Opis:
The Fifty Shades series has brought erotic fiction to a broader and more mainstream audience than ever before. In its wake, a number of erotic romance series have achieved unprecedented popularity, such as Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and Lisa Renee Jones’ Inside Out series. These books do not fit comfortably into the genres of romance or pornography: rather, they fuse the romantic and pornographic together. This locates the multiple climaxes of pornography within the overarching emotional climax of romance and creates a structure that is both finite and infinite, allowing the books to create both instant and delayed gratification. This article examines The Sheik as a textual forebear to Fifty Shades before moving on to examine the ways in which romance and pornography are fused, overcoming the limits of serialization in romance, and creating a romantic “pornotopia.”

Opis:
The reading practices of women, mediated by a prison library in Portugal, constituted an interesting case study. In Santa Cruz do Bispo prison, female prisoners were increasingly aged and excluded from social groups, less literate, and educated. Many were first-time library users and some were beginning readers. This research aimed to understand their reading practices and preferences, their self-assigned meanings, and the roles of reading in prison. Having become aware that industrial literature romance novels were the most requested items, a critical comparative analysis of the three most requested titles was contrasted with readers’ favorite passages to foster a deeper understanding of their preferences and sustain an integrated analysis. Furthermore, a consensualized definition of a “good read” is presented. The results from ethnography and interviews to readers and staff are analyzed taking into account class, gender, ethnicity, age, occupation, and education of the detainees. Conclusions address the fact that although the prison’s educational service and imprisonment conditions propitiated an increase in reading generally, the library was oriented by educational targets and irresponsive to certain demands expressed by readers. Secondly, women readers were using the available top-selling romance novels to sustain their introspective and prospective work, while reckoning with their past and planning for their future. In addition to this reflexive stance, escapist entertainment and knowledge building were important reading purposes.

Opis:
Polish female romance tourism is a relatively recent phenomenon linked to mass tourism to Middle East and North Africa with Egypt being one of the top travel destinations. Local exotic, travel and leisure time create conditions to enter a romantic relationship with local Muslim men. In this regard Islam is the source of danger and fascination. On the one hand it is about the essentialized submissive position of women, but on the other hand local context brings in the potential of a racialized sexuality. The paper aims to analyze how Islam is narrated and used in discussions at two Polish Internet forums dedicated to female romance tourism in Egypt and Tunisia. The data corpus indicates that information about Islam is used in order to decode, interpret and predict the behavior and motivation of Muslim men.

Opis:
In this article entitled Oksana Robski’s (Not Only) Literary Projects we would liketo briefly present the figure of Oksana Robski, an author of romance novels whois not very well known in Poland, but is very popular in Russia. The collapse ofthe Soviet Union resulted in commercialization of Russian literature, which, among other things, made some writers use various publicity stunts. Among suchstunts, conceiving the so-called “literary projects” comes to the fore. Robski, whoturned her name into a brand, is a prime example here. The writer is associatedwith both sale of colour magazines, luxury furniture or perfumes, as well as withwriting popular romance novels. In order to create the appropriate media image,Robski distorts her own biography and freely talks in the media about her relationshipswith men. However, her popularity is mostly due to the fact that sheknows first-hand the life of Russian oligarchs who are protagonists of her works. Thanks to Oksana Robski’s novels, ordinary Russians have the opportunity to fictionallyvisit residences of the Russian business elite.

However, the dialectometrization of ALiR will allow us not only to analyze the linguistic distance among the varieties of Romania Antiqua, but also to shed light from a quantitative perspective on several issues that have historically raised controversy. Specifically, this paper deals with the Romance subgrouping of the Catalan language, an issue that has been recently reopened by Radatz (2012).

on-existent before the late 1980s, in recent years urban fantasy / paranormal romance has become the prevailing form of the monstrous Gothic in popular culture. In little more than two decades, urban fantasy has evolved from striking new genre innovations, coming to constitute a set of nowfamiliar genre conventions. Yet while urban fantasy has risen meteorically in popularity, especially in the last decade, it remains surprisingly understudied as a coherent genre. McLennon in the article Defining Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance: Crossing Boundaries of Genre, Media, Self and Other in New Supernatural Worlds provides a clear definition and history of urban fantasy / paranormal romance as a genre. She argues that this genre is both formally and thematically concerned with destabilising new Gothic boundaries—boundaries of genre, of media, of self and Other. Finally, McLennon suggests that these formal and thematic challenges to boundaries offer one explanation for this genre’s broad popularity. The article thus seeks to provide a platform from which we can better analyse and understand both this genre as a whole, and its individual texts, across a variety of media.

