Whereas women are sure of their biological maternity, men can never be fully certain of paternity and instead need to rely on indirect cues to assess whether they are likely to be father of their putative children. According to the psychological literature, men commonly use the information on the resemblance of offspring to self as an indicator of genetic relatedness. It seems, however, that in the absence of such a resemblance, similarity between a mother and a child might be important, because a man has additional reason to doubt his own biological paternity when the child is dissimilar to his partner. This assumption has been verified in two empirical studies.

What is discussed in the present paper is the assumption concerning a human narrowed sense of perception of external world and, resulting from this, a basically approximate nature of concepts that are to portray it. Apart from the perceptual vagueness, other types of vagueness are also discussed, involving both the nature of things, indeterminacy of linguistic expressions and psycho-sociological conditioning of discourse actions in one language and in translational contexts. The second part of the paper discusses the concept of conceptual and linguistic resemblance (similarity, equivalence) and discourse approximating strategies and proposes a Resemblance Matrix, presenting ways used to narrow the approximation gap between the interacting parties in monolingual and translational discourses.

Opis:
Applying the generalised extension principle within the area of Computing with Words typically leads to complex maximisation problems. If distributed quantities--such as, e.g., size distributions within human populations--are considered, density functions representing these distributions become involved. Very often the optimising density functions do not resemble those found in nature; for instance, an optimising density function could consist of two single Dirac pulses positioned near the opposite bounds of the interval limiting the possible values of the quantity considered. Therefore, in this article, density functions with certain shapes which enable us to overcome this lack of resemblance are considered. Furthermore, some considerations on solving the resulting maximisation problems are reported.

This paper is a polemic with Paweł Rojek’s criticism of Platonism as one of the positions concerning universals. The problem of universals is taken to be about the basis of resemblance between things. Rojek maintains that Platonism is a hidden form of nominalism. Section 1 presents my understanding of the key terms concerning the controversy. Section 2 shows that Rojek’s argument begs the question: he simply presupposes that only a moderate realist has a correct concept of universal. In section 3, I argue that the Platonist argument for the transcendence of universals is valid, and I criticize Rojek’s responses to the separation argument against moderate realism. Finally, section 4 demonstrates that the transcendence of universals is compatible with their generality.

The paper discusses the resemblance between Shakespeare’s play Macbeth and its cinematic adaptation directed by Justin Kurzel (2015) with respect to the image of Scotland in the geographical and historical sense. To this end, tools derived from translation studies are employed, such as the notion of intersemiotic translation, interpretive resemblance and interpretants. It is argued that alterations introduced in the adaptation are motivated by psychological reality and coherence of the plot, making the representation of medieval Scotland believable. In this respect, Kurzel’s production differs from many other cinematic versions of Macbeth, exploiting mostly the universality of the crime and madness motifs.

The article is an attempt to outline the cognitively understood web of school genres used for self-presentation. The author is trying to answer the question of which genre takes the place of the prototype model centre and what relations occur between the genres within the web. The starting point for the literary genetics traversing in the linguistic-didactic perspective was the theory of self- -presentation as well as both school and extracurricular texts that pursue specified genre patterns. Po II Soborze Watykańskim pojawiają się w nauczaniu papieskim oraz w teologii postulaty kształtowania Kościoła na wzór Chrystusa. Postulat ten jawi się jako oczywisty, ale nie oznacza to, że jest łatwy do opisu teologicznego i do praktycznej realizacji. Z tej racji zagadnienie zasługuje na szerszą uwagę. W artykule zostaje podjęty aspekt chrzcielny zagadnienia, który wyznacza perspektywę jego ujmowania w odniesieniu do innych zagadnień eklezjologicznych. Chrzest wskazuje przede wszystkim na to, że Kościół opiera się w swoim istnieniu i w swojej misji na darze Chrystusa, na który potem w ścisłym związku z tym darem udziela odpowiedzi. Z odpowiedzi dawanej w takim duchu rodzi się upodobnienie Kościoła do Chrystusa.
After Second Vatican Council the pontifical teaching and theology mention the need for building of the Church on the Christ model. Although this postulate seems to be evident, it is quite challenging in terms of theological description and practical realisation. For this reason the problem is worthy of attention. This item discusses the baptismal aspect of the problem, which defines the perspective of the problem in reference to other ecclesiological issues. Baptism accentuates mostly the fact that the Church is based in its existence and mission on the gift of Christ. The Church answers to this gift and remains in strict relation with it. Thus, from the answer given in such a spirit stems the resemblance between the Church and Christ.

