Opis:
This paper shows the impact of material nonlinearity of a dam-foundation rock system on seismic performance of Oued Fodda concrete gravity dam, located at northwestern side of Algeria. For the purpose, a three-dimensional dam-foundation rock system finite element model is employed in analyses. The hydrodynamic interaction between reservoir water and dam-foundation system is implicitly taken into consideration by the Westergaard approach using surface finite elements added to dam-fluid and foundation-fluid interfaces. The concrete material model is used to present the cracking of dam concrete under a seismic load the using smeared crack approach based on the Willam and Warnke failure criterion. The materially nonlinear analysis for both dam concrete and foundation rock is performed using Drucker- -Prager model. According to numerical results, tensile stresses and maximum strains reduce significantly in the materially nonlinear model. In addition, the cracking areas in the dam decrease also when material nonlinearity characteristics of the dam-foundation rock system is considered in analyses.

Opis:
The Sorkol rock salt deposit is located in the south-eastern part of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the Żambyl district, the Sarysu region. This area is characterized by a temperate, dry, extremely continental climate with large diurnal temperature variations. Such extreme and unfavorable climatic conditions led to the desertification of this area and significantly accelerated the evaporation of shallow reservoirs fed by highly mineralized waters, which resulted in the formation of local salines. Analysed salts are located in the Chu-Sarysu sedimentary basin in a series of Permian evaporites at a depth of approx. 240 to approx. 520 m below sea level and the total thickness about 280 m. This series includes fine-crystalline salt to coarse-crystalline salt, but the whole salt series is heavily contaminated with consolidated clay minerals locally called argillite and also iron hydroxides, which will significantly affect the efficient exploitation of this deposit in the future. Salts from the Sorkol deposit have completely different features than the salts from European (Permian) deposits described so far in Polish literature.

Opis:
During the Early Miocene (Early Burdigalian/Eggenburgian) marine transgression at the southeastern margin of the Bohemian Massif, gradual flooding occurred along a rocky coast on granitic bedrock of the Thaya Batholith under high-energy, wave-dominated, microtidal and mixed fair-weather and storm conditions. Deposits of the Burgschleinitz Formation overlie a basal unconformity above a subaerial weathered basement surface (transgressive erosional surface) and are interpreted as a transgressive systems tract. The deposits can be divided into four facies associations/depositional environments, i.e., upper-shoreface, foreshore, gravelly beach and backshore/lagoon. Two stages of transgression and successive overtopping of the basement, with different coastal physiographies, were documented. During the initial stage of transgression a barrier island system developed with relatively fine-grained deposits, reflecting the flooding of the distant parts of the Thaya Batholith with a relative flat basement morphology. The subsequent continuation of the transgression led to the flooding of the more proximal parts of the Thaya Batholith with a steeper relief and formation of a rocky shoreline with deposition of gravelly sedi- ments along palaeo-sea cliffs or wave-cut platforms. While gravel clasts of the deposits investigated originate directly from the underlying granites of the Thaya Batholith, provenance studies show that metamorphic rocks of the Moravian Superunit in the hinterland were the main source of sands. This distant source material was probably delivered mainly by small creeks and alluvial fans to the nearshore. Significant differences in heavy mineral composition of the same formation in the wider vi cinity indicate primarily local sources and rapid deposition with subordinate longshore transport, which may reflect a complex coastal palaeogeography. The Lower Miocene deposits of the Burgschleinitz Formation investigated are a rare example of ancient rocky shore deposits, which generally have low preservation potential in the geological record.

