Opis:
The following article presents requirements imposed by canon law on parents of a child who is to be christened. The Church, as a depositary of the sacraments, has the right to define the conditions of its celebration. Ecclesiastical regulations protect the importance and dignity of granting sacraments. The article shows christening as a theological and legal event, then discusses legal conditions of admission to baptism, and the statutory requirements to the valid and fair granting of this sacrament. Motives, possibilities of postponing and refusal of granting the baptism are presented as well. The article relies mostly on Canonical Law Code and Ecclesial acts which refer to the sacrament of baptism.

The Article presents the issues regarding the sacrament of baptism as a gateway of faith, the source of Christian life and pledge of eternal salvation. Starting from considerations contained in the Document of the International Theological Commission “The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die without Being Baptised” (2007), author is trying to take a look on the practice of baptism of children and some elements of Catholic baptismal theology. The text is touching also the problem of limbo from the point of view of contemporary Magisterium of the Church. After presenting in synthetic form biblical fundaments of the baptismal theology, and the practice of the Church regarding the baptism of children, the text introduces to the traditional doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding the necessity of baptism of children. The paper presents then the elements of the contemporary teaching of the Magisterium regarding the sacrament of baptism with the particular attention to the statements of the Second Vatican Council, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (Instruction on Infant Baptism Pastoralis actio), The Code of Canon Law, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the teaching of Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The texts of the Magisterium and the development of studies of contemporary theologians allow to look in a new perspective on the practice of the Church regarding baptism of children.Biblical, historical, and theological perspective of presentation of the problem leads to the conclusion that the question to be asked in relation to the baptism of children is not “whether or not baptize the children?” but “why should we baptize the children?”. The answer to that question is located in the dogma regarding salvation and in the dogma regarding sacraments as the tools necessary for salvation entrusted by Christ to the Church. The baptism is undoubtedly the sacrament of salvation. It is an instrument, which the Church has received from Jesus in order to transmit it to all the people. The task of the Church is to pass this salvation to all the people. Fulfilling Christ’s mandate, the Church from the beginnings, proclaimed the Good News and baptized. Minimalistic understanding of that command of Jesus based on the logic of order and duty led the scholastic theology to develop of the theory of limbo. The obligation to fulfil some minimum for salvation have lead to seek a solution of dilemma concerning the destiny of those who will not be able to fulfil the order directly, that is to be baptized of water, or indirectly (in voto), which refers to the baptism of desire and the baptism of blood. The scholastic theology has proposed some substitute of salvation that is the theory of limbo puerorum. Limbo would be the substitute of eternal happiness for those children, who would not have any possibility to fulfil the minimum established by commandment. From the perspective of the contemporary Magisterium, this minimalistic interpretation is insufficient. In order to understand the meaning of the sacrament of baptism we should change perspective. We must move our attention from the legal duties and conditions that the person must fulfilled in order to be baptized, and redirect it on God himself, on the One who is the source of the grace of baptism and all the spiritual gifts, all goods, which God gives to the man in this sacrament. In this perspective, baptism appears as the most precious gift of God by which Jesus Himself gives to the man the grace of faith and pledge of salvation. Baptism appears as an encounter in which God communicates with man, and endows him His love and life. The Sacrament of Baptism, especially the baptism of children, reminds a wonderful truth, which is gratuitousness of salvation. Baptism of children also proves that faith is a gift that initiates our way to the fullness of life. In this perspective, it would be difficult today to defend the theory of limbo. The Church practices to baptize the children not because of fear of the possibility of reduction and even deprivation of eternal beatitude of those who cannot fulfil some formal requirements to receive this sacrament. The practice of the infant baptism expresses the faith of the Church in the power of God’s love and His will to save every human being.God has an infinite number of possibilities to provide salvation to man even outside of the sacrament of baptism. The Church has just only such a tool, and that is why the Church baptizes the children. The faith is the gift. The salvation is the most precious gift of God. The Church therefore desires share this wonderful gift with all the children, that they may have God, and have life, and have it in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10).

