Opis:
Archaeological and geophysical prospection of the site of Khirbat as-Sar (Sara) in Jordan, carried out by a team from the Polish Centre of the Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), University of Warsaw, has resulted in a comprehensive plan mapping all visible architectural remains. A Roman-period sacred compound appears to be a central feature of this site. Pottery collected from the surface has given a time range for the settlement from the late Iron Age through the Mamluk period. The electrical resistivity method using a probe array that allowed ground penetration to a maximum depth of approximately 1.50 m revealed meaningful information on the spatial organization of the site. Numerous high-resistance anomalies were interpreted as a reflection of building remains.

Opis:
Combined geoelectric research was performed in the Starunia area, where the specimens of woolly rhinoceros were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. The work included: DC resistivity soundings, electromagnetic terrain conductivity measurements, resistivity imaging and penetrometer-based resistivity profiling. The main purpose of the survey was to give geoelectric characterization of near-to-surface sediments and estimate their variability (extent, thickness and electric resistivity). Generally, resistivity of geological strata is low and decreases with depth but its spatial distribution is locally complex. This complexity reflects joint effects caused by the presence of salty underground water outflows from the salt-bearing Miocene Vorotyshcha beds into the Quaternary sediments, distinct transformations of the geological medium by former ozokerite and oil exploitation and current activity of the natural geological processes in the area.

Opis:
The use of electromagnetic conductivity and electrical resistivity geophysical techniques has been employed in this study to investigate the occurrence, thickness, and spatial distribution of bitumen deposit around Makun-Omi in the Ijebu Waterside area of southwestern Nigeria. Subsurface apparent conductivity distribution data obtained using Geonic 34-3 equipment along fifteen traverses which sounded from different depths of 7.5, 15, 30 and 60 m at inter-coil separation of 10, 20 and 40 m in vertical and horizontal coupling modes and ground resistivity distribution measurements, obtained using Geopulse Tiger Allied resistivity meter at fourteen Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) stations, were processed and employed to characterize the subsurface in terms of tar sands distribution. The conductivity and resistivity distribution in the form of a 3D earth model, iso-depth maps, 2D sections generated from the processed conductivity and resistivity data indicate relatively low conductivity <20 mS/m and high resistivity >1300 Ωm values around tar/bitumen impregnated sands which mostly occurred in the southern part of the study area. Clearly defined conductivity and resistivity anomalies which delineate the lateral and vertical occurrence of tar impregnated sands underscore the efficacy of integrating electromagnetic and electrical resistivity geophysical techniques to identify occurrence of economic deposits of tar sands in parts of southwestern Nigeria.

Opis:
Geoelectric research aiming to assess heterogeneity of geological environment was carried out in the Starunia area, where the unique specimens of woolly rhinoceros were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. The DC azimuthal pole-dipole resistivity soundings and penetrometer-based resistivity profiling with simultaneous penetration-velocity measurements were used to study variability of environment in the vicinity of geological boreholes. No evident correlation was found between lithology of drilled sediments and geophysical data. Nevertheless, remarkable horizontal and vertical variability of geophysical parameters were observed. The largest horizontal changes may reflect an existence of some sharp boundaries in study area. The measured physical properties of geological strata: electric resistivity and compactness (estimated from penetration velocity) change also with the depth but correlation with geological structure can be found in limited cases only. Registered variability may have originated from several reasons: complex geological arrangement of shallow layers, salty underground water and bitumen presence in voids and pores, influence of neotectonic activity, and/or from transformations of near surface environment caused by past mining activity.

Opis:
Interdisciplinary geophysical, geochemical and botanical studies were performed to recognize the problem of salinity of Quaternary sediments in the place, where woolly rhinoceroses were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. Geoelectric methods (high resolution geoelectric research with electromagnetic conductivity meter) enabled construction of maps of the distribution of conductivity of near-surface sediments. Variation of conductivity with depth was recognized with penetrometer-based geoelectric measurements. Measured conductivity mainly depends on the level of mineralization (salinity) of underground water filling the pores and voids of poorly consolidated Quaternary sediments and partly underlying Miocene strata. Several samples were taken from geological boreholes. The analysis of these cores enabled estimation of salt (chloride ion) content in the solid phase of sediments. This content varies from place to place and with depth in an unpredictable way. The highest values reached 8.5 wt%. Generally, on the basis of a qualitative comparison, the salinity data gained from sampled cores correlate with distribution of apparent conductivity obtained with geoelectric methods. Nevertheless, in some places there is a discrepancy between geophysical and geochemical data, especially for penetrometer versus borehole data. It may be partly explained by an unavoidable difference in location of the geological borehole and penetrometer site (technically this cannot be the same place). During botanical field studies a group of vascular plants growing on saline soils (halophytes) was found. Halophytes indicate a higher salt concentration in the soil. Their aggregations are extremely rare in the Carpathian region. The pattern of halophytes distribution reflected the presence of saline water sources, and their flows and soils affected by them. Generally, the distribution of halophytes showed a good correlation with the distribution of high-conductivity anomalies determined with the surface geoelectric survey.

