    The purpose of this inquiry is to set the equivalence relations between the German modal particles etwa, schon, wohl in rhetorical questions and the corresponding particles in Polish. The communicative function of the particles according to rhetoricity will be established first. The relevance of the particles meaning in causing the rhetoricity will be considered at that. The research results should provide information about the equivalence types as well as about the real use of the particles in German and Polish in terms of rhetoric.

    Opis:
    Paratekstualność jest jednym z typów relacji transtekstualnych wyróżnionych w typologii Gerarda Genette’a. Jest to relacja uważana za jedno z najbardziej uprzywilejowanych obszarów pragmatycznego wymiaru dzieła, to jest jego oddziaływania na czytelnika. Zgodnie z koncepcją Genette’a za paratekst uważane są składniki okalające tekst właściwy, a więc tytuły, podtytuły, śródtytuły, wstępy, przedmowy, posłowia, uwagi od wydawcy itd. W artykule podjęta została problematyka funkcji elementów paratekstowych w prozie retorycznej, ukierunkowanej na oddziaływanie perswazyjne. Materiał badawczy stanowią pisma publicystyczne i oracje (czyli retoryczna proza użytkowa) jednego z najwybitniejszych przedstawicieli życia umysłowego i kulturalnego przełomu XVIII i XIX wieku – Jana Śniadeckiego. Poddane analizie jednostki paratekstowe tekstów tego autora (tytuły, podtytuły, śródtytuły oraz przedmowy) pozwoliły na obserwację, że jednostki te są znaczącą przestrzenią w konstrukcji wypowiedzi retorycznej – wprowadzają odbiorcę w atmosferę retorycznego perswadowania, zapowiadają ton i jakość dyskursu (polemiczność, dyrektywność, emocjonalność i sugestywność) oraz sygnalizują strategie (mechanizmy) perswazyjne obrane przez autora do realizacji celów swoich wystąpień (np. autokreację nadawcy poprzez topos skromności, argumenty odwołujące się do doświadczenia i postawy troski).
    The paratextuality is one of the transtextual relations distinguished in Gerard Genette’s typology. This relation is considered to be one of the most privileged area of pragmatic dimension of the work and its infl uence on the reader. According to Genette’s theory, paratexts are thought to be texts which surround a central text, i.e. titles, subtitles, intertitles, introductions, prefaces, editorial remarks etc. The article undertakes problems concerning functions of paratextual elements in the rhetorical prose as oriented to infl uence persuasively. As the research material there are taken journalistic writings and orations (i.e. applied rhetorical prose) of Jan Śniadecki – an outstanding representative of intellectual and cultural life at the turn of eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The analyzed paratextual units of texts (titles, subtitles, intertitles, and prefaces) enabled to observe that those units make a signifi cant space in constructing rhetorical utterances – they introduce the reader into an atmosphere of rhetorical persuasion, and announce a tone and quality of discourse (polemicity, instructiveness, emotionality, and suggestiveness), as well as they signal persuasive strategies chosen by the author to realize aims of his utterances (e.g. self-creation of the sender through a topos of modesty, arguments appealing to experience and attitude of care).

    The subject of the present study is the persuasive function of irony in a special type of media discourse called socio-political editorial. The use of irony enables the journalist to establish the axiological domain of editorial in order to reinforce the information content and manipulate the readers’ opinions. Therefore, the main aim of the paper is to describe the problem of language manipulation in verbal irony considered by the author as one of semantico-rhetorical means of evaluation. The analyzed articles were culled from selected web pages of French journals and magazines (2005-2008) treating about two types of social reforms and the urban violence in French suburbs.

