Opis:
Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) has been extensively used in aircraft turbine-engine components, aircraft structural components, aerospace fasteners, high performance automotive parts, marine applications, medical devices and sports equipment. However, wide-spread use of this alloy has limits because of difficulty to machine it. One of the major difficulties found during machining is development of poor quality of surface in the form of higher surface roughness. The present investigation has been concentrated on studying the effects of cutting parameters of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on surface roughness of the product during turning of titanium alloy. Box-Behnken experimental design was used to collect data for surface roughness. ANOVA was used to determine the significance of the cutting parameters. The model equation is also formulated to predict surface roughness. Optimal values of cutting parameters were determined through response surface methodology. A 100% desirability level in the turning process for economy was indicated by the optimized model. Also, the predicted values that were obtained through regression equation were found to be in close agreement to the experimental values.

Opis:
Treatment of Municipal wastewater by Electrocoagulation (EC) process using punched aluminium and zinc electrodes was studied in a batch EC cell reactor. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the operating parameters for the removal of % Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and % Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from Municipal Sewage. Effect of operating parameters such as Electrode Distance (x1), Electrolysis Time (x2) and Voltage (x3) has been optimized for the removal of TSS and COD. The prediction of removal percentage of TSS and COD in various Operational circumstances is done by using Quadratic model. The significance of each operating parameter was computed by Analysis of variance (ANOVA). To achieve the maximum removal of % TSS and % COD, the optimum conditions were Electrode distance(x1)-3 cm, Electrolysis Time (x2)-70.299 minute and Voltage (x3)-6.5V. It was observed that the performance of electrocoagulation process increased up to 61.45% for COD removal, and 73.73% for TSS removal using punched electrode compared to plane electrodes.

Opis:
Background. A research was conducted on the ultrasonic pretreatment of chicken droppings for biogas production. The hydrolysis step in anaerobic digestion is rate-limiting and time-consuming due to the presence of complex molecules in the organic wastes. Pretreatment encourages faster digestion and yields improvement by making the organic waste ready for microbial attack. Material and methods. To achieve the optimum sonication time and slurry ratio for maximum biogas production, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used in this study. 13 experimental runs were developed according to Central Composite Design with different setup conditions and five replicates at center points to observe the Response, i.e., volumes of biogas produced. This was achieved with the aid of a software package (Design Expert 12.0.1.0). A quadratic model was developed for the responses and a 3D response surface plot was obtained to analyze the effect of the variables and their interactions to determine their optimum levels. Results. The numerical optimization and point prediction result gave a sonication time of 18.6 minutes and a slurry ratio of 2.0 (i.e., 2.0 : 1.0). Under this condition, the predicted maximum volume of biogas production is 24.514 ml in 12 days. This prediction was tested and validated, and the volume of biogas produced under the same conditions was 22.282 ml. This confirmed the adequacy of the predicted model as only a 10.02% error was recorded. Conclusions. Henceforth, the optimum sonication time and slurry ratio were achieved for maximum biogas production from chicken droppings.

In this study, the effectiveness of using natural bio-coagulants and bio-flocculants to treat textile wastewater through the coagulation-flocculation method was examined. These bio-based agents have several advantages over chemical agents, including biodegradability, natural abundance, low toxicity, and low cost. A bio-coagulant (holm oak acorn (HOA)) and a bio-flocculant (cactus juice) were used to investigate the capacity for turbidity removal and decolorization of textile wastewater. The UV spectrophotometer was used to characterize the discharges before and after treatment, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) levels were calculated. Box-Behnken design (BBD) coupled with response surface methodology (RSM) were utilized to optimize the process and reduce turbidity and decolorization in textile wastewater. The obtained results show that under the optimal conditions (0.5 g•L-1 of HOA, 15 mL•L-1 of cactus juice, and a pH of 7), decolorization and turbidity removal were achieved at 69% and 90%, respectively. This study demonstrates the potential of using bio-coagulants and bio-flocculants in the treatment of textile wastewater.

This study aims to optimize the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) in pump water from fish flour factories through electrocoagulation technology and to determine the effects of the main operation parameters. Pump water has high conductivity (40.1 mS), due to the presence of dissolved salts and contains high concentration of organic substances (12,360 mg/L of TSS and 520 mg/L of fats). In this study, pump water was treated in an electrocoagulation reactor with aluminum electrodes using Response Surface Methodology with a 3k factorial design based on two factors, current intensity (I) of 8-13 A and treatment time (t) of 20-40 minutes. The percentage of TSS removed from the water was used as the response variable. The results revealed that I and t significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the process. In accordance, the optimal operational parameters for TSS removal were I = 13 A and t = 30 minutes. Using these conditions, TSS removal efficiency of 99.9% was achieved. The sewage sludge generated with these optimal process conditions indicated 19.3% of ash content, 6.2% of salt, 1.7% of aluminum, 0.3% of iron, 0.4% of potassium, 256 ppm of zinc, and 2.1% of phosphorus. Hence, the results of this study affirm that electrocoagulation can be considered as a solution for marine pollution caused by fishing industries.

