Opis:
The cycle of gonad development and related changes in the length structure and spatial-temporal distribution of ninespine sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius L.) in Puck Bay were studied. Observations were carried out in the shallow shore zones, as well as in the deeper epipelagic zone of the Bay. Ninespine sticklebacks reproduce in the brackish environment of Puck Bay, breeding in its warmer, inshore zones. Reproduction takes place in the spring and summer months, from April to July. One female spawns several clutches of eggs during one breeding season. The average length of ninespine sticklebacks in Puck Bay was about 40 mm, and the sex ratio in the population was close to 1:1. However, both length structure and sex ratio were subject to local and periodic variations, resulting from possible breeding-related territorial divisions. Higher gonadosomatic indices in females in early spring represented the transition of fish to the advanced vitelligenous phase. The lowest GSI of males during the breeding season indicated the termination of spermatogenesis. The completion of spawning in August started a new process of gonad restoration to prepare the fish for the next breeding season.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to evaluate an efficacy of sows vaccination protocols in the herd with serious problems affecting efficacy of reproduction. The study was performed in a large pig herd with about 1200 sows. Before vaccination against PCV2, farrowing rate in this farm was about 65%. Sows, boar and replacement gilts were immunized using Circovac vaccine (Merial, France) according to producer’s recommendations. Parameters of production were analyzed since 2007 until 2010 in selected batches of sows inseminated at the same weeks of the year (17th, 18th, 19th and 20th) to eliminate seasonal variability. In total, 940 sows were subjected to the study. No significant changes in management during these years were introduced. The applied protocol of sow herd long-term vaccination proved to be very efficient. All measured production parameters: reproduction rate, number of piglets born alive, birth weight of piglets and number of piglets weaned per a litter improved after implementation of immunization program. Moreover, further improvement was observed with vaccination in the following reproduction cycles. The most spectacular effect of vaccination regarded average farrowing rate that increased from 64.76% in control group to 86.93% after basic vaccination. Two years after implementation of vaccination program this parameter reached 93.6%. Number of piglets weaned per sow per a litter improved from 10.31 to 11.74 after one year of vaccination and remained relatively stable through the following year. Simultaneously, the percentage of newborn piglets with birth weight < 1 kg decreased significantly (p < 0.05). To summarize, vaccination against PCV2 influenced positively the insemination rate, number of piglets born alive and weaned per litter as well as birth body weight and percentage of piglets weighing < 1 kg.

Opis:
The annual reproductive cycle in two wild populations of three-spined stickleback was studied. Sticklebacks from the Dead Vistula River (Martwa Wisła) (brackish water) and the Oliva Stream (Potok Oliwski) (freshwater) were exposed to annual environmental changes in their natural habitats. Ovaries and livers (females), and testes and kidneys (males) were collected during 1–2 years. The gonadosomatic IG, hepatosomatic IH, nephrosomatic IN indices, kidney epithelium height (KEH) and size of oocytes were calculated. The number of mature oocytes and percentage of ovulating females were determined during the spawning season. Histological changes in the ovaries and testes were described throughout a year. Annual reproductive cycles were similar in both populations of sticklebacks. This is the first histological and morphological study carried out throughout a year, simultaneously in two wild populations of three-spined sticklebacks inhabiting different environments. An improved scale of gonadal development in conjunction with the determined indices and fecundity give a comprehensive description of the reproductive cycle. These newobserv ations, in combination with previously reported features, provide a universal scale that can be successfully used to distinguish all phases of gametogenesis in sticklebacks in different habitats.