Opis:
The author discusses the problem of conditional administering of two sacraments: of Penance and of the Anointing of the Sick. On the basis of the teaching of the Church—lex credendi (mainly the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Codex Iuris Canonici) and lex orandi (past rituals and currently valid liturgical texts)—the author claims that the Catholic Church has only recognized two sacraments as conditionally administered: of Baptism and of Anointing of the Sick. The idea of conditional administering of Penance has only been discussed in handbooks of moral theology, whose authors not only pondered upon the issue, but also admitted it as an option which they often encouraged. Contemporary theology of sacred sacraments strongly highlights the fact that they are sacraments of faith. Hence, they can only be accepted by believers who are expected to participate in them with awareness. The Sacrament of Penance, in particular, requires such acts like penitence and confession as prerequisite to absolution. Hence, there can be no conditional absolution or conditional Anointing of the Sick. These sacraments are either administered to those who have the required dispositions, or they are not administered at all.

Opis:
The author focused on problems which can arise while applying norms envisaged by the supreme lawmaker which have to be fulfilled by the baptized adult for a sacrament to be received validly and licitly. Baptism of desire is not enough; a baptism of water is necessary, because this is the gateway to the sacraments, and without it the rest of the sacraments cannot be validly received. To be a “living person” is to be capable of baptism. The one baptized validly cannot receive baptism for a second time. An adult cannot be validly baptized without wanting to be baptized. The manifestation of will constitutes a requirement ad validitatem of celebration of baptism. An adult may be licitly baptized only if the person has basic instruction in the teaching of the Church and the duties incumbent upon a Christian. For licitness an adult should as well try him/herself by means of a catechumenate. To be forgiven for personal sins an individual must repent. The requirements change slightly in the danger of death. In such circumstances an adult can be baptized when having some knowledge of the principal truths of faith, has manifested in any way the intention to receive baptism and promises to observe the commandments of the Christian religion (CIC, can. 864–865).

The main theological issues faced in the works on Ordo Confirmationis included: definition of the sacramental sign of Confirmation, i.e. its substance and sacramental formula, the main effect of Confirmation, which is the Gift of the Holy Spirit as well as the relation of the sacrament to baptism and the Eucharist. Confirmation was unequivocally recognized as the second sacrament of Christian initiation. Pastoral problems referred to ministers, recipients and witnesses of Confirmation. Presbyters were granted wider rights to administer Confirmation, while godparents were allowed to become witnesses and the Conferences of Bishops could define the age of recipients as other than that of 7 years.

Opis:
W odniesieniu do przygotowania rodziców do chrztu dziecka w artykule przedstawiono propozycję trzyetapowego procesu obejmującego etap dalszy, bliższy i bezpośredni.
Among the seven sacraments Baptism has a special place since the Church has been ordered to perform it by Christ himself. It is also called the sacrament of initiation which introduces a person into the community of Catholics and the first sacrament since the reception of the other sacraments depends on it. There seems to be a strong need to explore its nature and meaning to raise consciousness among the baptized. For this reason a role and form of baptismal preparation should be reconsidered. In the case of parents’ preparation for their infant baptism a three stage process has been presented, both gradual and permanent, comprising three phases: remote, proximate and immediate. The author calls for applying the neo-catechumenal way in the traditional pastoral practice associated with baptizing, rediscovering the value of the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist, especially in the Lent and finally discusses preparation of the Sacrament itself and its liturgical celebration.

“Intergenerational forgiveness” is actually a prayer for intergenerational forgiveness, and its purpose is “healing of the family tree” or to achieve “intergenerational healing”. It appeared in connection with diseases and sufferings of the people and the need for pastoral care of them. Doubtful, however, is already the biblical context of this phenomenon and interpretation of related biblical texts require mature biblical hermeneutics. Difficult to avoid are also dogmatic problems, mainly related to the efficacy of the sacraments of baptism and penance. All these circumstances suggest the need to completely abandon this concept in theory and practice.

Opis:
The second Vatican Council frequently emphasised the importance of preaching, especially homily.  Even though 50 years have passed since the Council, this is still a current issue. Since the liturgy of the Word is an integral part of sacramental celebration, the signs present in the Divine Word must be attributed full importance in order to strengthen faith, as must be homily which is an emanation of the Word of God. However, this crucial element in the celebration of each Sacrament of the Church virtually does not appear in pastoral work. The desire of the Church in respect of homily is expressed chiefly in liturgic books for the celebration of Holy Sacraments. It is worrying that this issue is given little attention in Homiletic Directory. A frequent lack of homily in the administration of the Sacraments and a lack of detailed guidance in Homiletic Directory call for an exploration of this issue. The goal is to answer the question about the Church’s wishes regarding the place and content of a homily in the celebration of the Sacraments out of Holy Mass, expressed in liturgical books for celebration of the Sacraments and adapted to the customs of Polish dioceses.

