The reviewed book is devoted to the issue of smart specialization of Polish regions. Smart specialization are supposed to help to mobilize and fully use regions’ endogenous development potential. Recently on the publishing market there appeared an interesting work devoted to the issue of populism in the current politics. This book definitely deserves special attention. Secondly, the reviewed work presents the reader with a wider perspective.

Gender, Neoliberalism and Distinction Through Linguistic Capital: Taiwanese Narratives of Struggle and Strategy, is an aptly titled book as, on one hand, it focuses on gender, neoliberalism, distinction and linguistic capital, and, on the other hand, it addresses these issues through narratives that pertain to everyday struggles and strategies that seek to address and overcome these struggles in the Taiwanese context. The title lives up to the expectations that it creates for the reader. If you keep the title in mind while reading the book, the author, Mark Seilhamer, provides reading that is not only coherent but also informative and, above all, pleasant to read. As the issues discussed in the book are rather complex and intertwined, addressing them in book format benefits the reader, something which Seilhamer is keenly aware of. Had these issues been addressed in a journal article or a number of journal articles, it is likely that it would have resulted in dense, if not tiresome reading. Some may take issue with the author’s somewhat informal and candid style, but I think it meshes well with the narrative approach, making the book more accessible to non-academics. Overall the book comes across as approachable and easy to read, even to people who are not familiar with the issues discussed in the book.

In the context of buoyant research on second language acquisition (SLA), language learning motivation has remained one of the most active fields of inquiry for more than 60 years (Al-Hoorie & MacIntyre, 2019; Ushioda, 2019). As a prevalent phenomenon in second language acquisition (SLA), crosslinguistic influence (CLI) has attracted ever-lasting attention, as reflected by the publication of several monographs (e.g., Cai, 2021; Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008; Odlin, 1989; Ringbom, 2007), many edited volumes (e.g., Alonso, 2016; Gass & Selinker, 1983), and numerous research articles. In these books and papers, mounting evidence for CLI has been accumulated in various areas of languages. In particular, CLI may occur between first language (L1) and second language (L2) in lexicon, grammar, phonology, discourse, and pragmatics, with its effects being both positive and negative. Besides, it has been shown that the occurrence of CLI is constrained by a variety of factors, such as linguistic and psycholinguistic factors and those related to learning environment and language use (Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008). CLI has been addressed from diverse theoretical perspectives including universal grammar, functional linguistics, and psycholinguistics (see Cai, 2021 for a review).

The book by Łukasz Jureńczyk entitled: „The war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Afghanistan in the years 1994–2012” (original title: “Wojna z talibami i Al-Kaidą. Afganistan w latach 1994–2012”) presents a broad spectrum of actions that have been taken by the international community and local activists, who set themselves the goal of overthrowing the Taliban groups in Afghanistan and combat the world's most dangerous terrorist organization – Al-Qaeda. The basis for author’s dissertation was the situation in the country since the seizure of power by Al-Qaeda through a period of keeping it, until the most recent period. Ł. Jureńczyk took into account cultural contexts, the international situation, and the differences in the exercise of power by the terrorist organization and the socio-economic outline.

The last presidential elections gave rise numerous questions and doubts – particularly in the scientific and media environments – regarding the conditions for electoral behaviors in Poles, as signaled by the results achieved by particular candidates. The media discourse abounded in more or less definite statements regarding voter turnout data for particular population groups, the destabilization of the electorate’s political preferences and the phenomenon of the transfer of votes in between the supporters of particular candidates, both in the historical approach and in the course of the election campaign. The intensity and temperature of these discussions were indicative of the fact how poorly this area is penetrated empirically.

