Opis:
Control strategies for nonlinear dynamical systems often make use of special system properties, which are, for example, differential flatness or exact input-output as well as input-to-state linearizability. However, approaches using these properties are unavoidably limited to specific classes of mathematical models. To generalize design procedures and to account for parameter uncertainties as well as modeling errors, an interval arithmetic approach for verified simulation of continuoustime dynamical system models is extended. These extensions are the synthesis, sensitivity analysis, and optimization of open-loop and closed-loop controllers. In addition to the calculation of guaranteed enclosures of the sets of all reachable states, interval arithmetic routines have been developed which verify the controllability and observability of the states of uncertain dynamic systems. Furthermore, they assure asymptotic stability of controlled systems for all possible operating conditions. Based on these results, techniques for trajectory planning can be developed which determine reference signals for linear and nonlinear controllers. For that purpose, limitations of the control variables are taken into account as further constraints. Due to the use of interval techniques, issues of the functionality, robustness, and safety of dynamic systems can be treated in a unified design approach. The presented algorithms are demonstrated for a nonlinear uncertain model of biological wastewater treatment plants.

In this article conclusions from nearly 10 years of collaboration with Polish and German Engineer-to-Order (ETO) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from mechanical sector was presented. Research objective was to highlight common organizational problems they are dealing with, which prevent them from transition to Mass Customizers. As a result, a concept of 5 foundations for robust process design was proposed: procedures, product selection, machining philosophy, planning and storage, cross-functional teams. More practical solutions from this field have to be published to fill the research gap.

Opis:
Since G.E.P. Box introduced central composite designs in early fifties of 20th century, the classic design of experiments (DoE) utilizes response surface models (RSM), however usually limited to the simple form of low-degree polynomials. In the case of small size datasets, the conformity with the normal distribution has very weak reliability and it leads to very uncertain assessment of a parameter statistical significance. The bootstrap approach appears to be better solution than – theoretically proved but only asymptotically equal – t distribution based evaluation. The authors presents the comparison of the RSM model evaluated by a classic method and bootstrap approach.

Opis:
The design of experiment (DoE) is a methodology originated from early 1920s when Fisher’s papers created the analysis of variance and first known experimental designs: latin squares. It is focused on a construction of empirical models based on measurements obtained from specifically structured and driven experiments. Its development resulted in the constitution of four distinctive branches recognized by the industry: factorials (full or fractional), Taguchi’s robust design, Shainin’s Red-X® and a response surface methodology (RSM). On one hand, the well-known success stories of this methodology implementations promise great benefits, while on other hand, the mathematical complexity of mathematical and statistical assumptions very often lead to improper use and wrong inferences. The possible solution to avoid such mistakes is the expert system supporting the design of experiments and subsequently the analysis of obtained data. The authors propose the outline of such system and provides the general analysis of the ontology and related inference rules.

In process robustness studies, it is desirable to minimize the influence of noise factors on the system and simultaneously determine the levels of controllable factors optimizing the overall response or outcome. In the cases when a random effects model is applicable and a fixed effects model is assumed instead, an increase in the variance of the coefficient vector should be expected. In this paper, the impacts of this assumption on the results of the experiment in the context of robust parameter design are investigated. Furthermore, two criteria are considered to determine the optimum settings for the control factors. In order to better understand the proposed method and to evaluate its performances, a numerical example for the case of 'the smaller the better' is included.

Opis:
Topology optimization is one of the optimization applications in the field of infrastructure or truss structure design. Aiming to find the optimal connectivity bar by determining the best node leads to minimizing compliance. Robust optimization is used to conquer the uncertainty of external load parameters that are continuous and convex. The Robust Topology Optimization model uses semidefinite programming with an ellipsoidal uncertainty set. To solve the model, we use a modeling system called CVX, CVX uses the object-oriented features of MATLAB to turn it into an optimization modelling language: optimization variables can be declared and constraints and objectives specified using natural MATLAB syntax. The results of numerical simulations using CVX in the Robust Truss Topology Design (RTTD) model obtained an optimal robust solution, where the truss is resistant to load uncertainty for single-load or multi-load.

This paper presents a case study on the design of a robust controller for the depth of anesthesia (DoA) induced by the drug propofol. This process is represented by a linear model together with a non-parametric uncertainty description that is evaluated using a patient model bank with 20 patients undergoing sedation. By using H∞ methods, the controller is aimed to comply with robust stability and performance specifications for the class of patient models considered. A minimization problem of sensitivity and complementary sensitivity is made to design the controller. The controller that results from this procedure is approximated by a controller with a lower order, that in turn is redesigned in discrete time for computer control application. The resulting controller is evaluated in simulations using a realistic nonlinear model of DoA.

Przedstawiono też przybliżony sposób identyfikacji tych aproksymacji. Metody mogą być także wykorzystane w regulatorach samonastrajających PID.
Two approximate methods for design of PID controllers for aperiodic processes with time delay are presented. The first method is based on the Nyquist stability criterion, and yields a robust controller that ensures system stability in the presence of constrained perturbations experienced by the unknown process with the known nominal model. The second method yields a controller that ensures a specified overshoot while the controlled process is approximated by first and second order time lags with time delay. An approximate method for identification of these models is also presented. The methods considered are also suitable for being used for self-tuning of PID controllers.

Opis:
The paper deals with the impact of manufacturing tolerances of plies thicknesses on optimal design of multi-layered laminated plates in compression. It is assumed that the considered tolerances are represented by the maximum acceptable deviation of every individual ply thickness from its nominal design value. The robustness of the optimum is achieved diminishing the buckling load amplitude factor by the product of arbitrary assumed tolerances and appropriate sensitivities. The discussed optimization problem is solved numerically by the direct enumeration method. The proposed approach is illustrated with examples of the rectangular multi-layered laminated plate design under uni- and biaxial compression. The achieved results emphasise the robustness of the proposed method compared to the approaches with ignored tolerances.

In the paper the problem of ship autopilot design based on feedback linearization method combined with the robust control approach, is considered. At first the nonlinear ship model (of Norrbin type) is linearized with the use of the simple system nonlinearity cancellation. Next, bearing in mind that exact values of the model parameters are not known, the ensuing inaccuracies are taken as disturbances acting on the system. Thereby is obtained a linear system with an extra term representing the uncertainty which can be treated by using robust, H∞optimal control techniques. The performed simulations of ship course-changing process confirmed a high performance of the proposed controller despite the assumed significant errors of its parameters.

Additionally, easy control of the generalization ability is obtained using the structural risk minimization induction principle from statistical learning theory. Finally, examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the introduced method.

The paper presents several solutions to the discrete-time generalized predictive (GPC) controller problem, including an anticipative filtration mechanism, which are suitable for plants with nonzero transportation delays. Necessary modifications of the GPC design procedure required for controlling plants based on their non-minimal models are discussed in detail. Although inevitably invoking the troublesome pole-zero cancellation problem, such models can be used in adaptive systems as a remedy for the uncertainty or variability of the model order. The purpose of this paper is to present a complete GPC controller design for delay plants that is robust to the overparameterization of the plant model. Refined conditions for the existence and stability of GPC control solutions in terms of pertinent design parameters are given, and explicit forms of closed-loop characteristic polynomials are provided. The issue of identifying the model cancellation order is also considered, and practical solutions are proposed. The presented ideas are illustrated numerically.
