Opis:
Informal sources of credit prevail in the rural areas of developing countries mostly cater farm households.  Hence, this study was conducted to analyze the determinants of rural credit access decision among small-scale rice farmers in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines using binary logistic regression. A total of 74 randomly selected farm household heads, who have direct supervision in rice farming activities, participated in the study. The results of the binary logistic regression indicated that gender, age and education were the significant determinants of rural credit decision. This research recommends other factors, working sectors and settings for future research.

Opis:
This study focuses on determinants of the agricultural loan decision-making process of rice (Oryza sativa) farmers in Abuja, Nigeria, using the Heckman two-stage model and factor analysis. This study was designed specifically to achieve the following objectives: determine the socio-economic profiles or characteristics of rice farmers, analyze the costs and returns of rice production, evaluate factors influencing rice farmers’ decision to obtain an agricultural loan, evaluate socio-economic factors influencing the amount of the agricultural loan, and determine the constraints or problems facing rice farmers. A multi-stage sampling design was employed. A total sample of one hundred (100) rice farmers was included, and primary data were utilized. Data were obtained through the use of a well-structured and well-designed questionnaire. Statistical and econometric tools used in analyzing data included descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, financial analysis, the Heckman two-stage model, and principal component analysis. The results show that 63% of rice farmers were between the age of 31–50 years. The mean age was 41.90 years. About 65% of rice farmers were male, and 54% of them were married. Also, 93% of rice farmers had formal education and were literate. The household sizes were large, with an average of six persons per household. An average of 71,550 nairas was the loan amount granted to rice farmers by financial institutions. The average farm size amounted to 1.49 hectares. Factors influencing the decision of rice farmers to obtain agricultural loan included age (P < 0.01), marital status (P < 0.05), household size (P < 0.10), educational level (P < 0.05), farm size (P < 0.05), farm and non-farm income (P < 0.10), farm experience (P < 0.05), collateral property (P < 0.05), extension services (P < 0.10), and awareness of loan or credit facilities (P < 0.05). Rice production was profitable with a net farm income of 744,300 nairas. The gross margin ratio of 0.95 means that 95 kobos covered profits, taxes, expenses, interest, and depreciation for every naira invested in rice production activities. Socio-economic factors statistically and significantly influencing the amount of agricultural loan obtained by rice farmers included (P < 0.05) sex (P < 0.01), household size (P < 0.05) and educational level (P < 0.01). The constraints facing rice farmers in obtaining the agricultural loan and production activities included lack of collateral property, lack of fertilizer input, poor-quality feeder roads, lack of credit facilities, inadequate labor input, and complicated and costly administrative procedures to obtain a loan. It is recommended that agricultural loans be made available to rice farmers in sufficient amounts and at low-interest rates. Also, farm inputs, fertilizer inputs, improved seeds, and chemicals should be made available to rice farmers.

Opis:
Dermatophytosis caused by dermatophytic fungi is highly contagious and represents significant public health problem in Nigeria and the world at large. The infection among rice farmers had not received much attention; hence, the epidemiology of dermatophytosis among rice farmers in Ebonyi State was studied. A total of 2130 rice farmers were randomly selected and screened for dermatophytosis. Hair fragments, skin and nail scrapings were collected from 182 rice farmers that presented with lesions suggestive of the infection using sterile scissors and scalpels. The samples were examined by direct microscopy using 5% KOH and cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar supplemented with 0.05 mg/mL chloramphenicol and 0.5 mg/mL cycloheximide and incubated at 28 °C ± 2 °C for 7 days. The dermatophytes isolated were identified by macroscopic and microscopic methods and confirmed by molecular analysis. Demographic data and factors influencing the infection were obtained through questionnaires and analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at p<0.05 significant level with SPSS version 22. A total of 54 dermatophyte species were recovered from the samples. Dermatophytes isolated included Trichophyton tonsurans 23 (42.59%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes 14 (25.93%), Trichophyton rubrum 7 (12.96%), Trichophyton soudanense 5 (9.26%), Microsporum gypseum 3 (5.56%) and Microsporum canis 2 (3.70%). Age, gender, educational status and family size of the farmers and their interactions with domestic animals influenced the distribution of dermatophyte species isolated. Out of 182 rice farmers screened, the age-group 16-26 years were most infected with the infection 71 (39.01%), followed by 39 (21.43%) between the age-group 27-37 years and a decline between the age-group 49-59 years 15 (8.24%). The females were more infected 144 (79.12%) than the males 38 (20.88%). The infection among the females was found to be significant (P<0.05). Among the skin infections observed in the study areas, tinea capitis 76 (41.76%) was the most predominant type of infection followed by tinea unguium (onychomycosis) 59 (32.42%) and tinea corporis 47 (25.82%). It is expected that the study will be an eye-opener to the government, non-governmental organizations as well as community-based organizations to execute various intervention programmes like public health education and improved farming conditions to help reduce the burden of the infection in the area.

Opis:
This paper assesses the impact of access to agricultural credit on the agricultural productivity of 422 smallholder farmers that cultivate maize or rice in the Western and Eastern province of Rwanda. Stratified, simple random and convenience sampling techniques were used to sample districts, sectors, cells and households. Data were collected using structured interviews and analyzed using propensity score matching techniques. Results indicated that productivity was higher by 44% among the farmers who accessed credit implying that they harvested on average an extra 440 kilograms of maize or rice. According to a crop-specific analysis, agricultural credit access had a more significant impact on maize productivity, with a difference in proportion of 68% (p = 0.000) but had no impact on rice productivity (p = 0.149). The study concludes that agricultural credit was important for Rwanda’s agricultural productivity. Thus policy measures should aim at improving smallholder farmers’ access to agricultural credit and promoting the use of modern agricultural inputs, particularly among rice farmers in Rwanda.