‘The EU towards international criminal tribunals. Genesis, Concept and Practice of Cooperation’ is a study that focuses on the important research question of the broad and multi-aspectual problem of criminal tribunals on the international arena. This has been tackled in many Polish and foreign publications, however, to date no work has studied the EU cooperation with the three international criminal tribunals – two ad hoc ones and a permanent one. Recenzowana książka T. Piketty'ego stała się jednym z bestsellerów na świecie, a w niedługim czasie od jej opublikowania ukazały się recenzje wyrażające opinie zarówno pozytywne (a nawet entuzjastyczne), jak też wysoce krytyczne. Te drugie w pewnej mierze nawiązują do teorii K. Marksa, którego dorobek wykorzystuje Autor w tytule książki oraz częściowo w badaniach. Tematem omawianej publikacji jest tworzenie się, podział i posiadanie kapitału (bogactwa, majątku) we współczesnej gospodarce światowej, zwłaszcza krajów wysoko rozwiniętych. Kluczowe zadanie badawcze podjęte przez Piketty'ego dotyczy zmian w tworzeniu i podziale bogactwa oraz dochodów od XVIII w. do czasów współczesnych, a także lekcji z tego płynących dla społeczeństwa oraz państwa obecnie i w przyszłości. W tym kontekście ważne miejsce zajmuje problem nierówności ekonomicznych i społecznych narastających w globalnym procesie pomnażania kapitału, który pozostaje w rękach wąskiej grupy jego posiadaczy. Nasila się potrzeba przeciwdziałania niekorzystnym zjawiskom, co skłania do rozwoju państwa socjalnego, nowego typu polityki publicznej oraz zastosowania silnych instrumentów w celu redystrybucji dochodów.
The reviewed book by T. Piketty has become one of the bestsellers in the world, and soon after its publication appeared reviews expressing both positive (and even enthusiastic) opinions, as well as highly critical ones. The latter, to some extent, refer to the theory of K. Marx, whose works are used by the author in the title of the book and partly in research. The subject of this publication is creation, division and possession of capital (wealth, wealth) in the modern world economy, especially highly developed countries. The key research task undertaken by Piketty concerns changes in the creation and distribution of wealth and income from the 18th century to the present, as well as lessons from this for the society and the present and future. In this context, an important place is occupied by the problem of economic and social inequalities arising in the global process of capital multiplication, which remains in the hands of a small group of its owners. The need to counteract unfavorable phenomena is growing, which leads to the development of a social state, a new type of public policy and the use of strong instruments to redistribute income.

Książka jest drugą zwartą publikacją Rosy de la Fuente na temat autonomii indiańskich w Ameryce Łacińskiej. Siedem lat temu opublikowała fascynujące studium powstania i rozwoju idei terytorialnych autonomii na południu Meksyku oraz ewolucji dyskursu autonomicznego używanego przez organi zacje indiańskie1. O ile była to książka skupiona na minionych dekadach i procesie samej walki o autonomię, to obecna publikacja pod redakcją de la Fuente i Navarro Gómez dotyczy kwestii funkcjonowania autonomicznych jednostek terytorialnych w złożonych okolicznościach politycznych, prawnych, ekonomicznych i społeczno-kulturowych. Innymi słowy, jest to rzecz o codziennych problemach, ograniczeniach i wyzwaniach, przed którymi stoją społeczności rdzenne Kolumbii i Ekwadoru w praktycznej realizacji swoich wspaniale brzmiących konstytucyjnych zdobyczy.

Doctor Arkadiusz Kawecki is an employee of the Institute of Political Science and European Studies at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Szczecin. His academic interest is focused on the problems connected with the formation of a democratic system in Poland, developing election processes, and the birth of local communities. In addition, he is concerned with German studies. The reviewed work is en endeavour to present the processes of birth and the following stages of the formation of voting attitudes and behaviours of local communities. It has been conducted taking into consideration the development in the former Szczecin district of political organizations, individual and collective examples of political activity, the process of election campaigns and the results of elections. The proceedings have been performed on the background of transformations and stages of democratization of public life in Poland, institutionalization of which took place as a result of another presidential, parliamentary, and local authority elections.

Opis:
With these words of Mark Antony – as a motto – Patrick Wawrzyński could start his book. Published in 2012, the work is titled "President Lech Kaczynski. The unfinished narratives" (Prezydent Lech Kaczyński. Narracje niedokończone), and it is just such an attempt of doing justice to the tragically deceased president of the Republic of Poland. The author has undertaken the task of presenting the views of Lech Kaczynski as they actually were – separating them from incorrect interpretations and opinions attributed by other actors of the Polish political scene: his opponents as well as allies.

The reviewed position is a novelty on the publishing market in Poland. It was written as a report based on a scientific research run by Sociology of Politics Panel of the Institute of Sociology of the University of Warsaw directed by Jacek Raciborski. The reading matter of the book concerns an analysis Jerzy Buzek and Leszek Miller cabinets, which by the fact of a complete difference between the mentioned above makes it only more reading-worthty. There should be doubt that the undertaken problem is a point of interest for political scientists and sociologists, however it does not make it any easier to study. One of the most significant problems, which authors did shed some light on, is a fact that their respondents tend to stay silent on many cases.

Terrorism in a contemporary world plays a vital role. It becomes more and more dangerous due to technical development and access to information on terrorist means and methods allows better communication between terrorist groups. Contemporary political terrorism characterizes variety and difficulty far more developed now then centuries ago. Terrorists are able to interfere into politics of different countries, using terrorism actions to achieve particular goals. The increase of conflicts and tensions on ethics, religion, ideology or sociology made it possible for terrorism to appear in new forms and become a solution for current global issues.

Michał Kosman’s book is worthy of attention not just within the context of the ongoing discussions regarding deteriorating Polish-German relations. It deserves to be read for a number of reasons, in order to verify widespread opinions on the role of Germany in European politics in the final decade of the twentieth century. The most important of these reasons are: high competence of the young researcher (affiliated with universities in Bydgoszcz and Poznań), his balanced opinions and comments formulated on the basis of German-language publications and magazine articles, and thorough factographical presentation.

