Opis:
Pyrite (FeS2) is known as a sulfide that provides energy for various pyrometallurgical processes (fusion and conversion). There are several studies related to the evaluation of pyrite oxidation mechanisms at high temperatures, obtaining discrepancies in the products generated. In our work, the novelty of our research would be to obtain the thermochemical oxidation mechanism of FeS2 by using conventional thermogravimetric methods. The oxidative roasting of pyrite from 550 to 800°C was analyzed for an oxygen concentration of 5.07 to 28.06 kPa of oxygen and particle size between 12.3 to 33.8 microns. The results showed that the pyrite proceeded by sequential roasting: first, it produced an intermediate compound, pyrrhotite (Fe7S8), which was later oxidized to generate hematite (Fe2O3), both stages validated by weight loss of the sample as well as by analysis by DRX. Each stage had a different roasting speed as it was also influenced differently by different parameters. The temperature and particle size favored the rate of pyrrhotite generation, and the oxygen concentration favored the rate of hematite formation. The first-order kinetic equation ln (1-XPy) represented the roasting of the first stage (FeS2 → Fe7S8), with a calculated activation energy of 70.1 kJ/mol. The order of reaction was 0.5 concerning the partial pressure of oxygen and inversely proportional to the initial particle radius.

The presence of arsenic in zinc sulphide concentrates is particularly harmful, because it creates problems in zinc electrolysis. The main source of arsenic in non-ferrous metallurgy is arsenopyrite (FeAsS). In oxidative roasting of zinc concentrates, FeAsS oxidizes to arsenic oxides (As2O3, As2O5). In this connection a natural FeAsS was examined, and also the distribution of arsenic in the products of the roasting process, the cycle of sulphuric acid obtaining and the leaching of zinc calcine were studied. The arsenic contamination of soils in the vicinity of nonferrous metals smelter KCM SA, Plovdiv, Bulgaria as a result of zinc and lead productions has been studied.

Copper slag differs by chemical composition and structure, depending on the type of processing. Copper slag typically contains about 1 wt.% copper and 40 wt.% iron depending upon the initial ore quality and type of furnace used. The aim is to produce a typical foundry pig iron with the chemical composition of C > 3.40 wt.%, Si 1.40 to 1.80 wt.%, Mn 0.30 to 0.90 wt.%, P < 0.03 wt.% and S < 0.03 wt.% from copper slag. But foundry pig iron manufactured from copper slag contains a high sulphur content. Therefore, this study examines how to conduct desulphurization. Desulphurization roasting and reduction smelting with desulphurization additives used to remove sulphur from the copper slag. The results showed that desulphurization effect of desulphurization roasting is poor but when combined with reduction smelting with CaO addition is possible to manufacture low sulphur pig iron from copper smelting slag.

In this study, the extraction of lithium from zinnwaldite concentrate containing 0.25% Li was investigated. The run-of-mine ore originated from nepheline syenite rocks in Kırşehir, Turkey, and contained 216.3 ppm Li. Firstly, the ore was beneficiated by a flotation process to increase the lithium content. Then, it was subjected to roasting and water leaching processes, respectively. In the roasting process, calcite and gypsum were used as additives to form dissoluble lithium sulfate for the next process. Additionally, the effect of roasting temperatures (750, 850, 950, and 1000°C) and times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 240 min) was examined along with different ratios of additives to concentrate to find the optimal conditions. Accordingly, the calcined product from the roasting process was dissolved in water by determining the optimal leaching temperature, time, and water/solid ratio. Consequently, a lithium product was obtained from the concentrate with 93.3% extraction efficiency. Finally, the mother liquor contained 30 mg/dm3 Li, the production of Li2CO3 from mother liquor will be investigated in case of production of the sample at the optimal conditions of roasting and leaching in further studies.

Opis:
In China, stone coal is an important source of vanadium. The use of roasting–floatation for the pre-concentration of vanadium bearing mica from vanadium bearing stone coal was investigated based on its mineralogical characteristics. The results showed that the vanadium occurred in mica minerals and the main gangue minerals were coal, calcite, and quartz. The pre-concentration process comprises three key steps: roasting, desliming, and flotation. The coal was completely removed by roasting at 700 °C for an hour. Slime was concentrated and the subsequent flotation pulp was improved by desliming. Calcite was removed by reverse flotation and mica was concentrated by positive floatation. During the process, the grade of V2O5 was increased from 0.71% to 1.14%, and 46.18% of the tailings were rejected. The leaching rate of vanadium was increased from 30.49% of raw ore to 69.15% of the concentrate which was an increase of about 40% at the same leaching process. This technique may promote the efficient utilization of stone coal resources.

