Authors try to point out the risks of the Roma community, based on the specifics of their culture, thought, and values of a lifestyle with that they alive. They are delivering characteristics of segregated Roma settlements, reflect on the state of health of the Roma community, which is related to their social problems. Authors are discussing in detail numbers of risk factors that affect the health of the Roma community. Based on these characteristics authors point to the fact that the Roma ethnic group is a way of lifestyle for the group with a high incidence of risk of many diseases. Finally, they reflect on options and proposals for solution of the Roma population proposition.

Introduction. Paget’s disease (PDB) is a focal disorder of bone remodeling that occurs commonly in older people with decreasing prevalence reported in European countries. This disease is most often asymptomatic, but it can cause a variety of medical complications resulting in considerable morbidity and reduced quality of life. There is little information regarding the epidemiology of PDB in Poland. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first large epidemiological analysis of this disease in Poland. Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze factors that may be related to the PDB epidemiology among hospitalized patients in Poland. Materials and method. The analysis was conducted on the basis of population-based administrative data, taken from a Polish hospital morbidity study carried out by the National Institute of Public Health between January 2008 – December 2014. Results. Analyzed data covered 662 hospitalization records. The final study sample comprised 94 (41.8%) male and 131 (58.2%) female patients with first-time hospitalizations for PDB, with a significant predominance of females (P<0.02), and the predominance of patients living in urban (73%) than in rural areas (27%), P<0.001. The average age of the sample was 56.8 years (CI: 54.3–59.3; SD 18.8; range 1–93 years). The number of PDB cases hospitalized in Poland significantly decreased during the analyzed period of time. Conclusions: PDB is a rare disease with decreasing trends observed among hospitalized patients in Poland. The study results may suggest the existence of environmental risk factors for the development of PDB.

Besides clinical medicine, which is in the process of constant and fast development, the focus is increasingly on public health services, which should be well prepared for reducing or keeping under control the dangers induced by the growing social burden of disease. Continuous risk management is represented by these services that are specially designed to prevent diseases and health damages. The grounds for the planning and implementation of public health services are constituted by risk factor management and assessment by means of adopting a unified approach. The organisation as well as the cost-effective implementation of services – providing primary, secondary and tertiary prevention – on community and individual levels will be of utmost importance in the future, and will mean, besides risk equalisation, adopting a unified approach as to the provision of public health services.

Opis:
This article explores the lay constructions of genetic risk, the right not to know and the obligation to do a genetic test, know the risk and share genetic information with others. The study was carried out on 27 members of the Polish Society of Huntington’s Disease. I describe their understanding of bioethics and their arguments for and against the right not to know. I argue that lay perceptions of the risk, rights and obligations mentioned above are shaped not only by the type of genetic disease involved but also depend on the social group to which it poses a threat and/or costs. Consequently, such obligations are framed toward: future generations, family members, society, the State and oneself. I also argue that genetics is turning families into bioethicists who, as lay experts, become one of the key players in the biomedicalization of society and bioethicization of genetic discourse.

The review provides a comprehensive summary of existing literature focusing on the most serious risk factors of non-communicable diseases and collects current knowledge on their distribution, determinants, clusters, psychological and socio-economic consequences. Especially, the life-course approach is stressed, early life consequences of the later onset of chronic diseases, the risk behavior and its social, socio-economic and psychosocial determination is reviewed. Potential of preventing these harmful consequences has a lifelong approach. The aim is to demonstrate the opportunity for future health system transformation in terms of public health prevention regarding the non-communicable diseases. It is concluded that personalized lifestyle medicine should address a patient’s health by empowering them with the information they need to regain control of their health. Preventive methods should be tailored for each patient, considering such patient’s specific genes, environment, lifestyle, early life factors and social patterns of risk factors to avoid burden of health in later age. Intervention and preventive measures should target not only to individual factors but should reflect wider social, psychosocial and socio-economic consequences. It is also crucial from the point of view of public health to consider data on exposome, which are not included in epidemiological studies as well as its impact on health in the context of non-communicable diseases. Głównym rezultatem pracy jest model informatycznego modułu wspomagania decyzji w zakresie ustalania wstępnej diagnozy medycznej. Moduł ten na podstawie danych medycznych, symptomów chorobowych oraz czynników ryzyka pozwala generować zbiór jednostek chorobowych, od których nie ma bardziej prawdopodobnych (zbiór Pareto). Dodatkowo umożliwia dokonanie rankingu jednostek chorobowych ze względu na odległość od tzw. punktu idealnego w przestrzeni chorób uwzględnionych w repozytorium.
The main result of the work is a model of an information module for decision support in determining the initial medical diagnosis. This module is based on medical data, symptoms of disease and risk factors that generale a set of diseases from which there is no morę probable (Pareto set). In addition, allows a ranking of diseases due to the distance from the so-called ideał point in the space of diseases included in the repository.

