Opis:
The investigations covered an approximately 900-meter length of the recipient downstream from the points of drainage water discharge from a settling pond. Samples were collected seven times between June and December 2002. Temperature, pH and turbidity were measured in situ; the concentrations of suspended solids, sulfate ions, chloride ions and total dissolved substances being determined under laboratory conditions. The findings produced by the study can be itemized as follows. (1) The mine water discharge strongly impacts upon the recipient. (2) Owing to a high turbidity level, as well as to the excessive concentrations of suspended solids, chlorides and sulfates, the Potok Golawiecki has been classified as a watercourse of Class V purity. (3) The large amount of the high-salinity waters received by the Potok Golawiecki, compared to their mean low flow in the recipient, does not allow the concentrations of chlorides and sulfates to be kept within the admissible levels. (4) The discharge of drainage water is a major contributor to the hydrochemistry of the recipient stream, thus disturbing its natural regime.

Opis:
The self-purification capacity of river water is an essential indicator for a healthy river. Various organic and inorganic pollutants, both from point sources and nonpoint sources, in most streams in Banjarmasin were beyond the river self-purification capacity, which caused a decrease in the river water quality. This study attempted to identify the river water pollution distribution in the city of Banjarmasin and determined the self-purification points. We used the purposive sampling technique to carry out river water sampling, with criteria for pollutant sources and distance of pollution taken into consideration. By using the trend analysis techniques, we analyzed the parameters concentration to relate it to the range of pollution so that we were able to identify the pollution distribution and determine the self-purification distances. The results indicated that the self-purification process could take place on the river flow in of Banjarmasin even though it did not reach the clean water zone. The river in Banjarmasin requires a longer purification distance so that the self-purification process can run correctly.

The measurements of chemical components in water of Wieprza River showed that water of this river in 2002-2003 was characterised by the high purity. The average values of most indexes were contained in the ranges of standards for the first purity class. Nevertheless considerable increase of investigation parameters was observed in zone of sewage-treatment plant and uncontrolled waste dump. The part of flow downing pollutions were absorbed by peat soils. Kępice town bring into Wieprza River the load of organic matter miscalculating to BOD5 average 133 kg O2 d-1 (85 t O2 y-1), the load of nitrogen 140 kg N d-1 (51 t N y-1) and phosphorus 18 kg P d-1 (6.2 t P y-1). However Wieprza River shows high self-purification ability. The level of investigation components in this river (4 km outside of the Kępice town) returned to the level which was 2 km before the town.

Opis:
Heavy metals such as Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr and Pb in surface sediments from the Lanzhou Section of the Yellow River were investigated to analyze chemical speciation by a sequential "extraction and to evaluate their pollution level. The metal contents in the sediments were found to be in the range of (mg/kg) Cu 15.52-57.50, Fe 19 600.33-48 350.00, Mn 493.50-698.93, Ni 9.34-53.20, Zn 64.86-168.57, Cd 1.09-4.25, Cr 70.00-139.33, Pb 5.66-19.13. The arrangement of metal contents from higher to lower was: Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cd. Fe, Mn and Cu and could have the same source according to their correlations. The quantity of immobile speciation (residual) was observed to be higher when compared with mobile speciation (acid soluble, reducible, and oxidizable) of Fe, Cu, Cd and Cr. The highly enrichment factors of Ni and Cr created a high environmental risk. The order of contamination level for heavy metals in sediment was Cr > Cd > Pb > Cu > Mn > Ni > Fe > Zn on the basis of performance of the geoaccumulation index, enrichment factor and pollution load index.

Opis:
Zaprezentowano metodę analitycznego rozwiązywania równania różniczkowego opisującego adwekcyjny transport masy z dwukierunkową dyfuzją w płaszczyźnie normalnej do przepływu w stanach nieustalonych.
The paper presents an analytical solution of the differential equation that describes advection mass transport with bi-directional diffusion in the plane perpendicular to flow under conditions of unsteady state. The solution obtained makes it possible to define the distribution of pollutant concentrations in the river cross-section and determine the coefficient of variation in the concentrations of the pollutants. Knowledge of the coefficient of variation offers the possibility for determining (up to the extent desired) the time during which the pollutants and riverine water become intermixed. To visualize the method proposed, an example was presented of time-related evolution of the pollutant concentration map, and a method was suggested, which shows how to produce such maps in the case of several pollution sources.

Opis:
In summer 2022, the catchment area of the Odra River was affected by an ecological catastrophe the scope of which had been unprecedented. In the river, where water was contaminated along hundreds of kilometres, fish and other organisms, such as clams and freshwater snails, died in large numbers. At least 350 tonnes of poisoned fish were recovered from the Odra River and its tributaries. The results of the analyses conducted by researchers from the Institute of Marine and Environmental Sciences of the University of Szczecin and experts from non-governmental organisations, which were published at the end of 2023, showed beyond doubt that over 3 million fish died (1,650 tonnes, i.e. 60 percent of their biomass), as well as almost 90 percent of organisms involved in the river’s self-purification processes. Taking into account the scale of the catastrophe and its consequences, it was justified to evaluate the activities of the government administration bodies and state legal persons responsible for reacting on the situation, especially in the light of publicly voiced accusations of their idleness, especially during the first phase of the crisis. It was also important to present the conditions stemming from the actions taken, or negligence that led to idleness. The NIK’s audit focused on two areas: preparedness of the state structures and the circumstances that led to the ecological crisis in the Odra River, as well as the way state bodies reacted on the situation. The article presents the findings of this audit.