Opis:
God acts “ordinary” through the sacraments of the Church and saves us from sin, however always remains open for us a question about the way of salvation. In the space of theological researches and their pastoral applications, however, controversial concepts have emerged, raising a number of questions and doubts that demand a critical assessment. These include concepts of “generational sin”, “intergenerational forgiveness” and “wicket’s confession”. Theological reflection and the involvement of the pastors of the Church in Poland brought with them concrete results in the form of competent theological opinions and disciplinary regulations, and this whole process has become an opportunity to deepen the awareness of God’s action in the sacraments of baptism and penance, as well as the theological-pastoral challenge.

Opis:
The paper presents problematic issues concerning Baptism and the Eucharist depicted in the teaching of the Council of Trent and of the contemporary Catechism of the Catholic Church. Because of the reformers, the teaching on Baptism and especially the teaching on the sacrificial character of the Eucharist and the real presence of Christ under the consecrated species became a subject of serious controversies. Those controversies gave the Catholic bishops courage to remain faithful to the Apostolic Tradition concerning what was expressed in the appropriate decrees of the Council of Trent. After four centuries a desire arose in the Catholic Church to show a clear indication concerning the understanding of the truths of the faith. Many people had difficulties with an expression of the truth proclaimed by the Church. Therefore the new Catechism has been prepared in which – according to the teaching of Vaticanum II – included clarifications of the Catholic faith.
Artykuł prezentuje problematykę chrztu i Eucharystii przedstawioną w nauce Soboru Trydenckiego i aktualnego Katechizmu Kościoła Katolickiego.

Opis:
The article ”The history and theology of a baptismal bowl” shows the way in which the form of baptizing had an influence on the evolution of shape and size of a baptismal bowl. It also describes theological meaning of a baptismal bowl in the context of analysing the rituals of liturgy of baptism, which was renewed after the Second Vatican Council. In terms of Ritual and Ceremonies of Blessing a baptismal bowl is a real baptismal source. Mention should be made of the fact that it is necessary to tell the difference between a baptistery which means a separated building outside the church and chapel, which is situated in church, or another place in a church building. This place is created only for giving the sacrament of holy baptism. Not all the parishes can have a special baptistery, but all of them must have a baptismal bowl (the baptismal source) where the sacrament of holy baptism is given. In post-conciliar liturgical books the baptismal bowl is called the source of salvation or a gate of spiritual life of Christ, or a kind of her womb thanks to which people are born to a new life through water and Holy Spirit. In the renewed liturgy, which emphasizes the Paschal character of the sacrament of holy baptism, a baptismal bowl appears as a place of transition from death to life, because the ones who are born in this world are infected by the dirt of original sin, then washed in it by streams of baptismal water they are incorporated in Christ. In this way they regain their original purity and impeccability and their souls are fertilized by the riches of virtues. The baptismal source can be also described as a place of reaching divine alliance, because baptism is the first sacrament of New Alliance in which people experience ontic relationship with Christ and are united with His Body. In this meaning a baptismal bowl in post-conciliar liturgy appears as locus theologicus, since apart from the pulpit and the altar it creates historical-saving triad in the architecture of faith, and its design and artistry can become the source of deep theological reflections.

Opis:
The main object of this study is the baptismal Ordo of the Syro-Oriental liturgical tradition. The author, starting from the ancient sources, shows the phases of the development of the rite and of its theology. Referring to the Church Fathers like Ephrem and Narsai, he points that from ancient times the Church of the East has attached a special significance to the baptismal anointing. Indeed, in the case of this tradition the anointing is threefold: two times before the baptismal immersion and once following it. In this study a commentary of the patriarch Timothy II (1318–1332) was also presented, with some essential and original medieval ideas relating to the praxis and to the baptismal theology of the Church of the East. In the last part of the paper the author reflected on the contemporary Rite of the Baptism in the Church of the East.