Opis:
A multi-disciplinary approach is indispensable for adequate acid rock drainage (ARD), mineral leaching impact, and groundwater management. Groundwater is a valuable resource, and it is critical to protect as well as mitigate the effects of pollution such as ARD in the mining environment. Mine waste storage facilities (waste rocks and tailings) are potential ARD sources capable of degrading groundwater reserves. This research investigated and reported the application of a case study of multivariate statistical and spatial variability of selected parameters associated with ARD in groundwater around WRD and TSF at mine sites. Water quality analysis data of seventy water samples from 10 boreholes located at the WRD and TSF mine were utilised in this study. The correlation matrix and principal components analysis was applied to the data set to determine the associated variability in groundwater in relation to ARD. Geostatistical analysis was used to produce contour maps to ARD principal components of the study site, using ordinary kriging of the best fit models. The application of multivariate statistical and geospatial analysis in groundwater quality assessment with coupled soil and groundwater modelling of flow and transport at waste rock dump and tailings storage sites provides an essential tool for exploratory data analysis, and spatial extent determination of the relationship between various data sets significant to acid rock drainage.

Opis:
Variations in rock mass properties are well-established in rock mechanics and underground mining. The literature is replete with methods of assessing them and determining values that are used in design or numerical analysis. In this paper, a simplified 3D model is constructed for a tabular orebody in the Canadian Shield and instability is quantified using the ”brittle shear ratio” criterion to calculate the volume at risk. A 1-4-7 stope pillar sequence is implemented on four active levels, and three variations in the properties of the host formation are assessed. It is observed that the locations of ore at risk follow the formations of stope pillars and are then transferred to the sill pillars above and below. Instability in the footwall and the hanging wall is observed to be lesser in volume but remains persistent. With the allocation of weak properties to the host rock, at-risk volumes increase in the orebody, footwall, and hanging wall, and the reverse trend occurs with strong greenstone properties. It is concluded that the stress increase in the orebody is due to transfers from the weaker host rock, while that in the greenstone formation is due to the use of a lower compressive strength value.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of field mapping and structural analyses conducted within the landslides situated near Ludwikowice K³odzkie, in the central part of the Nowa Ruda Basin (Middle Sudetes, SW Poland). The area affected by mass movements is located within the eastern limb of the Intra-Sudetic Synclinorium (Głuszyca Monocline) composed of Upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian (Rotliegend) sedimentary rocks. Nine individual landslide forms, ranging in area from 0.5 to 22.7 ha, including two landslide complexes (Sokółka landslides, 49.7 ha in total area) have been identified and described in terms of their origin and geological conditions. Studies of landslide morphology and structural analysis allow recognition of several types of mass movements. They include: (i) rotational landslides (landslides Sokółka 1-3 and 5); (ii) translational slides (landslides Miłków 1-3); (iii) deep-seated, compound landslides (landslide Sokółka 4), and (iv) topple evolving into deep-seated rotational (?) slide (Sławosz landslide). The studies repeatedly confirm the usefulness of analyses of LiDAR digital elevation models coupled with field investigations and structural analyses.

This article discusses various aspects of rock musical, focusing on its relationship with the aesthetics of rock music. The introduction provides a methodological approach to this type of a musical theatre work. The existing concepts related to this term are presented, a distinction is made between the category of rock opera and rock musical, and an original definition of this subgenre is proposed. The next section explores the relationship between rock music and rock musical in terms of authenticity. Differences and similarities in the performing practice are presented for both artistic forms along with their sound representations. The final section of the article analyses two prominent musicals created in the early stages of the subgenre development – Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. Having set certain boundary conditions for fusing rock with theatre, both productions are analysed for their structural components appropriate for the musical form (musical elements, dramatic elements of the work) in combination with rock aesthetics and the performance of this type of work on stage.

Opis:
The present study shows the results of a 2D local seismic response (LSR) analysis, simulated for a geomechanical model consisting of a layered carbonate rock mass with hypogean karst caves and a structural–lithostratigraphic complex setting, in an area within the Municipality of Turi (Apulia, Italy). In this case study a Distinct Element Code (DEM) code (UDEC) was used for the LSR simulations conducted on a model both in the absence and in the presence of two overlapping karst caves. The preliminary stress–strain model analysis show some tensile yielding points clustered on the roof of the upper karst cave, already in static conditions, and the phenomenon becomes even more noticeable in dynamic conditions. This is perfectly in agreement with the real occurrence of a sinkhole that brought to the light the underlying karst cave, in the case study area, in the recent past. The amplification/deamplification factor (FA) was calculated as the ratio of the top value to the bottom value in the model, both of the max X-acceleration and of the spectral Fourier amplitude in three different ranges of frequencies, in order to estimate the effects of LSR on the X-component of the seismic input. According to the previous studies, the results obtained show a generalised deamplification of the seismic ground motion at the top of the model, both without and with underground karst caves, caused by the presence of the upper karst cave and by the seismic energy absorption because of layers’ discontinuity.