Empirical science terminology generally understands humility as a self-view grounded trait characterized mainly by accurate self-awareness and manifested respect for others. Related studies have been carried out for almost 20 years; however, it is still a quite new area in psychological research. Moreover, this seems to be an interesting area because of rising egocentric and narcissistic tendencies that are inconsistent with humble attitudes. Handbook of Humility: Theory, Research, and Applications, reviewed here, offers an adequate basis for understanding humility. It presents main aspects of interdisciplinary approach to humility-related issues like definitions, measurement, and its manifestations in different contexts. The most important task of contemporary science is to serve humanity. It seems that technology develops in two different ways. On the one hand technology does everything to make human’s life carefree, easy and safe. But on the other scientists do their best to solve most pressing problems so that people could once and for all forget about troubles like AIDS, cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. Until today technical progress was followed by the progress of the humanity but it seems that contemporary hi-technology left behind moral reflections of people. Michael Sandel’s book e Case against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering is a moral reflection on those problems accompanied by technological changes. It is an attempt to establish a border that cannot be crossed – on its one side human being is still a human being but on the other one it is just an artificially stimulated machine.

A modern development of biological sciences, used by biomedicine with the help of biotechnology, has contributed largely to an artificial interference in natural life processes. Biotechnologies allow people a bigger and bigger control of their own nature, population and biosphere. Due to this fact, the character of traditional authority changes radically. In this context a notion of biopolitics has a growing popularity. The history and also the diversity of problems discussed in this field is approached by the synthetic work of Thomas Lemke entitled Biopolitics. The author does a historical reconstruction of this concept, used for the first time by Rudolf Kjellén in 1920. He dedicates a lot of time to the theme of antinaturalistic and antipolicistic interpretation of biopolitics, started in the seventies of the 20th century by Michel Foucault, and continued in the works of Giorgio Agamben, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri.

Jacek Poniedziałek’s book is devoted to issues extremely important and current. Exploration of the social identity formation process, including a regional identity, has now a great importance not only from a cognitive point of view. Transformational changes in Poland after 1989 meant not only profound changes in the system of public authorities and the economic system. They also had a signifi cant impact on the consciousness of Polish society and its attitude towards the state, power apparatus, and the most important problems of collective life. Extremely important direction of changes in the public authority model became a more and more articulated desire for decentralization and deconcentration of unified and the indivisible sphere of state power so far.

The dynamic and range of polemics among social scientists can testify to branches of science vivacity and progress. Especially when those polemics’ implications are not closed inside the academic world, but they influence social and political life. This situation refers to liberal-communitarian debate. In 1956 Peter Laslett in Philosophy, Politics and Society announced the death of political philosophy. This subdisciplines’ end, as well as the whole philosophy, was connected with the rudimental modern world’s split in the humanistic and scientific vision. The collapse and rot of the political philosophy (Leo Strauss) reached their culmination in the logical positivism and its derivatives’ supremacy time. This neopositivism had been looking for the clear criteria of the science and metaphysic’s demarcation and, at the same time, had tried to exclude metaphysic outside the legitimated reflection.

