Opis:
The present study proposes a class of product-type exponential estimators for estimating the population mean of the study variable, using known values of some population parameters of an auxiliary character, under the simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) scheme. Furthermore, the study also proposes a modified exponential estimator based on both the ratio-type and the product-type exponential estimators. Properties of the proposed estimators, under the SRSWOR scheme, are obtained up to first order approximation. The modified exponential estimator under optimum conditions is shown to be more efficient than the simple sample mean and the ratio-type and product-type exponential estimators. The theoretical results are supported by an empirical illustration.

In this paper we consider the problem of estimation of population mean using information on two auxiliary variables in systematic sampling. We have extended Singh (1967) estimator for estimation of population mean in systematic sampling. We have derived the expressions for the bias and mean squared error of the suggested estimator up to the first degree of approximation. We have compared the suggested estimator with existing estimators and obtained the conditions under which the suggested estimator is more efficient. An empirical study has been carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimator.

Auditors need information on the performance of different statistical methods when applied to audit populations. The aim of the study was to examine the reliability and efficiency of a strategy combining systematic Monetary Unit Sampling and confidence intervals for the total error based on the Horvitz-Thompson estimator with normality assumption. This strategy is a possible alternative for testing audit populations with high error rates. Using real and simulated data sets, for the majority of populations, the interval coverage rate was lower than the assumed confidence level. In most cases confidence intervals were too wide to be of practical use to auditors. Confidence intervals tended to become wider as the observed error rate increased. Tests disclosed the distribution of the HorvitzThompson estimator was not normal. A detailed analysis of the distributions of the error amount in the examined real audit populations is also given.

Opis:
Increasing numbers of non-random errors are observed in contemporary sample surveying – in particular, those resulting from no response or faulty measutrements (imprecise statistical observation). Until recently, the consequences of these kinds of errors have not been widely discussed in the context of the testing of hypoteses. Researchers focused almost entirely on sampling errors (random errors), whose magnitude decreases as the size of the random sample grows. In consequence, researchers who often use samples of very large sizes tend to overlook the influence random and non-random errors have on the results of their study. The aim of this paper is to present how non-random errors can affect the decision-making process based on the classical hypothesis testing procedure. Particular attention is devoted to cases in which researchers manage samples of large sizes. The study proved the thesis that samples of large sizes cause statistical tests to be more sensitive to non-random errors. Systematic errors, as a special case of non-random errors, increase the probability of making the wrong decision to reject a true hypothesis as the sample size grows. Supplementing the testing of hypotheses with the analysis of confidence intervals may in this context provide substantive support for the researcher in drawing accurate inferences.

Sample-time errors can greatly degrade the dynamic range of a time-interleaved sampling system. In this paper, a novel correction technique employing a cubic spline interpolation is proposed for inter-channel sample-time error compensation. The cubic spline interpolation compensation filter is developed in the form of a finite-impulse response (FIR) filter structure. The correction method of the interpolation compensation filter coefficients is deduced. A 4GS/s two-channel, time-interleaved ADC prototype system has been implemented to evaluate the performance of the technique. The experimental results showed that the correction technique is effective to attenuate the spurious spurs and improve the dynamic performance of the system.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a general precision allocation method to improve machining performance of CNC machine tools based on certain design requirements. A comprehensive error model of machine tools is established by using the differential motion relation of coordinate frames. Based on the comprehensive error model, a reliability model is established by updating the primary reliability with an advanced importance sampling method, which is used to predict the machining accuracy reliability of machine tools. Besides, to identify and optimize geometric error parameters which have a great influence on machining accuracy reliability of machine tools, the sensitivity analysis of machining accuracy is carried out by improved first-order second-moment method. Taking a large CNC gantry guide rail grinder as an example, the optimization results show that the method is effective and can realize reliability optimization of machining accuracy.

