Opis:
Historically there have been inequities in access to school in South Africa. Differences in languages have also contributed to difficulties. In the present study a Grade One class was observed for a term as they entered formal schooling. Cultural psychology was used as the method, developing a description of the context and narrowing the observations to ten and then five children. Five school homes visits were done and one of these case studies is described here. Given the socio-economic literacy context, the child did extremely well, being self-motivated and supported by an aware single parent. The usefulness of the Cultural Psychological method is described.

The paper deals with an individual’s nature relatedness and a selected significant variable which may have an effect on it; especially it researches the studied high school relation to nature relatedness in primary school teacher trainees. It is research in quantitative design, using a questionnaire to collect data. The questionnaire was based on the Nature Relatedness Scale. Results show a significant effect of the type of high school finished on students’ nature relatedness. The highest scores in the construct analysed were obtained in nature and science- oriented branches, the lowest by graduates of social sciences and general grammar schools. Such results confirm the significance of education in natural science in forming a positive attitude to nature and disprove the cliché ideas of polytechnics producing environmentally insensitive graduates.

This study aimed to evaluate Polish school principals’ coronavirus-related health literacy (HL) level and explore the respondents’ feelings in the context of the pandemic media information overload. The survey was conducted in 8 out of 16 provinces in Poland between June 2021 and December 2021 using an online questionnaire. Research revealed that the most challenging for Polish school principals was judging the reliability of the media-based information about COVID-19. Moreover, respondents’ coronavirus-related HL was positively associated with feeling well-informed about the pandemic and less confused concerning media information about coronavirus. Enhancing school principals’ HL is recommended, as it can positively affect the entire school community through health-oriented leadership behaviour and prevent an infodemic, facilitating school management and making the right decisions.

Considering the current conditions in environmental education and training in Europe and the world, it is essential to put emphasis on the increase of the environmental literacy of pupils in the educational environment. The paper presents findings of the conducted research focused on the regional identity in relation to environmental literacy of pupils. The empirical research was of a quantitative-qualitative character. The subject of the research was the level of environmental literacy of pupils of primary education and selected aspects in its development in educational process. The research was conducted in 630 schools from all over Slovakia. In the paper we focus mainly on the findings obtained from questionnaires completed by primary education pupils and from interviews carried out by teachers. The research findings highlight the need of pupils for direct contact with nature with regard to the improvement of their level of environmental literacy.

This literature review presents a critical appraisal of current research on the role technology integration plays in high school students’ literacy achievement. It identifies the gaps within the research through comprehensive analysis. The review develops an argument that the use of laptops in secondary English classrooms has a significant impact upon students’ literacy achievement in both a positive and negative manner. The literature review begins by exploring early research and finds that there is a lack of longitudinal studies regarding laptop integration. This is a result of the trend at the time, which was to focus on the impact on student and teacher attitudes rather than the impact on literacy. Through the critical appraisal of current research it is revealed that the attitudes and beliefs of individual teachers to laptop integration is the leading cause of student literacy achievement. The literature review progresses to explore the challenges facing educators and the concerns for educators.

This quantitative study investigates digital literacy disparities among high school students when studying physics in various educational environments, specifically contrasting penggerak and non-penggerak schools and urban versus rural settings. Utilising a cross-sectional survey methodology with a sample size of 330 students, the research evaluates competencies across four key dimensions of digital literacy. The findings reveal pronounced disparities, with students in penggerak and urban settings exhibiting superior digital literacy. These results emphasise the necessity of enhancing digital resources and literacy programmes in under-resourced schools to equalise educational opportunities and prepare students effectively for the digital future.

The article introduces the issue of a crisis of literary criticism in Poland in the 20th and 21st centuries. The crisis is linked to the spheres of culture described by the term literacy (or cultural literacy). One of the reasons for the crisis is the series of ruptures in the tradition of literary criticism. In order to overcome this crisis, it is crucial to relate the ruptured threads of narration on literary criticism. The Krakow school of literary criticism serves here as an example of a rupture between the present and the tradition (or heritage). Another problem analysed in the text is that of establishing a tradition and a school of thought. By verifying some of the elements of the discourse on literary criticism (e.g. Masters, ruptures, traces, melancholic position), some possibilities for overcoming the crisis are being considered.

