    The aim of the herein paper is to present the processes of managing science and technology parks by means of indicating their essence, types and domains of activities. Moreover, the attributes of these parks were emphasized in the context of the innovative processes. Pilot research was conducted which concentrated on the institutionalization and functionality of the science and technology parks which facilitated the formulation of conclusions relating to the cooperation between enterprises, science and technology parks and the sphere of science in terms of innovativeness.

    Parki naukowo-technologiczne służą wspieraniu innowacji, które mają zdynamizować rozwój lokalny. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie działalności Pomorskiego Parku Naukowo-Technologicznego (PPNT) Gdynia. Wykorzystując podejście indukcyjne, bazując na wynikach analizy opracowań naukowych, dokumentów planistycznych, sprawozdań z działalności oraz informacji zawartych na stronach internetowych parku i funkcjonujących w nim przedsiębiorstw, dokonano charakterystyki podmiotów, infrastruktury będącej do ich dyspozycji oraz usług biznesowych oferowanych przez park. W PPNT w 2015 roku działało 208 podmiotów. Najliczniej reprezentowane były przedsiębiorstwa o profilu teleinformatycznym, zajmujące się automatyką i robotyką oraz działające w branży biotechnologii i wzornictwa przemysłowego. Stosując metodę studium przypadku, bardziej szczegółowo omówiono działalność podmiotów, które mają stosunkowo silne powiązania z partnerami zagranicznymi. Ich rozwojowi sprzyjają usługi oferowane przez park oraz jego infrastruktura. Usługi obejmują m.in. kompleksowe wsparcie dla absolwentów rozpoczynających działalność gospodarczą, doradztwo, wykonanie badań laboratoryjnych, szkolenia, a także pomoc w nawiązywaniu współpracy. Na infrastrukturę, oprócz powierzchni biurowych, składają się laboratoria biotechnologiczne, elektroniczne, wzorcownie, sale konferencyjne, a także miejsca sprzyjające kontaktom społecznym i nieformalnemu sieciowaniu. Rozwój parku jest także efektem sprzyjającego mu otoczenia. Powstaje zatem pytanie, które czynniki mają decydujące znaczenie dla rozwoju przedsiębiorstw działających w parku – oferowana w nim infrastruktura i usługi czy korzyści aglomeracji, jakie oferuje duże miasto.
    Science and technology parks are to facilitate innovation and contribute to more dynamic local development. The article aims at giving a closer look at the operation of the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park in Gdynia. By applying an inductive approach, relying on results of scientific studies, planning documentation, activity reports, the Park’s website and those companies operating on the premises a profile was developed of the entities, the infrastructure at their disposal and business related services provided by the Park. There were 208 entities in the Park in 2015. Companies involved in infocommunication, automatic control and robotics dominate in the Park.By applying case study method, gave the closer look at operations ofover a dozen feature relatively strong relations with foreign partners. Business development, including international relations is fostered by services provided by the Park and the available infrastructure. Services cover, among others, comprehensive support for graduates launching their businesses, advisory services, performance of laboratory tests, training, as well as assistance in establishing relations. The infrastructure, apart from office space, includes biotechnology and electronic laboratories, calibration facilities, conference halls as well as space for social contacts and networking. A favourable environment also contributes to the Park’s development. The question arises, therefore, which factors are critical for the development of the Park’s enterprises – infrastructure and services provided by the park or rather economies of agglomeration offered by the large city.

    Parki naukowo-technologiczne (PNT) odgrywają coraz większą rolę w gospodarce opartej na wiedzy i przyczyniają się do zachodzenia istotnych przemian w środowisku innowacyjnym. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie miejsca, jakie zajmują w innowacyjnym środowisku regionalnym. Autorka rozpoczyna rozważania od przedstawienia krótkiej charakterystyki PNT, by kolejno przejść do opisu modeli ich funkcjonowania. Szczególne miejsce w artykule poświęcono analizie firm zorientowanych na tworzenie nowych technologii, które są lokalizowane w PNT. Autorka stara się wskazać, jak ich stale wzrastające znaczenie przyczynia się do zwiększenia dynamiki rozwojowej środowiska innowacyjnego. Jedną z konsekwencji tego działania jest poprawa efektywności lokalnej ekonomii, na której powinno zależeć wszystkim funkcjonującym na danym obszarze interesariuszom.
    In the knowledge-based economy the role of science and technology parks (STP), as one of the forces actively contributing to the significant changes occurring in the innovative environment, is constantly expanding. The main aim of the article is to show the position of STP within the regional innovative environment. The Author starts the article from presenting the short characteristics of the science and technology parks. Then, the models of their activity are broadly described. The special attention has been stressed on new technology based firms located within science and technology parks. The Author tries to present how their constantly growing role boosts the dynamics of the innovative environment. One of the consequences of such activities is accelerating the growth of the local economy, which should be the pivotal issue for all the stakeholders involved.

    Opis:
    Among the ways to bridge the gap between the research communities and the industry, one of the best known are the Science and Technology Parks. The scope of the offered services, the scale of operations and their revenues vary considerably. The largest parks gather companies, whose revenues may reach billions of dollars. Achieving such success requires, from the park operators, much more than offering attractive prices for office space. Moreover, it requires well-coordinated activities, based on a long term vision, from the central governments. The paper presents an analysis of the factors determining the success or fiasco of science and technology parks, both in worldwide and Polish context.
    Wśród sprawdzonych na świecie sposobów zbudowania mostu między instytucjami naukowymi a przemysłem są parki naukowo-technologiczne. Skala ich funkcjonowania, zakres usług, osiągane przychody są bardzo zróżnicowane. Największe parki gromadzą firmy o przychodach idących w dziesiątki miliardów dolarów. Osiągnięcie takiego sukcesu wymaga od operatorów parku znacznie więcej niż atrakcyjnych warunków wynajmu powierzchni użytkowej. Co więcej, wymaga skoordynowanych, długofalowych działań na poziomie władz centralnych. Artykuł przedstawia próbę analizy czynników wpływających na sukces lub porażkę parków, zarówno w kontekście światowym jak polskim.

    Purpose – The paper is intended to identify the role and activity of universities in building up business environment infrastructure in Poland. It analyses centres that support innovation processes and entrepreneurship co-established by higher education institutions, such as technology and academic incubators, technology transfer centres, and science and technology parks. Research method – The research methods include: a critical analysis of subject-matter literature, the analysis of the existing data (reports and expert opinions), and three casual interviews with leaders of innovation and entrepreneurship centres in Poland. Results – After a period of dynamic development (which ended in 2012), the number of business support institutions is declining. The trend is observed, in particular, amongst technology parks and incubators. On the other hand, the engagement of universities in the development of technology transfer centres is growing while the population of university start-up incubators remains stable. The number and power of entrepreneurship and innovation support centres are strongly correlated with the economic strength of regions and their position as academic centres. University and business collaboration has been expanding together with the density of regional relationships. Originality / value – The article assesses the state and quality of operation of the academic business environment and its transformation in the last decade.

    In modern economy knowledge and innovations are key factors for competetive position of an enterprise. We observe a growing need of building and supporting relationsbetween science and business and of creating initiatives for supporting the transition of ideas and exchange of information and knowledge. Actions concerning this area also enclose the formation and development of specialized institutions for business support. Observations show the increasing importance of innovation and entrepeneurship centers. The paper presents results of the questionnaire survey of innoation ceters in Greater Poland, which was aimed at presenting the state the recognizability of these institutions, the type of activity, with which they are associated, the quality of information presented by these institutions and the knowledge, to which they give access.
