Opis:
Background. Wheelchair rugby is one of most spectacular team games meant for people with cervical spinal cord injury. Lately this sport has been gaining popularity. In order to estimate progress of players and analyze effects of training, coaches use various series of tests of special physical fitness. The aim of this study was to evaluate skills of wheelchair rugby players depending on their functional classification expressed in points and the years they play this sport. Material and methods. A group of 35 wheelchair rugby players were recruited for the study. The players participate in the Polish Wheelchair Rugby League (PLRnW) competitions in teams: Flying Wings Rzeszów. Brave Snails Lublin and Garbate Anioły Radom. The subjects were divided into four groups according to their functional classification in wheelchair rugby: 1st group – 0.5 and 1.0 point players (n = 9 ), 2nd group – 1.5 point (n = 8), 3rd group – 2.0 and 2.5 point (n = 11 ), and 4th group – 3.0 and 3.5 point (n = 7). The wheelchair rugby players participated in 4 special physical fitness tests: six-minute Cooper test, 20 m sprint, slalom with the ball, medicine ball throw. Results and conclusions. Results of the performed tests showed a strict correlation between the results achieved in tests of special physical fitness and the players’ functional classification. No strict correlation between the results achieved in tests of special physical fitness and the years of playing sport was found.

Opis:
This study aimed to compare the physical demands of contact small sided game (CSSG), non-contact small sided game (NCSSG) and match play in female rugby union. Fifteen female rugby union players participated within this study. Participants completed two testing sessions. Session one involved two 20-minute small sided games (contact and non-contact). Session two involved a competitive rugby union game. Movement characteristics, heart rate, PlayerLoadTM and tackles were recorded using GPS units and heart rate monitors. No significant differences were identified between conditions in relation to average heart rate or time spent in different heart rate zones. Significant differences were identified between conditions for distance, normalised PlayerLoadTM and tackles. Distance covered was significantly higher in the non-contact small sided game, while normalised PlayerLoadTM and tackles were significantly lower in this condition. These findings suggest that the physiological stress, in terms of heart rate, is comparable between the match and both small sided games. Thus both small sided games seem to elicit an appropriate internal training response. However, the reductions in tackles and normalised PlayerLoadTM in the non-contact small sided game are likely to reduce injury risk, while the increase in distance covered may enhance the training stimuli provided in this condition.

Opis:
Rugby is a popular sport and requires participants to have commensurate physical attributes for effective participation. One physical fitness test battery which enjoys extensive use contextually is the European Test of Physical Fitness (Eurofit). However, the psychometric properties of the test battery have not been explored and documented in the local context. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the test-retest reliability of the Eurofit test battery items among elite schoolboy rugby players in Harare, Zimbabwe. Thirty-two (32) players with the mean age of 17.2 (SD=1.03) years completed all the tests during the in- season period. Anthropometric and Eurofit test measurements were obtained twice with seven days separating the assessments. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) estimated the reliability test items. The global ICCs for the Eurofit test items ranged from 0.59 to 0.98. The Sit-and-Reach test yielded the highest temporal reliability (ICC=0.98). The Plate Tapping test, Flamingo Balance test and 10×5m Shuttle Run test showed ICCs < 0.7. Cognisant of the study limitations, some component test items of Eurofit test battery can be recommended for reliably evaluating aspects of physical fitness in junior rugby players in Zimbabwe whilst others still need consideration and test modification.

Opis:
Body build is an important factor in achieving success in sport. One sport that is less investigated, in terms of player morphological characteristics, is rugby 7s. Rugby 7s with 7 players in a team was derived from the classical Rugby Union with 15 players. A team of rugby 7s consists of scrum and offensive formations. As a contact sport, rugby carries the risk of numerous injuries for its players. The aim of the study was the morphological characterization and assessment of body composition, hypermobility and pain threshold of rugby players, taking into account their tasks and position on the pitch during the game. The research carried out in Kaskada Szczecin team showed that the scrum players obtained considerably higher statistically significant values of body weight, BMI, fat content percentage as well as chest depth than the offensive players, who obtained statistically significantly higher values of muscle tissue percentage. The examined rugby players had a high pain threshold, however, no statistically significant differences between both rugby formations were found in the assessment of the pain threshold. The occurrence of hypermobility in the studied group of rugby players was determined at only 3.8%. Identification of potential factors such as pain threshold or hypermobility can provide additional information for trainers and physiotherapists, helping to minimize the risk of injury.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the energy, macronutrient an selected micronutrient intake of second league Rugby Union players and to assess the anthropometric characteristic of this group. Players (n = 44) were divided into forwards (n = 20) and backs (n = 24), who differed significantly in weight (92.6 vs 80.8 kg), BMI (28.6 vs 24.5 kg/m2) and percentage of body fat (22.0 vs 13.3%). The dietary intake was assessed using 3-day dietary recalls. There were no significant differences in dietary intake related to player position. Athletes reported a mean daily energy intake of 3613.4 ±942.6 kcal (carbohydrates 41.4%, protein 17.8%, fats 39.3%). The mean intake of carbohydrates and protein were on a level of 4.8 and 1.9 g/kg of body weight/day, respectively. Although the mean daily intake of minerals and vitamins met recommendations, some players did not reach the requirements, especially for potassium (61.4%) and vitamin C (22.7%). The differences in body compositions of the players suggest differences in the type of training and the specificity of the player’s position. These improper proportions of dietary nutrients within the study group may decrease opportunities to achieve optimum results during matches.
