Opis:
Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to present and assess changes in the level and structure of con-sumption of urban and rural households in Poland. Research method – The data used in the article were obtained from the publications of Central Sta-tistical Office on the results of household budget surveys, including the “Socio-economic situation of households, urban-rural diversity” as well as from literature on the subject. The research covered the years 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. The selection of years was determined by the willingness to observe the changes that were visible in the budgets of these households after Poland had joined the European Union. The analysis applies analytical methods, including comparative and literature analyzes, as well as descriptive and monographic methods. The applied research method should be defined as a descriptive analysis with elements of quantitative analysis. Simple statistical methods were used to analyze the col-lected data. They comprised indicators of the structure of consumer spending and household con-sumption, including the food index and the index of free choice expenditures, as well as quantitative food consumption indexes, expressed in natural units, and durable goods expressed in % of house-holds being equipped with a given good. The research results are presented with the use of graphic presentation methods, especially the tabular ones. Results – Household consumption in Poland is determined by a combination of many macro and microeconomic, as well as non-economic factors. In the years 2005–2020, they affected the situation of Polish households as a certain set of factors having impact of various severity and different directions.Together, they caused changes both in the level and structure of consumer spending and in the very consumption of urban and rural households. Based on the conducted analysis, it can be concluded that in 2005–2020 the decrease in the differences between the living conditions of urban and rural house-holds, measured by their consumption expenditure and the consumption of food and non-food pro-ducts was observed. However, rural households still have a lower level of expenditure per 1 person compared to urban households. There are also differences in the structure of consumer spending. Rural households are characterized by a higher share of basic spending and a lower share of free choice expenditure. Despite the progress that has been noted, rural households are still characterized by a less rational model of food consumption and a slightly lower level of being equipped with modern ICT goods.

Opis:
Inadequate consumption of nutritious food is still a challenge in most rural areas, as majority of households are in between jobs. This leads to rural households not having stable jobs and this affects their income, and it results to rural household not been able to acquire nutritious food as level of income is one of the major factors that influence households’ dietary diversity and dietary quality. The purpose of this study was to measure household food consumption pattern using Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS), with food groups over a recall period of seven days in rural household of Mopani District Municipality. The study estimated the determinants of rural household dietary diversity. The sample size of the study was 173 rural households, the sample size was determine using multi-stage sampling procedure and proportional random sampling as its sampling to select the rural households in Mopani district municipality. The descriptive statistics results indicated that majority of rural households have a high dietary diversity status and the average HDDS of food consumption was 80.75%. Regarding the regression results, household income, gender, level of education, access to a home garden and ownership of livestock suggested a positive influence of rural households in attaining high dietary diversity.

Opis:
Growing eucalypts at a farm level in the form of woodlot has become popular among rural household in Ethiopia. Households in the study area establish mainly eucalypts woodlot as a component of livelihood portfolio both for meeting household wood consumption and generating cash income. However, there were no sufficient information on the extent of eucalypts woodlot, and factors influencing the household decision on their establishment on the individual farm lands. This study was conducted in Cheha Districts in Guraghe zone with the aims of assessing the magnitude of eucalypts woodlots and factors influencing their establishment at household level. The data was collected by employing formal survey using structured questionnaire and Woodlot inventory. The latest version of Stata, version 13 and Microsoft excel were used to analyze the data. The result of the study revealed that some 58% (n = 61) of the sampled farmers in the study area had eucalypts woodlot, and among these 27% and 24% are those farmers who have converted their crop and grazing lands to eucalypts woodlots targeting either to earn more income or to increase the productivity of the land which has denied to grow cereal crops and pastures. Most of the farmers considered eucalypts as one of the major sources of income and risk aversion. The study is concluding that different socioeconomic factors, family size, crop income and accessibility of road had significant negative effect whereas total land holding and education level of the household heads had significant positive effects on the household’s decision for the allocation of land and establishment of eucalypts woodlot on the farm lands. Further studies are needed to compare the return from Eucalyptus with other crops in terms of economic and environmental benefits and finally management aspect of eucalypts needed further research for the productivity of allocated land.

Opis:
This study investigated the impact of credit access and cooperative membership on food security of rural households in Southwestern Nigeria. A multi stage sampling procedure was employed to select 300 rural households for the study. Data were analyzed using food security index, binary logit model, propensity score matching (PSM) and Augmented inverse probability weighting model (AIPW). Binary logit estimate reveals that age, household size, years of education, farm size, farm income and non-farm income significantly influenced the likelihood of rural households being members of cooperatives while household size, years of education, farm size, gender, asset and farm income significantly influenced the likelihood of rural households’ access to credit. Food security index revealed that about 66 percent of the households are food insecure. PSM revealed that cooperative membership and credit access is expected to increase the food security of rural households by approximately 1446 and 1496 kilocalories per person per day, respectively. AIPW revealed that cooperative membership and credit access is expected to increase the food security of rural households by approximately 1888 and 1899 kilocalories per person per day, respectively. The study concluded that credit access and cooperative membership has a positive and significant impact on food security of rural households. Thus, any programmes targeted at ensuring rural households’ food security, particularly southwest should take into cognizance their credit access and cooperative membership.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper was to identify the factors influencing households to diversify rural on-farm livelihood activities in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. This is against a background where literature suggests low livelihoods diversification among rural households despite several claimed benefits of diversification. Cross-sectional survey data was randomly collected for this study in October 2018 from 190 rural households in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. A structured questionnaire was used for that purpose. Ordered logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that diversification of on-farm livelihood activities was influenced by the gender of household head, education level of household head, household size, and number of livestock units owned. To promote on-farm livelihoods diversification in rural areas, the paper suggests targeting gender differential, informal education and awareness, labor dynamics associated with on-farm livelihood activities and household livestock units.

