these changes, an entirely new picture of the interface between physics and biology emerges.

Contemporary corporate reporting is still focused on financial capital. Intellectual capital is ignored by conventional accounting. Scientific revolution should be expected in this area. It is not possible to avoid it, especially since other social sciences - sociology, economics and management - have already resolved this issue and the phenomenon of emergence of the knowledge-based economy cannot be denied. Accounting is powerful tool for social impact. Its paradigm determines social imagination of economic processes, and it should be based on the axiological principle of true and fair view. The aim of this paper is to present a clear fact: accounting paradigm focused on financial capital inhibits the development of a knowledge-based economy and post-industrial society. The article contains the proof: the traditional balance sheets focused on tradable assets and financial capital is not suitable for providing a true and fair view of the knowledge-based enterprises. The analysis is an invitation to take a broad and interdisciplinary research on the role of financial accounting in the modern society. Accounting should not be shaped exclusively by accountants corporations. Every contemporary economist, sociologist, philosopher, logician, mathematician, and even a lawyer and ethicist, who feels partly responsible for the future of the economy and society, has a duty to be interested in accounting theory and the shape of the financial statements.

“Normal science” is a concept introduced by Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). In Kuhn’s view, normal science means “puzzle solving”, solving problems within the paradigm-framework most successful in solving current major scientific problems-rather than producing major novelties. This paper examines Kuhnian and Popperian accounts of normal science and their criticisms to assess if normal science is good. The advantage of normal science according to Kuhn was “psychological”: subjective satisfaction from successful “puzzle solving”. Popper argues for an “intellectual” science, one that consistently refutes conjectures (hypotheses) and offers new ideas rather than focus on personal advantages. His account is criticized as too impersonal and idealistic. Feyerabend’s perspective seems more balanced; he argues for a community that would introduce new ideas, defend old ones, and enable scientists to develop in line with their subjective preferences. The paper concludes that normal science has no one clear-cut set of criteria encompassing its meaning and enabling clear assessment.

Artykuł podejmuje tematykę czasu – mającego w chrześcijaństwie „podstawowe znaczenie” (Jan Paweł II) – w aspekcie jego linearnej interpretacji. Problem zawiera się w pytaniu, czy linearna interpretacja koncepcji czasu wyczerpuje jego rozumienie w chrześcijańskiej doktrynie? Autor pyta również o genezę interpretacji linearnej i wskazuje na kilka czynników istotnych dla jej wykształcenia się: nowożytna rewolucja naukowa (odkrycie głębi czasu sięgającej 13,7 mld lat zamiast 6 tys.), pooświeceniowe osłabienie oddziaływania idei Opatrzności Bożej; przemiany cywilizacyjne i kontakty interkulturowe (zapoznanie się z innymi niż zachodnie koncepcjami czasu). Autor skłania się ku tezie, że forsowana m.in. przez Oscara Cullmanna w XX wieku i współgrająca z historiozbawczą orientacją nowszej teologii linearna koncepcja czasu może być uznana za biblijną pod pewnymi warunkami, a mianowicie przy uznaniu wpływu wyżej wymienionych nowożytnych czynników na jej sformułowanie. Powyższe motywy ubogacają rozumienie genezy linearnej koncepcji czasu.
The paper discusses the notion of time – one of fundamental importance in Christianity (John Paul II) – interpreting it as linear. The problem lies in the question whether the linear concept of time exhausts its full doctrinal interpretation. The author looks for the conceptual origins of linear time and pinpoints the crucial sources: the modern scientific revolution (the discovery of the depths of time stretching from 6 thousand years to 13.7 billion years), post-Enlightenment weakening of the idea of Providence, cultural transformations and exchanges leading to learning about other perspectives on time. The author is inclined to support the thesis that the linear concept of time as a Bible-based one, and as formulated in the 20th C. by Oscar Cullmann and related to the historic-salvific orientation of modern theology, can only be accepted under some conditions, i.e. once one acknowledges the influence of the aforementioned modern sources on its formulation. These sources broaden the interpretation of the origin of this problematic concept.

