- Road transport is a key factor affecting the functioning of numerous areas. Although Opolskie Province is the smallest one among Poland’s 16 provinces, it has seen over the last 15 years a twofold increase in the number of passenger cars. Importantly, the highest numbers of cars per 1,000 inhabitants are registered in Opolskie’s two counties with the fewest inhabitants. The increased number of cars travelling on roads inevitably increases the risk of traffic incidents. Thus, to be effective, road traffic safety projects cannot be confined to the boundaries of specific local government tiers. Consequently, such tasks should be implemented based on a regional road traffic safety policy.
