Opis:
The effects of water extracts of Chenopodium album leaves and roots on the growth of grass weed (Setaria viridis) and broad leaf weed (Corchorus olitorius) grown with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in greenhouse pots were studied in the National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt. In this experiment fresh leaf and root extracts and their corresponding dry leaf and root extracts at different concentrations were used. There were significant inhibitions in the dry weights of S. viridis and C. olitorius by all extracts at the flowering stage of beans and at harvest. The inhibition effect of all C. album extracts on both weeds (dry weight/pot) depended on the extracted plant organ (leaf or root), its fresh or dry form as well as its concentrations. The inhibition caused by the leaf extract was much higher on weed growth than that of root extract. A higher concentration of fresh leaf extract (25%) had the highest significant inhibition effect. The results also indicated that C. olitorius was more sensitive to the extracts than S. viridis. On the other hand, the inhibition effect of the extracts on the growth of both weeds was accompanied by increased bean growth and yield/plant. The analysis of both leaf and root extracts of C. album revealed that the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids in the leaf extract was more than triple that of the root extract. The results suggested that the fresh leaf extract of C. album may be a possible tool for the development of weed control using natural herbicides.

Opis:
The root system architecture (RSA) displays complex morphological characteristics because of diverse root growth behaviors. Recent studies have revealed that swarming behavior among roots is particularly important for RSA to adapt to environmental stimuli. However, few models are proposed to simulate RSA based on swarming behavior of roots. To analyze plasticity of RSA affected by swarming behavior, we propose viewing it as a swarm of single roots. A swarming behavior model is proposed by considering repulsion, alignment, and preference of individual single roots. Then, the swarming behavior model is integrated into a simple and generic RSA model (called ArchiSimple). Lastly, characteristics of RSA affected by swarming behavior model and non-swarming behavior model are compared and analyzed under three different virtual soil sets. The characteristics of RSA (such as primary root length, lateral root length, lateral roots, and resource uptake) are significantly promoted by swarming behavior. Root system distributions can also be greatly affected by swarming behavior. These results show that root foraging and exploration in soil can be regarded as collective behavior of individual single root.

Opis:
Agronomic factors, and mineral fertilization in particular, have a strong impact on the quality of carrot roots. In recent years, researchers have begun to design eco-friendly agricultural practices that would stimulate the quality and yield of carrot roots. Our aim has been to analyse selected quality parameters pertaining to the chemical composition of carrot roots, and relate them to the application of different growth stimulators and cover crops. For this purpose, a field experiment was conducted in 2009-2011 investigating the effect of growth stimulators and stubble crops on the accumulation of chemical components in storage roots of carrot (cv. Laguna F1). The study included three growth stimulators: Asahi SL, Bio-algeen S 90 and Tytanit. Plots without any foliar application of these growth stimulators served as control treatment. Another factor consisted of the previous crop (spring barley) and stubble crops: tansy phacelia and a mixture of spring vetch and field pea, grown after the harvest of barley and then ploughed in. All the growth stimulators significantly reduced the NO3 content in carrot roots. Asahi SL significantly increased the phenolic content. The effects of the growth stimulators on the macronutrient content in carrot roots were statistically significant in the case of Mg and Na. Stubble cropping contributed to the reduction of nitrates and stimulated an increase in the content of phenolics as well as of P, K, Ca and Mg in carrot roots.

A field experiment was conducted at Landmark University Omu-Aran, Nigeria from June to November 2017 and repeated at the same time in the year 2018 on a nematode infested soil to evaluate the effects of different amounts of Siam weed compost on the performance of root-knot nematode (RKN) infested tomato. The compost was applied a week before planting as soil amendment at the amount of 0.0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.0 t·ha-1, while carbofuran was applied at the rate of 3.0 kg·ha-1. Four weeks old tomato seedlings cultivar ‘Roma VF’, which is susceptible to RKN, was transplanted to already prepared soil. Results of the experiment showed that the compost, especially in the amount 2 t·ha-1 and carbofuran at 3 kg·ha-1, brought about significant reduction of the population of RKN in soil and roots, and a significant increase in the growth and yield of tomato. The result of the experiment showed that Siam compost can be used for the managing root-knot nematodes in tomato cultivation, as an environmentally safe factor.

