In no field of knowledge did Aristotle leave more writings than in biology. He conducted research for longer and more intensively in zoology than in any other field. In these writings he mentions a good 550 animal and 60 plant species. While this includes the internal anatomy of around 110 animals, he dissected 60 species himself. The present contribution deals with the epistemic motifs and the meaning of Aristotelian biology in the context of his scientific curriculum. It is thus demonstrated that in De anima Aristotle’s actual explanations are preceded by an investigation of the principles, which aims to differentiate living objects from inanimate ones, and to develop a method of explanation based on the species-specific vital functions of living beings. This article provides an overview of the four main disciplines of Aristotelian biology: comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics and behavioral research. The text offers tabular overviews of the animals and plants dealt with by Aristotle.

Applying external scientific knowledge - i.e. knowledge achieved in the field of disciplines and sub-disciplines related to political science - in fulfiling such methodological functions as explanation and prevision (forecasting) is frequently approached in meta-scientific and meta-theoretical considerations as conducted on the ground of the family of scientific disciplines constituted by the sciences of politics. These functions can be ascribed to the purely epistemological aspect of scientific activity, not its institutional and organizational aspects. The dispute regarding the explanatory autonomy of political science is fallacious. From the logical and methodological point of view, the institutional “affiliation” of object knowledge, which constitutes a premise in complex inferences, does not play a role in the fulfilment of the assumed cognitive tasks; what is important instead is its epistemological credibility, as well as the goals of the research strategy selected by a given scholar.

Autorzy zastanawiają się nad zagadnieniami odpowiedzialnego kształcenia menedżerów przez szkoły wyższe w świetle koncepcji „3E” (etyka - ekonomia - efektywność) Wojciecha Gasparskiego. Zgodnie z tą koncepcją istnieje możliwość znalezienia „złotego środka” łączącego sferę zarządzania strategicznego, ukierunkowanego na osiągnięcie sukcesu ekonomicznego, z postulatami koncepcji społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu. Autorzy próbują zdiagnozować, jak powinny kształcić szkoły wyższe, aby wyjść naprzeciw postulatom etycznej triady zarządzania. Swoje rozważania sytuują w szerszym dyskursie, dzięki próbom przeanalizowania, w jaki sposób zmiany o charakterze ogólnospołecznym wpływają na redefinicję roli szkół wyższych, i co właściwie oznacza we współczesnym zglobalizowanym świecie pojęcie „kształcenie odpowiedzialne". Zdaniem autorów, odpowiedzialne (w rozumieniu programowym) kształcenie menedżerów nie może być w pełni realizowane przez uczelnie „programowo nieodpowiedzialne”, czyli takie, których władze nie rozumieją zjawisk współczesnego świata.
The authors reflect on responsible training of managers at schools of higher education in the light of Wojciech Gasparski’s ‘3E’ concept (Ethics - Economics - Effectiveness). According to that concept, it is possible to find the ‘golden mean’ by combining strategie management, focused on economic success, and the idea of corporate social responsibility. The authors attempt to diagnose how schools of higher education should train managers to address the ethical triad of management. They place their deliberations in a broader discourse by analysing how broad social changes redefine the role of schools of higher education and what 'responsible training’ actually means in the modern globalised world. In the authors’ opinion, responsible training of managers (in the sense of programmes/ curricula) cannot be fully delivered by ‘irresponsible schools’ i.e. ones where the governing bodies fail to understand developments of the modern world.

Mathematical exhibits are an element of mathematical and didactic culture. The text below analyzes the elements of the narrative language of exhibits/exhibitions, which may be the carrier of specific meanings created by visitors to science centres. The analyzes undertaken in the text made it possible to indicate the categories of the language of commands and questions contained in these narratives. They are a cognitive context for creating mathematical cultural meanings among visitors to the centres. The study was carried out in two science centers in Poland, using a qualitative strategy, analyzing documents. The results showed quite a rich educational potential of mathematical exhibits. The language of the exhibits revealed the possibility of extensive cognitive support in the mathematical development of people visiting the centres. Forming beliefs consistent with current scientific knowledge about math cognition and learning.
Eksponaty matematyczne są elementem kultury matematycznej i dydaktycznej. W poniższym tekście przeanalizowano elementy języka narracji eksponatów/ekspozycji, które mogą być nośnikiem określonych znaczeń tworzonych przez zwiedzających centra nauki. Podjęte w tekście analizy pozwoliły wskazać kategorie języka poleceń i pytań zawartych w tych narracjach. Są one kontekstem poznawczym dla tworzenia u zwiedzających centra matematycznych znaczeń kulturowych. Badanie zrealizowano w dwóch centrach nauki w Polsce, strategią jakościową, analizując dokumenty. Wyniki pokazały dość bogaty potencjał edukacyjny eksponatów matematycznych. Język eksponatów ujawnił możliwość szerokiego wsparcia poznawczego w rozwoju matematycznym osób zwiedzających centra. Tworzenie przekonań zgodnych z aktualną wiedzą naukową o poznawaniu matematyki i jej uczeniu się.