The book "School bullying. Socio-pedagogical analysis of the phenomenon" by A. Tlusciak-Deliowska (2017) is an important theoretical contribution to the field of social pedagogy, social psychology and educational studies. The subject of the analysis - the phenomenon of school bullying - has an enormous impact on people's lives and achievements throughout their school years and beyond. This means that a deeper understanding of bullying mechanisms and its prevention are of paramount importance for the future of our societies. This book's vital contribution to the field relies on a thorough revision and critical analysis of the state of knowledge, regarding the phenomenon of school bullying, which at this point, has not been carried out within the landscape of Polish pedagogy nor psychology. This complex and comprehensive review of world-wide literature and research about interpersonal aggression amongst children, is methodically structured and systemised in accordance with the newest strategies in an attempt to understand the phenomenon of bullying, its socio-cultural and psychological conditioning and most importantly to identify the most efficient strategies and programmes dedicated to prevention. The author distinguishes two main perspectives that she uses as frames for the analysis. The first is the individualised one - focused on personal differences amongst persons involved in school bullying, based on biological, personal and social factors. The second perspective is the processual one, based on group dynamics, social positioning, power relations and status hierarchies within peer groups at school. Moreover, the author has taken an informed decision to interpret school bullying within the symbolic field of social interaction that takes place in a peer group, using functionalism as one of the chosen interpretative frames for analysis. The book opens with an overview of works dedicated to etymology and a selection of classical publications devoted to bullying and mobbing. The cultural conditioning of how these terms are defined is discussed at length. Furthermore, the questions of anonymity, the process of ongoing primary and secondary stigmatization of the victim are analysed. International statistical data on self-reported bullying and the victimization of school children gives the reader an improved understanding of how widely spread and common this issue is. Moreover, the author runs through multiple methods of measuring the attitudes towards bullying, the experiences of bullying and group socio-metrics related to it. In the individualised approach, she looks at who the common victim and perpetrator are and how they are individually conditioned and characterised? What is relatively original and fresh is the acknowledgement and the exploration of the role of a witness in a situation of bullying. This discovery may be crucial in building strategies of prevention, impediment and coping. In the group approach, the role of a family as a support buffer is discussed and also identified as initially responsible for aggressive behaviour. The author considers classroom ecology, issues of popularity and group relations, descriptive classroom norms and social cohesion, which surprisingly may be linked to bullying. The analysis includes a debate over the active or the passive roles of witnesses and their responsibility for strengthening the bully or for protecting the victim. A fascinating discovery highlighted in the book is that bullying is more likely to take place in smaller classes than in larger ones. Moreover, according to the author’s findings, witnesses who defend a victim in a solidly structured group with a well established leader suffer greater emotional and positional costs than when defending a victim in a loosely structured or unstructured ones. The author discusses peer culture, the culture of bullying, its socio-interactional character and the requirement of collective group inaction to permit the bullying to continue. The author also shows that a steady pattern of bullying works as a stabilisation of inter-peer relations in the classroom. The added value and perhaps the most practical dimension of the book is the assessment of different prevention and intervention programmes that combat bullying in schools and have been developed in multiple countries. The overview of these programmes leads to useful recommendations of which prevention and intervention programmes work the best and the book concludes with the useful discovery that in such programmes one should focus on the role of witnesses. After reading this book I view bullying from a different perspective and it has triggered me to think this may be the case for many other readers, ready to engage with this sophisticated work, which is written in a clear and easy to read manner. As a mother of two young children, I rate this book as source of solid knowledge and I have found many unexpected answers to questions I had about bullying. I also feel that parts of this book should be considered a must read for teachers, school councillors, therapists, educators, students of relevant faculties and parents.

The beginning of the 21st century was a period in which the international order was still in the phase of transformation. The bipolar system, which fell into disintegration along with the end of the Cold War, did not trigger the end of history as some had expected. e international community faced new challenges which will probably require new, more effective instruments. The new conditions of the evolution of the international order pose difficult questions to be answered by analysts of international relations. The questions relate to the analysis of the present order as well as the directions of its short, middle – and long-term development. e international order, as with most of the elements in the theory of international relations, may be analysed from the perspective of various research schools. In Polish literature on the subject it has been viewed mainly from the angle of the classical paradigms: realistic, liberal or normative.

A serious disease of the contemporary world is a state of “the loss of being”. We started to see redundance of metaphysics as a result of reduction of reality to a physical dimension that had been made by positivism. There was no place for scientific discipline which subject had undergone destruction. Being was reduced to objects, to objectivity, to things which only appear to man. “is way we have lost the being, only objects have stayed, things which surrounded us (…) the true existence is confront with material existence.” The same vision of contemporary situation can be found among representatives of the “end of philosophy” discourse such as J.-F. Lyotard, G. Vattimo, O. Marquardt, R. Rorty, P. Laslett.

Two renowned French economists Antoine Brunet and Jean-Paul Guichard are the authors of the interesting book entitled “China the international hegemonic leader? Professor Guichard from a University in Nice deals with the economic analysis as well as with the international relations and Antoine Brunet, the founder of AB Marches, in the years 2003–2007 won first place in the French economists ranking. For ten years he was chief of the strategic HSBC France bank. Since the date the book was published a discussion broke out over the question asked in the title. The intention of the authors was to uncover the totalitarian aspirations of China for domination over the world. They propose a thesis that the western world faces a war and the means of defense is the economy.

Opis:
Political scientists, in their research work, concentrate on various topics. For some, thoughts and ideas of a famous statesman are fascinating and for others is the future influence of NGO’s on local communities. One thing, one time is said to have enough potential to unite attention of most of political scientists, as this is an event when they may observe how matters that they are especially interested in are apprehended. This mentioned event is, in my opinion, what elections indeed are and some may even say that elections are the festival of politics and sometimes of democracy.

Opis:
The freedom of speech and the right to information are essential human and citizenship rights, which are guaranteed in the constitution and numerous international conventions. The book under review focuses on widely understood issues of the free expression of views. The authors of the articles are either scholars who deal with the legal aspects of mass media or journalists, who are part of those media. As a result, the authors’ opinions and proposals for change not only deepen our knowledge, but also broaden the scope of thinking about the freedom of speech as practiced by the media.