Opis:
The experiments were carried out on Polish and foreign cultivars of maize, triticale, field bean and field pea. Special attention was given to morphology of seedlings root exposed to soil drought. The root-box method was used to analyze out qualitative and quantitative variation of the plant root system structure. In control conditions, seedlings of the examined cultivars showed differences in the structure of the root system. The results demonstrated a relatively broad variation in the habit of the seedlings root system. However, in the examined cultivars, any common feature or features have not been found which might be essentially correlated with the value of their drought susceptibility index (DSI), except the relations between the dry matter ratio of top part to root (S/R), but found only in triticale and maize. Drought stress reduced the size of the roots particular components. In the drought sensitive cultivars, changes in the number and length of roots were greater than in the drought resistant cultivars, and this referred primarily to the lateral roots. The results suggest that some root morphological traits of crop plant cultivars may be used in breeding practice as indirect selection criteria of plant drought resistance.
W doświadczeniach wykorzystano metodę root-box method przy pomocy której wykonywano jakościową i ilościową analizę budowy systemu korzeniowego opartą o pomiary liczebności, rozmiarów i suchej masy poszczególnych komponentów wykształcanego systemu korzeniowego. U odmian zaliczonych do grupy wrażliwych na suszę obserwowane zmiany liczby i długości poszczególnych komponentów wykształcanego systemu korzeniowego były większe niż u odmian odpornych i dotyczyło to przede wszystkim liczby i długości wykształcanych korzeni bocznych. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że niektóre morfologiczne cechy budowy systemu korzeniowego siewek mogą być użyteczne w hodowli roślin jako pośrednie kryteria selekcji odmian odpornych na suszę.

Opis:
Root system quality is very important for maize growth, development and productivity. The maize breeding, generally, is focused on the performance of aboveground part of plant. It is interesting to compare the relationship between root and shoot of maize studied in divergent conditions. Results of the study of the effects of climatic regimes on variations among maize genotypes were described in paper. The genotype x environment interaction (GEI) are analysed through factorial regression models in order to explicate of the effects of environmental factors on root growth. Chosen statistical method is very helpful tool to evaluate the environmental effect on genetic variability of maize root traits. There was confirmed significant effect of GEI on the root traits. GxE interaction has simply interpretation, because it can be described by the use of linear relations among covariates. It concerns soil and air temperature and water availability (EVTP or rainfall amount).

Effects of 62 isolates (of 41 taxa) of fungi on growth of 1-year-old oak (Quercus robur) seedlings were studied in an inoculation experiment. The fungi were isolated from roots of 80–96-year-old Q. robur that had been subjected to periodic flooding and had symptoms of oak decline. The fungal genera included Alternaria, Aspergillus, Calonectria, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Clonostachys, Corynespora, Cylindrocarpon, Dicyma, Geotrichum, Ilyonectria, Isaria, Metarhizium, Oidiodendron, Ophiostoma, Pezicula, Phialocephala, Phialophora, Pyrenochaeta, Sporendocladia, Sporothrix, Thelonectria, Trichoderma and Trimmatostroma. Mycelial colonies of fungi growing in potato-dextrose broth were used for soil inoculation. Plant growth was assessed 2 years after inoculation, when the plants were 3 years old. Stem lengths, and dry weights of stems, roots and leaves were measured. Stem growth was inhibited by 31 isolates (50%) and root growth by 12 isolates (19%). Stem growth was stimulated by two isolates (3%) and root growth by 17 isolates (27%). The overall ratio of inhibitors to stimulants was 2.1. The proportion of taxa that inhibited stem growth was 16 times greater than that which promoted stem growth. The proportion of taxa that promoted root growth was only 1.5 times greater than that which inhibited root growth. The structure of the fungal communities in periodically flooded oak forests suggests that they are more likely to inhibit than to promote vigour in oaks.