The purpose of the work was to select and validate the optimal method for analyzing sulfur content in drilling cores, including those from coal seams. In addition, research was done for petroleum. As part of the work, the results of sulfur content testing were compared by means of elemental analysis in 2 analyzers: in the EA 1108 elemental analyzer, which gives the possibility of burning samples at temperatures up to 1080°C, which is not always sufficient for geological samples, and in the Leco CR12 analyzer expanded with a module for determination of sulfur, which gives the opportunity to perform the analysis at 1350°C. In the course of elemental analysis, free and bound sulfur is transformed into sulfur dioxide SO2, the content of which is measured by means of various detectors: the thermal conductivity detector (TCD) in the EA 1108 analyzer, or the infrared detector in the Leco CR 12 analyzer. Before the comparative tests, the method of sulfur analysis in the Leco CR 12 analyzer was validated. Comparative studies were carried out for rock samples, for coals, for petroleum and for kerogen. As part of the work, elemental analyses of sulfur content were carried out for 23 coal samples, 22 rock samples, 5 kerogen samples separated from these rocks and for 9 petroleum samples. Tested coal and rock material samples came from drill cores from exploratory wells. The methods used for kerogen and for coals with sulfur content over 0.75 wt % have been shown to be compatible. For oils, compatibility was observed above 0.3% sulfur content. Much worse compliance was obtained for rock matter from drilling cores, characterized by dispersion of organic matter. For samples with low sulfur content, determinations in the EA 1108 analyzer provide more reliable results. For media with a high dispersion of organic matter, such as Istebna Beds, the results of determinations in the Leco CR12 analyzer are more reliable due to the size of the analytical sample.

The article presents the results of the analysis data of the roof rocks geotechnical parameters in the conditions of the deep copper ore of the KGHM Polish Cooper mines. Using single factor analysis of variance and comparing means in two samples, the significance of differences between individual lithological layers (dolomite, anhydrite and rocks on their contact (dolomite-anhydrite breccia)) was evaluated in the aspect of constructing numerical simulations of the behavior of roof rocks above mining excavations. Based on the results of previous studies described in the works (Galiński 2005; Galiński, Lis and Mróz 2003), it was proposed to use Fisher–Snedecor analysis and t-Student test in order to justify the decision to consider individual lithological layers in numerical modeling of the rock mass around mining excavations. The problem raised in the article concerns the selection of lithological layers consider in numerical models of rock mass. Assuming too general (average values) physico-mechanical parameters in the simulation will generate incorrect results. On the other hand, consider of more lithological layers with insignificantly different physico-mechanical parameters may prove unnecessary, because this will not affect the accuracy of the results obtained.

Opis:
Handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometers with energy dispersion (EDXRF) are increasingly used to determine the chemical composition of rocks for the oil and gas industry. The results of our research allow to create or support the lithological interpretation based on mineralogical models. In the case of quantitative interpretation based on the results of measurements using a handheld XRF device, high accuracy of measurements is required. This paper presents the problems to which attention should be paid when applying the assumed methodology, mainly related to the underestimated percentages for light (main) elements. The tests were carried out on powdered samples of drill cores taken from borehole directed to Rotliegend rocks. The measurements were carried out using Bruker’s XRF S1 TITAN spectrometer. The calibration and correction tests led to the elimination of two factors affecting the inaccuracy of the analyses. The first is the progressive aging of the X-ray tube, which should be checked by conducting systematic measurements of the standard reference material. The second concerns the effect of a change in the density of the sample after grinding, which has a significant impact on light elements (mainly silicon and aluminium), causing a decrease in absolute values in the results of measurements using a handheld XRF device. Due to the type of rock material analysed, the focus was on the calibration of the results of the main elements building the Rotliegend sandstone rock matrix. The paper presents the possibility of calibrating the results directly in the device, which results in obtaining calibrated results after each measurement, as well as calibration of results in an external file. By using external calibration, errors caused by changing the rock matrix can be avoided while ensuring that possibility the results can be recalculated. The resulting calibration coefficients are applicable to the Rotliegend rocks and the XRF spectrometer with current software and GeoChem calibrations provided by Bruker. A change in any of the factors requires re-testing and recalibration of the results. Mineralogical models prepared based on XRF analyses can be used in the future, if those appropriate calibration coefficients are used.