W poszukiwaniu krytycznych funkcji teologii daje się zauważyć narastającą ilość dylematów przychodzących z wnętrza teologii jak i z współczesnej wiedzy o świecie, z którymi teologia musi się mierzyć, nie tylko udzielając oczekiwanych odpowiedzi, ale też konstruując własny wykład wiary: odpowiedni dla czasów współczesnych i zgodny z Tradycją wiary. Trudno tak obszerny materiał przedstawić w krótkim artykule inaczej niż na wysokim poziomie ogólności. Kluczem do usystematyzowanego zarysowania tych zagadnień jest spostrzeżenie, że zadania teologii można rozpatrywać w czterech różnych perspektywach, opartych na schemacie zadań „ad extra” i „ad intra”. Silny akcent zostaje postawiony na spotkanie teologii z naukami nowożytnymi. Próba podjęcia prognoz dotyczących przyszłości zostaje oparta na analizie sytuacji współczesnej w teologii i na ekstrapolacji istniejących trendów w najbliższą przyszłość.
In the search for the critical functions of theology, we can find a growing number of dilemmas, which come from the theology itself and from the modern knowledge about the world. The theology has to present the Christian doctrine in the context of the modern world's view and still according to the roots of faith. It is difficult to present such a broad problem in a short paper other than in a general perspective. The key to the systematization of the problem is an observation that the tasks of theology can be seen in four different perspectives, connected to distinction "ad extra" - "ad intra".  A strong accent is set on the encounter of theology and science. The attempt to make predictions about the future situation is based on the analysis of the contemporary situation in theology and on the extrapolation of existing trends into the near future.

In the center of author’s attention there is the problem of forming a modern education system in the knowledge society. Education system should be considered in a context of a systematic method of approach, the essence of which is that relatively independent components are considered not separately, but in their interconnection, in the system with other components. In the center of the author’s attention there is a fundamental problem of the system interaction between modern science and education in the knowledge society. In the modern world, there is a radical difference between science and traditional forms of culture – scientific knowledge plays a significant role in solving technical, industrial, and organization management problems. The majority of people’s fields of activity in the society are becoming rationalized and coordinated. Science and higher education have the same social functions: the manufacture and transfer of knowledge. Knowledge becomes a basis for the organization of the people, a necessary condition of their joint activity. In the increasing degree, it acquires the significance of an integrating factor in social life, substituting traditional forms of people’s association.

This article addresses the functions analogical reasoning may have in science and everyday life. The focus ranges from the heuristic and probative value of this kind of reasoning to its illustrative and didactic utility, not excluding the opinion-forming, choice-facilitating, argumentative and justice-dispensing aspects of the inferences based upon similarity discernible between the instances being compared. In this context, the Author reveals disagreements between the standpoints of several scholars and singles out their most interesting stances and statements. In addition, the question of making the generalizations and understanding of notions (terms) presented in ordinary language as well as the problem of conceptualization have been touched upon. The relation of analogy to metaphor and its occurrence in humor, literature and poetics have also been addressed.

