Opis:
Contemporary dimension of religious, socio-cultural situation in Europe implies the need for the positive perception of the persons of different faiths. The perception of the religious otherness as a value may (through mutual exchange and synthesis of spiritual values intrinsic for whole Christian community and encounter with positive values of other religions) enrich religious identity with the aspect of openness.Young people tirelessly search for their own identity and, thus, confirm the need for religious education which enhances the formation of religious identity. Tasks of school religious education in the context of forming the open religious identity comprise both acquiring knowledge about one’s own religion and church, religious formation and also the knowledge about religious pluralism; the perception of the religiously other as the value; reflexive approach to religious questions and the development of positive attitudes toward the religious otherness. The author attempts to find the answer to the question whether and to what extent the religious education enhances the creation of open religious identity of young people.
Współczesny wymiar religijny rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej Europy implikuje potrzebę pozytywnego postrzegania osób/grup odmiennych religijnie. Postrzeganie Inności religijnej jako wartości może – poprzez wzajemną wymianę i scalanie wartości duchowych będących wspólnym dobrem chrześcijaństwa, a w kontekście różnych religii poprzez mediację między wartościami chrześcijańskimi i pozytywnymi wartościami innych religii – wzbogacać tożsamość religijną o aspekt otwartości.Młodzi ludzie usilnie poszukują własnej tożsamości, stąd edukacja religijna młodzieży powinna stymulować kształtowanie tożsamości religijnej. Zadania edukacji religijnej w kontekście kształtowania otwartej tożsamości religijnej obejmują zarówno nabywanie wiedzy o własnej religii i Kościele, formację religijną, jak i wiedzę na temat pluralizmu religijnego, postrzeganie zróżnicowania religijnego jako wartości, refleksyjne podejście do kwestii religijnych i rozwijanie pozytywnych postaw wobec Inności religijnej. Autorka stawia pytanie: czy i w jakim stopniu szkolna edukacja religijna wspomaga kształtowanie otwartej tożsamości religijnej młodzieży.

The aim of this article is to present the results of our own survey in the field of religious socialization, which are a part of broader research issues on how religious sanctity is understood and located in one’s religious awareness; we researched the perception and evaluation of holy life, of people who are considered saints and possible desire to follow them in their own life by high school graduates. Studies were carried out in 2010 on a representative sample of 1841 high school graduates living and studying in Lublin Voivodeship. For the purpose of this article, we have divided the issues regarding education and teaching religious principles into three parts: the first part covers respondents’ statements about “religious atmosphere” in the family as demonstrated by discussions on religious topics in their families; the second part includes young people’s opinions about religious education; in the third part teachers speak about the presence of religious education at school and its role in shaping the students’ worldview.

Opis:
The basic determinant of a public school as a social and educational environment should be the promotion of social inclusion and cohesion. In most countries of the European Union, religious instruction is a subject of school education. These countries adopt different models in terms of legal legitimacy, organization and curriculum. The idea of introducing religion as a compulsory subject appeared in Poland. Non-public schools, i.e. a school run by social, religious or privat units, have the right to special curricular solutions. A public school, i.e. a school free of charge and available to every student, regardless of their worldview, should conduct religious education in the spirit of dialogue and social cohesion as an element of general education. This article presents a comparative analysis of religious education in public schools from the perspective of the relationship between religious particularism and general education. I assume that in individual countries both religious particularism and general education may be defined differently in the context of school education.

Polish pedagogical thought of the interwar period pointed out the importance of forming the citizens’ attitude towards the state.. Cultivation of pro-state attitudes was closely related to the propagation of work ethos. Those educational actions were also undertaken in schools, among others, in the course of religious education. The concept of work was presented in such a way as to show the pupils the value of work, evoke positive attitudes towards their chosen professions, encourage them to work honestly and responsibly, to form a mature personality expressed by the quality of their performed work. All those actions were aimed at strengthening the power and welfare of the state. For that reason, work was perceived in the categories of a patriotic duty. In a way, it was similar to what we call work patriotism in our society these days

Opis:
Pomimo powracającej z różną częstotliwością i nasileniem krytyki nauczania religii w szkole większość´ polskiego społeczeństwa, w tym uczniów i rodziców, popiera obecność katechezy w szkole. Zdecydowana większość dzieci i młodzieży uczestniczy w lekcjach religii.
The reintroduction of Religious Education to state schools in 1990 was accepted by the majority of the Polish society. However, it also met the objection and indignation of some of the political powers. The opponents of the idea thought that catechization at school breached a secular character of state schools. Despite the recurring criticism of RE teaching (of various frequency and intensity), the majority of the Polish society, including school goers and their parents, support catechization at school. The vast majority of children and youngsters participate in RE classes and the opinions on the quality of teaching are stable. School goers declare that they participate in the classes because they are interesting or because they treat RE like any other subject. Some of the school goers, however, think that the classes are boring.

