Abstract: The human being meets the idea of infinity very early, still a child, when he  realises that he can go on counting using  natural numbers until it is impossible to continue to count. The idea of infinity attracts and rejects, sometimes becomes an  object of desire and sometimes of study and systematic research. Infinity is the testimony that intellect, even starting from experience, can overcome limits and boundaries. Our own limited experience on the Earth suggests the existence of something beyond it. Scientists, artists, philosophers, musicians, writers, mathematicians have often assumed towards this concept positions and opinions sensitively different. Infinity would be, by its etymology and nature, what escapes all possible classification and measurement, while mathematics tends to classify and measure every object it examines, and  has been able to measure it. Infinity follows us from primary school until university, but often remains a misunderstood concept in the mathematical sense.

Stanisław Saks (1897-1942) urodził się w Kaliszu w zasymilowanej rodzinie żydowskiej. Studiował w Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, gdzie w 1922 uzyskał stopień doktora, a w roku 1926 habilitował się. Od 1927 pracował w Uniwersytecie. Był jednym z najzdolniejszych młodszych matematyków i wykładowców, choć nie został profesorem. W pamięć swych uczniów i współpracowników zapadł jako człowiek wielkiego uroku.
Stanisław Saks the alumnus of the Warsaw mathematics school Stanisław Saks (1897-1942) was born in Kalisz in the assimilated Jewish family. He studied at the University of Warsaw, where in 1922 he received a doctor’s degree and in 1926 was habilitated. From 1927 he worked at the University. He was one of the most talented junior mathematicians and lecturers, although he did not become a professor. On his students’ and associates’ memory he had his name engraved as a man of great charm.

Przedwojenne kadry akademickie w Polsce, znacznie uszczuplone przez II wojnę światową, nie były w stanie w pełni zaspokoić potrzeb szybko rozrastającego się szkolnictwa wyższego po 1945 roku. W tej sytuacji z pomocą przyszli przedwojenni nauczyciele szkół średnich. Artykuł omawia tę sytuację na przykładzie matematyki,przytaczając losy ponad czterdziestu takich osób i na tej podstawie formułując parę uwag ogólnych.
 Pre-war academic staff in Poland, seriously curtailed during World War II, could not meet satisfactorily post-war demands of quickly expanding academic schools. Help has been provided by the pre-war school teachers. The article describes the situation in the field of mathematics, offering fates of over 40 school teachers of mathematics who joined universities and polytechnics, and giving some general remarks.

Mimo nierzadko napiętych stosunków politycznych Polski i ZSRR, matematycy z obu krajów nie stronili od wzajemnych kontaktów. Polskie władze takich możliwości nie ograniczały, a radzieckie do połowy lat trzydziestych też nie czyniły tego w szerszym zakresie. Rosjanie pisywali do polskich czasopism, współpracowali z tutejszymi matematykami przy organizacji i prowadzeniu badań naukowych, gościli na polskich uczelniach jako wykładowcy i stypendyści, uczestniczyli w zjazdach tu organizowanych. Polskich matematyków również zapraszano z tych powodów na uczelnie ZSRR. Nierzadko nawzajem wspierano się także w kwestiach pozanaukowych.

In the paper I try to describe the phenomenon of the Polish School of Mathematics. It requires the presentation and analysis of the many factors that have had an influence on its creation and development. It is impossible to do so in such article yet I try to show, however, its essence and strength through an analysis up until the point that World War II brutally ended its development. I focus on the mathematicians who were forced to emigrate and created important mathematical centres in other countries. Thus, the program and atmosphere of Polish Mathematical School was continued.

Aim. The aim of this study is to analyse the conducted studies in order to reveal the effect of the strategies, methods and techniques used in elementary school mathematics courses, to apply critical strategies based on impartiality, and to critically evaluate and synthesize them. Methods. In this systematic review study, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement was used in order to prepare the systematic review protocol. The studies were based on students’ achievement resulting from student-centred strategy, methods and techniques. Results. The results of the study show that the number of participants of the primary studies centred on the range of 31- 60 to 90 and above. Moreover, the total number of studies conducted in different countries constitutes a significant proportion of the studies included. In most of the studies (f=87), significant differences were found in favour of the experimental group.              Conclusion. Within the framework of the inclusion criteria of the research, it can be concluded that student-centred strategy methods and techniques statistically change the students' mathematics achievement. Among these methods and techniques, Realistic Mathematics Education, Computer Assisted Teaching Method, and Collaborative Learning Method were prominent.

