The article advances a hypothesis that certain elements in the Johannine characterization of Jesus and Peter can be profitably interpreted through the lens of the ancient rhetorical device of syncrisis. The analysis consists of six main parts. First, the hypothesis itself is laid out in detail. Second, the Jewish and Christian uses of syncrisis around the turn of era is described, as proof for the possibility that this rhetorical technique was employed in the FG. Third, the status quaestionis on the use of syncrisis in the FG is provided. Fourth, some arguments are presented to justify the choice of progymnasmata as a methodological framework in the exposition of σύνκρισις between Jesus and Peter. It is argued that the ancient rhetorical exercises called progymnasmata, which contain a reliable and helpful description of ancient syncrisis, can thus provide useful criteria in the search for elements of syncrisis in the Johannine description of the relationship between Jesus and Peter. Fifth, the Johannine comparison between Jesus and Peter is viewed according to some of the basic rules of the progymnasmatic theory of syncrisis. Sixth, a detailed analysis of a few elements of the Johannine syncrisis between Jesus and Peter is presented.

Opis:
Saint Paul's epistles, especially so called pastoral epistles, bring us an unique picture of person being simultaneously master and disciple. Paul is aware that as an apostle he is always servant of God. At the same time, as a teacher he already has own disciples, like saint Timothy. The article comes up with an analysis of the relationship between master and disciple in 2Tm. Using so called socio-rhetoricalapproach, it compares Paul's model to the upbringing models known in the ancient Mediterranean: Jewish, Greek and Roman conceptions. After analysing inner texture, intertexture and social and cultural texture as well as the sacred texture it turns out that Paul made his own model of such relationship. While using many patterns form previously know models, he states that the relationship between the master and the disciple is in fact the relationship between three persons: the master, the disciple and God. Both master and disciple need to receive grace from God. Master may give his disciple an example of own life in order to inspire him. He is also able to show his disciple paths leading to God. However, God is the one who chooses his disciples, who enables them to gain both knowledge and virtues, andfinally who is the first and the most important master.

Opis:
The article deals with issues present in the humanities undergoing the changes due to rhetorization of contemporary culture. First I am discussing the impact of the variability of modern culture on traditional humanities (new methodology and new theory of science based on a rhetorical approach to the text and its symbolic and ideological meaning). This caused the great development of various rhetorical studies in the 20th century (from philosophy of language to practical art of speaking and argumentation). In our time, those studies answer the questions: 1) why and for what reasons do we depend on other people's views? 2) how can we exert a positive influence by text communication on other individuals? Therefore, nowadays we are seeing a new rhetorical trend in communication studies concerning all the culture texts – this trend also affects literary studies and cultural anthropology: academic disciplines which adopt the research tools of the traditional and new rhetorical workshop. This new attitude towards the humanities has an impact on general education at schools and universities.

Opis:
Based on the example of one of the newsreels of the Polish Film Chronicle of 1965, we have researched the issue of the usability of rhetorical figures for the analysis of the image of architecture recorded in film and its relations with the verbal rhetoric of narration as well as the pictorial rhetoric, which makes up the message of a different nature. By this we have attempted to decode the lifestyle model presented in the film and propagated by its manner of description of architecture with the use of rhetorical figures and also to decode the role and meaning of the architectural forms, which were engaged in the creation of the message of the film image. Combining the rhetorical analysis with an interpretation of the architectural forms has enabled us to identify the persuasive nature of the message of the chronicle material included in the documentary film.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu wykorzystania nagłówków prasowych w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego. Przedmiotem rozważań są nagłówki prasowe tygodnika Polityka, których autorzy sięgają po tropy stylistyczne, świadomie wpływając na semantykę tekstu. Dla czytelnika niebędącego rodzimym użytkownikiem języka polskiego tytuły tak skonstruowane stanowią swoiste lingwakulturowe zagadki. W analizie wyróżniono nagłówki zawierające metonimię, oksymoron, ironię oraz peryfrazę. Drugą część artykułu stanowi opis badania, któremu poddani zostali uczniowie jednej z grup w Studium Języka Polskiego dla Cudzoziemców w Łodzi. Uczniowie wzięli udział w dyskusji, podczas której negocjowali znaczenie prezentowanych im tytułów artykułów prasowych.
The article discusses the use of newspaper headlines in teaching Polish as a foreign language. The discussed material consists of the headlines from the weekly Polityka, whose authors use rhetorical devices, consciously influencing the meaning of the text. For a non-native reader these headlines become a kind of linguacultural riddles. The analysis contains the examples of the use of metonymy, oxymoron, irony, and circumlocution. In the second part of the article, the author describes her research, which was carried among a group of students of the School of Polish for Foreignes at the University of Lodz. They took part in a discussion, during which they negotiated the meaning of some headlines.