Autor analizuje twórczość prozatorską współczesnych – z początku obecnego wieku – publicystów polskich (Andrzeja Horubały, Cezarego Michalskiego, Grzegorza Miecugowa, Bronisława Wildsteina i Rafała Ziemkiewicza), pytając, o ile jest ona przedłużeniem ich przekonań, kompleksów czy tylko technik publicystycznych. Odwołuje się do Ansgara Nünninga, analizującego współcześnie zadania literaturoznawstwa wobec zjawiska generowania światopoglądów przez prozatorskie gatunki literackie i odwrotnie – oddziaływania literackich „sposobów tworzenia świata” (ways of worldmaking) na rzeczywistość pozaliteracką. Prowadzi go to do podobnych, wcześniejszych intuicji badawczych Romana Ingardena (intencjonalność literatury) czy Paula Ricoeure’a (koła mimesis) i w konsekwencji do zauważalnego właśnie dzisiaj znoszenia różnic między literaturą a publicystyką. Konstatuje – znów za Nünningiem – „reintegracyjny dyskurs” tak rozumianej literatury i jej kontekstu kulturowego, pozostawiając ocenę tego zjawiska przyszłym badaczom.
The author analyses prose works of contemporary – from the beginning of this century – Polish columnists (Andrzej Horubała, Cezary Michalski, Grzegorz Miecugow, Bronisław Wildstein, and Rafał Ziemkiewicz). He wonders whether their works are reflecting the authors’ beliefs, inhibitions, or only their journalistic techniques. The author refers to the example of Ansgar Nünning, who analyses the tasks of literary studies, as confronted with the phenomenon of shaping world views by prose literary genres, and the other way round – the influence that literary “ways of world making” has on non-literary reality. This leads him to earlier research intuitive faculties of Roman Ingarden (intuitiveness of literature), or Paulo Ricoeur (“circle of mimesis”) and consequently to the differences between literature and journalism, which are becoming more and more visible nowadays. The author notes, again referring to Nünning, “reintegration discourse” of this kind of literature and its cultural context, leaving the evaluation of this phenomenon to the future researchers.

We present a framework of L-fuzzy modifiers for L being a complete lattice. They are used to model linguistic hedges that act on linguistic terms represented by L-fuzzy sets. In the modelling process the context is taken into account by means of L-fuzzy relations, endowing the L-fuzzy modifiers with a clear inherent semantics. To our knowledge, these L-fuzzy modifiers are the first ones proposed that are suitable to perform this representation task for a lattice L different from the unit interval. In the latter case they undoubtedly outperform the traditional representations, such as powering and shifting hedges, from the semantical point of view.

Jeden z zarzutów wobec nominalizmu tropowego głosi, że tropy, wbrew deklaracjom ich zwolenników, muszą być złożone, co otwiera drogę do regresu, który da się zatrzymać, tylko przyjmując jakieś powszechniki. Złożoność tropów ma wynikać z tego, że relacja podobieństwa i relacja różnicy numerycznej, które zachodzą między doskonale podobnymi tropami, muszą mieć osobne fundamenty, stanowiące składniki tropów. Te fundamenty znów stoją w relacjach podobieństwa i różnicy, co generuje regres. W niniejszym artykule przyglądam się temu problemowi i próbuję odpierać argumentację przeciwników nominalizmu tropowego. Za punkt odniesienia czynię artykuł Pawła Rojka „Regresy podobieństwa. Podwójny relacyjny argument przeciw nominalizmowi tropowemu”, który w oryginalny sposób łączy ze sobą rożne zarzuty przeciw nominalizmowi tropowemu. Struktura mojego tekstu jest następująca: najpierw krótko charakteryzuję nominalizm tropowy i wskazuję, co mnie łączy z tym stanowiskiem (nie mogę bez zastrzeżeń określić siebie jako zwolennika nominalizmu tropowego). Następnie podaję charakterystykę relacji, w szczególności relacji podobieństwa, a potem przedstawiam argument Pawła Rojka. W kolejnym paragrafie staram się pokazać, że argument za złożonością tropów zakłada zasadę identyczności nieodróżnialnych, którą nominalista tropowy odrzuca. W przedostatniej sekcji wskazuję, że jednostkowość nie jest składnikiem tropu, lecz sposobem, w jaki trop konstytuuje rzeczywistość.
One of the objections against trope nominalism is that tropes, contrary to the declarations of the their proponents, must be complex, which opens the road to a regress that can only be stopped by accepting some universals. The complexity of tropes is supposed to arise from the fact that the relation of resemblance and the relation of numerical difference, which occur between perfectly resembling tropes, must have separate foundations which are components of tropes themselves. These foundations again stand in resemblance and difference relations, thus they are also complex, and so on. In this article, I discuss this problem and try to refute the arguments of the opponents of trope nominalism. As a point of reference I take Paweł Rojek’s paper „Regresy podobieństwa. Podwójny relacyjny argument przeciw nominalizmowi tropowemu” [Resemblance regresses. A double argument against trope nominalism], which in an original way links together the various objections against trope nominalism. The structure of my article is as follows: first I briefly characterize trope nominalism and indicate what I have in common with this position. Then I characterize relations, in particular the resemblance relation, and then I present Rojek’s argument. Then I try to show that the argument for the complexity of tropes presupposes the principle of the identity of indiscernibles, which is rejected by nominalists. In the penultimate section, I point out that particularity is not a component of a trope, but a way in which a trope constitutes reality.