Opis:
Obligatory Polish middle school exams taking place just before the end of the last compulsory common stage of education provide the opportunity to reveal the level of pupils’ literacy. The acquisition of literacy defines the manner in which reality is perceived and how people participate in social life. In the article the following problem is addressed: To what degree do the Polish middle school exams diagnose the literacy of youth and to what extent can their results be of use to pedagogues? The analysis of documentation concerning exams from the years 2012–2016 indicates that the significant skills building literacy fall beyond the scope of diagnosis or are tested in such a way as to raise doubts. Thus exams provide limited information on the level of young people’s literacy.

The main topic of this paper is the issue of the development of scientific literacy of students in the field of pre-school and elementary school pedagogy. Seventeen workshops on STEAM and Media Literacy, involving 500 children aged 3-10, their families and other community members, in a pandemic context, was the end result of the third phase of the ‘Digital Citizenship Academy’. This community-based action research project began in early 2015, in a Lisbon neighbourhood of Portugal. The workshops were planned, implemented, monitored and assessed by 29 teachers during an online training initially planned to be developed on site. Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, teachers implemented strategies to overcome the lack of resources and autonomy of many students, especially younger ones, and the training focus remained on the production of scientific, artistic, technological, but also media content. The workshops allowed the creation of media and STEAM products primarily focused on the arts, but in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics were present. Results point to the fact that STEAM projects gain in relevance when associated with Media Literacy activities, and vice versa. Although there is a general feeling that the situation resulting from the pandemic prevented the achievement of more significant results, the training course was suitable to pedagogical practices, provided an opportunity for sharing of experiences, practices and ideas, fostered cooperation and interdisciplinary, and resulted in useful resources.

Artykuł stanowi syntetyczne przedstawienie założeń i wyników badania PISA. Omówione są metodologia badania, sposób jego przeprowadzania, formy zadań. Szczególną uwagę poświęca się dziedzinie głównej z roku 2018, czyli rozumieniu czytanego tekstu. Zostały wyjaśnione podstawowe pojęcia związane z tekstem, sytuacją czytelnika, aktem lektury. W dalszej części omówiono wyniki, z uwzględnieniem pozostałych dziedzin (matematyka, nauki przyrodnicze), zmian w ujęciu historycznym oraz porównań z innymi krajami. Przedstawione zostały również wyniki badań kontekstowych, które dają możliwość przyjrzenia się klimatowi polskiej szkoły, sposobom nauczania, dobrostanowi uczniów. Na koniec została przedstawiona propozycja interpretacji wyników.
The article is a synthetic presentation of the assumptions and results of the PISA study. The article discuses methodology of assessment, ways of doing it and forms of tasks. Particular attention is paid to the main field from the year 2018, i.e. the under standing of the text being read. Basic concepts related to the text, the situation of the reader, and the act of reading were explained. The following sections discuss the results, ta king into account other areas (mathematics, life sciences), historical changes and comparisons with other countries. The results of contextual research were also presented, which give the opportunity to examine the climate of Polish schools, teaching methods, and students’ well-being. Finally, a proposal for the interpretation of the results is presented.

The contribution presents partial results of research aimed to find out students’ evaluation opinions of their own knowledge and experience for development of children’s language and literary literacy in kindergartens and children’s school clubs and to point out differences in self-evaluation, depending on the length and the form of the study. The research sample consisted of 98% of students of the full-time and part-time study programme of Pre-School and Elementary Pedagogy, 228 in total. An 11-item questionnaire of our own design was used in the research. In the items P5 - P11, students expressed their subjective evaluation opinion of their knowledge and experience on a five-point scale. Research results showed that students’ self-evaluation of knowledge and experience in language and literary literacy depends on both the length and the form of their study1.

Aim. The aim of the article is to investigate how energy topics are presented in the geography curriculum in Lithuania and how school geography becomes an educational response to the current global challenges related to energy production and consumption. Methods. The article presents research using several methods: review of literature on energy geography and energy literacy, analysis of Lithuanian national curriculum for geography, content analysis of 14 geography textbooks for forms 6–12, expert interview with 9 geography teachers. Results. The empirical research reveals that the national curriculum and textbooks still represent the old energy paradigm with a profound focus on fossil fuel and nuclear energy resources. Meanwhile, the new energy paradigm is realised in the teaching of experienced and qualified teachers who, in addition to the new green energy economy, emphasise environmental and social issues of energy use. Conclusions. The conclusions include observations on necessary changes in teaching energy geography: on the one hand, by revising the formal curriculum and textbooks and integrating concepts of energy literature and new energy developments; on the other hand, by initiating changes in primary and continuous teacher education. Professional development of teachers could include new energy topics, new teaching and learning sources (political debates in media, TV, strategic energy development documents), new teaching and learning strategies and methods.