Czym jest pamięć? Czy tylko prostą rejestracją zdarzeń, które przebiegają przez nasze życie, zapisując się jak na taśmie filmowej? Czy pamięć jest własnością czysto indywidualną, czy możemy też mówić o pamięci zbiorowej? Pamięć o przeszłości jest jednym z nieodłącznych aspektów człowieczeństwa. Stanowi podstawę, dzięki której człowiek znajduje umocowanie w świecie, a nade wszystko w środowisku, w którym przyszło mu żyć. Społeczeństwa trwają dzięki pamięci o przeszłości przekazywanej z pokolenia na pokolenie. Problem stanowi jednak fakt, że zapamiętywana przeszłość nie jest jednorodna. To samo wydarzenie inaczej jest postrzegane przez jego uczestnika, inaczej przez osoby postronne. Jeszcze inaczej opisuje się wydarzenia z perspektywy lat. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono teoretyczne ujęcia pamięci zbiorowej według Barbary Szackiej i Andrzeja Szpocińskiego. Zaprezentowano stanowiska ww. autorów dotyczące relacji między pamięcią zbiorową a historią, omówiono perspektywy badawcze stosowane w badaniach nad pamięcią zbiorową. Zwrócono uwagę na najważniejsze funkcje pamięci o przeszłości oraz jej nośniki.
What is memory? Is it just simple recording of events which are running through our lives, recorded just as on a film tape? Is memory a purely individual possession or can we talk about collective memory as well? Memory of the past is one of the inherent aspects of humanity. It constitutes the basis, by which human finds fixing in the world and, above all, in the environment in which he or she lives. Societies last thanks to the memory of the past passed down through generations. The problem is the fact that remembered past is not homogeneous. The same event is differently perceived by its participant, and differently by outsiders. Moreover, events are described differently from the perspective of the years. This article presents theoretical recognition of collective memory, according to Barbara Szacka and Andrzej Szpociński. The positions of the above mentioned authors regarding to the relationship between collective memory and history have been presented and research prospects applied in studies on collective memory have been discussed. The attention was drawn to the most important functions of memory about the past and its carriers.

W funkcjonowaniu nauki o polityce w Polsce narasta mocne napięcie między wymogami naukowości, praktycznego nastawienia i zaprogramowania oraz regułami medialności w popularyzacji dorobku i analitycznych kompetencji politologów. Nasze środowisko nie umie sobie z tym poradzić. Politologia zachowuje naukowy charakter pod tym warunkiem, że jej funkcje poznawcze mają charakter autoteliczny, choć nie wyklucza to praktycznych zastosowań uzyskanej wiedzy. W praktyce dominują jednak wąsko utylitarne, wulgarnopragmatyczne wyobrażenia o pożytkach z nauki. Skutkiem ich narzucania przez polityków i urzędników jest redukcja poznawczych ambicji politologów, doraźny horyzont i banalizacja badań, powielanie ideologiczno-propagandowych pseudoaksjomatów, zanik krytycznej refleksji nad głębszą treścią gry politycznej. Prezentacja dorobku i kompetencji politologów w mediach przeważnie sprowadza się do bieżącego i jałowego komentatorstwa. Paradoksalnie, wykorzystanie potencjału nauk politycznych zarówno przez rządzących, jak i przez dowolne inne siły z establishmentu politycznego jest odwrotnie proporcjonalne do potrzeb społecznych i do możliwej oferty politologów.
As regards the functioning of the political science in Poland there is a strong tension growing between requirements of the scientific nature, the practical attitude and programming and convenience of media in the process of popularization of achievements and analytical competence of political scientists. The field’s experts cannot cope with this properly. The political science is able to keep its scientific nature provided that its cognitive purposes remain autotelic, although it does not rule out practical usage of the knowledge gained through the scientific process. In practice however narrowly utilitarian, vulgar-pragmatic ideas of benefits from the political science are dominating. The effect of this is the reduction in cognitive ambitions of political scientists as a result of imposing them by politicians and clerks, temporary horizons and banal level of research, repeating ideological-propaganda pseudoaxioms, the disappearance of critical reflection over the deeper content of the political game. Presentation of achievements and competence of political scientists in the media brings barren attempts at commenting current political affairs. Paradoxically, using the potential of the political science both through the class of the ruling, as well as by any other forces of the political Establishment is inversely proportional to social needs and to the available offer of political scientists.

Bogdan Walczak, full professor, doctor habilitatus and one of the most distinguished students of Professor Władysław Kuraszkiewicz. Since his graduation from the Polish Faculty of Adam Mickiewicz University in1965, he developed his career at the Poznań university where he was awarded his doctor and doctor habilitatus degrees. At the behest of the University Council of the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology he was appointed professor. Bogdan Walczak made his academic debut in 1964. Since that time, he has published over a thousand research and popular science works on various linguistic sub-disciplines, with special emphasis placed on linguistics related to the Polish and Slavic languages. The history of the general Polish language and its regional variations have been at the centre of his research. On the other hand, he has devoted a large part of his work to contemporary Polish, the culture of the Polish language and the cultural heritage enshrined in the Polish language, glottodidactics, onomastics, social linguistics and methodology of linguistic research. Professor Bogdan Walczak is also a valued academic teacher and organizer of research activities.He has received many awards, including the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Medal of the Commission ofNational Education for his remarkable research and academic achievements and for his organizational work,which has been of such importance to his alma mater.In 2012, when he retired, he was granted the esteemed title of senior professor of Adam Mickiewicz Universityin Poznań.