The article is an attempt to pinpoint the areas of Ludwig Wittgenstein aesthetic thought, in which he is crossing the borders principally imposed upon the method and the language of his philosophy. I am directing my attention to metaphysical and mystical motifs of his reflection devoted to aesthetics, the essence of art and the essence of reality. I wish to discuss this issue based on the texts of Arthur C. Danto containing analysis of chosen notions of Wittgenstein’s aesthetic investigations. Niniejszy artykuł skupiony jest wokół roli zagadnienia gier słów wynikających ze zjawiska homofonii w utworach grupy Oulipo. Badanie oparte jest na przykładzie korpusu, którego źródłem są krótkie formy literackie zebrane w tomie Anthologie de l’OuLiPo (2009) przez M. Bénabou i P. Fournela. Poprzez odwołanie do klasyfikacji figur słów zaproponowanej przez J.-J. Robrieux (2000) i teorii gier słów P. Guiraud (1976), dokonana została analiza konkretnych realizacji oulipijskich „przymusów” (tj. ograniczeń językowych), opartych na zjawisku homofonii. W ramach badania podjęte zostało zagadnienie podwójnej lektury (syntetycznej i analitycznej) oulipijskich tekstów, a także poruszona została kwestia określenia czynników umożliwiających odczytanie gier proponowanych odbiorcy przez autora. Analiza korpusu pozwala na zilustrowanie funkcji gier słów opartych na homofonii i na określenie konsekwencji ich stosowania dla poszukiwania potencjału języka. Homofoniczne gry słów okazują się skutecznym narzędziem stylistycznym, ale także ważną przesłanką do rozważań nad linearną naturą języka, konwencjonalnością jego elementów i relacji między nimi.
This article seeks to explore the role of homophonic puns in the works of the Oulipo group. The study is based on the example of a corpus drawn from the Oulipian microtexts collected in Anthologie de l’OuLiPo (2009) by M. Bénabou and P. Fournel. With reference to the classification of figures of words proposed by J.-J.Robrieux (2000) and the theory of word plays by P. Guiraud (1976), an analysis of specific realisations of Oulipian linguistic ‘constraints’ founded on the phenomenon of homophony was undertaken. The analysis explores the question of the double reading, synthetic and analytical, of Oulipian texts, and discusses the determination of factors that facilitate the interpretation of the puns proposed to the reader by the author (such as context, spelling, syllable distribution, typography). The study of the corpus aims to illustrate the function of homophone-based word plays and their application in the exploration of language’s potential. Homophonic wordplay is an effective stylistic device, but also an important premise for reflection on the linear nature of language, the conventionality of its components and the relations between them.

Opis:
This paper is an attempt to describe the beginnings and groundwork of the Christian mystique. The issues discussed in the paper are as follows:– different ways of understanding Christian mysticism; – history of salvation and the way it is the basis of the mysticism. The act of creation in which each human being receives Lord’s image and resemblance, as well as the vocation for happiness. This harmony was destroyed by sin. Therefore Lord in His love begins the process of renewing man being, so as he may become new creature in Jesus Christ. God-man invites people to relationship with Him and with the other people. Spiritual relationship shows the way to the Lord and encourages to follow the Lord who works and rests and helps to regain true Lord picture;– example of Christian mysticism and cooperation in the process of renewing human being.
Autorka niniejszego artykułu podejmuje próbę opisania korzeni oraz fundamentu mistyki chrześcijańskiej, która zasadza się na obrazie i podobieństwie do Boga otrzymywanym przez każdego człowieka w akcie stwórczym. W swoich rozważaniach na temat korzeni mistyki chrześcijańskiej autorka porusza wiele tematów z tym związanych. Przedstawia różne sposoby pojmowania mistyki. Mówiąc o akcie stworzenia człowieka, zwraca szczególną uwagę na to, że każdy człowiek jest stworzony na obraz i podobieństwo Boga, i to Boga szczęśliwego. Tę harmonię szczęścia niszczy grzech. Bóg w swojej miłości rozpoczyna proces odnowienia człowieka, tak by stał się on nowym stworzeniem na wzór doskonałego obrazu w Jezusie Chrystusie. Bóg-Człowiek zaprasza wszystkich do wyjątkowej relacji ze sobą oraz bliźnimi. Duchowa relacja pokazuje człowiekowi drogę w głąb siebie, zachęca do prawdziwego życia duchowego oraz naśladowania Boga, który działa i „odpoczywa”. Pomaga w odnawianiu się i odzyskiwaniu prawdziwego obrazu Bożego w sobie. Najlepszym przykładem współpracy ze Stwórcą w tym procesie jest osoba św. Pawła Apostoła narodów.