Use of bran oil in various edible and nonedible industries is very common. In this research work, efficient and optimized methodology for the recovery of rice bran oil has been investigated. The present statistical study includes parametric optimization, based on experimental results of rice bran oil extraction. In this study, three solvents, acetone, ethanol and solvent mixture (SM) [acetone: ethanol (1:1 v/v)] were employed in extraction investigations. Response surface methodology (RSM), an optimization technique, was exploited for this purpose. A five level central composite design (CCD) consisting four operating parameter, like temperature, stirring rate, solvent-bran ratio and contact time were examined to optimize rice bran oil extraction. Experimental results showed that oil recovery can be enhanced from 71% to 82% when temperature, solvent-bran ratio, stirring rate and contact time were kept at 55°C, 6:1, 180 rpm and 45 minutes, respectively while fixing the pH of the mixture at 7.1.

In process robustness studies, it is desirable to minimize the influence of noise factors on the system and simultaneously determine the levels of controllable factors optimizing the overall response or outcome. In the cases when a random effects model is applicable and a fixed effects model is assumed instead, an increase in the variance of the coefficient vector should be expected. In this paper, the impacts of this assumption on the results of the experiment in the context of robust parameter design are investigated. Furthermore, two criteria are considered to determine the optimum settings for the control factors. In order to better understand the proposed method and to evaluate its performances, a numerical example for the case of 'the smaller the better' is included.

Stabilized landfill leachate contains high fractions of refractory organics that cannot be effectively degraded by simple biological or physicochemical treatment. Thus, primary treatment was required to improve biodegradability and enhance treatment efficiency. This study investigated the role of Boron-Doped Diamond (BDD) and platinum (Pt) anodes at a current density of 29.2 and 33.3 mA/cm2 in the electrochemical processes for the pretreatment of stabilized leachate. A three-compartment electrochemical reactor was used in the research to enhance the removal of ionic pollutants. The pollutants were measured as total dissolved solids (TDS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4–N), and nitrite (NO2–). The reactor performance was then analyzed using a regular two-level factorial design. The results showed that the electrochemical process effectively removed organic and inorganic pollutants. The highest removal was obtained at 33.3 mA/cm2 using the BDD, measured around 48, 82, 60, and 79% for TDS, COD, NH4–N, and NO2–, respectively. Meanwhile, the specific energy consumption for COD removal was estimated to reach 1.5 and 1.55 Wh/g for BDD and Pt, respectively. These results imply that the type of anodes and applied current densities significantly influence the treatment efficiency.

Opis:
The constant industry development results in the increase of number and diversity of substances deposited with wastewater. Moreover, requirements for wastewater utilization are constantly restricted, thus there is the need of treatment methods improvement. In recent studies significant attention is devoted to advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), in which highly reactive radicals able to treat concentrated, hardly degradable and toxic industrial wastewaters are generated. Colored wastewaters produced during industrial processes usually characterize with significant content of refractive organic compounds which additionally posses mutagenic and cancerogenic properties. Classical treatment methods of such wastewaters (e.g. sorption, coagulation) hardly ever guarantee efficient dyes degradation. Thus, the treatment of colored wastewater with the use of one of AOP ie Fenton reagent was performed. First, preliminary studies focused on the influence of H2O2 dose, initial pH value, reaction time and Fe2+/H2O2 weight ratio on treatment effect were performed. Obtained results will be further used for development of crucial studies plan in which Surface Response Method will be used. The study will allow to formulate mathematical models describing changes of wastewater decolorization effects as a function of investigated parameters. Thus, the optimization of the process will be possible.
W wyniku ciągłego rozwoju przemysłu wzrasta ilość i różnorodność zanieczyszczeń odprowadzanych ze ściekami. Ponadto wymagania dotyczące unieszkodliwiania ścieków ulegają ciągłym zaostrzeniom, dlatego istnieje duża potrzeba doskonalenia metod oczyszczania. W ostatnich latach dużą uwagę poświęca się badaniom i wdrażaniu tzw. metod pogłębionego utleniania, które polegają na generowaniu wysoko reaktywnych rodników mających zdolność oczyszczania stężonych, trudno degradowanych i toksycznych ścieków przemysłowych. Ścieki barwne powstające w wyniku procesów produkcyjnych zazwyczaj charakteryzują się dużą zawartością trudno rozkładalnych związków organicznych, mających często charakter muta- i kancerogenny.

Opis:
The influences of the pollution layer parameters including; conductivity, position and length on the performance of high-voltage cylindrical insulator were investigated. Parameters effects and their interactions have been assessed and determined using the variance statistical technique and the relation between parameters and the flashover voltage, maximum electric field and the breakdown strength is modeled by the response surface methodology (RMS). The 3D model from Comsol Multiphysics was used for modeling and the FEM method was utilized for simulations. The findings demonstrate that the flashover voltage of the non-uniformly contaminated surface is primarily affected by the pollution layer length. Simulation results show that the intensity of the electric field rises with the increasing in length of pollution layer and its position. It was noted that the experimental tests in laboratory for non-uniform contamination are in strong alignment with simulation studies. The results of this analysis should expand our understanding about the performance of outdoor insulators under specific contaminated conditions. The knowledge gathered can be used to enhance the configuration of insulators used in contaminated regions and it is believed that the current study has resulted methodology to estimate reliably and realistically the pollution performance of cylindrical porcelain insulators.