A few aspects of text model have been analyzed: structural, stylistic and functional. There are three basic cultural contexts of genre changes: 1. archaecultural, 2. macrocultural, 3. microcultural. Each of them is connected with various factors and aspects of the genres. The analysis allows treating the two chosen genres as “drifting” ones, because they are very “fluent”, they migrate from a discourse to a discourse during their historyfrom the Old-Polish period to contemporary times.

The paper focuses upon the latest adult romance novels that appeared after Fifty Shades of Grey, anal-yses their stylistic dimensions and argues with the essay Hard-Core Romance by Eva Illouz. At first the genre is defined, above all on the basis of its medial presence (chapter 1. Genre). Furthermore tempera-ture metaphors in two representative texts of the genre (E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey and Sylvia Day Bared to You) are analyzed as stylistic (chapter 2. Conventional Temperature Metaphors) as well as rhetorical artifacts (chapter 3. Rhetoric of Metaphor). In conclusion the question of language in the novels and its usefulness in the task described by Illouz is raised (chapter 4. A New Love Order?). The new adult romance novel seems to be a conventional cultural text of little rhetorical power, thus unable to carry important social ideas.

Opis:
In Sardinian, Friulian, Rhaeto-Romance, Occitan (not considered in this work) and Franco-Provençal varieties spoken in peripheral Italian areas, the -i inflection is not totally eradicated but interacts with plural -s. The coexistence of -s and -i reflects syntactic constraints. Specifically, -i is in complementary distribution with -s or it combines with –s, giving rise to a duplicated lexicalization of plurality. In any event, it is specialized for a subset of the morpho-syntactic contexts. The distribution of -i generally involves the D domain, i.e. determiners and clitics. In some cases, -i is limited to the D elements. Different agreement systems on D and on N emerge, recalling partial or asymmetric agreement phenomena known in literature. Moreover, in the relevant varieties (-)i is in turn the inflection of the dative clitic; this suggests that (-)i is endowed with a slightly different content from plural -s, that, on the contrary, shows no connection with dative.

This article aims to propose a treatment of the internal morphological organization of words, based on the idea that morphology is part of syntactic computation. We disagree with Distributed Morphology model, whereby morphology is identified with a post-syntactic component conveying an information ‘separated from the original locus of that information in the phrase marker’ (Embick and Noyer 2001: 557) by rules manipulating syntactic nodes. We also consider inadequate the costly and complex syntactic structures that cartographic approach maps into inflectional strings. We pursue a different conceptualization assuming that morphology is governed by the same rules and principles of syntax. Sub-word elements, including inflections, thematic exponents and clitics, are fully interpretable and enter (pair-)merge operations (in the sense of Chomsky 2020a,b, 2021) according to their content, giving rise to complex words.

It disregards the oriental origin of the merchants who will trade in Blancheflour. The poem focuses on wealth and ignores the widespread nature of medieval poverty. Respect for the merchants in the text foreshadows the later high social status of slave traders in England. Slavery is romanticized in the poem and the reality of serfdom is not included. The text is similar to the later “mercantile romances” and it is a mercantile text responding to the worldview of merchants, who were probably the text’s audience and to whose expectations the plot was adjusted.

Carlo MartinezUniversità “G. d’Annunzio” di Chieti-Pescara, Italy “The thin delights of moonshine and romance”: Romance, Tourism, and Realism in Hawthorne’s The Marble Faun Abstract: Hawthorne’s involvement with the logic of the tourism of his day is a key aspect of his development as a fiction writer. Starting from a discussion of the early sketch “My Visit to Niagara” the article argues that the discourse of tourism, with its protocols and practices, is for Hawthorne a fertile breeding ground and conceptual framework for the elaboration of a new rationale and a new aesthetic for the fiction writing he calls “romance.” It then explores how tourism resonates in the romance which takes it as its central thematic concern: The Marble Faun. Hawthorne’s last completed long work of fiction represents a moment of artistic and personal crisis for the author, who finds his notion of romance writing caught in a sort of double bind created by the touristic nature of his stay in Italy. As the plot of the novel suggests, in his efforts to extricate himself from the situation, Hawthorne, envisioned and experimented with a new kind of writing that led him to revise and alter radically the romance form he had previously elaborated in favor of a much more realistic style of fiction. The relation between morpho-syntactic structure and its externalization into interpretive levels is the topic of this article. In many languages, typically in Romance and Albanian varieties, modal contexts, specifically imperative and infinitive, and negation, give rise to phenomena of clitic reordering and an interesting micro-variation. Imperative differs from declarative sentences in selecting enclisis except in negative contexts. Moreover, in Albanian mesoclisis appears in the 2nd plural person of imperative, between the verbal base and the person inflection. A similar distribution characterizes Calabro-Lucanian varieties spoken in Lausberg area, in contact with Arbëresh (Italo-Albanian) dialects. This article proposes to analyze the influence of modal contexts on the lexicalization of object clitics (OCls) and their different behavior in connection to their referential properties. Our descriptive and theoretical starting point is the representational morpho-syntactic approach adopted in Manzini and Savoia (2011 and subsequent works; see Section 5).

