The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 64, issue 1 (2016). The article is an attempt at an analysis of the usefulness of the concept of “bystander” that is becoming increasingly popular in social sciences, and in modern studies of the Shoah and the Holocaust. The author points to objective terminological dependencies, but she also takes into consideration the differences in the historical and cultural experience that require different perceptions of the role of witnesses in English language discourse and in the East European, and especially Polish, perspective.

The paper claims that in the online discussions on Facebook concerning veganism – a brand new social food habit in Western societies – one can observe the mixture of traditional moral and revolutionary arguments. The presence of almost-religious extremism impacts a veganism-related verbal and visual argumentation, and even violence against the vegans. From the technical point of view, in the discussions concerning the veganism the probability argument, the argument of going-beyond and the ad sacrificium argument prevail.

The article opens with an exposition of the notion of solidarity as an interper-sonal link, in opposition to the conventional association of individuals. In the first instance, such solidarity characterizes the Eucharistic communion which embraces those who feed from the same Bread and Wine, and is not understood as a passive effect of the sacrament, but as moral virtue which springs up from the cooperation with Jesus the Redeemer. Secondly, solidarity assimilates the life of a man to that of his Saviour which is echoed with the words of St. Paul: “and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me” (Ga. 2, 20). And, thirdly, solidarity, which finds its basis in the Eucharist, can not expect its fulfilment in this earthly life of man, but only in reaching the glorious floor of heaven.

People have different point of view about social – work. Some of them thought that is a normal work like other profession. But on the other hand some people thought that it is a special kind of work called, a challenge which sometimes called, sacrifice. As we see there are some different meanings of that category. Doctor Jasinski as a medical – man who works in a hospital understand quite well how important is such work for hospital patients. So no wonder that he support such work in any occasion . This paper gives many examples such kind of facts which say all about the force and sacrifice from hospital workers usually from social workers of Silesia hospitals. he has showed quite clear how important work is for whole medical staff. They can play a good example for panther profession any other branch of economy. It is a fine moral essay for everyone who works for another people.

Aim: The aim of the article is to recall the figure of Janusz Korczak, his life path, as well as his literary output. Particularly noteworthy is the dilemma he had to face in the final situation in which he – a writer, pedagogue, social activist, doctor – found himself in the German extermination camp in Treblinka on the day of his death on August 7, 1942. Methods: The comparative method was used in the article. Detailed content was articulated from the rich source material, showing the richness of Janusz Korczak’s thought and pedagogical practice. Results: As a result, the pedagogue was presented against the social and historical background of his period of life. The rich religious aspect of the pedagogue’s life, in which his extensive activities are enclosed, was also mentioned. Conclusions: The child, in terms of Korczak’s upbringing system, is a being the most important basis of whom is the right to be respected, and upbringing is a support for the child’s self-education. It is necessary to recall the figure of Janusz Korczak on a constant basis, just as Christian saints are remembered, and not without a particular reason. In both cases it is about a pattern. Also, the heroism, inherent in the pattern in both cases, is similar, if not identical. The child is constantly in mortal danger - perhaps no longer the gas chamber, but not less deadly distortions in preparation for life, in upbringing, and in the transmission of values.

The aim of the article was to present three stories of women, who had died while sacrificing their lives to others. However, attention was paid not only to the victim himself, but to his readiness. The patriarch Abraham was undoubtedly the model of this attitude. Blessed Laura, St. Edyta and Bl. Sisters of Nazarene in their care for their loved ones, asked for prayer, so that they could suffer suffering for certain intentions without knowing how it would look. But when it came time to fulfill the promise, each confirmed it by act.
Celem artykułu było przedstawienie trzech historii wyniesionych na ołtarze kobiet, które poniosły śmierć, ofiarowując swoje życie za innych. Zwrócono jednakże uwagę nie tyle na samą ofiarę, ile jej gotowość. Wzorem takiej postawy niewątpliwie był patriarcha Abraham. Błogosławiona Laura, Święta Edyta i Błogosławione Nazaretanki w trosce o swoich bliskich prosiły na modlitwie o to, aby mogły ponieść cierpienia w określonych intencjach, nie wiedząc, jak miałoby to wyglądać. Kiedy jednak przyszedł czas na wypełnienie obietnicy, wszystkie potwierdziły je czynem.

The article presents an analysis of the text of Mk 9,49-50 confronted with the parallel texts from Mt and Lk. The context of the metaphor related to salt in Mk makes it possible to trace the source of the metaphor in the Old Testament descriptions of sacrificial actions. The evangelist primarily emphasizes positive attributes of salt. Just as a small amount of salt can significantly improve the taste of food, so kindness and peace have a positive impact on the relationship in the community of the disciples of Jesus.