Analizom poddano dwa typy różowych soli kamiennych, wykorzystywanych w celach spożywczych, dostępnych powszechnie w sprzedaży detalicznej. Przebadano ich skład chemiczny oraz część nierozpuszczalną. Pierwszy typ stanowiły cechsztyńskie różowe sole kamienne eksploatowane w kopalni Kłodawa, natomiast do porównania wytypowano tzw. różowe sole himalajskie, wieku neoproterozoicznego, wydobywane w Pakistanie.
Two types of table pink rock salts a available on the Polish market were tested. The first type is Zechstein pink rock salts from Poland, excavated in the Kłodawa salt mine, and the second type is so called pink Himalayan rock salts (Neoproterozoic age) obtained in Pakistan. In rock salts samples, basic macroelements and a wide range of microelements, including rare-earth elements, were determined using absorption and emission atomic spectrometry with flame atomization (FAAS and F-AES) and inductively coupled plasma with mass detection (ICP-QQQ). Salt samples of both types were dissoluted and insoluble matter were analysed (qualitative and quantitative) also. The results of chemical analysis of both pink rock salt types were compared, with analysis of white rock salts from the same places also.

It is recommended to use this model to represent a first-order approximation of soil behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to accommodate soil constitutive models for the specific geotechnical problems. In this paper, three soil constitutive models with different accuracy were applied by using the two-dimensional finite element software PLAXIS to study the behavior of pile-supported wharf embedded in rock dike, under the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. These models are: a linear-elastic perfectly plastic model (MC model), an elastoplastic model with isotropic hardening (HS model), and the Hardening Soil model with an extension to the small-strain stiffness (HSS model). A typical pile-supported wharf structure with batter piles from the western United States ports was selected to perform the study. The wharf included cut-slope (sliver) rock dike configuration, which is constituted by a thin layer of rockfill overlaid by a slope of loose sand. The foundation soil and the backfill soil behind the wharf were all dense sand. The soil parameters used in the study were calibrated in numerical soil element tests (Oedometer and Triaxial tests). The wharf displacement and pore pressure results obtained using models with different accuracy were compared to the numerical results of Heidary-Torkamani et al.[28] It was found that the Hardening Soil model with small-strain stiffness (HSS model) gives clearly better results than the MC and HS models. Afterwards, the pile displacements in sloping rockfill were analyzed. The displacement time histories of the rock dike at the top and at the toe were also exposed. It can be noted that during the earthquake there was a significant lateral ground displacement at the upper part of the embankment due to the liquefaction of loose sand. This movement caused displacement at the dike top greater than its displacement at the toe. Consequently, the behavior of the wharf was affected and the pile displacements were important, specially the piles closest to the dike top.

Opis:
Przedstawiono przykład analizy wrażliwości rezultatów otrzymywanych w modelowaniu systemów woda–skała–gaz do celów sekwestracji gazów kwaśnych (CO2 i H2S) na zmiany parametrów kinetyki reakcji.
The paper presents an example of sensitivity analysis of results obtained in modelling of water–rock–gas systems, for the purpose of acid gas sequestration (CO2 and H2S), for changes in reaction kinetics parameters. The reference level was compared to the results, including the elevated or reduced reaction rate constants of K-feldspar and clinochlore. Differences in the identified petrotextural and physicochemical effects are seemingly insignificant, as they result from the modification of a single parameter only. In fact, when there are many parameters describing the modelled system, the associated effects may interfere with each other.