Wstęp Choroby układu krążenia (ChUK), zaliczane do chorób związanych z pracą, są przyczyną 25% niezdolności do pracy i 50% wszystkich zgonów w Polsce, w tym 26,9% zgonów osób przed 65. rokiem życia. Założeniem pracy była analiza oczekiwań pracowników wybranego przedsiębiorstwa odnośnie do działań profilaktycznych ukierunkowanych na ChUK w zależności od płci. Materiał i metody Na potrzeby badania przygotowano ankietę obejmującą dane socjodemograficzne, charakterystykę pracy, czynniki środowiska pracy i pytania dotyczące oczekiwań respondentów odnośnie do planowanego programu profilaktycznego. Grupę badaną stanowiło losowo dobranych 407 pracowników wieloprofilowego przedsiębiorstwa. Średnia wieku badanych wynosiła 46,7 roku (odchylenie standardowe (standard deviation – SD) = 9,1) – 330 mężczyzn (81,1%) o średniej wieku = 46,9 roku (SD = 9,2) i 77 kobiet (18,9%) o średniej wieku = 45,9 roku (SD = 8,2). Badania przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem ankiety audytoryjnej. Wyniki Potrzebę działań w zakresie aktywności fizycznej (korzystanie z siłowni, basenu, sali gimnastycznej, kortu tenisowego) zgłosiło 56,5% badanych, a w zakresie walki z nałogiem palenia (sesje edukacyjne dotyczące zaprzestania palenia) – 24,6%. Niewielki odsetek osób był zainteresowany działaniami dotyczącymi zdrowego żywienia. Według większości badanych zakres badań profilaktycznych powinien być rozszerzony. Na podstawie niniejszych badań i danych z piśmiennictwa przygotowano program profilaktyczny przeznaczony dla przedsiębiorstwa, w którym przeprowadzono badania. Program i wyniki jego ewaluacji będą przedstawione w kolejnej publikacji. Wnioski Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników wykazano istotne ilościowe i jakościowe różnice dotyczące pozazawodowych i zawodowych czynników ryzyka ChUK między grupą kobiet a mężczyzn oraz preferencji dotyczących udziału w programach profilaktycznych. Wyniki wskazują, że przy planowaniu programów profilaktycznych należy uwzględniać różnice wynikające z płci. Med. Pr. 2017;68(6):757–769
Background In Poland cardiovascular diseases (CVD), classified as work-related diseases, are responsible for 25% of disability and cause 50% of all deaths, including 26.9% of deaths in people aged under 65 years. The aim of the study was to analyze employee expectations regarding CVD- oriented prophylactic activities in the selected enterprise. Material and Methods A questionnaire, developed for this study, consists of: socio-demographic data, job characteristics, occupational factors, and questions about the respondents’ expectations concerning the prevention program. The study group comprised 407 multi-profile company employees aged (mean) 46.7 years (standard deviation (SD) = 9.1), including 330 men (81.1%), mean age = 46.9 (SD = 9.2) and 77 women (18.9%), mean age = 45.9 (SD = 8.2) The study was performed using the method of auditorium survey. Results Employees declared the need for actions related to physical activity: use of gym, swimming pool, tennis (56.5%), smoking habits – education sessions on quitting smoking (24.6%). A few people were interested in activities related to healthy diet. According to the majority of the study group, the scope of preventive examinations should be expanded. Based on our own findings and literature data CVD- -oriented preventive program, addressed to the analyzed enterprise was prepared. The program will be presented in another paper. Conclusions The results showed significant quantitative and qualitative differences in the classic and occupational CVD risk factors between men and women, as well as in preferences for participation in prevention programs. Purpose: The coronavirus pandemic has suddenly changed the lives of people all over the world, both in terms of their health, everyday habits, work, and the patterns of their consumer behavior. The goal of our study was first to examine the intensity of stockpiling in Poland that appeared in response to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and explore the role of psychological factors (sense of control over the pandemic and subjective perception of the risk of getting infected with the coronavirus) for different dimensions of stockpiling. