The concept of the society of consumption says that in this type of society everything is “for sale” if there is a consumer for this. That means that one can sell not only products and services but people, ideas and values as well. On the other hand, people face many global risks. Confronted by risks, they have become equal regardless of their origins, education or financial status. Anxiety about future and awareness of fragility of a human life causes people to be more likely to indulge themselves with different pleasures. They want to “have fun before they die”. The media, advertisements and medicine offer a variety of products and services that are to make one`s life better and to bring more pleasure and happiness to them. Contemporary hedonism is, after all, different in the sense that it does not avoid pain and suffering. People are willing to suffer in the name of the future pleasure. Will this race to satisfy whims and desires end someday? Will the fast defeat the carnival? Is there a place for reflection and altruism? These are some questions that this paper examines.

Youth as Partners in the Social Dialogue. Corporate Social Responsibility in Risk SocietyTh e notion of CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility – has evolved in last years fromphilanthropy to strategic risk management.Contemporarily, the idea of CSR refers to Sustainable Development and creates toolsfor coping with new types of social risks. Th e institutionalized process of social dialoguesis such a tool useful not only in administration, but also in business sector.However, it still needs contribution by theoretical refl ection in the form of normativetheory and critical theory as well. Th e aim of this paper is to present the mechanismof CSR and the mechanism of conforming the company to change in its social environment.I use inspiration from the risk society theory, theory of refl exive modernisationand, on the other hand, system-theory by Niklas Luhmann, to analyse themeaning and potential of modern CSR. Th en, analysing chosen case studies of CSRactivity in Poland, I will attempt to answer the question about the role of youth as thestakeholders in the process of social dialogue.

The study analyses the dynamics of public debate surrounding the issue of maidan [stray] dog population control strategies in Moldavia and Romania. The comparison takes as its point of reference two episodes of moral panic and discusses the applicability of the theoretical models of moral panic, risk and hazard society. Following the work of Bruno Latour, Mary Douglas, Phil Macnaghten and John Urry, the study distinguishes between the conceptualization of strays dogs (as hybrids) in terms of nature, and their conceptualization in terms of culture. It argues that the stabilization in terms of nature is more suitable to be addressed by the theoretical models of risk and hazard society, whilst the stabilization in terms of culture pertains to the theoretical model of moral panic instead.

Where abrupt and dangerous natural phenomena unfold in highly populated areas, they destroy buildings and infrastructure and, above all, cause death and injury among local inhabitants. In the case of the active Ecuadorean volcano Cotopaxi, eruptions have already posed considerable threats to nearby towns and cities due to activated mudslides (lahars) that flow rapidly down its slopes. Interviews conducted with inhabitants of vulnerable residential areas of the town of Latacunga have led the authors to conclude that – in danger zones associated with possible mudslides – the lack of building land, inappropriate management of the allocation of building plots and still-inadequate early warning and monitoring systems have favoured the chaotic spread of built-up areas and thus pose a threat to the lives of inhabitants should Cotopaxi erupt again.