Magnetizing roasting is an important pre-treatment technique for beneficiation of hematite and limonite ores. Reduction mechanisms of these iron minerals have been fully studied while the mechanism of reduction of chlorite is not well understood. In this study, a reduction roasting study examining the phase change of chlorite with roasting temperature was undertaken. The major finding from this study was that chlorite partially was reduced to magnetite by carbon at 750 ⁰C, and the newly formed magnetite was finely disseminated within quartz and olivine. It was demonstrated that these locked magnetite particles would be reported to iron concentrate by low intensity magnetic separation resulting in high impurity content, especially SiO2 and Al2O3 contents in the concentrate.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of high voltage electrical stimulation (330 V, 17 Hz, 120 s) of beef half-carcass and heat treatment on tenderness and water holding capacity of meat. The experimental material was a semimembranosus muscle derived from Polish Holstein-Friesian heifers (n=12). In the experiment, a forced and natural air circulation ovens were used; the raw material was heated at 170ºC to obtain a final temperature from 55 to 80ºC inside the beef. Results showed that electrical stimulation improved tenderness of roasted beef, which was demonstrated in the decrease in the maximum shear force from 39 to 26%. The electrical stimulation had a negative effect on cooking losses during roasting and water content in the final product. It has also been shown that studied quality attributes of beef depends on the type of heat treatment. Beef prepared in forced air circulation oven, were characterized by lower water content and higher values of maximum shear and compression forces than those heated in natural air circulation oven

Opis:
In this study, the oxidation roasting was used to modify the ilmenite chemistry to improve the collector adsorption and ilmenite flotation behavior. The results indicated that the increase of the roasting temperature up to 600 ºC increased the ilmenite flotation recovery. The maximum collector adsorption density occurred on ilmenite roasted at 600 °C which resulted in the increase of ilmenite flotation recovery from 73.5% to 91% at pH 6.3. This improvement was attributed to a greater conversion of Fe2+ to Fe3+ ions and significant decrease in the zeta potential of ilmenite. At the roasting temperatures of 750 °C and 950 °C, ilmenite was converted to rutile and some trivalent iron containing phases such as hematite and pseudobrookite. Under these conditions, the collector adsorption and hence ilmenite flotation improved, however the flotation recovery decreased after the roasting at 950 °C.

This paper investigates extraction of nickel and iron from a lateritic nickel ore from the Caldag region of Manisa in Turkey. The ore sample contains 1.2% Ni, 24.77% Fe and 0.062% Co. The process applied includes digestion with 40 wt-% sulfuric acid at 200 C for 60 min, roasting at 700 C for 15 min, leaching with water for 30 min at 1:5 solid/liquid ratio (by weight) and precipitation of the remaining iron at pH 3 and 60 C. In order to improve nickel and cobalt extractions using the digestion-roasting- leaching-precipitation process (DRLP), Na2SO4 addition in the roasting stage was examined. Under the optimum conditions and in the presence of Na2SO4, 86.2% Ni and 94.2% Co extractions were obtained with almost zero iron content. As a result, 2.07 g dm-3 Ni, 0.12 g dm-3 Co and 0.05 g dm-3 Fe could be achieved in the pregnant leach solution within nearly 2.5 hours.

Opis:
In this work extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied. A two-step extraction procedure was followed. The first step was roasting of the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures between 150 and 800oC. The second step was leaching of the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction of about 94% was achieved. In this case, the slag was roasted at 250oC with sulphuric acid higher of about 33% than that stoichiometrically required, followed by water leaching of calcine at 50oC. About 55% of iron was also dissolved under these conditions. On the other hand, for the calcine obtained at sulphation temperature of 600oC, extraction of copper in a water leaching stage was still relatively high (about 79%), whereas that of iron was comparatively low (about 6%). Dissolution of copper and iron from the calcine was found to be very fast and was complete within the first few minutes. The water temperature in the leaching step was found to have no effect on extraction of copper and iron from the calcine in the range of 30 to 85oC.