Opis:
Hubertus Halbfas is an educationalist of religion, well-known not only in Germany. Polish catechetics only partly knows his research-didactic work. The article contains the first description of his life as a scientist and a complete list of his publications in the Polish language. It introduces the reader into the context of the development of catechetics/pedagogy of religion in Germany, and it indicates selected trends in Halbfas’s work. Halbfas’s thought that every human being has an inner desire to “transcend himself/herself’ and to experience ever new dimensions of his/her life, is a constant challenge to work out new programs of religious education. His didactic-symbolic conception tries to restore the lost narrative ability of religious experience to scholarly didactics, and although it contains many controversial elements, it is a challenge for modern educationists of religion and catechists in every cultural area.

The goal of this article is to present a school operating as part of the Cistercian abbey in Szczyrzyc. In the 18th century, some Cistercian abbeys assumed the responsibility of establishing and managing elementary schools. It was also the case in Poland provided that the legislation of the respective empire (Russia, Prussia or Austria) allowed for such arrangements. The abbey in Szczyrzyc was in charge of the school facilities and competent teachers. While some of them were the local monks, a respective state authority supervised adherence to the curriculum. The first existing source of information about the school at the Cistercian abbey in Szczyrzyc comes from 1780. Despite numerous obstacles related to the political situation in the partitioned Poland, the abbey educated the local children continuously albeit more or less successfully until the middle of the 20th century, involving the monks in the education process. ABSTRACT RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the paper is to redefine “confessionality” in religious education in Austrian schools, regarding to changing circumstances. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODOLOGY: The paper describes the history of confessional religious education in Austria, which gets several problems in different school-situations. In some schools, there are 8 and more sorts of confessional religious education. After the description of possible alternatives, a proposal of redefining confessional education is presented. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The paper starts with an overview of the history and the actual situation of religious education in Austrian schools. Currently 13 recognised religions and denominations in Austria provide religious education. In some situations religious education becomes impossible due to insufficient student numbers. So the state and religious communities will have to try and establish new models of teaching. The main part of the paper consists of pros and cons in the conceptual considerations of confessionality. RESEARCH RESULTS: It is a challenge to rethink confessional religious education: religious communities will have to take joint responsibility and provide religious education as a service to students with clear denominational features. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: There are three first steps very necessary in the next future: Commitment of the religious communities to religious education; a new concept to try at several locations; practical support concerning multi-religious events.

This article studies the development of soft skills in religious education lessons in Slovakia. At present, the educational system focuses on the acquisition of knowledge in the form of hard skills instead of developing soft skills. However, soft skills are life necessities in the 21st century. Religious education, which is currently defined as the development of religious literacy, represents a meaningful space for the personal development of pupils, and the development of soft skills, which can be beneficial for their personal and professional life. According to research among religious education teachers, we can affirm that soft skills are included in the lessons. Nevertheless, while teachers have more developed effective management and communication skills, they lack the ability to support cooperative and independent learning.

Piarist Order
history of education
school education
Opis:
The organisation of Piarist schools in the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania was mainly based on the provisions of the Piarist Order costitutions drawn by Joseph Calasanz. Part II titled „Constitutionum Congregationis Regularium Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum” virtually focused on the education system. It set no rigid rules of teaching but gave the teacher a great deal of leeway in the selection of both the class topics and recommended reading. Calasanz’s constitutions were usually published in full by the specific provinces of the Order. In subsequent editions their contents were not changed but supplemented by further provisions set by the General Chapter and provincial chapters. This was in compliance with the assumptions adopted by Calasanz who took account of self-dependent actions in various provinces subject to the local opportunities and needs. Therefore the organisation of Piarist school system differed from one another in the provinces which may have made the impression of the lack of a normative document standardising operation of the Order educational units. Such a solution was, however, in compliance with the Piarist authorities’ assumptions. Each edition of the Order constitution in particular provinces contained the basic recommendations by Calasanz (which were finally revised by the General Chapter in 1694 and published by the superior general Joannes Franciscus Foci in Rome in 1698) and subsequent decisions by the General Chapter and the chapters of former provinces regarding the schools system organisation, selection of things to be taught and reading. The discretion in the organisation of schools, reading selection and openness to novelties or even experiments presumably allowed the Order to lay the foundations for the subsequent great reforms in a spirit of the Enlightenment in the territory of the then Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. Presumably, the Piarist „ratio studiorum” enabled the Order to overtake, in the 18th century, other orders topped by the Society of Jesus who had played a leading role in that field amongst Catholics until the middle of the 18th century. In the period in question, the prime educational task of the Piarist schools and other units connected with the Catholic Church was the education of the youth in piety which was intended to protect boys from the perpetration of misdeed. It was a common view that teaching itself, disregarding ‘the fear of God’ is incapable of producing desired educational effects. During lessons, teachers did not confine themselves to deliver the curriculum contents but they were supposed to mould a passion of the students for religion and virtue so as to make them being ‘intense members of the Catholic Church and the pride of society’. All student of the Piarist schools had to attend Holy Mass every day and on Sundays and festive occasions they had to take part in two services. Students who failed to do so were punished. Newcomers to schools were obliged to make their confession and receive Communion. Students sang litanies every Saturday at 3 p.m. During oratory services elder students, who were members of religious brotherhoods, listened to homilies while younger ones listened to catechism excerpts. In the Piarist schools everything began, was conducted, and ended ‘in the name of God and for the sake of His holy glory’.