The Cisadane River, Tangerang City, is one of the most important rivers in Indonesia. This river provides raw water for Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) of the Tangerang City and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, but the water quality tends to deteriorate due to pollution. The government has made various efforts to manage the river water quality, but no significant resolution was issued yet. The problem is becoming more complicated due to land-use changes that affect the pollutant load. Therefore, more precise, integrated, and comprehensive management is needed. This study used an approach with various methodologies according to the stages of the research, including; qualitative and quantitative analysis, GIS, statistics, risk management, and System Dynamic. The outcome of this research was the development of the policies in river water quality management, specifically land use manage-ment, separation of drainage channels from domestic sewage channels, enhancement of Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) services coverage, as well as reinforcement of institutional and regulatory aspects, especially in funding commitments.

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate water quality of the Supraśl river and identify its main pollution sources. On the river and its tributaries, 8 control points were selected, located near Krynica, Gródek, Nowosiółki, Zasady (mouth of the tributary Sokołda), Supraśl, Nowodworce, Dobrzyniewo (mouth of the tributary Biała) and Dzikie. The control points were selected in such a way as to take into account the impact of major point sources of analyzed components located along the river and its main tributaries on water quality in the main stream catchment. Water samples were collected once a month during the period from May to November in 2014. In water samples the concentration of dissolved oxygen, Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+, P-PO43- and the values of pH, BOD5 and electrolytic conductivity were indicated. Based on the obtained results, loads of the individual components in river waters were calculated as a product of concentration and Supraśl waters flow rate in a particular month. Supraśl waters, due to values of most analyzed parameters, should be classified as first quality class. The source of Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+ in Supraśl waters were treated wastewater and other anthropogenic sources associated with the basin development. Reduced Supraśl water quality is caused by the inflow of organic substances expressed by BZT5 from natural and anthropogenic origin and concentration of PO43-, which were mainly delivered with treated wastewater.

Opis:
The main river of the Kosovo valley is the Sitnica River, which collects a large number of streams, recipients of wastewaterfrom various urban and industrial centers. The blockage of Sitnica river with waste and non-regulation of the bedding of this river makes this river flood tens of acres of worked ground surface through its course, causing great damage every spring and autumn. Uncontrolled discharge of heavy metals into the contaminated terrestrial environments ensures their transfer to plants, animals and humans and results in an impact on the environment and public health. Determination of the heavy metals concentration level for the assessment of soil pollution along the Sitnica River course was also the main purpose of this study, which was carried out in 2016. For analysis, 8 soil samples were taken at depths of 30–50 cm. From the analysis of the data it was noticed that the content of heavy metals such as Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr in some analyzed samples exceeds the maximum allowed values. The findings indicate high values of metal pollution in the samples taken in meadows as well as the agricultural lands stretching around the river.

Opis:
Nowadays, human activity has been playing an increasing role in determining the quality of surface waters. The aim of the following article is to show an influence of anthropogenic factors influencing the variability of chemical composition of river waters in a catchment area with an agricultural use of lands. The authors carried out the analysis of surface waters quality, made an inventory of pollution sources of surface waters and presented the proposal of quality improvement of surface waters in the Miechów and Kazimierz districts. Research on the concentration of biogenic compounds was conducted in the Nidzica catchment area. Data for research was obtained from the Voivodship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection, County Offices and Commune Offices. The tested area was an agricultural one. The major pollutants of the waters of catchment areas include both area and point pollution. Fertilizers and natural fertilizers are used to raise the yield and then they get into the surface waters by flushing from the fields. The main goal is to investigate the dynamics of changes in the content of nutrient compounds in surface waters during the year (seasonal changes) and in the multiannual period (multiannual changes).

The Timok River (202 km long, 4547 km2 basin area) is located in East Serbia. It is a right tributary of the Danube River and one of the most polluted watercourses in Serbia. On the basis of the data provided by the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, the paper presents an analysis of water quality and pollution using the combined physico-chemical WPI index (Water Pollution Index) calculated for two periods - 1993-96 and 2006-2009 at four hydrological stations: Zaječar-Gamzigrad (Crni Timok River), Zaječar (Beli Timok River), Rgotina (Borska Reka River) and Čokonjar (Timok River). The following parameters were taken into consideration: dissolved O2, O2 saturation, pH, suspended sediments, Five Day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (CODMn), nitrites, nitrates, orthophosphates, ammonium, metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Hg, Ni, Zn, Cd), sulphates and coliform germs. The average WPI values were calculated for the observed periods based on the comparison of the annual average values of the listed parameters and defined standard values for the I water quality class (according to the Regulation on the Hygienic Acceptability of Potable Water of the Republic of Serbia). The highest pollution degree was recorded in the Borska Reka River, where heavy metal levels (especially manganese and iron) were significantly increased. These metals are indicators of inorganic pollution (primarily caused by copper mining). Also, increased values of the organic pollution indicators (ammonium, coliform germs, Five-Day Biological Oxygen Demand - BOD5) in the Borska Reka and the Timok rivers are the result of uncontrolled domestic wastewater discharge.
