The article is devoted to the social and political activity of Anatol Osipovich Bonch-Osmolovsky, who was one of the best representatives of the neopopulist direction in the revolutionary movement of Belarus and Russia in 1905–1917. This political biography of one of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party leaders looks at the revolutionary process and the establishment of democratic institutions in a predominantly peasant country by following Bonch-Osmolovsky’s opinions. The attitudes of the “red landowner” to the farm program, to the SocialistRevolutionary Party’s terror, to the Belarusian national movement, and to the idea of Belarus’ political independence are analysed in this article.

Opis:
"Stateless socialism‖" is the fourth chapter of Edward Abramowski‘s book Socialism and State. A Contribution to the Critique of Contemporary Socialism. Abramowski, a Polish political philosopher and social theorist, was also one of the founders of the cooperative movement in Poland. Written at the turn of 1903 and 1904 and published in 1904 (Polish Society of Publishers, Lviv) under the alias ―M. A. Czajkowski‖, Socialism and State is one of Abramowski‘s most important works, and is devoted to the philosophical justifications of socialist politics, the subversive character of social facts, and the doctrine of stateless socialism, the realisation of which was, according to Abramowski, the cooperative movement. In opposition to both classical Marxism and the social-democratic trend, which found in the state a tool by which the workers‘ movement would free itself from the chains of capitalism, by taking over, democratizing, and at the same time expanding state institutions, Abramowski proposes a vision of a grassroots revolution of specialised associations. Their ideology does not constitute a political doctrine, but is political practice itself, the domain of the common that allows the masses to create an autonomous subjective experience. Thus, the philosopher presents his concept of class struggle, grasped as a creative element of differentiation of forms of socialisation. This understanding also allows him to define class not as a substantial feature of a political subject, but as a kind of condition or action. He perceives the revolution as a transformation of the subject position in relation to the socio-economic conditions that define it, an ethical change that opens new possibilities for community life in the heart of the ancien regime.

The article deals with the impact of revolutionary movement of 1860-1881 on the judicial reform introduced by Russian Tsar Alexander II. The reform comprising the Law on Establishment of Courts, the Criminal Trial Act, the Civil Trial Act and the Law on Penalties Imposed by the Conciliation Courts was designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the disfunctional judicial system of the pre-reform period and allowed for the public control of the judicial decisions. By doing this, the reform opened the door to the needed changes in the Russian society that significantly lagged behind Western Europe. The measures taken against the revolutionary movement of the 1880s and the 1890s negatively affected the reform legislation and distorted many democratic institutions introduced by the judicial reform.

Opis:
The study is dedicated to Otokar Vavra’s cinematographic “Hussites Revolutionary Trilogy”. The films were shot in the 1950s as colour motion pictures. The main idea is based on Alois Jirasek’s trilogy and Frantisek Palacky’s philosophy of history combined with some ideological concepts revolving around the communist interpretation of Hussites. The three films: Jan Hus (1954), Jan Žižka (1955) and Proti všem (Against All Odds, 1957) pose some sort of a challenge by showing a religious movement from an atheist’s perspective. Vavra indeed created a work of propaganda, a heroic story of the Czech folk fighting against foreign powers (lords and nobles, crusaders) which had the potential of underpinning the communist ideology in Czechoslovakia. On the other hand, the trilogy took in a new symbolic meaning after the 1968 occupation by the Warsaw Pact.

In her reply, Angela Dimitrakaki reflects on possible means of transition to the common as a radically different socio-economic paradigm.

Globally, mainstream media excludes or misrepresents many societal groups, resulting in significant community absences. In these contexts, alternative media plays a vital role in offering meaningful self-representation and political participation. This type of media becomes crucial in revolutionary contexts, where people rise against the injustices of their governments in hopes of change. This article offers a case study approach to revolutionary music in the Middle East, where we review the socio-economic and political contexts behind the emergence of alternative media in Lebanon and Egypt. We analyze our cases by using Bailey et al.’s (2007) comprehensive approaches to alternative media. We propose that revolutionary music evolves and adapts to larger changes in the public sphere. Still, as the article concludes, while music can enable a persistent community when demanding change, it does not guarantee an actual change in the political system.