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted in April 2020 on a nationwide representative random-quota sample (n=1,046) shortly after the first COVID-19 infection was diagnosed in Poland. At the time, certain changes in shopping behavior, especially increased purchase frequencies and stockpiling intensity, were observed in Poland, similarly to many other countries. Findings: The results showed that the factors affecting consumer behavior, such as making supplies or spending more on pandemic-related and unrelated items, are explained not only by demographic variables but also by psychological factors such as the experience of a lack of control and fear of being infected with the coronavirus. Research limitations/implications: The study has managerial implications regarding sales and logistics management. In an emergency situation (not only directly related to the economic crisis and consumption), both producers of basic products and retailers should be prepared for increased interest in the purchase of these products and provide access to consumers accordingly. Controlling communications in public spaces that could generate anxiety would be advisable too. Originality/value: The conducted study shows that the shopping behavior during the onset of the COVID‑19 pandemic was predicted by fear of the coronavirus and feelings of a lack of control.
Cel: pandemia COVID-19 gwałtownie zmieniła życie ludzi na całym świecie w zakresie zarówno zdrowia, codziennych nawyków, pracy, jak i zachowań konsumenckich. Celem badania było zmierzenie intensywności gromadzenia zapasów w Polsce jako odpowiedzi na pojawienie się pandemii COVID-19 oraz zbadanie roli czynników psychologicznych (poczucie kontroli i subiektywne postrzeganie ryzyka zakażenia koronawirusem) dla gromadzenia różnych rodzajów produktów. Metodologia: badanie przeprowadzono w kwietniu 2020 roku na ogólnopolskiej reprezentatywnej próbie losowo-kwotowej (n=1046) krótko po wykryciu pierwszego zakażenia COVID-19 w Polsce. W tym czasie w Polsce, podobnie jak w wielu innych krajach, zaobserwowano pewne zmiany w zachowaniach zakupowych, zwłaszcza zwiększoną częstotliwość zakupów i intensywność gromadzenia zapasów. Wyniki: wyniki pokazały, że czynniki wpływające na zachowania konsumentów, takie jak robienie zapasów czy większe wydatki na zakupy związane i niezwiązane z pandemią, są wyjaśniane nie tylko przez zmienne demograficzne, lecz także przez czynniki psychologiczne, takie jak doświadczenie braku kontroli i strach przed zakażeniem koronawirusem. Ograniczenia/implikacje badawcze: badanie ma implikacje dotyczące zarządzania sprzedażą i logistyką. W sytuacji kryzysowej (nie tylko bezpośrednio związanej z kryzysem gospodarczym i konsumpcją) zarówno producenci podstawowych produktów, jak i ich sprzedawcy powinni być przygotowani na zwiększone zainteresowanie zakupem tych produktów i odpowiednio zapewnić ich dostęp konsumentom. Wskazane byłoby również kontrolowanie komunikatów w przestrzeni publicznej, które mogłyby wywołać niepokój.

W pracy przedstawiono narzędzie symulacyjne zaprojektowane w celu badania wybranych charakterystyk jakościowych diagnoz medycznych generowanych przez komputerowy system wspomagania decyzji medycznych. System ten wykorzystuje metodę wnioskowania diagnostycznego bazującą na określaniu podobieństwa stanu zdrowia pacjenta do wzorców jednostek chorobowych zawartych w repozytorium. Program umożliwia symulacyjne badanie charakterystyk jakościowych procesu diagnozowania, a szczególnie tzw. wiarygodności diagnostycznej wygenerowanych diagnoz medycznych przy różnych scenariuszach badawczych. Program komputerowy powstał w oparciu o platformę .NET Framework oraz biblioteki uzupełniające.
The article presents a simulation tool designed to examine selected qualitative characteristics of medical diagnoses, generated by the computer system supporting medical decisions. The system uses diagnostic conclusion method based on defining a similarity between the patient's condition and diseases' patterns contained in repository. The presented application allows a simulative examination of qualitative indexes of the diagnostic process, particularly: a reliability index of generated medical diagnosis with different test scenarios. The computer program was built using .NET Framework technology and supplement libraries.
