In the present article I outline the situation of children who belong to an indigenous community of Ba’Aka Pygmies, a group inhabiting the Sangha-Mbaéré region of rainforest in the Central African Republic. These children are inscribed in the categories of “invisible” and “unheard” children. They are also deprived of the right to be properly researched. This is due to a number of external and internal factors which shape the contemporary reality of the formerly colonised country. Despite the fact that the Central African Republic broke free from colonial oppression, since 1960s it has been experiencing internal colonisation and civilising missions by the countries of the Global North so as to be “fruitfully” written in the narrative of national development. Thus, referring to key categories, I discuss postcolonial representations: images and narratives perceived through the perspective of a female researcher who, since 2002, has conducted field research among excluded and marginalised children and young people in fragile (vulnerable) contexts in Central Africa.

The proposal aims to highlight the semiotic elements of the discourse that refer to the symbolic ones of representations, and that transform the therapy in an exercise of professional dominion aimed to modify the perception of the self of the female patient through the subversion of specific emotional script. The mapping of the emotional scripts of shame and modesty, in their performative evolution, will be useful to demonstrate how and through what relational strategies the medicalization performs a gender violence which leads to exclude and self-stigmatise the sick woman, considered a “half woman”. The reflection that has its incipit in the ascertainment that the female body has been and keeps being a means of “male dominion” and object of “symbolic violence” as well as physical, and favors unexpected articulations related to a female body affected by breast or uterus cancer with often devastating effects on the woman’s self-perception. This proposal provides a reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 Italian and stranger women. The research aims at discussing the role of medical therapy as a social practice of male domination that imposes a traditional representation in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus that creates, breast that feeds). The focus of research is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib.

Opis:
The article addresses a source rarely used by social researchers, namely the inscriptions on wayside crosses in rural settings. Crosses erected “in memory of” preserve social memory and forestall the natural process of oblivion. These inscriptions are the products of social reflection, and express collective representations and the collective opinion of the community. One can deduce the values most important to the community, and those most endangered, from the wording imprinted on the crosses. The preserved inscriptions are all the more valuable as a state of collective consciousness in rural communities has yet to be constructed on the basis of individual testimonies in the form of letters or diaries. The inscriptions on crosses in an area of the Lublin voivodeship, enriched with information gathered regarding the local context, constitute the article’s empirical basis.

Artykuł, poświęcony rosnącej popularności picture-booków i kłopotom z ich definicją, koncentruje się na twórczości Iwony Chmielewskiej, autorki związanej z tematyką Zagłady. Szczegółowo omówione zostają jej dwie książki, Pamiętnik Blumki (2011) i Dopóki niebo nie płacze (2016), reprezentujące różne odmiany tego gatunku, będące eksperymentami w poszukiwaniu nowych form książki jako materialnego i wizualnego obiektu, narzucającego nielinearny porządek odbioru i problematyzującego relacje między słowem a obrazem. Podjęte zostają również kwestie etyczne w literaturze o Holokauście, wyrażające się często w wyborze między realistycznym obrazowaniem, metaforycznym skrótem a milczeniem.
The author discusses the growing popularity of picture-books and gives a critical overview of the problems of the definition of the genre. He concentrates on the two recent works of Iwona Chmielewska which address the issues of the Holocaust, representing different approaches to the genre, experimenting with the book as a material and visual object, requiring non-linear reception and problematizing the word-image relation. The article also reflects on ethical issues of the Holocaust literature, which can be identified in the choice between realistic representation, metaphorical codensation and silence.

A notion of *-wildness was also introduced there for an algebra (a category) if the algebra majorizes the *-algebra C* (F2)- In this paper, we discuss some methods for proving that an algebra is *-wild and obtain criteria for certain "standard" *-categories (ensembles with an orthogonality condition) to be *-wild.

In this paper, we study operator theory on the *-algebra Mp, consisting of all measurable functions on the finite Adele ring Aq, in extended free-probabilistic sense. Even though our *-algebra Mp is commutative, our Adelic-analytic data and properties on Mv are understood as certain free-probabilistic results under enlarged sense of (noncommutative) free probability theory (well-covering commutative cases). From our free-probabilistic model on Aq, we construct the suitable Hilbert-space representation, and study a C*-algebra M-p generated by M-p under representation. In particular, we focus on operator-theoretic properties of certain generating operators on Mp.

During the first three years of Vespasian’s reign, coins which depicted Nilus bust were minted in Alexandria. Some scholars relate these representations to the reported by Cassius Dio (LXVI 8, 1) sudden exceptional Nile flooding which took place after the emperor’s arrival in Alexandria. However, the dates of both events are disputable. It seems that Nilus bust on the coins is rather an expression of Roman emperors’ complying with requirements of the tradition which identified the monarch with the renewed Nile.

The article reviews the share that Vespasian had in the decoration of the Temple of Osiris Nesmeti on Elephantine. It is considered in the context of a report of Cassius Dio (LXVI 8, 1) who associated that ruler’s entry into Alexandria with an exceptional rise of flooding waters and also in view of the connection of that report with the Egyptian royal ideology which identified the king with the Nile and its flooding. The Vespasian’s decoration of the Temple of Osiris Nesmeti is analyzed in the light of representations of Nilus on the monumental staircase leading to the temple and of the stele of Florence (no. 4021).

This article provides the results of classroom research involving university students training to be secondary school teachers of geography and history. The research is based on the analysis of a word association test on Europe and the European Union. The results constitute an approach to the geographical and historical representations these students have of their own European continent. This is a fundamental question considering that this collective group is training to teach the contents and values of European geography in secondary school education. From here on, our intention is no other than to carry out an exercise of synthesis and overall reflection on the test results and introduce issues which could generate some debate in the educational community.

Some applications of Theorem 5.1 to the theory of one-parameter semigroups of operators are discussed. In particular a version of the Hille-Yosida generation theorem is deduced for $C_0$ semigroups $(S_t)_{t ∈ \overline{ℝ^{+}}}$ such that $sup_{t ∈ \overline{ℝ^{+}}} (ϰ(t))^{-1}∥ S_t∥ < ∞$.

Human enhancement affects all members of society and is thus closely linked to issues of social justice: up to now, the promises and perils of enhancement are usually only known to, and thus used, by few members of society. This can lead to individual competitive advantages that create or widen social gaps. Broad public information is, therefore, key to ensure that enhancement does not conflict with the principle of equality of opportunities. As possible means of public information, literature and films are able to counter such possible social injustice, which is why they may be allotted a central role in the ethical debates on human enhancement. Two aspects will be considered in this regard: 1) enhancement in art and 2) through art. 1) The extent to which artistic depictions and public information and perceptions of enhancement may be intertwined will be illustrated by two examples where both texts and their accompanying paratexts had a particular bearing on the public debate on enhancement: the film Gattaca of 1997 and the novel Never let me go (2005) by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro. 2) The second part of the paper is dedicated to the question of how far enhancing selected groups of society may contribute to a greater common good and which potentials art can offer in this regard. Three groups of persons will be taken into account: 1) clinical ethics committees, 2) physicians, and 3) patients.