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the discursive construction of persuasiveness in media language on the basis of the genre ‘film review,’ which is relatively rarely analysed. Thanks to a study of eighty reviews for three popular French comedies “Intouchables” (2011), “Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?” (2014) and “Le sens de la fête” (2017) several invariant persuasive traits of this kind of discourse can be described in the context of its demonstrative (epideictic) and deliberative (legislative) dimensions. These dimensions exploit the rhetorical parameters of movere and delectare related to the conative function of language combined with the phatic one. Since the use of the mentioned strategies stems from the need for film reviewers to attract and convince the addressee to see a film or not, they reflect some persuasive techniques of advertising discourse, which aim to influence one’s will and decisions. Therefore, the paper elaborates on a set of discursive strategies of persuasion (DSP), leading to dynamise and dialogise the discourse in order to reinforce or weaken the addressee’s attitude towards the presented film by means of evaluative lexis including colloquial expressions, superlatives, questions and appellative-directive forms. All these elements refer to shared values, connotation, presupposition, and the identification relationship in order to ‘lock’ the addressee in the discursive universe created by the addresser.

    Ps 18 jest trzecim najdłuższym w Psałterzu. Swe znaczenie jednak zawdzięcza nie tyle swej długości; wynika ono również i przede wszystkim z faktu, że psalm ten spełnia funkcję podsumowującą: podobnie jak jego dublet znajduje się na końcu Ksiąg Samuela (2 Sm 22), tak Ps 18 wieńczy pierwszą podsekcję pierwszej księgi Psałterza (Ps 1–18). Jego tytuł, szczególnie rozwinięty, to sugeruje: „w dniu, w którym Yhwh wybawił go z ręki wszystkich jego wrogów i z ręki Saula”. Poemat zawiera siedem fragmentów ułożonych koncentrycznie wokół deklaracji o niewinności (w. 21-30), która jednak nie przestaje stwarzać problemy. Stwierdzenie, że te wersety są późniejsze, nie usuwa trudności, a faktycznie świadczy jedynie o niezdolności do rozwiązania zagadki, która jest zawsze w centrum tej koncentrycznej kompozycji. Klucz nie pozostaje ukryty, lecz jest zaoferowany w formule, która wyznacza punkt zwrotny tekstu: „Z wiernymi jesteś wierny” (w. 26).
    Psalm 18 is the third longest in the Psalter. Still, its meaning is owed not so much to its length as mostly to the fact that the psalm fulfils a summarising function: similarly to its doublet that ends the Books of Samuel (2 Sm 22) Psalm 18 concludes the first subsection of the first book of the Psalter (Pss 1–18). It is suggested by its particularly expanded title: “when Yahweh had delivered him from all his enemies and from the clutches of Saul”. The poem includes seven fragments arranged concentrically around the declaration of innocence (vv. 21-30) which does not, however, cease to create problems. The statement that those verses are later does not eliminate the difficulties. In fact, it only indicates the inability to solve the riddle which is always in the centre of this concentric composition. The key is not hidden but offered in the formula that marks the turning point of the text: “You are faithful to the faithful” (v. 26).
    Le Ps 18 est le troisième plus long du Psautier. Son importance toutefois n’est pas seulement due à sa longueur; elle tient aussi et surtout au fait que ce psaume remplit une fonction conclusive: de même en effet que son double se trouve à la fin des livres de Samuel (2S 22), ainsi le Ps 18 conclut la première sous-section du premier livre des psaumes (Ps 1–18). Son titre, particulièrement développé, le laisse entendre: «au jour où Yhwh le délivra de la paume de tous ses ennemis et de la main de Saül». Le poème comprend sept passages organisés de manière concentrique autour d’une déclaration d’innocence (v. 21-30) qui ne laisse pas de poser problème. Prétendre que ces versets sont secondaires ne saurait lever la difficulté; cela ne fait, en réalité, que témoigner de l’impuissance à résoudre l’énigme que constitue toujours le centre d’une composition concentrique. La clé n’est pas cachée, elle offerte dans la formule qui marque le tournant du texte: «Avec le fidèle tu es fidèle» (v. 26).

    The paper presents various ways of paraphrasing understood as a process of the expression of the same meaning via other words. Collected material shows a wide range of phenomena in the examined corpus of temporary press statements, wealth and the multi-directionality metatekstual expressions by which speakers signal the transition to the paraphrase. This has to do with the general function of paraphrasing which is a rhetorical technique in support of the process of the interpretation of the tekst. The added value is a revival of communication and increase confidence in the dialogue partner, as well as confidence to the language as a medium capable of expressing reality.
