Opis:
Salix lapponum is a relict species that occurs in peat bogs. The most numerous population in Poland, which is located on Lake Bikcze, was selected as a source of plant material for genetic analysis to check if it could be used to translocate and establish new populations in the future. For this purpose, the genetic variability of five groups of plants, which were located 50 to 130 m away from one another, was assessed using the AFLP method. GenoType software did not indicate clonal individuals in the studied population. Although the groups were located at short distances from one another, the genetic differentiation between them, expressed as ΦPT and GST coefficients, was very high and the clustering methods adopted showed the presence of genetic structure. The lack of correlation between geographic distance and pair-wise ΦPT indicated that at least in the past the gene flow was fluent, but nowadays seedling recruitment is barely visible. These results can be explained by the fact that from the beginning of the 21st century the Lake Bikcze population has dramatically decreased in size. On the other hand, the expected heterozygosity in each group is quite high. If we want to use this population as a donor of reproductive material, action should be taken as quickly as possible.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to make an evaluation of the current stands of a relict species, Salix lapponum, within the area of the Polesie National Park, to determine the population size and condition of downy willow as well as to analyse biocenotic conditions in its stands. The study, conducted in the years 2001–2003, allowed to establish that the number of S. lapponum stands had decreased significantly and that its population size in the confirmed stands in the Polesie National Park was substantially lower than 50 years ago. Salix lapponum was a component of different phytocoenoses, but its highest population size and a high degree of development were noted at the sites with the Betulo-Salicetum repentis and Thelypteridi-Phragmitetum communities. The character of the phytocoenoses in which Salix lapponum occurred in greatest numbers may evidence the wide range of tolerance of downy willow with respect to habitat conditions. There is a probability that not only the changes in its habitat conditions, which were noted over the last half-century, had a significant effect on the reduction in the number of stands and in the population size of this species. An essential problem appears to be the fact of the absence of flowering in individuals in many of the studied populations, which may result in an insufficient degree of adaptation of S. lapponum to changing habitat conditions.

Opis:
The studies carried out in the years 2004-2005 and in 2009 were aimed at identifying the functioning conditions of a boreal plant relict, Salix lapponum, in its stands under anthropopressure in the Łęczna-Włodawa Lakeland. The study results confirmed that the number of S. lapponum stands on Lake Miejskie and on Cow Marsh and its population size had significantly decreased as well as the population condition had deteriorated during the last 50 years. Based on the results of an analysis of environmental (biocenotic and abiotic) factors it was found that changes in habitat conditions in its stands were the main threat for downy willow. Another cause of population decline and the deteriorated condition of downy willow individuals may be the habitat isolation. The observed intraspecific phenomena, i.e. the lack of flowering in individuals and the lack of downy willow seedlings could be the reason for insufficient reproduction efficiency, ipso facto, the weaker adaptation of individuals to changes in habitat condition. Therefore, it seems that it is necessary to pursue active species conservation and protection which should primarily involve population reconstruction – restitution.

Opis:
Studies carried out in 2001-2003 were aimed at evaluation of the current structure and conditions of the population along with the recording of biometric traits of downy willow specimens at their natural stand on Lake Bikcze. It has been found that the population of downy willow on the peat bog near Lake Bikcze has much increased since the 1950’s. The character of phytocoenoses, where Salix lapponum occurred most abundantly, may prove its wide requirements in terms of habitat conditions. S. lapponum specimens were in good condition. Furthermore, blooming of male and female specimens as well as great viability of pollen grains was recorded. High variability of selected biometric traits for studied species’ specimens was found.

Opis:
A subarctic-boreal relict species, Salix lapponum, found within the area of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lakeland (Eastern Poland), is particularly threatened with extinction due to the southern limit of its range and the specific conditions of its occurrence. This conclusion is evidenced by a systematic reduction in the number of its locations, which is accompanied by a decrease in the numbers of individuals making up its populations. The aim of the present study was to determine habitat conditions of the occurrence of Salix lapponum populations on the basis of an analysis of physico-chemical factors of groundwater at the sites associated with various stages of succession taking place in small peatland water bodies. The results of this study confirm the trend that the stands and population numbers of this species are decreasing with the intensification of ecological succession and the degree of its progress and at the same time show that this species exhibits a wide amplitude of many of the investigated factors. Among the groundwater parameters under investigation, the low level of total nitrogen, phosphorus fraction and DOC as well as the high level of Ca, pH and electrolytic conductivity can be considered to be a set of conditions that promote the maintenance of Salix lapponum populations. On the other hand, in the case of nitrates, nitrites, sulphates as well as the Na, K and Mg ions, the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test showed that the distribution of their values was invariant in relation to the studied habitats, which is probably evidence that they do not determine the development or extinction of the investigated populations in these habitats.

Opis:
The species of downy willow (Salix lapponum) and swamp willow (Salix myrtilloides) are extremely rare relicts among all members of the genus Salix. In Poland, they occur only in the eastern part of the Karkonosze Mountains, Masurian Lake District, and Polesie Lubelskie area. A huge threat to both species is the drainage of peat bogs and their excessive exploitation as well as diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. The present study aimed identify fungal species colonizing the aboveground organs of plants with disease symptoms and to indicate which species may pose a threat towards S. lapponum and S. myrtilloides growing under natural conditions. This research was conducted in Polesie National Park as a part of a research project by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Plant health assessments were carried out in natural habitats, while aboveground organs with disease symptoms were collected for laboratory mycological analysis. Colletotrichum salicis (teleomorph Glomerella salicis), Coniothyrium concentricum, Cylindrosporium salicinum, Phomopsis spp., Truncatella angustata, and Cytospora chrysosperma (teleomorph Valsa sordida) were the fungal species most frequently isolated from leaves and shoots of both willow species. The above-mentioned fungi are dangerous plant pathogens from the family Salicaceae. There were no obligatory parasites or monophagous pathogens on the aboveground organs of downy or swamp willow. Obligatory parasites may indicate a markedly low population of host plants in Polish conditions.