Opis:
Although food is one of the basic necessities of life, food insecurity remains a major problem in Nigeria. This paper analyzes the factors influencing food security among rural households in Ogun State, Nigeria. Data were collected with multi-stage sampling procedure and analyzed with descriptive statistics and Probit regression model. The results show that mean age and household size of the respondents were 43years (std dev = 13.31) and 5 (std dev = 3.28) respectively. The mean per capita household expenditure per day was N113.57. Using two-third mean per capita expenditure as food security line, 70.1 percent of the households were food secure, while 36.7 percent were food secure with dollar per day per person food security line. Factors that contributed to food security status of the households at two-third mean per capita household expenditure and a dollar per day were dependency ratio, marital status, age, and income. It was recommended that in order to increase food security, rural dwellers should be encouraged to diversify their income sources, among others.
Zaleca się, aby w celu poprawy bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego zachęcać mieszkańców obszarów wiejskich m.in. do dywersyfikacji źródeł dochodu.

Opis:
W artykule przeprowadzono analizę determinant ubóstwa miejskich i wiejskich gospodarstw domowych z wykorzystaniem dwumianowego modelu logitowego.
The article analyses poverty determinants of urban and rural households using binomial logit model. There were used ROC curves and area under ROC curves (AUC) to evaluate the predictive power of estimated risk models of urban and rural households poverty. Based on ROC curves there were chosen cut-off points (level of probability below which a household is considered not poor). On the basis of ROC curves and areas under ROC curves for simplified logit models (containing subsets of determinants) there was pointed the best poverty indicator. In urban and in rural areas the best targeting indicator is socio-economic group of household.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the level of income inequality of rural households against other classes of household residence: small, medium and large cities. The assessment of intra-group or internal inequality was based on Theil-L and Theil-T indices. Inter-group inequality was measured summarily by the inter-group (or ‘between’) component in the Theil decomposition, and more verbosely by income disparity analysis. Research drew on individual, non-identifiable data from the “Household Budget Survey”, carried out by the Central Statistical Office in 2010, 2015 and 2017. It was found that despite rising income, rural households were still the poorest of all residence classes and lagged far behind average Polish households. Their internal income inequality was, throughout the study period, higher than in classes of households living in small-sized and medium-sized towns. This class was also most responsible for total income inequalities in Polish households.
Celem artykułu jest ocena poziomu nierówności dochodowych klasy wiejskich gospodarstw domowych w stosunku do innych klas miejscowości zamieszkania, tj.: małych, średnich i dużych miast.

Opis:
African indigenous chickens (IC) though commonly kept by households in rural areas for consumption and sale, their contribution to rural livelihoods is generally overlooked. Literature suggests that IC production plays a vital role in rural communities of South Africa as an important source of animal protein and income. Despite these claimed benefits, production of indigenous chickens in Alice and other parts of South Africa’s rural areas is very low. This study used a cross-sectional survey of 120 households who keep IC in Alice communal area. The multivariate probit model was employed to investigate the factors that determine the choice of indigenous chicken owned by rural households. Results reveal that, gender, age, household size, association membership, access to formal markets, access to veterinary services, access to informal credit, access to formal credit and diversity score drive ownership of different indigenous chickens at household level. Thus far, the paper argues that, promotion of ownership of indigenous chicken at household level calls for strategic institutional alignment and a clear understanding of social demographic characteristics of the targeted community, which should be supported by several awareness campaigns and client based selection of indigenous chicken breeds of socio-economic importance to the household.

This study evaluates the impact of non-farm enterprises on the poverty status of rural farming households in Nigeria. The data were obtained from General Household Survey fielded by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2010/2011 and 2015/2016. However, only 1,619 matched observations were used for analyses, using Propensity Score Matching, Double Difference, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty measures and Poverty Equivalent Growth Rates (PEGRs). The results show that 53.3% of participants lived below the poverty line (poor) in 2011, while in 2016, this proportion declined to 31.94%. The poverty incidence of female participants (0.5504) decreased by 53.68% while that of male participants (0.4112) decreased by 4.81%. If female participants had not participated in non-farm enterprises, their poverty would have been reduced by only 9.7% but due to participation, it was reduced by 53.68%. The Poverty Equivalent Growth Rates are higher for all the three FGT measures than the actual growth rates for all participants, males and females with females showing higher poverty reduction; which means that growth was propoor, although the poverty of the poor decreased more than that of the core poor. Also, after five years there is a decline in poverty incidences of participants across the six geopolitical zones and the decline was mostly felt in the North East (NE) followed by North Central (NC) while the least percentage decline was seen in North West (NW). Since participation in non-farm activities had a significant impact on the poverty of participants, the promotion of non-farm enterprises among poor farmers should be encouraged.