Opis:
This paper presents how to use the near neighbours technique in aim to transform a given data set (Z, X, YT) of size N into a set of J ~ N local samples (Z, X), with restrictions on minimal number К of members in each local sample and on maximal difference of Y inside each local sample, where Z plays role of an outcome, X is an independent variable, and Y1 - (Y ..., YL) is a vector of L supplementary continuous variables. Then the procedure for non-parametric joint linearisation of an obtained set of local samples was proposed. The whole proposed method was applied to estimation of models with standard deviation of measurements as outcome Z and measured value as independent variable X. The paper was inspired by difficulties with estimation of the measurement error, which often occur in medicine, if accuracy of a measurement procedure depends on some properties of patient. Nevertheless, the proposed approach seems to be more general. It can be useful in many analyses of observational studies, which aim to estimate a family of the functions, preferable the linear ones, instead a single multivariate model.

Opis:
Coefficient of Variation (C.V) is a unitless measure of dispersion. Hence it is widely used in many scientific and social investigations. Although a lot of work has been done concerning C.V in the infinite population models, it has been neglected in the finite populations. Many areas of applications of C.V involves the finite populations like the use in official statistics and economic surveys of the World Bank. This has motivated us to propose six new estimators of the population C.V. In finite population studies regression estimators are widely used and the idea is exploited to propose the new estimators. Three of the proposed estimators are the regression estimators of the C.V for the study variable while the other three estimators makes use of the regression estimators of population mean and variance to estimate the ratio , the population C.V for the study variable. The bias and mean square error (MSE) of these estimators were derived for the simple random sampling design. The performance of these estimators is compared using two real life data sets. The simulation is carried out to compare the estimators in terms of coverage probability and the length of the confidence interval. The small sample comparison indicates that two of the proposed estimators perform better than the sample C.V. The regression estimator using the information on the Population C.V of the auxiliary variable emerges as the best estimator.

Opis:
The line intersect method is recommended for coarse woody debris (CWD) inventories. This is due to the fact that for the CWD volume estimation with the assumed standard error (SE), the total time of measurements using line sampling units is shorter than when using the fixed−area sample units. The aim of the research was to determine: (1) the number and size of sample units whose use will allow achieving the assumed SE of the CWD volume estimation, and (2) dependence of this number and size of sample units on the quantity of CWD. The research material was collected from 131 sample units (sampling lines) with a length of 50.48 m each. They were systematically located in the stands (128 ha) on Bukowa Góra in the Roztocze National Park (south−east Poland). Data concerning the intersection points of the sampling line (in relation to its beginning) with the axis of a downed log, made it possible to simulate the measurement using shorter sampling lines (4, 8, …, 44 m) than the original ones. The simulation was performed using the original data (when the average CWD volume was 73 m3/ha), which also represented an inventory unit in which the CWD volume accounted for 10, 40 and 70% of the original value. These data were obtained by a random elimination of the appropriate portion of trees. The relationship between the single−tree−plot coefficient of variation (calculated for such a size of a sample unit which on average contains only one log) and the length of the sampling line was determined (figs. 2 and 3). On this basis the number of sample units necessary to obtain the assumed SE value of the target variable was determined (tab. 1). Using the data on labour consumption of individual measurement operations, the total working time was calculated for such a number of sample units that would guarantee obtaining the assumed SE of the CWD volume estimation (tab. 2). The total time of measurements was longer in an inventory unit with scarcer CWD resources (figs. 5 and 6). The optimal (due to the time of measurements needed to achieve the assumed SE of the CWD volume estimation) line length occurred within the range of 4−150 m. The use of sample units with a length of 60−150 m each was recommended in forests with the average CWD volume over 30 m3/ha, and with a length of 150−200 m in forest with sparser CWD resources.

Sample surveys are often affected by missing observations and non-response caused by the respondents' refusal or unwillingness to provide the requested information or due to their memory failure. In order to substitute the missing data, a procedure called imputation is applied, which uses the available data as a tool for the replacement of the missing values. Two auxiliary variables create a chain which is used to substitute the missing part of the sample. The aim of the paper is to present the application of the Chain-type factor estimator as a means of source imputation for the non-response units in an incomplete sample. The proposed strategies were found to be more efficient and bias-controllable than similar estimation procedures described in the relevant literature. These techniques could also be made nearly unbiased in relation to other selected parametric values. The findings are supported by a numerical study involving the use of a dataset, proving that the proposed techniques outperform other similar ones.