The necessity of dealing with risk undoubtedly accompanies society at every stage of its development and so it does today. The worldwide risk society is a proper denotation of today’s reality according to German sociologist U. Beck. The category describes the world of global threats, which source is civilization itself as well as scientific and technological progress. It is also a period in which the social consciousness of risk is fundamentally crystallized and in which the rigid distinction between the calculated (objective) risk and its (subjective) awareness is all the more blurred. One of the challenges of this reality is the issue of environmental change (ecological risk). The modern debate surrounding potential global warming, the importance attributed to the ecological security aspect and the number of actors involved in this issue, forces to reflect that climate change is not just a purely natural issue (just look at possible political, economic, and social costs of global warming).
Konieczność radzenia sobie z ryzykiem jest niewątpliwie kwestią towarzyszącą społeczeństwu na każdym etapie jego rozwoju, nie inaczej jest współcześnie. Społeczeństwo (światowego) ryzyka, bo tak dzisiejszą rzeczywistość określa niemiecki socjolog U. Beck, jest kategorią opisującą świat globalnych zagrożeń, których źródłem jest sama cywilizacja i postęp naukowo-technologiczny. Jest to także okres, w którym w sposób zasadniczy krystalizuje się społeczna świadomość ryzyka, w ramach której bardziej niż kiedykolwiek zatarciu ulega sztywne rozróżnienie między obliczalnym (obiektywnym) ryzykiem a jego (subiektywną) świadomością. Jednym z wyzwań tej rzeczywistości jest kwestia zmian środowiska naturalnego (ryzyko ekologiczne). Tocząca się współcześnie debata wokół potencjalnego ocieplenia klimatu, znaczenie, jakie przypisuje się aspektowi bezpieczeństwa ekologicznego oraz liczba aktorów zaangażowanych w ten problem wymuszają refleksję, iż zmiana klimatyczna to nie tylko problem czysto przyrodniczy (wystarczy spojrzeć na ewentualne polityczne, ekonomiczne i społeczne koszty globalnego ocieplenia).

The article presents an analysis of the news broadcast on Czech public television during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Based on the concept of post-politics, the analysis illustrates how Czech Television created consensus, naturalized the measures adopted by the government, and transformed a potentially political space into one that privileged instrumental and technical solutions. The author argues that the later emergence of protest movements in Czechia may also be related to the first wave of the pandemic being presented in a consensual, post-political form in public service media. This activity prevented society from recognizing the socially unequal impact of the pandemic and the measures aimed at reducing its impact. Dealing with the question of how to represent a world that went through a rapid change, because of a pandemic, the article ends with a plea for agonistic media pluralism.

The presented study focuses on the role of applied ethics(cist) in managing the quality of life in the post-risk society. Given that, from an ethical point of view, it is appropriate to reflect the quality of life also through other than quantitative, i.e. objective and therefore also measurable indicator, it is important to be also focused on the action of a person that leads to increasing his/her satisfaction, the feeling of happiness as a subjective indicator. The ecological crisis is a concern for all Christian churches. The author discusses common climate topics that are present in the statements of religious leaders: human responsibility for environmental degradation, a call to oppose the culture of greed, building ecological justice. The author presents the social effects of the climate crisis - social inequalities and poverty and discusses new forms of ecumenism practised in a risk society. The new ecumenism is not an intellectual movement or theological discussions, but a joint work of the Churches for the poor.
Kryzys ekologiczny jest przedmiotem troski wszystkich Kościołów chrześcijańskich. Autor omawia wspólne wątki dotyczące klimatu, jakie obecne są w wypowiedziach przywódców religijnych: odpowiedzialność człowieka za degradację środowiska, wezwanie do przeciwstawienia się kulturze chciwości, budowanie sprawiedliwości ekologicznej. Autor przedstawia społeczne skutki kryzysu klimatycznego – nierówności społeczne i ubóstwo oraz omawia nowe formy ekumenizmu praktykowane w społeczeństwie ryzyka. Nowy ekumenizm to nie ruch intelektualny czy dyskusje teologiczne, ale przede wszystkim wspólna praca Kościołów na rzecz ubogich.

The main intention of this text is to show the interpretative track in the attempt to find the genealogy of expert appraisal. The main thesis expresses Zygmunt Bauman’s view of mutual connection between the weak and light status of identity in consumer culture and the tendency to create cultural practices in order to overcome that weakness, and to strengthen and confirm that status of identity. On the one hand, the main feature of consumer culture and our freedom expressed by consumption determines our identities and is the main reason for „corrosion of identity” (R. Sennett), but on the other hand it demands and generates the necessity of cultural institutions that guarantee its confirmation. Hence, we may find the reason for the so-called „counselling boom” and expansion of expert appraisal in our risk society. The presented text also shows the cultural background for cultural practices in the risk society and consists of the attempt to grasp social instant pedagogies. This phenomenon is analysed here by the role of advertisements and psychological guides as the main cultural practices of instant pedagogy. My intention seeks to bring to account often hidden and obvious practices, and to highlight in a critical manner the tendencies in our social milieu and in the face of „the unbearable lightness of consumption”.