Opis:
Effect of dietary arginine supplementation on body weight changes and productivity of sows. The objective of this study was to determine whether provision of additional arginine to pregnant and lactating sows could influence body weight changes in females during reproductive cycle as well as reproductive and rearing performance of the piglets. The study included 36 F1 crossbred sows (Polish Landrace ´Polish Large White), including 12 primiparous and 24 multiparous sows, which after insemination were randomly allocated to experimental group E (6 primiparous – P and 12 multiparous – M) and control group C (6 P and 12 M). Sows from both groups received complete diets, which were fed to meet requirements. Sows from group E were supplemented with amino acid (L-arginine 98%) at 0.3 kg/ton for pregnant sows (from 4 weeks after insemination) and at 0.5 kg/ton for lactating sows. C sows were not supplemented. Feeding group (C, E) had a significant effect on sow body weight at weaning (P ≤0.01), while lactation (P, M) had a significant effect on sow body weight at mating and weaning, and also on body weight change during the weaning-to-mating period (P ≤0.01). The number of piglets born to primiparous sows from group E vs C was higher by 1.3 piglets (11.11%) (P >0.05). 28-day-old weaned piglets, reared by primiparous sows, were significantly heavier than the progeny of multiparous sows (P ≤0.01), by 0.76 kg/animal (10.08%) in group C and by 0.97 kg/animal (12.63%) in group E. Piglets from group E vs C were heavier at weaning by 0.35 kg (4.22%) when born to primiparous sows, and by 0.14 kg (1.86%) when born to multiparous sows. No group ´lactation interaction has been shown for any of the parameters studied. It seems appropriate to supplement pregnant and nursing primiparous sows with dietary arginine.
(10.08%), a w grupie E o 0.97 kg/szt. (12.63%).

Opis:
Bollworms comprise the most harmful and economically relevant species of lepidopteran. Helicoverpa gelotopoeon (D.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is native to America and affects many crops. Tobacco is an industrial crop in which methods of pest control rely mainly on the application of insecticides. To develop new eco-friendly strategies against insect pests it is very important to overcome the side effects of insecticides. The utilization of fungal entomopathogens as endophytes is a new perspective that may accomplish good results. The present study aimed to evaluate the ability of endophytic Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. to affect H. gelotopoeon life parameters and feeding behavior on tobacco plants. Beauveria bassiana LPSC 1215 as an endophyte did not reduce the amount of vegetal material consumed by H. gelotopoeon larvae but affected the life cycle period of the plague, particularly the larval and adult stages. Also, egg fertility was affected since adults laid eggs that were not able to hatch. The results of this investigation provide new information on endophytic entomopathogen potential to be incorporated in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

The contractile effects of PGF₂α (3 × 10⁻⁶ to 10⁻⁴ M) and PGE₂ (10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁵ M) were examined on isolated branches of ovarian artery (OA) and extramyometrial branches of uterine artery (UA) collected from pigs in the luteal (day 10-12) and follicular phase (day 17-20) of the estrous cycle, and during early pregnancy (day 10-12). Strong contraction was demonstrated in both arteries during all investigated periods in response to PGF2α, which was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than to PGE₂, being negligible in the follicular phase. In UA, the effective dose of PGF₂α (ED50) amounted 7.9 × 10⁻⁶ M and 6.3 × 10⁻⁶ M in the luteal and follicular phase, and 5.0 × 10⁻⁶ M in early pregnancy. ED50 for PGE₂ reached 5.0 × 10⁻⁷ M in the luteal phase, and 4.1 × 10⁻⁷ M in early pregnancy. For both prostaglandins, the contraction was much stronger (P < 0.01) in OA than in UA branches. In OA, the ED50 for PGF₂α was 1.2 × 10⁻⁵ M in the luteal phase and was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in the follicular phase (3.1 × 10⁻⁶ M) and early pregnancy (2.7 × 10⁻⁶ M). ED50 for PGE2 amounted 7.3 × 10⁻⁷ M in the luteal phase and 1.7 × 10⁻⁷ M in early pregnancy. Studies showed the influence of the estrous cycle and early pregnancy on OA branches sensitivity to the contractile effect of PGF₂α and the lack of this effect on UA branches, and the influence of the estrous cycle on UA and OA branch contraction in response to PGE2.