Aim: An analysis and comparison of selected journals in terms of the tools used to create and influence the worldview of the two most numerous groups of teachers: Polish philologists and mathematicians. Methods: An analysis of selected pedagogical and subject journals from the analyzed period. Results: Indication of the types of texts used for the indoctrination of teachers’ worldview and a short description of them. Conclusions: There are many materials prepared for the Polish language teachers. Moreover, their subject was considered as useful for creating a “new man”. On the other side, mathematics is the subject that rarely appears in texts in the context of ideological indoctrination.

In contemporary concepts of school education one suggests a far-reaching integration of teaching contents. The integration is aimed to help school children to gain a comprehensive world picture, stimulate their activeness, develop some creative attitudes of the school children toward mathematics and elaborate various forms of organizing classes. According to the experience with integrating mathematics with other teaching subjects, there are difficulties in realizing the aims mentioned above. In this article some reasons for these difficulties will be discussed at large.

This text contributes to the debate on the change in the way of teaching mathematics as it responds to the shifts caused by the transition to distance learning during the pandemic. The author analyses the conclusions of contemporary publications and international research alongside teaching experiences related to various aspects of the functioning of mathematics teachers, the efficacy and quality of their work as well as the issue of their education and improvement. In the course of literature research, probing questions on the pandemic-era school failures occurring in mathematics have clearly highlighted inequalities in the education system. The author analyses the application of ICT in distance learning, which has significantly stimulated processes and phenomena linked to the functioning of an individual in schooling. The time of the pandemic has exposed the shortcomings of the Polish education system and necessitated reflection on the future of Polish schooling. When the magnitude of failures in mathematics does not decrease but remains constant, it is imperative that the reason why it is the leading subject of school failures is determined. Therefore, it is important to establish the new role of the mathematics teacher in the process of changes prompted by distance learning.

Between 11–14 February 2021 the first international Philosophical Workshop organized by The Lvov–Warsaw School Research Center (LWSRC) and Kazimierz Twardowski Philosophical Society of Lviv (KTPSL) took place in the on–line version due to the ongoing COVID–19 pandemic. The working languages of the event were Polish, Ukrainian and English. The coordinators’ goal was to refer to the tradition of seminar of Kazimierz Twardowski, who was not only a distinguished philosopher but also a great educator, to stimulate interest and support for the young generation of researchers into the heritage of the Lvov–Warsaw School (LWS). It is claimed that due to Twardowski’s  unprecedented didactical engagement he managed to upbring dozens of Professors like Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz,  Stefan Baley, Leopold Blaustein, Tadeusz Czeżowski, Izydora Dąmbska, Tadeusz Kotarbiński,  tanisław Leśniewski, Jan Łukasiewicz, Władysław Witwicki.

Opis:
The authors substantiate the expediency of using video lessons and their fragments in the process of forming future teachers’ professional competency. The elaborated library includes video recordings of real mathematics lessons at primary school and videos of pupils solving certain types of problems with full commentaries, structured by classes and topics. The methods of using the video library by educators in the field Methods of Teaching Mathematics in Primary School and students majoring in specialty 013 Primary Education were developed. The effectiveness of using the video library as a means of teaching the course Methods of Teaching Mathematics in Primary School was verified experimentally by introducing it into the educational process of three Ukrainian universities.
W artykule uzasadniono celowość wykorzystania nagrań lekcji i/lub ich fragmentów w procesie kształtowania kompetencji zawodowych przyszłych nauczycieli. Utworzono bibliotekę wideo, która zawiera filmy prezentujące lekcje matematyki w szkole podstawowej oraz filmy instruktażowe dotyczące rozwiązywania określonych rodzajów zadań przez uczniów, a także komentarze metodyczne i merytoryczne, ułożone według klas i tematów. Opracowano strategię wykorzystania biblioteki wideo dla nauczycieli nauczania matematyki w szkole podstawowej oraz program szkolenia nauczycieli w zakresie edukacji matematyki w szkole podstawowej. Skuteczność wykorzystania biblioteki wideo jako środka do studiowania kursu „Metody nauczania matematyki w szkole podstawowej” została potwierdzona eksperymentalnie poprzez trzy uniwersytety w Ukrainie, które włączyły ten kurs do programu studiów.

Mathematics-related beliefs play an important role in giving a teacher directions for taking decisions and for their behavior in a mathematics class. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to reveal the profile of teachers’ mathemat- ics-related beliefs, the consistency among belief dimensions, teachers’ practical profile in a mathematics class, and the consistency between beliefs and teachers’ practices in a mathematics class. This research used surveys with a cross-sec- tional design to collect data from 325 elementary school teachers in Jakarta. Teachers’ beliefs instruments and teachers’ practices in mathematics class were used to collect data. The findings of this research indicate that teachers tend to be constructivism-oriented but are not accompanied with suitable practices in mathematics class. Moreover, complex relationships also occur in both belief dimensions and in their relationships with the practices in a mathematics class.