Opis:
For proper growth and development, rhododendrons need acidic soils, whereas calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the substrate markedly limits their growth. In this study, we analysed the reactions of rhododendrons to high concentrations of calcium salts and pH in the substrate. We used 4-month-old seedlings of Rhododendron ‘Cunningham’s White’ and 1.5-year-old seedlings and rooted cuttings of R. ‘Cunningham’s White’ and R. ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’. Their reactions depended mostly on calcium salt type added to the substrate (sulphate or carbonate). An increase in concentrations of phenolic compounds was detected mostly in roots of the plants grown in a substrate with a high calcium carbonate content. Addition of calcium salts to the substrate caused a significant rise in total nonstructural carbohydrates in leaves and roots of the studied plants. As compared to the control, an increase in substrate pH in the variant with calcium carbonate limited the activity of acid phosphatase, while lowering of substrate pH in the variant with calcium sulphate, significantly increased its activity. Along with the rise in substrate pH, a remarkable increase was observed in the activity of nonspecific dehydrogenase (DHA) in the substrate with CaCO3, as compared to the control. Unfavourable soil conditions (high calcium content and alkaline pH) caused a decrease in assimilation of minerals by the studied plants (mostly phosphorus and manganese). Our results show that the major factor limiting rhododendron growth is an increase in substrate pH, rather than an increase in the concentration of calcium ions.

The research was carried out in 2006 within the area of forest nursery in Okalewo, the Forest Inspectorate Skrwilno (Central Poland, at 53º02´N, 19º23´E). The aim of the study was to determine the effects of root pruning in one-year Scots pine seedlings (Pinus sylvestris L.) on their growth after transplanting. The vertical roots of one-year Scots pine seedlings were pruned to the length of 5, 10, 15 i 20 cm and measured. The scope of measurements included: stem length and thickness, total root length, root length within thickness classes, surface root area, root volume as well as the number of root tips and ramifications. The measurements of root systems were performed with the use of a scanner and WinRhizo software. The seedlings were transplanted and were growing in the nursery all through the vegetation season 2006. In October of this year the seedlings were lifted from the ground and measured again at the same scope. Reiterated measurements allowed evaluation of increment characteristics after transplanting. The results indicated negative impacts of intensive root pruning before transplantation on seedling survival rates. Severe pruning of seedling vertical roots had negative effects on increment gained by both above- and underground seedling parts. Pruning roots to 5 cm of length significantly decreased pine seedling survival rate of. On the other hand, 20 cm long roots have no significant effects on seedling survival and increment but they can cause difficulties in seedling nursery cultivation.

Opis:
Three steps of multi-stage selection for more vigorous seminal roots were done in two cross combinations of oat. The total length of roots (TRL) was measured in seedlings of the F₂, F₃ and F₄ generations grown in filter-paper rollers. On average, the finally selected F₅ (or F₆) progenies distinguished by 7-11% improved rooting ability than their midparents. Transgressive forms were selected only in one cross combination. Coefficients of realized heritability for TRL were low and ranged from 0.08 to 0.42 indicatinga relatively high proportion of non-additive gene effects in the variance of TRL. Tolerance of the F₆-progenies to water and nutrient limitations was evaluated in pot and field experiments. Correlated selection effects were dependent upon initial cross combination. Only progenies from one cross combination exhibited an improved drought tolerance at the 8-9 Feekes' stage. The both enhanced rooting and decreased S : R ratio of the F₆-progenies correlated with their improved tolerance to reduced P supply at the 4-leaf stage. However, no significant consistence occurred between indices of the tolerance to reduced nutrition at the vegetative growth and those at field maturity. Performed root selection identified more frequently high yielding genotypes with less stable grain yield. No progenies were obtained that outperform their parents under low-input conditions. It was emphasized that root selection should be accompanied by selection for integrated response components.