The Latin quotation in the title of the article ('What joy is there in observing the rivers of blood?') comes from the apologetic work of Arnobius "Against the Heathen" (Adversus nationes). The seventh book of this work contains perhaps the most explicit Christian critique of the Greeks and Romans who sacrificed animals. One of the arguments used by the learned speaker is the suffering of these animals, which were killed unnecessarily because the gods do not require sacrifices from men. Emphasising the fact that suffering is given to the victims and that there is no point in killing of the animals, Arnobius introduces the shocking details of what this sacrificial ritual (killing) was in practice. In this article, I try to draw attention to the fact that in presenting this information, the Christian advocate referred to earlier statements of classical authors such as Pythagoras and Plutarch, who also criticised the common ritual. Although one occasionally hears opinions today that the early Christian thinkers were indifferent to the fate of sacrificial animals, the writer of Sicca Venera affirms that it would be very difficult to apply generalisations, just as it would be very difficult to apply generalisations to the fate of sacrificial animals.just as it is justified to speak of sensitivity and empathy in this case.

In this essay, I argue that a comparison of Derrida’s “Faith and Knowledge” to the texts and thought of classical rabbinic Judaism can illuminate new conceptual connections among the different elements of Derrida’s thought. Both Derrida and the rabbinic texts can be viewed as affirming a type of “holding back” and “allowing the other to be,” stances which Derrida links to “religiosity” and to “messianicity beyond all messianism.” Moreover, the rabbinic texts appear to avoid the “autoimmune” reaction that Derrida sees as stemming from many sacrificial and self-sacrificial logics in which the self is problematically sacrificed in order to preserve the “unscathed” other. In addition, the rabbinic texts’ stance concerning divine authorization for war and capital punishment help to illuminate Derrida’s claim that the ostensibly “secular” wars of modern states are in fact better understood as “wars of religion.”

This article discusses the problem of gift from the perspective of philosophical person-alism. Since there are different doctrines of gift, it first provides an overview of anthro-pological, sociological, philosophical, ethical, and religious approaches to the nature of gift. Then, it delineates the essential notes of the gift and its structure, and relates the gift to duties of justice. Finally, it shows that the gift constitutes an anthropological transcendental that helps us to better understand man and his supernatural dimension.

The person and spiritual life of sister Wanda Boniszewska CSA have raised a growing interest among the faithful. The essence of this Polish mystic’s spirituality is the sacrifice offered to Jesus Christ as reparation for the sins of others, above all of priests and religious. This article is an analysis of Wanda Boniszewska’s “Dziennik duszy” (The Diary of a Soul). The entries reveal Jesus’ will towards the nun, her submission to the will of God as well as the forms and intentions of her sacrifices. The article does not analyse sources and does not discuss the question of the supernaturality of the spiritual charisms described by Boniszewska.

The subject of this article is an enigmatic and thus highly intriguing passage in Book 2 of Xenophon's Anabasis, where the author succinctly describes an alliance between Greek mer[1]cenaries and the Persian commander Ariaeus. Both sides pledged under oath to help each other, not to use trickery or treachery. This military pact was preceded by an animal sacrifice, after which the Greeks dipped sword blades and the Persians spearheads in the blood poured on a shield. The domestic animals killed in this rite were a bull and a ram, while the wild ones were a boar and a wolf. However, in the last case there is a controversy: some medieval manuscripts of the Anabasis do not mention the predatory animal, whereas others do. In the paper I argue that MSS lesson with the noun 'wolf ', should be retained, which in turn prompts one to ask about the religious context in which wolf was might be killed in sacrifice and by whom.

Christian teaching claims that animals, who are not humans, can’t be moral agents and have no rights. From this point of view “the idea to recognize that animals are equal to man, or that they have rights which should be respected by people, it is not acceptable by a Christianity”. Preachers conclude that constant debate on animal rights is an attempt to disguise the sad truth that human rights are not appreciated. The author of this contribution, as a strong believer in spiritual dignity of every living creature, advocates animals rights and concepts of unity of human and animals suffering in light of animal theology. The article presents two opposite views on animals in philosophy and culture- traditional and modern animal theology. Nowadays animal corporeality should not be understood in utilitarian way. Some theologians postulate changing the definition of animal soul, moreover, they claim that animals live in continuous relationship with God (Hagencord, Linzey).