The article takes up for a closer scrutiny the concept of universal human history, i.e. of the Homo Sapiens, since the very beginning of the species around 70 thousand years ago. And already here surfaces the key characteristics of Y. N. Harari’s attempt to write a concise history – it is a history of an animal called Sapiens, ordered in the sequence of three major historical revolutions: cognitive, agricultural and scientific. The first one, 70 thousand years ago, sparked off our history and consisted in creating a language, the next enabled our rapid civilization development some 10 thousand years ago. And the last one has been in operation since about the year 1500. The author critically assesses human achievements, especially in terms of long-term interfering in natural and global processes and rejects any claims for human’s privileged position in nature.

The telescope played a crucial role in the modern scientific revolution and occupied a significant place in Baroque culture. Interest in the telescope has been confirmed by Polish literary sources and writings, including scientific treatises and compendia of knowledge. Telescopes are the subject of works on the popularization of science written in the scientia curiosa convention. Reflections on the telescope appear in the context of deliberations on the world system, on the possibility of the existence of life forms on the Moon and other celestial bodies, and in the context of polemic against Aristotelian cosmology. The telescope is an element of religious deliberations concerning eschatology and those focused on astronomy, whose aspiration to get to know the universe is motivated by secular curiosity. The matter of conducting observations of the sky with the use of the telescope has turned into a comedy show, in a satirical way relating to the practice of astrology.

Artykuł jest rozwinięciem referatu wygłoszonego na sesji „Przyszłość i perspektywy badań naukoznawczych” zorganizowanej w ramach cyklu seminariów „Nauka a społeczeństwo”. Podejmując ten temat zwracam uwagę na najbardziej charakterystyczny rys współczesnej nauki, jakim jest jej dynamika, wynikiem której, jak i jej motorem jest postęp technologiczny. Na tym tle pokazuję przemiany jakie dokonały się i nadal dokonują w nauce współczesnej. Szczególną uwagę zwracam na problemy metanaukowe w obszarze badań metodologicznych odniesionych do multi-, inter- i transdyscyplinarności oraz pewne implikacje praktyczne dla polityki naukowej. W ten sposób wskazuję na aktualność i dalsze perspektywy badań naukoznawczych, w których Polska ma bogatą tradycję.
The paper is an extended edition of my speech on the session “Future and perspectives of science on science studies” which was organized in the Polish Academy of Sciences within the framework of seminars “Science and society”. In my paper I pay a special attention on the most characteristic feature of contemporary science which is its dynamic development, the result of which as well as its efficient power is the progress in modern technologies. On this background I try to show the changes in contemporary science. My focus is made on some methodological issues in appealing to multi-, inter- and transcidisciplinary research and their implications for science policy. In this way I intend to point out the actuality and perspectives of science studies in which Poland has a rich tradition.

Nowadays, computers are in common use, both in experimental and theoretical research. It is worth considering if the implementation of a new, universal research tool has significantly changed the science of the end of 20th century. The crucial question which I will try to answer is if computers have revolutionized the scientific research. In order to find the answer, I will describe modern digitally aided science, taking into consideration the research conducted in the greatest elementary physics laboratory. Philosophical interests of Joseph Życiński (1948-2011) in the domain of the philosophy of science were focused on the debate concerning the nature of science and philosophy of science that followed the Einstein-Planck revolution in science. The unexpected discovery of the philosophical, extra-scientific presuppositions in science, as well as of the extra-rational factors determining the way these presuppositions are accepted in science were to be explained within the meta-scientific framework. It is the aim of this paper to present ˙ Życiński’s diagnosis of this post-revolutionary situation in the philosophy of science as well as his critique of the metascientific answers to this challenge. The reasons will be given why all those answers are put under two dichotomous rubrics of internalism and externalism. It will be also explained how Życiński intends to supersede this false in his opinion opposition with a new concept of the doxatic rationality. However, the details of the metascientific proposal of Życiński will be given only in the subsequent paper. In order to perform the aim of the paper the metatheoretic tools set out by Popper (1979) will be used.