U Hrvatskoj su odrasli građani prezaduženi, a mladi financijski nepismeni te je evidentna potreba za financijskim obrazovanjem. Međunarodno istraživanje OECD-a PISA 2012 pokazalo je da hrvatski petnaestogodišnjaci nisu sposobni donijeti ispravnu financijsku odluku i planirati budućnost. Različita istraživanja financijske pismenosti u Republici Hrvatskoj pokazala su da je prosječna ocjena financijske pismenosti poražavajuća. Najnižu pismenost imaju mlađi od 19 godina. U sklopu istraživanja uobičajeno se mjere tri osnovne kategorije: financijsko znanje, financijsko ponašanje i odnos prema novcu, a rezultati pokazuju da, premda se mladi od najranije dobi susreću s novcem, o novcu se ne razgovara u obitelji, vrtiću, školi ili fakultetu. Osnovno financijsko obrazovanje nije ponuđeno u obrazovnom sustavu u Hrvatskoj ni na kojoj razini. Posljedica je da mladi ne znaju procijeniti izazove i rizike na financijskom tržištu, što dovodi do loših poslovnih odluka, pada prihoda i prevelike zaduženosti. U nastojanju da se to promijeni, a u skladu s dva dokumenta Vlade Republike Hrvatske (Odluku o donošenju programa međupredmetnih i interdisciplinarnih sadržaja građanskog odgoja i obrazovanja za osnovne i srednje škole i Nacionalni strateški okvir financijske pismenosti potrošača za razdoblje od 2015. do 2020. godine) učenicima trećeg i četvrtog razreda Hotelijersko-turističke škole uveden je fakultativni predmet Financijska pismenost. U ovom su radu prezentirana očekivanja učenika koji su prepoznali vrijednosti nastavnog sadržaja, opisan je nastavni proces i načini učenja putem izvannastavnih aktivnosti. Prikazan je sadržajni okvir predmeta distribuiran po modulima u skladu s Odlukom o donošenju kurikuluma međupredmetne teme Poduzetništvo za osnovne i srednje škole, zatim metode procjene znanja i usporedba rezultata anketa učenika koji pohađaju financijsku pismenost i učenika koji je ne pohađaju.
The fact that the adult Croatian citizens are severely indebted and the youth is financially illiterate, created the need for financial education. OECD-a PISA 2012 international research showed that Croatian fifteen-year-olds do not know how to make a sound financial decision or plan their future. Various research studies conducted in the Republic of Croatia indicated a very low average rate of financial literacy, the lowest being recorded among the population younger than 19. The research ubiquitously measures three basic categories: financial knowledge, financial conduct and attitude toward money. The results show that the finances are not discussed either in the family circle or in school or at university. Basic financial education is not a part of the curriculum at either of the educational levels. Consequently, young people do not know how to estimate potential risks and meet the challenges of the financial market, which leads to making bad business decisions, profit decrease and debts. Trying to change that situation, the School of Hotel Management and Tourism in Zagreb has implemented Financial Literacy as an elective school subject in the third and the fourth year curriculum, in accordance with two documents issued by the Government of the Republic of Croatia (Decision on Implementing Interdisciplinary and Cross-Curricular Topics of Civic Education in Primary and Secondary Schools and National Strategic Outline of Financial Literacy of Consumers for the Period between 2015 and 2020). This paper encompasses the expectations of students who recognized the value of the subject matter, describes the educational process and learning methods used in extracurricular activities: visiting financial institutions. The paper also outlines the modular structure of the school subject curriculum, in accordance with Decision on Implementing Interdisciplinary and Cross-Curricular Topics of Entrepreneurship in Primary and Secondary schools, evaluation methods and comparative results of the survey conducted among the students who attend Financial Literacy classes and the students who do not.

Small children show a lot of media activity: they are perfectly capable of handling new technologies, they have been using them since the first years of their life. What activities they show depends on the family home and the behaviors they observe with their parents. With their support and providing positive patterns, the child can become not only a passive media user, but also an active media content creator, a kind of mediacreator, which over time will have a real impact on the reality in which he grows up. In the article, I present some of the results of the my research, in which I checked what role the media plays in the life of a child in an early school age. I try to answer the question, what media activities are displayed by children – whether it is only passive and imitative, or maybe they are actively creating media content.