In this article, I look at contemporary romances as a source of transgressive pleasure that may inspire its audience to reject patriarchy. I focus solely on romances between a man and a woman with emphasis on the psychological dimension of the female character upon her trajectory from an object of desire to the man’s ideal partner. I argue that the pleasure of romance is, indeed, a means towards the dismissal of patriarchy. Drawing on feminist theory, I contend that romance constitutes a nucleus of a feminine ideal that women may use as a comparative reference point for their real-life relationships, revealing any problematic and inadequate behavior of real-life partners. Even though romance pertains to the prescripts of patriarchy, I argue that it can be seen as an intertext: a product of the interlanguage used to translate the male discourse to the female bodily experience. In producing and consuming the romance, women can contrast this experience of the feminine ideal with the lack of pleasure patriarchy entails for them. In this respect, the romance possesses a transgressive power that may facilitate women’s realization of their dissatisfaction and the refusal of their role as emotional labor.

The article deals with the reduplications in Latin and in Romance languages. While in Latin there were only reduplications of monosyllables, Romance languages have a lot of polysyllabic (mostly disyllabic) reduplications. This development could arise due to a bigger expressivity of vulgar Latin mixed with vernacular languages and to their contacts with other languages: Germanic (mostly English and German), Celtic, Slavic, Turkic and Hungarian, in which the polysyllabic reduplication is the most common.

Opis:
The paper presents literary images of medieval women in four Middle English romances, viz. King Horn, Sir Isumbras, Havelok the Dane and Sir Gawain and the Green Night. Its aim is to identify some conventional patterns of representation of female characters in the literary works classified as different subtypes of the genre of romance, namely ancestral romance (King Horn, Havelok the Dane), homiletic romance (Sir Isumbras) and Arthurian romance (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). After Sharon Farmer and other feminist critics, the concept of gender is interpreted as one of the major categories of difference in medieval English society. This argument is supported by the analysis of the construction of female characters in the romances in question. However, while it is important to remember that the society of medieval England was to a large extent male-governed and male-dominated, which is the reason for the apparent centrality of male protagonists in medieval English literature, the function of female characters in literary works of that period is not necessarily secondary. The paper focuses on the importance of women in presenting the protagonist’s genealogy and on selected strategies of representation, such as reversal of gender roles or marginalization of female characters. The essay attempts to demonstrate that the category of gender, as it is seen in the medieval texts, cannot be reduced to a simplified model of binary oppositions, since the romances also introduce the complexity of power relations and tensions between the sexes.

Opis:
This paper looks at the influence of hagiography, or the writing of the lives of saints, on Richard Johnson’s wildly popular text, The Seven Champions of Christendom (1596). The author focuses on the character Sabra, who represents a female saint figure in opposition to her not-so-saint-like husband St George, in order to show how the tradition of hagiography is changed in the sixteenth-century as it moves away from its pious and medieval origins. A text that has been mostly overlooked by literary scholars, The Seven Champions of Christendom emerges as more than simply a part of the culture of popular literary fiction of the 1590s as it considers Protestant hagiography and its cultural pertinence at the time Johnson wrote.

Opis:
The article deals with Czech film parodies that were produced primarily during the period of the state-directed cinema (1945–1989). Their development was connected to a campaign against trash literature, which attempted in the 1930s and 1940s to suppress different popular genres that were considered worthless and harmful. Parodies caricatured conventions of disapproved genres (romance, western, detective story), but at the same time, maintained an awareness of them and eventually also functioned as a substitute for them. The construction of parodies was often based on the accumulation of motifs of a given genre and their escalation to absurdity. The technique of confrontation of disparate elements was also repeatedly used: the conventionality and artificiality of the world of the parodied genre was unveiled as an encounter with the world, which was presented as real and ordinary.