Der vorliegende Beitrag präsentiert am Beispiel der Romane von M. Streeruwitz und Th. von Steinaecker die zeitgenössischen Strategien der Inszenierung von globalen Gefahren in der s. g. Weltrisikogesellschaft (U. Beck). Die beiden Texte können als tiefgründige Diagnose des privaten und öffentlichen Alarmismus interpretiert werden. Die permanente Erwartung einer Bedrohung und das ausgeprägte Präventivdenken schränken die individuelle und öffentliche Freiheit ein, rufen Verunsicherung hervor und spannen die Individuen in ökonomische Machtverhältnisse der Versicherungskorporationen und Sicherheitsfirmen ein.
The article discusses contemporary strategies of presenting the global threat in so called global risk society (Ulrich Beck), basing on the novels of Marlene Streeruwitz and Thomas von Steinaecker. Both works may well be interpreted as a thorough diagnosis of both private and social alarmism. Continuous anticipation of threats and a permanent wish to insure against all possible risks limit individual and public freedom, trigger a notion of instability and make citizens become the hostages of insuarance agencies and security companies.
Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje na podstawie powieści Marlene Streeruwitz i Thomasa von Steinaeckera współczesne strategie inscenizowania globalnego zagrożenia w tzw. społeczeństwie światowego ryzyka (Ulrich Beck). Oba utwory zinterpretować można jako przenikliwą diagnozę jednostkowego i społecznego alarmizmu. Permanentne oczekiwanie na zagrożenia i chęć ubezpieczania się od wszelkiego ryzyka ogranicza wolność indywidualną i zbiorową, wywołuje poczucie niestabilności i czyni z obywateli zakładników koncernów ubezpieczeniowych i firm ochroniarskich.

Co spowodowało, że komunikacja międzyludzka w związku z pojawieniem się pandemii na skalę globalną, począwszy od jesieni 2019 r., uległa tak głębokiej zmianie? Ujawniła się wówczas z całą siłą – i pozostaje niezmiennie przez cały czas trwania pandemii – znacząca rola mediów w kształtowaniu percepcji świata, jak i najbliższego otoczenia, kreowania/redukowania poczucia zagrożenia obywateli. Wysoka pozycja mediów w czasie dotykającej nas jako obywateli pandemii odnosi się – przede wszystkim – do mediów elektronicznych związanych z Internetem. Sytuacja ta stanowi swoisty test/próbę dla oceny efektywności całościowo pojmowanego systemu mediów (zarówno tych o zasięgu globalnym, jak i tych kontynentalnych, krajowych czy lokalnych) odnośnie do jego sprawności informacyjno-edukacyjnej i umiejętności perswazyjnych mających na celu bezpieczne przeprowadzenie informacyjne społeczeństw przez falę epidemii.
What caused interpersonal communication in connection with the appearance of the pandemic on the global website, in the fall of 2019. has changed so profoundly? It then revealed itself in full force and remains unchanged throughout the duration of the pandemic, the significant role of the media in shaping the perception of the world and the immediate environment, creating/reducing the sense of threat to citizens.And this high position of the media during the pandemic affecting us as citizens concerns ul. Prof. S. Łojasiewicza 4—above all—electronic media related to the Internet. This situation is a specific test/trial to assess the effectiveness of the overall media system (both global and continental, national or local) in terms of its informational and educational efficiency and persuasive skills aimed at safe informing societies through the epidemic wave.

In this paper we are going to proceed in two levels: on the one hand we will explain the OPSEC principles, steps and conceptual aspects through the main sources of this field; on the other hand we will discuss applications of the model in real world (military, politics, industry, etc.) via some explanatory examples and its potential usages for securing modern life and societies. Our approach will be based on an interdisciplinary view with references to sociology, security studies and management.