Przed artykułem postawiono potrójny cel: 1) identyfikacja funkcji spełnianych przez czasopisma naukowe w systemie nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce; 2) diagnoza i ocena spełniania funkcji ewaluacyjnej przez obecny system ewaluacji czasopism – krytyczna analiza obowiązujących rozwiązań; 3) zarysowanie kierunków ewolucji systemu ewaluacji czasopism w Polsce. Jeśli chodzi o stronę metodyczną to wiodącą rolę odegrała krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu oraz krytyczna analiza i ocena obowiązujących regulacji prawnych. Ponadto w prowadzonych rozważaniach wykorzystano elementy podejścia diagnostycznego (opis i ocena dotychczasowych rozwiązań) oraz prognostycznego/prospektywnego (zarys propozycji zmian dotychczasowych rozwiązań). Dodatkowo w pracy zastosowana została metoda analizy dogmatycznoprawnej przepisów prawa, pozwalająca na krytyczną ocenię zamiarów ustawodawcy.
A triple goal was set for this article: (i) identifying the functions fulfilled by scientific journals in the system of science and higher education in Poland; (ii) diagnosis and assessment of the performance of the evaluation function by the current system of journal evaluation – a critical analysis of the applicable solutions; (iii) outlining the directions of the evolution of the journal evaluation system in Poland. As far as the methodology is concerned, a critical analysis of the literature on the subject as well as a critical analysis and evaluation of applicable legal regulations played a leading role. Moreover, elements of the diagnostic approach (the description and assessment of existing solutions) and the prognostic / prospective approach (an outline of proposed changes to existing solutions) were used in the considerations. Additionally, the work uses the method of legal and dogmatic analysis of legal provisions, which allows for a critical assessment of the legislator's intentions.

Zdolność pisania skryptów nauk ścisłych w przejrzysty i ciekawy sposób jest bardzo wymagającym zadaniem, ale w osiągnięciu tego celu autorowi może pomóc stosowanie licznych metatekstemów. Z ich pomocą mogą stworzyć artykuł przyjazny odbiorcy. Te konstrukcje mają różne zastosowania, o których naukowcy często zapominają, skupiając się przede wszystkim na przedstawieniu wyników swoich badań. Metatekstemy pomagają autorowi m.in. w poukładaniu i przedstawieniu ich toku myślenia, w informowaniu odbiorcy o podjętych przez autora krokach i jego opinii co do wprowadzanych informacji. Za pomocą środków metajęzykowych naukowcy mogą podkreślić najważniejsze informacje w tekście i powoływać się na badania innych autorów, a co najważniejsze, pomagają one nawiązać relację z czytelnikiem. Środki te mają wiele różnorodnych funkcji i w niniejszym artykule prezentujemy ich rolę w skryptach nauk ścisłych wraz z ich charakterystyką i przykładami. Autorzy tekstów naukowych powinni zwracać więcej uwagi na język i konstrukcje, których używają w swoich tekstach, ponieważ w ten sposób wpływają na czytelnika i jego wrażenia, a także jego stosunek odnośnie do zaprezentowanych w tekście danych i nas jako autora.
Ability to write Natural Science textbooks in a clear and interesting manner is a very demanding task, but the use of numerous metatextemes can help the authors to achieve it. With the application of metatextemes they can create a recipient-friendly article. These constructions have various functions, but the scientists often forget about them and concentrate mostly on showing the results of their analysis. Metatextemes help the authors e.g. to organise and present their line of thoughts, and to inform the recipient about the steps undertaken by the author and their attitude to the information they present. With the use of these metaoperators the researchers can highlight the most important information in the text and refer to research of other scientists and most of all, they help to establish a relationship with the reader. These measures have many different functions, and in this article we present their role in academic books on Natural Sciences with their characteristics and examples. The authors of scientific texts should pay more attention to the language and constructions they use in their texts, because in this way they influence the reader and their impressions and also their attitude towards data presented in the text and to their author.
