    Opis:
    The understanding of the function of symbols both in traditional and post-modern societies is one of the main tasks of contemporary anthropology. It is particularly apparent in the theoretical reflection of Victor Turner, a scholar who together with Clifford Geertz is thought to be the leading representative of symbolical anthropology. The explanation and interpretation of the symbols of religious rituals must in the very beginning emphasize the theoretically meaningful difference between a symbol and a sign. The processual-temporal analysis of symbol assumes that it is a living and active bearer of central values, such that dominate in a culture under investigation.

    Opis:
    The soteriological paradigm of Vajrayāna: The purpose of the paper is to determine the distinctive soteriological paradigm of Tantric Buddhism. The view of Shinichi Tsuda is critically analyzed. The belief that symbols of Buddhahood are essential to achieve Buddhahood appears specific for Vajrayāna. Relevant manipulation of the symbols can be ritual or/and imaginary. Followers are convinced that the manipulation enables them to achieve the final religious goal, not only the intermediate steps. They also believe they can activate and control the processes that are not dependent on enlightened beings’ good will. However, such a position need not exclude the appreciation of moral and cognitive virtues. Some aspects and variants of the Vajrayāna soteriological paradigm are discussed to avoid any misinterpretation.

    The death of a loved one results in manifestations of suffering, mourning, and finally post-mortem and funeral ceremonies. The departure of people who were key figures and influenced the political space brings with it a whole spectrum of symbols, signs and rituals of mourning in this space. In the history of the Third Polish Republic, Poles experienced a number of sad moments related to the deaths of less and more significant figures in the world of politics. The departure of John Paul II, all those who died in the Smolensk catastrophe, the assassination of President Paweł Adamowicz, the deaths of the founding fathers of the Third Republic: Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Jacek Kuroń, Władysław Bartoszewski, Andrzej Chodubski, who was so close to the University of Gdańsk environment, and many others, are just some of the great world of politics and political science. The symbols of suffering and rituals of mourning that accompanied their farewells were, among other things, an expression of our culture, also political.
    Śmierć kogoś bliskiego skutkuje przejawami cierpienia, żałości, wreszcie ceremoniami pośmiertnymi i pogrzebowymi. Odejście osób, które były kluczowymi postaciami i wywierały wpływ na przestrzeń polityczną niesie za sobą, w tejże przestrzeni, całe spektrum symboli, oznak i rytuałów żałoby. W dziejach III Rzeczypospolitej Polacy doznali szeregu smutnych momentów związanych ze śmiercią mniej i bardziej znaczących w świecie polityki postaci. Odejście Jana Pawła II, wszystkich, którzy zginęli w katastrofie smoleńskiej, zabójstwo prezydenta Pawła Adamowicza, śmierć ojców założycieli III Rzeczypospolitej: Tadeusza Mazowieckiego i Jacka Kuronia, Władysława Bartoszewskiego, zgon jakże bliskiego środowisku Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego Andrzeja Chodubskiego i wielu innych, to zaledwie część ze znakomitych postaci świata polityki i nauk o polityce. Symbole cierpienia i rytuały żałoby, jakie towarzyszyły ich pożegnaniom, były między innymi wyrazem naszej kultury, także politycznej.

    The entity of the aesthetical representation of politics is studied basing on three ontological sources and three methodological views on this process: aesthetical, ethical, and psychological. The essence of the aesthetical presentation of the political sphere and the ways of representing political reality by aesthetical facilities are analyzed. The special concepts of a political symbol, the political metaphor, the political ritual, and the political myth are used in the research to discover the sensual parameters of the political aesthetization as the process and collection of the phenomena.

    Opis:
    Among various anthropological questions religion surely takes the central position. The author of the article tries to show C. Geertz’s conception of religion as the background of evolutionist and functional debates about it. He departs from perceiving religion in the categories of a social fact towards treating it as a system of symbols. The model suggests a certain closed circulation of connected elements: ethos and worldview, mutually confirming each other. Worldview is an element of the natural structure of the world. This suggests that it is the only possible and natural way of acting and perceiving the world, consolidated by religious and emotional experience that is an element of the ritual. In the situation of social change religious symbols seem to lose their influence, turning into various forms of ideology – a phenomenon Geertz called “ideologization of religion”. This is done owing to the victory of “commonsensical cognition” over religious cognition. By the very fact the religious lifestyle – “religiousness” – is transformed into “religious-mindedness”. The struggle between them is the “struggle for reality”.