The article presents an overview of Bronisława Waligórska’s book Listy z Cytadeli 1886 (Letters from the Citadel 1886), which were prepared for publication by Monika Rudaś-Grodzka together with the “Archiwum Kobiet” team. In this study, I present the methodological features of the Archive’s research project in the context of women’s history, while also referring to the ways in which the figure of Bronisława Waligórska has been placed in the context of the Polish tradition of cultural images of female revolutionaries. The article also draws attention to the restrictive role of myth in women’s biographies and underlines the importance of the body in the reclaiming the material (and historical) dimensions of women’s personal writings. The physical connection between the body and the space of the prison, as well as its influence on the form of correspondence, is also emphasized here.

In the Russian social thinking, the notion „dissident movement” has appeared twice. For the first time, as a historical and theoretical term in the essay The Dissident (1866) by Nikolay Sokolov, and then, a century later in the autobiographical The Confession of a Dissident (1990) by Alexander Zinoviev. Zinoviev considered „the dissident movement” to be social practices, which allow for social generalization. The first part of the article represents the thinking on the initial stage of dissident movement understanding. The Russian essay writers of the 60s of 19th century analyzed this phenomenon based on the European experience, and connected it with the revolutionary struggle against the government and society to build socialist future for the mankind. In the second part of the article, the „dissident movement” is seen as a trial of a philosopher and sociologist who lived in socialism and communist period, in order to describe the merciless technologies to eliminate an individual from the Soviet intelligent society, in the 60s and 70s of 20th century.

The dehumanisation and exploitation of the environment of the Niger Delta has become a template for fear of the end of human existence. This has driven an increased interest in studies about Anthropocene. From the 1980s, Robert Buell and Adrian Ivakhiv have advanced what Smith Kopnina terms The Environmental Condition to the frontiers of global scholarship thereby greening the humanities. Scholars in environmental studies like Bill McGuire have decried the rising level of floods, the ignorance of the destruction of the environment and the possibility of an apocalypse. Creative writers and dramatic artistes alike, including film makers from Africa and beyond have engaged in the exploration of environmental interests focusing on its degenerating condition, often depicting how people could take social action towards liberating themselves and their environment from oppressive chains. The study aims to interrogate how these stated eco-critical aims have been achieved in selected movies. Through the concept of anthropocene and eco-criticism, the paper undertakes acontent analysis of Frank Rajah Arase’s Somewhere in Africa: The cries of Humanityand David Attwood’s Blood and Oilto explore these concerns.

Today’s political sociologists are once again interested in the study of the crisis of mass-based parties, anti-politics and anti-parliamentarism, crisis in the authority of the political class, prevailing corporate interests within republican institutions, and populism. Political sociology however, takes the party, as a construct of political sociology alone, without consideration upon its militancy and action, as the party, which objectifies the foundation of a State, and as a result the party becomes, simply an historical category. We approach the problem of the modern state from many angles; analysing the nature of a political party as such; the ideological dangers of determinism and spontaneism which a party necessarily must struggle with; the type of non-administrative internal regime which is necessary for a party to be effective and so on. The problem we seek to elaborate is the specific character of the collective action that makes possible the passage from a sectored, corporate and subordinate role of purely negative opposition, to a leading role of conscious action towards not merely a partial adjustment within the system, but posing the issue of the State in its entirety. In developing this theme – as a study of the real relations between the political party, the classes and the State – a two-fold consideration is devoted to the study of Machiavelli and Marx: first from the angle of the real relations between the two, as thinkers of revolutionary politics, of action; and secondly from a perspective which would derive from the Marxist doctrines an articulated system of contemporary politics, as found in The Prince.

Abstract: While ‘tragic’ protest and protest songs are normally conceived of as originating on the political left of American culture, in recent years protest from the political right, specifically the racist right has flown under the cultural radar of most researchers of American studies. This article strives to explore the ways in which the neo-Confederate movement is currently protesting the state of cultural, political, and social affairs in the contemporary American South. The neo-Confederate movement is one of the oldest forms of ‘conservative’ protest present in the United States, originating out of the defeat of the Confederacy and the civic religion of the ‘Lost Cause’ of the last decades of the 1800s into the first three decades of the 1900s. Since the neo-Confederate movement is both revolutionary and conservative, it is possible to derive some valuable insights into the contemporary reactionary politics of the right by examining a brief sampling of the protest songs, novels and essays of this particular subculture.
