In 1942, Edith Grünwald was a young, nearly 23 years old, Slovak Jewess from Holicz, when the Gestapo arrested her in Ilava, where she was working as a clerk. After spending some time in the concentration camp in Bratislava, she was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, in one of the first Jewish RSH transports from Slovakia. Her camp number was 3507. Thanks to her education, she was able to work in the Politische Abteilung (the Political Department). She was the personal secretary of Herbert Kirschner. When the war was over in January 1945, she was evacuated to Ravensbrück, and then freed by the Red Army in Malchow, located near Berlin. Although the ordeal in the Nazi camp was over, Edith didn’t enjoy freedom for long. In May 1945, short after coming back from the concentration camp, she was arrested by the UB in Katowice. She was accused of mistreating her fellow prisoners and cooperating with SS Men, in particularly with her boss Kirschner. The investigation of Edith`s case, conducted by the Special Criminal Court, lasted more than 2 years. Thanks to the involvement of the Czechoslovakian Consulate along with the help of two lawyers, they managed to deny the allegations made by her former inmate, Polish Jewess Dunia Urbańska (Urison). The trial, which took place on May 14, 1947 before the Wadowice District Court, resulted in Edith Grünewald being declared innocent after testimony from a fellow Slovak Jewess proved the allegations as false. As it turned out, the arrest (combined with a brutal beating) and the investigation was a result of a plot by her former fellow prisoner, who was jealous of Edith`s position in the camp and above all her regard of the prisoners.

Author approves in the commentary to the judgment the position taken by the Supreme Court of Poland in the decision of 30 September 2015, I KZP 9/15. The Supreme Court considered the problem of composition of the District Court – Labour and Social Security Court adjudicating on an appeal against the judgment of the National Disciplinary Court of the National Chamber of Auditors. As argued in the commentary, the District Court does not instigate disciplinary proceedings from the beginning but continues it as an appellate body. The main disciplinary proceedings are held before the National Disciplinary Court of the National Chamber of Auditors. The District Court although acts as a court of first instance with an appeal to the Court of Appeals, has limited powers only to verification of the National Disciplinary Court’s judgment. Thus, the District Court sits in a three-judges panel (art. 29 § 1 k.p.k.).

Po odzyskaniu niepodległości przez Polskę w nowej strukturze sądownictwa powołano Sąd Okręgowy w Białej Podlaskiej, który znajdował się w apelacji warszawskiej i tworzył bialski okręg sądowy obejmujący powiaty: bialski, konstantynowski, radzyński i włodawski. Okręg ten składał się z mniejszych okręgów sądów pokoju (potem grodzkich). Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie dziejów ustrojowych Sądu, sposobu działania jego kancelarii, procesu dokumentowania działalności oraz zabezpieczenia pozostałej po nim spuścizny aktowej. Znaczenie omawianej instytucji dla dziejów regionu bialskopodlaskiego oraz bogactwo informacji dotyczących społeczności lokalnej, które zawiera spuścizna dokumentacyjna po niej, są wystarczającymi przesłankami do zanalizowania powyższej problematyki.
After Poland regained its independence, the District Court in Biała Podlaska, with the Warsaw Appellate Court, was established in the new structure of court system. It functioned as the Biała Podlaska court covering the following counties: Biała Podlaska, Konstantynów, Radzyń Podlaski and Włodawa. The district consisted of the smaller districts of courts with justices of peace (later transformed into municipal courts). The purpose of the article is to present the history of changes of the court as an institution, the way its office functioned, i.e. documented its activity and secured its documentary legacy. The significance of the institution for the Biała Podlaska region as well as the richness of information concerning the local community contained in its documentary legacy seem to be the main reasons for analyzing the above problem.