Opis:
Sinkhole (doline) collapse is one of the major natural hazards threatening people and property in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, especially if the bedrock structure is epi-karstic, covered by encrusted material. Many dolines-avens collapses have been recorded in urban and rural areas in Northeast Algeria. Our study identifies localized deformation that may be caused by a sinkhole activity based on the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) imaging in Setifian high plains. For this task, we conducted 2-D Wenner and Wenner-Schlumberger transects profiles. The geological and hydrogeological study helped to calibrate the resistivity model, and in this regard, expound on the proneness of the limestone layer to collapse. The obtained model highlights the heterogeneity of the subsurface. The inverted transects allowed the investigation of 20 m depth with Wenner array and 52 m with Wenner-Schlumberger. The Wenner inverted models imaged the chimney and different karst networks until 20 m depth; even as the Wenner-Schlumberger models imaged a new karstic cavity in the limestone layer. ERT imaging has once again proven its effectiveness in mapping sinkholes based on its ability to detect resistivity. Our research can certainly benefit karst collapse monitoring in other areas of the high plain region.

Obok osuwisk i innych skutków powierzchniowych ruchów masowych, zinwentaryzowanych w postaci kart dokumentacyjnych, zaobserwowano i odnotowano do udokumentowania liczne obiekty o mniejszych rozmiarach lub o mniejszej skali zagrożenia. Dla wybranych osuwisk, stwarzających istotne zagrożenie dla otoczenia, wykonano dokładne pomiary geodezyjne, badania geoelektryczne metodą tomografii opornościowej i płytkie wiercenia geologiczne. Celem tych prac było przygotowanie wstępnych danych do opracowania cyfrowych modeli osuwisk i ich wstępne rozpoznanie, poprzedzające ewentualne rutynowe monitorowanie procesów osuwiskowych. Biorąc pod uwagę zespoły osuwisk o podobnej genezie i podobnych uwarunkowaniach geomorfologicznych i geologicznych wyodrębniono następujące strefy objęte względnie intensywnymi procesami osuwiskowymi, tj. wybrzeże Bałtyku z aktywnymi procesami osuwiskowymi wywołanymi abrazją morską i obszar pojezierzy północnej Polski z licznymi wzgórzami morenowymi.

Opis:
The depletion of Zn-Pb ores in developed mining areas and the increase in metal prices have resulted in the need to search for new deposits which have not been exploited yet. A project of drilling new exploratory boreholes should be preceded by an interpretation of archival geological data. To obtain the most valuable information on the geological structure leading to its plausible interpretation, it seems to be purposeful and advisable to apply some geophysical methods that are reasonably cheap in comparison with others. The method of electrical resistivity tomography, which in this research uses two of many measurement protocols such as Schlumberger array and dipole-dipole array, is particularly useful. Computer interpretation of geophysical results allows a high resolution 2D and 3D geoelectrical model of rock mass to be created. The study was carried out using the multi-electrode Lund Imaging System manufactured by ABEM, Sweden. In order to evaluate the practical application of this method, Zawiercie Zn-Pb ore deposits were chosen as the area used in previous scientific research. Taking into account mineralization in its economic aspect, the deposits occur at relatively shallow depths of 50-120 m. In the investigated region, the Triassic carbonate formation overlays the Devonian rocks. The Keuper low-resistance clay, occurring on the surface, provides a very good electrical contact between an electrode and the soil. This is why there are favourable measurement conditions in this area. The boundaries between the Keuper, Devonian and Triassic formations are clearly noticeable in the resistivity cross-sections obtained. On the basis of the ERT results, it is possible to locate faulting zones as well as karst systems. One of the profiles clearly shows the occurrence of a low-resistance anomaly correlated with Zn-Pb mineralization, which was confirmed by borehole surveys. However, this early stage of the research with the use of the ERT method cannot unequivocally identify the ore body, particularly as it was conditioned by the limited depth of prospecting.