A sulfidization roasting-flotation process was usually viewed to be effective in treating the refractory oxide ore. In this paper, pyrite was proposed to be applied as a potential vulcanizing reagent to transform PbO or its surface to PbS based on feasibilities of technology and economy. The evolution process, phase and characteristics of crystal growth were investigated by TG, XRD and SEM-EDS, respectively, to interpret the interaction mechanism of lead oxide and pyrite at high temperature. It was found that the decomposition process of pyrite under argon atmosphere was a slow process of sulfur released from FeS2 to FexS, which made the process easier to be controlled. When PbO was introduced into the system, the initial solid-solid (PbO-FeS2) reaction and prevailing solid-gas (PbO-S2(g)) reaction occurred at about 500 °C and 700 °C, respectively. Combined with the SEM-EDS analyses results, the optimal temperature for the sulfidization of PbO should be in the range of 700-750 °C.

Zinc leaching residue is a good source of zinc and has a great potential to be utilized. However, it is very difficult to recover lead, zinc and silver from the residue by traditional technologies. In this study, a new technology based on conversions of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 in the residue to their respective sulfides by reduction roasting with coal powder followed by a flotation treatment was developed. The effects of roasting temperature, coal dosage, reaction time and pyrite dosage were investigated at a laboratory scale. The results showed that the conversion extent of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 under the optimal experimental conditions was 71.89 and 69.76%, respectively. A flotation concentrate containing 39.13% Zn, 6.93% Pb and 973.54 g/Mg Ag was obtained from the treated material, and the recovery of Zn, Pb and Ag was 48.38, 68.23 and 77.41%, respectively. The tailing containing ZnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 could be either stockpiled or further disposed.

In this study, a detailed characterization of the clayey waste of the Kırka boron plant was undertaken before the development of a sulfuric acid roasting-water leaching process for the extraction of lithium from this waste. The effects of roasting temperature (650-800°C) and sulfuric acid/waste ratio (90-260 kg H2SO4/1000 kg waste on a dry basis) on the extraction of lithium were investigated. By roasting the waste sample, which contained 0.37% Li2O with dolomite, smectite and borax as the main phases, at temperatures between 650°C and 800°C in the absence of sulfuric acid as the additive, CaMgSiO4 was found to form as the dominant phase after the decomposition of dolomite and smectite present in the sample. On the other hand, the X-ray diffraction analyses of the waste sample subjected to sulfuric acid treatment without roasting showed the in-situ formation of various hydrated calcium sulfate phases for all sulfuric acid/waste ratios tested. Besides, at the highest acid/waste ratio of 260, a hydrated magnesium sulfate phase was also identified in the sample. The application of the sulfuric acid roasting-water leaching process under the optimum roasting temperature of 750°C and the acid/waste ratio of 180 was found to lead to a lithium extraction of 85.7%. The applied sulfuric acid roasting-water leaching process appeared to be an attractive process with its attributes including low roasting temperature, high extraction percentage and no requirement for gypsum as the external sulfation agent.

In this study, effects of mechanical activation in the chlorination roasting and water leaching route known as CaCl2 process and developed for the production of potassium chloride (KCl) from potassium feldspar ores were studied. A microcline containing K-feldspar ore with 10.89% K2O was first intensively dry milled by a planetary ball mill and mixed with calcium chloride (CaCl2) and then roasted at temperatures up to 1000 °C to obtain KCl that will be finally dissolved by the water leaching. Potassium recovery by water leaching increased rapidly up to 800 °C. At higher temperatures, the recovery decreased fast due to the evaporation of KCl. According to the K recovery values per unit energy consumed, the optimum roasting temperature was determined as 750 °C and the milling time was 15 min. It was concluded that intensive milling causes mechanical activation of the microcline to reduce the chlorination roasting temperature, which triggers a rise in the K recovery by the water leaching.

Istotne zmiany dotyczące wszystkich parametrów barwy (L*, a*, b*) mogą wynikać z ubytku wody w prażonych jądrach orzechów. Zawartość wody podczas prażenia obniża się nawet do poziomu 0,4%.
The following study compares the parameters of roasting (100-160°C, 10-60 min) at a constant air flow rate on the basis of changes in water content and the colour development of the hazelnut kernels. The scope of this paper included drying curves preparation, moisture content determination and colour of kernel surface analysis in CIE L*, a*, b* system. Additionally, colour intensity (chroma – C) and total colour difference (ΔE) were calculated. Hazelnuts,“Kataloński’ variety cultivated in Poland were taken to the analysis. The obtained results indicated that the temperature was the main factor which affected on colour development. The significant changes occurred in all colour parameters (L*, a*, b*), what can be also correlated with the intensive water loss. The water content reduced even below 0,4%.
